Basically if Lui retires as a Canuck before the end of his contract, the total amount of the cap advantage (the amount a player’s actual salary exceeds his cap hit in a given year) the Canucks gained over the years they've had him will have to be paid back in equal instalments for the remainder of the contract. If Lui gets traded and spends a few years with the new team but still retires before the end of his contract, then the team that traded for him also has to pay back the total cap advantage they gained over the time Lui was with them in equal instalments for the remainder of the contract.
