  1. Dream draft and scenario:

    TRADE:

    VAN trades pick 1 (11) to CHI for picks 1 (19) and 2 (44)

    1 (19). Tom Willander, RHD, Rogle J20

    2 (44). Gracyn Sawchyn, C, Seattle Thunderbirds

3 (75). Jesse Kiiskinen, RW, Pelicans

3 (91). Andrew Gibson, RHD, Sault St. Marie

Focused on need and high potential players. Willander feels like he fits what the Canucks need and compliments the future blue line beautifully. Brings intelligent two-way play with a lot of potential growth. Sawchyn is a high-end offensive playmaker with the right-handedness the team will need. Kiiskinen is one of the youngest players in the draft and would be great value found in the 3rd. Gibson would be a pipe dream, but great two way defenseman that played well at the U-18’s, and is good and not great with everything.

I could see Reinbacher playing regular minutes in the NHL way before that time-frame.

He's played pro for over a year and a half already, he's physically mature, and he could be selectively recalled from Abby and paired/sheltered with a veteran d-partner as a gradual entry into regular playing time.

The only question is, will he be still be available at 11?

If we're being realistic, we will be staring at Moore, Sandin-Pelikka, Danielson, and maybe Barlow / Leonard. How are any of those options (aside from Leonard who I love) better than Rossi? I would love Reinbacher as well, but he will definitely be overdrafted just purely on his traits (RHD, 6'3).

  3. 7 minutes ago, VegasCanuck said:

Our number 1 pressing need right now is D, preferably RD. Unless there's a guy around 20, 21 years old who's an RD that can step straight into the lineup, moving the #11 OA for anything less makes zero sense.

So basically you are saying that if the team kept the pick that... Reinbacher / Sandin-Pelikka > Rossi? I don't know if I can get with that? Rossi is a recent top 10 pick who has the produced in the AHL.  And also centre is a pressing need. Raty is a nice piece in our prospect pool, but no one else is a decent prospect that is projected to contribute to the big team. Also, I'd rather have Miller as a winger than centre if he stays with the team.

  4. VAN:

    Marco Rossi

    2023 2nd Round Pick (LV)

    MIN:

    11th Overall

    • Canucks get their young 2C with high potential. Allvin was in on the Kirby Dach trade last year and I could see him pulling this off to grab a extremely talented centre who would form a great tandem with Pettersson.
    • Minnesota looks like they are down on Rossi. Sam Steel ended up taking the 3C spot for them going into playoffs and Rossi does not seem to factor into their plans as a top 6 forward at all.
    • Also, according to Michael Russo of The Athletic....
      • I think that they’re going to trade [Addison] if they can. And same thing with Rossi. I am not convinced that if somebody came to Guerin with a first-round pick and he looked at it and said ‘You know what? We could start over…’ I think that they move him.”
        • "I will say, with Guerin in particular and Dean Evason, the people that are running the ship, he needs to show a little bit more of a pull, he really does,” Russo elaborated. “Even down the stretch, when Sam Steel took the roster spot instead of him over [Joel] Eriksson Ek… There was no anger about it, nothing, it was like, ‘Nope, I’ll wait my turn.’ And Bill wants to see him be pissed"
    • I don't know if a player at 11 will be a franchise centre or defenseman which will have enough potential in comparison to Rossi who has 104 points in 116 AHL games. If Reinbacher, Moore, Dvorsky (realistic targets) are gone, which seems to be likely, this trade would be a good substitute.
  5. Mock Draft 1.0

    1. CHI - Bedard

    2. ANA - Fantilli

    3. CBJ - Carlsson

    4. SJ - Smith

    5. MTL - Michkov

    6. ARI - Benson

    7. PHI - Reinbacher

    8. WASH - Leonard

    9. DET - Dvorsky

    10. STL - Sale

    11. VAN - Moore

    12. ARI - Sandin-Pelikka

    13. BUF - Barlow

    14. PIT - Wood

    15. NSH - Perreault

  6. For those who watch and scout regularly, what is the deal with Matthew Wood? He puts up really good numbers in his first year of NCAA hockey, but all I hear is the skating is an issue and that his good point totals are not translatable once he plays better competition. Is he actually a legit option for the Canucks at 11?

