  1.      There has been lots of speculation both from fans and media, and discussion surrounding what types of pieces will be moved out to set the Canucks up for the upcoming season. We need to take a step back and assess where the team is at in its rebuild. They made the playoffs, which is exactly where management hoped they would be, and this rationalized the Tofolli deal, in which they gave up T. Madden and a second in the upcoming draft. In the playoffs their top young talent displayed a level of compete we hoped they might have. We got to see rookie Hughes, sophomore Petersson, captain Horvat, and pseudo captain Miller dominate and lead the team to one win away from competing in the Western Conference final. We also got to see strong performances from Motte, Boeser, Toffoli, Tanev, Edler, and our MVP- Markstrom and his cohort Demko.

We can safely identify the core we want to move forward with, however, what we can't do is take steps backwards. JB must sign Markstrom who is a legit top 10 proven goalie in this league and trade Demko, as if he tries to ride with both we'll lose Demko in the expansion draft. There has been talk that we can throw an asset to Seattle, so they stay away from selecting Demko in the expansion draft, but that taking steps backwards. Why lose an asset, when you could deal Demko to get an asset that addresses a weakness on the team, taking steps forward. With that said I love Gaudette, but if we package him and Demko together we probably can get Dumba.

Next step forward, is moving out players like Sutter, Eriksson, and Roussel. Sutter will fetch a third round pick for sure, and maybe even a second... Eriksson would need to be dealt to a team like Detroit with a player like Virtanen to sweeten the deal. We probably get a third in return as well. Eriksson real dollars left on his contract is actually not bad, and Detroit can rationalize this type of deal as they are miles away from the cap and Virtanen's upside is still to be met. He'll play on a second line and will probably hit 25 goals. They're in essence buying a good young player for a third round pick.

The reinforcements are coming, and by that I mean Hoglander and Poldkozin. These two players are going to end up pushing guys out of spots, for example Pearson, but for now they will slot into the third line, and viola, our third line will be far more productive. This was a major concern during the our recent playoff run. Don't forget about Rathbone and OJ, as both will be ready to compete for a position in the upcoming season.

Can Leivo play center? if he can he could fulfill their need, otherwise we should not resign him, and they'll move Stecher as well.

    Flame away...

With the roster size of 15 currently and only 6 mill in cap space. The Lightning , despite their tax break, will find themselves in cap hell.

Shattenkirk is coming into UFA and is someone I would like to see the Canucks go after. With Stetcher probably wanting a pay raise it may be best to let him walk and attempt to obtain the veteran Dman who would be a good fit on our 2nd pp.

With Sergachev's ELC expiring they must let him go to avoid cap hell

Shattenkirk currently makes $1.75 million and I believe we could look into giving him a 2.5-3 million range contract for 3 to 4 years.

    No thanks

I’m liking your train of thought except I’m not a big Risto fan.

And a little confused - are you suggesting that JV is worth a 5th?  Hmm think that’s off.  Or are suggesting he’s attached to LE and that’s the exchange. Maybe be a little clearer with your proposal.

Also Risto isn’t on much term.   Personally think that we could get what Risto offers and more from Shattenkirk for free and upgrade Stecher.   Also if we trade Demko we need to spend 2 million more in cap space to find a good proven back-up.

This is why I doubt Demko will get traded before the ED if we and when JM is signed.   We can’t afford to spend 9-10 (yet) on our goalies.   JB will expose JM at the expansion draft - or JM will take at least 1 million less in salary for a NMC.   Goalies and centres are  our strengths ATM and think JB will double down on that.

No I'm saying Virtanen is the sweetener (packaged with L.E.)

Risto is on the perfect term, 2 years @5.4 mil. I think he would excel with Hughes as a pairing. He's 25 years old, 6'4" 225 lbs, skates very well, hits like a freight train, massive shot, stays healthy, and can log a tonne of minutes. To be honest, paired with Hughes he'll take a big step forward and probably be an all star. I liken him to a young M. Ohlund.

As far as JM, he is looking for a deal here in Vancouver that gives him expansion protection and I'm fine with that. 4 years at 6.25 mil per year with a NMC is completely reasonable. This deal will probably feel like a steal when he's in the running for a Vezina for the course of the deal. He also, allows the Canucks to play a certain style of offense which supports our strengths, which is our forward group and Hughes.

  4. Obviously Markstrom is our guy moving forward. It's unbelievable to me how some Canuck fans, and even media members have switched over to thinking after three games in the playoffs where Demko stood on his head that he has earned the starter position. Did anyone else notice the type of hockey the Canucks needed to play just to try and stay competitive, and they still got out shot massively in trying to shelter Demko. What Demko has done is raised his asset status, as a team like Buffalo would love to get their hands on a young goalie with so much upside.Packaged with Stecher would land Ristolienen. Risto would be a perfect fit with Hughes.

If we pull such a move we would need to move both Sutter and Eriksson.

Sutter played well enough to validate the return on him being probably a 2nd round pick. A team like the Islanders would love a guy like him- A good 200' player that could move around the second and third line, kill penalties, and win faceoffs.

Eiksson is going to need a sweetener, and unfortunately I think J.B. in a round about way alluded to the time has come to come off Virtanen. I love this player and the potential he has. He almost scored 20 goals in a shorten season, mostly on the third line, and at even strength. A team like Detroit seems to me to be the very best fit for this type of move. Detroit ships us a 5th rounder. We probably have to add a 3 rounder in 2021.

