...and now we watch as Virt starts to 'get it' just as we're drafting higher end skill guys who'll probably be ready in a couple years and they all mesh nicely together to form the next core ::D

    *crosses fingers*

To be quite honest, that really isn't too far-fetched of an idea. Has Virtanen ever really played with a true play-making centre?

I liked Glass at 5, but oh well. Pettersson has some incredible high-end skill, looking forward to watching him.

If we had high-end skill guys like Nylander or Ehlers in our system, no doubt Glass would have been the better pick.

  3. Can we confirm with certainty that the 2-3 players Benning wanted at 5 are Makar, Pettersson and Glass? It seems like Vilardi was never in his top-5 (probably wasn't on many teams' top-5).

If only he played his Glass game better he could have gotten Vegas to give him a 2nd :P

The player he wanted to use his 2nd's to trade a first for is probably Liljegren, but he went in the teens so it would have been more expensive.

CA had an interesting piece regarding Jim's draft plans. It seems like he wanted Kostin too, but after The Betrayal of Tryamkin he didn't want to get his heart broken again.

    Well thats interesting.

Lipanov, Dolan, Lind, Ratcliffe, Robertson, Mismash, Boqvist + so many others

Hague and Timmins def. good D options available for 33 but if he likes a forward over them he must really like them so thats cool.

At 55 and 64 there will be some good d available as well. Hopeful for 1 or 2 of Salo, Samberg and Ferraro --> who will play with makar.

If he is telling that to the media then he is probably confident he will get one of the guys he has in mind.

I really want him to take D's at 33 and 55 and use the 64 on a goalie.

Canucks are thinner than a supermodel at LW. Hence would assume that Jim targets either Isaac Ratcliff (LW) or Maxime Comtois (LW) at #33. Both players have size .....

I personally like Comtois but his production this year and towards the end of last year dropped off significantly due to a concussion he received. He skates very well for his size and has some (perceived) untapped offensive upside.

The real question is, will he be better than Glass, and know one knows right now, but I'm pretty confident saying Glass will be playing in the NHL long before Petterson.

Glass will be a good two-way guy. I watched a lot of his highlights and I just can't see the 'dynamics' Benning was looking for.

Given our rebuilding timeline, I think Pettersson has atleast 3 years to develop in the SHL/AHL before playing.

He is 18, when he is 21-22 he will have filled out. People forget that these players are kids

I believe he will too. Played against men at ~164 lbs. and excelled. Imagine if he had been ~180-190 lbs.

For me it was always Pettersson or Makar; Glass is the safer pick and will be good, but since we don't have the lottery luck to guarantee a game-breaker at 1 or 2, why not shoot for the stars?

Nice that does actually make me feel a bit better.  Neither Pastrnak nor Nylander were top 5 picks and there is a reason for that so I'd say that they are both very much "boom" prospects. That being said it does comfort me to an extent regarding Pettersson.

The problem with this draft is that there is so much promise from so many players but no sure thing.  Lets hope JB can hit a homerun

Petterrsson is definitely one of the higher-risk players to pick; he is so skinny and I have a hard time seeing him playing centre in the Pacific (most likely end up on the wing).

On the Pastrnak and Nylander issue, I think in a re-draft, both would be in the conversation for top-5 picks. With that said... we have hindsight so I guess it would be best to just trust Benning ::D

Considering the other players who will be available I just can't get excited about pettersson.  Am I wrong? It concerns me that the canucks seem so interested.  Not because he doesn't look promising but because of who we would be passing on.  I'll be so disappointed if we take him at 5.

Can someone please convince me otherwise so that I'm not sad on draft day

Well he scored at a higher pace than both Pastrnak and Nylander on their draft years. Probably the highest offensive ceiling in the draft, but that size is very concerning; Pastrnak and Nylander both had 20 lbs on Pettersson, but Pettersson is much taller than either one.

If he can gain 15-20 lbs in muscle and give us 20-30 points a season, while maintaining his defensive game, I'd be really happy with him. Be a great partner for Hutton or Stetch.

After 2 years in Utica, I think that projection could be possible ^_^

  11. I actually prefer Benning going the Tanev+ for Reinhart (and Strome to a lesser degree) route than trading for the 3rd overall. Reinhart, in my opinion, has a similar ceiling to Bo (60-65 point centre); if the + is not too ridiculous I think it would be better than picking a guy like Vilardi at 3rd.

If Benning does have a deal like that in place (unlikely given there has been little to no rumours), then we can pick Makar or Miro (if he drops to 5th) at 5. This option gives more flexibility with our later round picks. We can take a gamble on the Yamamoto's or the Robertson's because we would have Olli and Makar as a basis for our future D-core.