  7. Okay so the season is finally over and we can all look forward to the draft. Canucks will be picking 11th most likely, so let's take a look at how the draft may shake out. Most likely, they will be targeting C & D as high priority positions since they do not have any high end talent in the prospect pool in those positions. If we were to tier the draft board, it would go:

    Bedard

    ----

    Fantilli

    Michkov

    Carlsson

    ---

    Smith

    Benson

    Reinbacher

    Barlow

    Leonard

    ---

    Moore

    Dvorsky

    Cristall

    Honzek

    Danielson

    Simashev

    Sandin-Pelikka

I don't think they will pick a winger because they are already full with Podkolzin/Hoglander/Mikheyev/Kuzmenko/Boeser?/Lekkerimakki/McDonough/Beauvillier. If they don't consider a trade down, I'd go: Moore & Danielson. We need speed down the middle to push opposing defenses back. Pettersson and Kuzmenko can think their way through the neutral zone based on their ability to pass to open spaces and drag defenders towards them to create space for their linemates. Having a 2C that can carry through the neutral zone whether it be for chip and chase or backing the D off for our more direct wingers is something that would benefit the team more which is where I see Moore and Danielson fitting in. Candidate to slide? Ryan Leonard? Could see someone being enamored with Cristall or Simashev and reaching for their traits and having a Leonard fall into the Canucks range.

Danielson is a real sleeper in this draft I think, I'd be thrilled to get him.  My realistic targets for Van are Moore, Danielson and Reinbacher, in that order.

Love Danielson. Think his numbers don't accurately reflect his skill level plus the fact that Brandon is so bad that he has to do everything for that team. He definitely has another level if he were to be surrounded by better teammates. Great skater, likes to carry the puck through the neutral zone, has good vision to spot plays, and has a hard wrist shot. Centres will go off the board quickly so if the Canucks are around 8, 9, 10.. I can see Danielson being the pick along with Reinbacher. I did like Honzek as well, but with the injury he doesn't make sense around the Canucks range.

  9. With the Canucks slipping into the 8th spot, I think we are prime range for Reinbacher or Danielson. Those would be the 2 guys I would have my eye on realistically. Reinbacher has that steady, reliable modern game and has good mobility for a defenseman of his size. Legit top 2 potential. Danielson has been climbing my board recently. Really responsible player with playmaking he does not consistently showcase. Has a great wrist shot and great speed when carrying the puck through the neutral zone. He reminds me of Dylan Cozens as a responsible 2C who would impact the game in all facets. I have him high because of position and need for the team, but it is close between Danielson, Sale, Leonard. Would look great as a 2C behind Pettersson if Reinbacher is not available or we slip to 9/10.

If we're in the 8th pick, I think it goes Bedard, Fantilli, Carlsson, Michkov..

    5th - MON: Smith

    6th - ARZ: Benson

    7th - PHI: Dvorsky

    8th - VAN: Reinbacher

My take on the draft is always take BPA, however if it's very close (Within a tier) then I think we need to have a slight focus to C and RD as we have those organizational needs now and into the future (To be honest they always will be for most teams) when these prospects are closer to being ready.  That said, I think this would be my top 10 strictly from a Canucks perspective (Since we are and could drop a bit further down from where we currently are):

    Tier 1:

    1 - Connor Bedard

    Tier 2:

    2 - Adam Fantilli

    3 - Leo Carlsson

    4 - Matvei Michkov

    5 - Zach Benson

    Tier 3:

    6 - Dalibor Dvorsky

    7 - Will Smith
    8 - David Reinbacher

    9 - Oliver Moore

    10 - Eduard Sale

If we had to rank and tier it considering the Canucks’ needs:

    Tier 1:

    1. Connor Bedard

    Tier 2:

    2. Adam Fantilli

    3. Leo Carlsson

    4. Matvei Michkov

    5. Will Smith

    Tier 3:

    6. Zach Benson

    7. Dalibor Dvorsky

    8. David Reinbacher

    9. Eduard Sale

    10. Ryan Leonard

    11. Colby Barlow

Thats what I think the Canucks list would be close to.

