As hockey afficandos await with eager anticipation the biggest international hockey event since the 1987 Canada Cup, many spent their time watching non-NHL leagues carry on. On Thursday Feb 11 the Alaska Aces arrived in Victoria for a three game in 60 hours series with the home Victoria Salmon Kings. With numbers depleted by injury and AHL callups, the Salmon Kings dressed 9 forwards, and either 4 or 5 defenseman. Taylor Ellington's return from the Moose brought the defense back to 5 healthy bl
Victoria hockey fans got full value for their ticket dollars in last week's home series with the Utah Grizzlies. Three consectutive shootouts, stellar goaltending, two penalty "hat tricks", plus moments of joy tinged with some sadness along with a comic moment made for an interesting hockey fan experience. Once the ice had been cleaned after the final shootout, the Salmon Kings over the three games held a slim 12-11 edge along with a 106-100 shot advantage. Even the power plays were close, 4 of
After the split in Bakersfield and a vist to Universal Studios, the Victoria Salmon Kings prepared to finish their January trip to California with three games in Stockton. In the opener on Wed, Jan 27, despite holding a one shot advantage, and having outshot the Stockton Thunder in the first and the third, the result was not positive. Two Thunder goals in the first followed by four in the second led to a 7-3 Stockton win. For Victoria, the main item was another Wes Goldie hat trick, which now pu
Three players with experience with the China Sharks, Saint John Seadogs and the Lincoln Stars combined on a goal that has become an internet sensation. The dazzling skills have had fans buzzzing about what they saw. An alert camerman caught the goal on tape and somehow it was quickly forwarded to TSN who then made it as the TSN Sports Centre's Highlight of the Night. Left winger Scott Howes played Jr A with the OPJHL Wexford Raiders but was overlooked by the OHL. An oppurtunity to cross the pr
Win at home and split on the road is an old hockey adage. In a four game home sweep followed by a weekend split in Bakersfield, the Victoria Salmon Kings followed that script. Once the ice had been cleared, the Salmon Kings finished the weekend still in 3rd overall in the ECHL National Conference. They have scored the most goals (148) in the conference and are third lowest in goals against. With an ECHL low of 547 total team penalty minutes, Coach Morrison's crew remains the most disciplined squ
Last night (Jan 20), David Shantz, goalie for the Victoria Salmon Kings participated in his second ECHL AllStar game, this time as the starter for the National Conference. Born in Burlington, Ontario on May 5,1986, Shantz was with the nearby Hamilton Midget Reps in the 2001-02 season. He had impressed the scouts of the OHL Mississaugua Ice Dogs enough for them to select him 121st overall in that springs OHL Priority Draft. Before making the jump to major junior, he spent a year with the Thorold
In a week where the Victoria Salmon Kings gave their fans some memorable moments in four home games, one goal will be long cherished as it made it as TSN's Highlight of the Night. Another memorable goal was the drag move that Olivier Latendress employed to finish the home stand with a shootout wining goal. Victoria opened the week by welcoming a new defenseman, Andy Rodgers. A four home sweep would move the Salmon Kings into a points tie for 2nd place in the National Conference. The schedule bro
History was made last night. For the first time a goal scoring hilight from a game at SOFMC was shown on TSN. It was the 5th goal of a 5 goal first period outburst in a 6-3 Victoria Salmon Kings victory over the visiting Bakersfield Condors. Adam Taylor was the goal scorer with a tricky move that was preceided by some amazing puck control by Scott Howes and Dirk Southern. This play made TSN's Sports Centre Honour Roll + was the hilight of the night.
A split with Idaho, recognition from the ECHL, call ups to the AHL, and the addition of a new player were the main events this past week for the Victoria Salmon Kings. For a second time, David Shantz was named ECHL Goaltender of the week. Along with rookie d-man Taylor Ellington, Shantz has been selected to play in the upcoming ECHL All-Star Game.
In mid-week, Ellington was recalled to the AHL Manitoba Moose, then two days later, another d-man, Jimmy Sharrow was loaned to the Moose. Sharrow

Score 2-2, shot advantage to Utah 28-27, and both teams were collectively even on the plus/minus.
Both leading Conference goal scorers were shutout in regulation time, and for the second night in a row, Olivier Latendresse opened the scoring.

As many of us prepare to celebrate Christmas Day with our families or in our own way, may all have a day full of fun, magic, friendship, and music. And in the new year of 2010 may fortune find its way to see Stanley visit Vancouver, Calder sit at Portage and Maine, and Kelly come for a summers rest in Victoria. With the Salmon Kings post Christmas schedule starting up again on Sunday, December 27, there will be a Skate with the Salmon Kings players after the game.
For those who have not read or seen the video of Roch Carrier's wonderful story, "The Sweater", this is a perfect time of the year to do so. It reminds me of the request my brother and I made during the days of "the original six." Both of us requested Leafs shirts, but they were sold out, and under the tree my brother got a Montreal shirt while I received a Rangers shirt.

Just twenty seconds in, Adam Taylor's faceoff win led to a quick opening goal by Scott Howes. A Thunder response came via a defensive zone coverage breakdown that enabled Stockton captain #12 J.F.
