You are a smart cookie.  I know people have high hopes for Baer.  I think Granlund has more chance to be in the NHL two years from now than Baer.  That's me though.  I just do see much of a future for a 28 point top six winger, who contributes in no other way than points.  Then, he could bust out and become the next Marcus.

I noticed the last 1/4 -1/3 of the season that Baertschi started throwing hits a lot more. Quite impressed me at how tenacious he was starting to become.

I see it like this too. Everyone thinking that Biega would get claimed are failing to realize that the other 29 teams have prospects PTOs and returning players to sort through before they start looking at other teams' depth guys. I think he gets waived early and becomes the Comets captain again for next year, so that he can continue to mentor the young guys like Subban and Stetcher.

This wouldn't surprise me at all

No no you had him 3rd last. Lacks on your list twice now! Good job on the list (brings back some bad memories haha) but I'm sure now you've gotten the point across to some posters ;)! This signing shouldn't be taken lightly as it could be huge for the Canucks future.

Hahaha, I really didn't care though. In Vancouver we always have goalies.

Ya like..... Auld, Bachman, Burke, Brochu, Cloutier, Eriksson, Essensa, Fountian, Hirsch,  Hedberg, Irbe, Labarbera, Lack, Luongo, MacIntrye, Markstrom, Michaud, Miller, Moss, Noronen, Oulette, Potvin, Raycroft, Sabourin, Sanford, Scwhab, Skudra, Schneider, Snow, Whitmore, Weekes,

    All since Captain Kirk!

What the hell? Cloutier was an NHL goalie for years with excellent talent. Regardless of whether he played consistently under pressure, he does know what it takes. You don't need to be the best "skill" wise to be an excellent teacher, you just have to know what you are doing. The teaching aspect is another skill in itself. If a goalie has that retort to a coach then he's a sour brat (not saying Demko would). That's a low blow response to advice, rejecting it with a retort about how the coach failed 13 years ago.

The corner advice might seem obvious, but that's just the surface level of what it is. What he really is saying is you can't cheat like in college or junior as much, as guys have quicker and more accurate shots (corners). A goalie coach's job is to tell a goalie what they need to do to do better. Any goalie happy with their play is doomed to fail. Demko had an amazing season in college, but that means jack all in the AHL or NHL if a player can't transition their play between leagues. Besides, sometimes the best teachers are the ones who got close at the highest level but failed (often miserably), because they are the ones who know exactly where they went wrong. Winners sometimes are more blind to their flaws.

    I completely agree.

Cloutier could stand on his head!. He made some real beauty saves. His downfall was that he would crack under pressure. By no means was Cloutier an untalented Goalie! He just had problems with the mental pressure.

That being said he has had lots of time to evaluate what went wrong and most likely knows better than anyone what is needed to excel as a goalie.

Look at the job he did with Markstrom as proof. Markstrom was suffering from the same issue that plagued Cloutier. Cloutier knows how to coach Goalies!

    His pudding proves it!

It's from February after they traded for him.  They traded for his NHL rights but I believe he's still under contract with his KHL club that's why they can't sign him until July 1.

Ahhh Gotcha :) Cool. I think his agent said there wont be any issues with him signing with us too.

TSN’s Bob McKenzie reports that Vancouver intends on giving Larsen a NHL contract on Jul. 1 and having him on the NHL roster for the 2016-17 season.

Good deal! Maybe that's where I got this one way deal stuck in my head for Larsen. Is that just a recent article?

he played in Edmonton after Dallas so I doubt that's the case.

Did he? I thought he decided not to play in Edmonton. That's why he's coming back from the KHL. I don't think he ever played for Edmonton.

But it does look like he is currently with out a contract.

I don't think Larsen has signed yet...but when he does sign, JB'll probably sign him to a one-way deal.

I thought he is already signed to a one way deal ? I thought JB signed him just after trading for him ?

Larsen might turn out great but the jury is most definitely still out. He hasn't earned a spot yet.

I have watched a bit of Stecher and he is another great pick up by Benning. Rare right handed Dman who has above average hockey IQ. This makes up for his Deadline non moves.

Larsen has a one way contract so either he plays or is traded. Stecher can be called up with no issues.

Is there really? With Hutton and Tryamkin coming out of nowhere and basically stealing spots this year, Sbisa and Larsen being given spots and needing to protect Pedan there isn't any room for him on the Canucks. Benning has said again recently that they are probably going to need 11 defensemen in any given year so it would make zero sense to put a waiver ineligible player in the lineup next year. I put McCann and Virtanen in that same boat and our injuries this last season and during the Torts season, make it clear that we need that minor league depth over the course of an 82 game season.

A year of AHL hockey with some call up time due to injuries might be a real good thing for Stecher. Next year may or may not amount to much anyways. The year after should be on the upswing for sure tho :)

    People also have to remember, where the average size is 201 lbs > two things;

    - Most guys are smaller as rookies breaking in to the league. Then put on muscle as they go. Stecher will be no different. 5'11'' and 192 lbs BTW is very muscular already for a player who will be playing with 7 or 9% body fat. Not to mention having dynamic speed, explosive quickness. That comes because he is strong.

    - The 201lb average is also brought up by the Milan Lucic, Getzlaf & Byfuglien's of the league. In reality, taking the beasts out of the equation, 192 lbs for Stecher would be very similar to most guys actually running around.

I'd be more concerned about Ben Hutton playing at 182 lbs while 6'2''?

    Exactly ^^^

When you consider the differences in the style of play as well as the general assumption that people are bigger than they were back then, it's not as surprising. What I mean by that is while players are bigger, stronger, faster, the big players who can't skate/aren't skilled are being phased out. Speed is something making a bit of a comeback as the NHL moves away from the enforcer role and more to players who can play so that balances it out as some smaller players are able to make an impact even if they're fringe or replacement level.

There are a lot of factors though, like with the rookies comment above they're coming in with far better training at this point and likely have more muscle mass than their equivalent back then.

Good point about the speed skill being emphasized.

This just makes a better case for Stecher having good success at the NHL level.

Regardless of the training being better nowadays for these kids. You still cant out train genetics or growth patterns of the human being. So it is inevitable that the kid will still pick up some more strength and muscle weight. He will probably still grow another inch too :)

Lifting (body building) does help NHL players so I'd say your wrong. I bodybuild and it helps with hockey strength winning puck battles and helps your shot as well.

It helps a lot when you have your man pinned between you and the boards. It makes that pin possible in the first place. The more bench press strength you have the harder you can pin him against the boards. Also makes it easier to then give him a shove and take the puck when it becomes available.

Cagguila is small but plays nothing like Vey. He plays an aggressive game not unlike Gallagher or Marchand.

I was actually pretty surprised when I watched him play for the first time. He finishes all his checks and goes to the net hard. I would say his style of play will translate much better to the NHL.

Add that to the already good chemistry with Boeser!

Would sorta make up for wasting a pick on Vey. Cagguila is small though. But a free prospect is welcome anytime.

    So was Ronning :)

It definitely cant hurt in addition to what ever we get in the Draft

Pretty nice to see the chemistry between Boeser and Stecher.

Someone on 1040 said that JB was aggressively going after Cagguila as well. :) That would be awesome to get all 3!