I think you've gotta seriously consider it. For me the question is do you see Leonard as a play-driving C? The thing I've always been high on about Leonard is his versatility. But is he just a 3C/2W? Or could he end up more a 2C/1W? Wouldn't take him at six though. After the big four I've got Smith and Dvorsky next up. I've been watching highlights of Dvorsky at the junior level, and it's almost funny how physically imposing he is. Reminds me of Mason McTavish playing junior in his draft year, just leans on people and bulls his way to where he wants to go.

He has the play-driving ability. For me, he is nowhere close to the player he will become. Once he gets away from playing with Smith, I think he will shine more. He has the playmaking ability along with the size and finishing to generate offense from centre but hasn't been able to showcase any of it because he's been made to be the finisher on his line while Smith and Perrault dominate the possession of the puck. He is more like a 2C/1W. If the top six (Bedard, Fantilli, Michkov, Carlsson, Smith, Benson) are gone, I think the Canucks would be deciding between Leonard and Reinbacher. Dvorsky is good, but the team might like the contrast between Leonard and Pettersson as their top 2 centres.

  12. Coming around on drafting Leonard with our pick. His footspeed concerned me at first, but he actually has good speed and decent enough skating. His puck-handling is under utilized on the line he plays on, but he has enough skill to translate to centre. Also think he has enough creative instinct to drive play from centre if that is what position he plays in the future. If we're sitting at #6, could Allvin do Leonard > Benson?

Come year end I’ll have a definitive answer

but I believe the choice would be between

    Benson / Leonard / Moore / Reinbacher / Dvorsky

i doubt Sale is ranked above any of them on our list.

Benson is a special player to me he looks like a Marner / Kane type player who is so smart on the ice just makes so much space for himself and others. He isn’t strong on the dots, he doesn’t have Point speed down the middle and he is sub 6 so his game translating to C will either be a project and take a long time or just not materialize and he will be an elite winger.

Leonard - I am starting to favorite him as my top US player. I’m starting to like his game more than Will Smiths. I feel so confident he’s going to be a productive and effective NHL player. Depending on what Boston college does down the middle with Smith and Leonard I feel like he could be a C but he will probably continue his path as a winger and that’s the only unfortunate part for me for him.

the four wingers I’m incredibly high on are:

    1. Michkov

    2-3. Benson/Leonard

    4. Barlow

Moore - he’s probably the best skater for forwards in the draft. Nhl skater. That and his defensive game at this age he will be an nhl player without a doubt to me. Bottom 6 guaranteed. I have questions on his offensive iq and ceiling though and I’m not sure how that side will develop. I still like him though but I have some ??? On upside for his draft position

Dvorsky - I’ve barley seen so I refer to what some insiders have said what I’ve read and @HighOnHockey has shared and he also sounds like a very safe player to become an nhler but the ceiling might be in question. More of a shooting C that hasn’t been shooting this year as much as you’d think.

Reinbacher - again referring to what I’ve heard in him and haven’t seen much in person. Hope we have a better read on him by the seasons end

I would agree with most of what you said, which is why I think a trade down could become a realistic opportunity. Dvorsky has a great all around package as a center, but I could see Ritchie having the same potential as him too and a trade down target. Sucks for the canucks because the tier we are picking in is really winger heavy.

  14. If we pick 6th as it currently stands, do we reach for a C/RHD or pick best available? Assuming Bedard, Fantilli, Michkov, Carlsson, Smith are off the board.. we are left with Benson, Reinbacher, Leonard, Dvorsky, Cristall or Sale as the next tier. Benson has the gamebreaking abilities and has the smarts to be successful in the NHL, but our center depth is so bad that we could even trade down a few spots to take Dvorsky, Moore, Ritchie and recoup another 1st.

  15. Here we go. The reports are coming out and the Canucks will make a big move.

    VAN:

    Marcus Pettersson

    Filip Hallander

    2024 1st Round Pick

    PIT:

    J.T. Miller

    Rights to Aidan McDonough

    • I think this is realistic. If the reports are true that the player being moved isn't going to be Boeser, then I believe it would be Miller rather than Garland. Garland has been playing with Aman and Joshua which makes it seem he hasn't been showcased for any trade. This return is worse than what was rumoured last year (Chytil, Lundkvist, 1st) but the Canucks will not be able to recoup the same value. However, they get off that massive contract and start to upgrade their defense.
    • VAN Perspective: Pettersson is a defender Allvin likes, Dhaliwal has said so himself. They finally add a top 4 defender that can play decent minutes with Hughes and Bear. Hallander is the prospect I see that has the most potential.. he can play center as well. He is on the verge of the NHL and has put up decent points this year in the AHL with 30 P in 36 GP. Don't think the Canucks would be interested in Poulin and wouldn't think PIT would let go of two defensemen if Ty Smith was included in the proposal. This deal wouldn't go through with a 2023 1st in my opinion, but Hextall has said he would part with futures for a good player with term. For realism, I pushed it to a 2024 1st.
    • PIT Perspective: Reports have come up that they have discussed Miller, Chychrun and Boeser as potential acquisitions. For Miller, I can see the fit in replacing Brock McGinn on their third line wing to provide more depth scoring or he can push Zucker down to the third line as the new 2nd line LW. Sullivan wants reinforcements and with the East getting stronger, PIT might have to make a big move to maintain their playoff positioning. They don't have enough assets to get Chychrun in my opinion, and Miller is such a depressed asset that they acquisition cost will not be as high compared to other players. I don't see PIT having to send back a bad contract (i.e. Zucker) just because he is up at the end of the year, and Hextall has cleared enough space with his waiver activity today. The Canucks will have to include a sweetener which may be Hoglander, Rathbone, or McDonough. McDonough gives them a cheap bottom six option for multiple years and give enough equity to get the 1st back.

Watch Gavrikov go for a 1st +_+ the price of D is nutz.

I'm a Gavrikov fan great PKer and stay home D but if he get's a similar return to Bo wow.

Love it. Teams who miss out on Gavrikov and Chychrun will drive up the price on the next tier of defensemen like Soucy (if made available), McCabe, Schenn, Kulikov. Looking at teams like Toronto, Boston, Calgary, Tampa?, Minnesota? . One of those teams will eventually put a 3rd on the table, it'll be so hard to get a 2nd.. but out of those teams, I would say Calgary and maybe Toronto being desperate for the physicality he brings.

    1  Highest ceiling fwd

    1.5 C Danielson I would consider a protein pick.

    2 RHD

Michkov, Yager, Akey. Most realistic scenario if Michkov falls to Canucks

Bold. I like it. I can kinda see your reasoning. I always go back to Lucas Raymond vs. Quentin Byfield in 2020. It was so blatantly obvious to anyone who watched them both for a minute that Raymond was the far superior player - at that level at that time. I felt like Byfield barely deserved to be talked about in the same breath as Raymond. But of course I also understood that it's a 6'5 center vs. a 5'10 winger and we're talking about who's going to be the best NHL player at 25.

To me this is a bit of a similar vibe, but not to the same extremes. I do think it is quite clear that Smith is the best player of the three right now, but the difference in talent isn't anywhere on the level of Raymond/Byfield. And on the other side of the coin, the difference in size isn't quite so extreme either. For me, at this time I still have Smith as the 3rd best NHL prospect among them, but it's still very up in the air.

Smith v. Carlsson is closer than anything, but I don't really see the Fantilli hype to be put in the top 3. Gifted playmakers and hockey IQ tend to have more value which is why Smith and Carlsson are a definite tier above Fantilli. Those guys are able to think the game at such a level to anticipate and create spaces for themselves and their linemates, where I don't think Fantilli's power forward game is good enough to carry him at a 1st line elite level. Maybe more at the 2nd line level.

  19. 13 hours ago, HighOnHockey said:

Interesting to see how high people are ranking Moore and Leonard now. I had a feeling this might be the case when I started looking at the NTDP's record this year and realized they're putting up one of the best seasons in the history of the program, and it all seems to be radiating out from this elite core of four elite forwards and two defensemen. It only made sense that these guys will likely all go very early in the draft, but I still thought maybe a lack of size among them would hold some of them down.

I'm curious to see where the last of those forwards goes in the draft. Right now Smith, Leonard and Moore all seem to be consensus top 15, and yet Perreault is the one with the most impressive numbers of the bunch. There are question marks with him about how well his style will translate to higher levels, but he might have the most impressive stats in the entire draft. Better than Fantilli at the NCAA DI level and adjusting for league quality, arguably more impressive than Bedard's -vgranted, quality of linemates is a huge factor here. But still, although he's more of a risk than the others, he might have some of the highest upside in the draft.

I know I'm way off the board with Minnetian, but right now I have them Smith (5), Minnetian (11), Leonard (12), Moore (15) and Perreault (19).

Out of the USNDTP players, I think Smith is a dream fit for the Canucks in handedness, position and game-breaking ability. Having him slot behind Pettersson as a 1B centre would be amazing. I would even entertain trading down if the Canucks had the 3rd or 4th overall pick to 5th just because I have Smith higher than Fantilli and Carlsson.

I'll play. Just going by the current projected draft order.

7th ................................................. Dalibor Dvorsky C 6'1 - I'm assuming the big 5 (Bedard, Fantilli, Carlsson, Michkov, Smith) are gone, but hopeful Dvorsky falls to 7. Franchise center upside, and a safe bet to be at least a 2nd line center.

13th ............................................... Ryan Leonard C/RW 6'0 - BPA all day. Will be a coach and fan favorite. Maybe not the biggest upside, but this is the type of player teams win with. Can play center or wing up and down a lineup, PP, PK. He brings it all every shift and has the skill to back it up.

26th (Demko to Toronto I guess) ... Aram Minnetian RD 6'0 - I think he actually goes earlier than this, but it's my dream draft, so I'll go by the current rankings and say we get the steal of the draft.

    39th ................................................ Felix Nilsson C/LW 6'0  - High hockey IQ, tenacious, skilled two-way forward.

71st ................................................ Beckett Hendrickson LW 6'1 - Grinder with some skill. At his best down low making plays out of the corners.

103rd .............................................. Axel Landen RD 6'1 - One of the most under-rated D in the draft. Defends well, blocks shots, throws some huge hits, and even carries the puck up ice pretty effectively.

Dvorsky and Leonard are such pro-translatable players and should be NHL-ready sooner than later. After that we address a positional need on the right side defense and get some guys up front who have some upside and play the game the way we want to play it.

    I'd go with

7th -- Oliver Moore, C - USNTDP - I think he's going to go up draft boards late in the process. He is a great skater, with a really good shot. Has the potential to develop his playmaking, but his skating ability is top class and may help separate him from the 2nd tier of the top 10.

13th -- David Reinbacher, RHD - Kloten - Tall, fluid defenseman built in the modern game of transition. Good stickwork, but can stand to improve his physical play. Playing in the men's league in Switzerland can help with that.

39th -- Aram Minnetian, RHD - USNTDP - Offense first defenseman. Building up his defensive play, but great instincts in breaking out of his own zone through a good first pass or skating through trouble.

46th (mocked trade to Flames for Schenn) -- Noah Dower Nilsson, C/LW - Frolunda - Versatile, forechecking winger who does everything well who can finish plays. Has put up impressive numbers this year in the J20.

71st -- Scott Ratzlaff, G - Seattle - Would be a great pickup as the next goalie of the future along with Silovs. Had a good Hlinka, but still see him behind Hrabal, Augustine and even Bjarnason.