We now have room to sign Toffoli, and Tanev as well. Thoughts...

    My takeaway from the game:

    Good:

    Pettersson

    Boeser

    Motte

    Hughes

    Tanev
    Markstrom

    Okay:

    Miller

    Ferland

    Beagle

    Sutter

    Edler

    Myers

    Fantenberg

    Stecher

    Bad:

    Pearson

    Horvat

    Toffoli

    Roussel

    Gaudette

Personally, I’m not a big fan of having Gaudette as our 3C in games that matter, just doesn’t have a strong defensive game. I’d sub Virtanen in for Roussel and decide between Roussel or Sutter for the 4th line winger role. I’d also give Juolevi a chance instead of Fantenberg, I feel having possession outlet passes will help our attack rather than constant chips to the neutral zone or average passes.

Also, good chance Ferland will be suspended so we’ll see what happens there. Time being, next game I’d go with:

    Miller-Pettersson-Boeser

    Pearson-Horvat-Toffoli

    Ferland-Sutter-Virtanen

    Motte-Beagle-Gaudette/Roussel

    Hughes-Tanev

    Edler-Myers

    Juolevi-Stecher

    Markstrom

    Demko

Switch Bo and Brock on the PP to have Brock on PP1.

    Bingo!!!!

  6. 1 game down that was considered an exhibition game, but the reality of that game against the Jets, was that it looked a lot like a mid-season game with a complete rosters, true physicality, and full efforts. OJ did not look out of place whatsoever, in fact he made some very astute plays, and his outlet passes led to a couple of decent shots on goals. He might be the best outlet passer on the team, which is exactly what this team needs in aiding their transitions. At 6'3" and 215 lbs, and skates well he could eventually replace Edler as their second LD. Let's hope he secures that third line LD for the playoffs, and watch this young man grow and gain confidence in this years playoffs. Which will hopefully result in him coming into next year and establishing himself as finally arriving. This is the type of story that "Canuck Nation" can truly get behind; never give up, and to have faith in our GM.

I disagree, it's not a no brainer at all. Like I said, our drafting success doesn't mean we're suddenly okay to stop gathering talented, young prospects. Our young, top guys are going to all need to be paid over the next few years and we're going to need guys on ELC's to step in. And first/second round picks have a better chance at turning into something. Given how we've been drafting I think it'd be foolish to not keep as many picks as possible, we need as much talent in the prospect pool as possible.

We also have no idea what Toffoli actually wants, for all we know he might be interested in seeing what his options are as a UFA. He showed well during his ten games here, but we aren't the only team who'd be interested in a winger who put up 44 points in 68 games, with 24 of those points being goals. Players only get so many chances to explore the UFA option. People keep talking as if it's a certainty that he'll sign when it's not.

As for Podz and Hoglander, until they both do something at the NHL level they're just prospects. They're great prospects, and I'm rooting for them, but saying they'll be legit top 6 guys before they've even played a game is silly. They're both unknowns at the NHL level, and guys stepping in and tearing things up right away is the exception to the norm.

There's also no guarantee a first alone would be enough to make a team take Loui anyway, it could very well take more. Every other GM knows we're in a tough spot, of course they're going to try and capitalize on that in any discussion involving Loui. Like I said, there could very well be a bidding wars for team's excess cap space, we're definitely not the only team facing tough decisions because of the cap. Loui also has a NTC, he straight up controls his destiny when it comes to trades.

in your argument you actually validated my point, therefore I thank you sir. Again, it's a no brainer

  8. 18 hours ago, Coconuts said:

Because drafting has been one of the Canuck organization's strengths the last number of years, and our success doesn't mean we don't need to continue filling the prospect pool with quality prospects. We're already losing a first this year or next because of the Miller trade. Petey and Hughes are gonna get paid, Horvat and Boeser on their next contracts too. The importance of having quality youth on ELC's isn't going to diminish any time soon.

Tacking on pieces to move Loui is an option, but given how the cap is going to be stagnant the next number of seasons it'll be an even more expensive move now than it would have been at the deadline. Teams with cap space will likely have a number of capped out teams looking to get some relief, as silly as it seems that could lead to a bidding war for other team's cap space.

Hmm...lose toffoli or boeser, legit top 6 players, of which the Canucks have been starved of for the last 20 years, or move a prospect/pick + Louie. It's a no brainer. Don't forget both Podkolzin and Hoglander will be legit top 6 as well. This will be the very best top 6 the Canucks has ever iced, and i say we go to our strengths.

I don't think there are many folks still clinging on to the belief that we aren't in a huge cap mess that is going to cost us good players this year and probably next.  We are almost certainly facing being worse next season rather than better.  Bettman has also now repeatedly denied that compliance buyouts are going to be a thing. Owners don't want to spend more real money and it makes escrow worse for players.

There are moves to get out of it and actually improve, but I don't know that management has the boldness or creativity to do them.  Failing to do them or something similar means we are definitely a much worse team next year, especially on defence.

    1.  Sign Toffoli and trade Boeser for a young top 4 D
This says nothing about each of their relative abilities as players or potential.  It is simply about what we can afford and what assets we can get back.  If we don't sign Toffoli we just lose him for nothing.  Toffoli can do what Boeser does in our lineup at a similar rate so it is pretty much a wash.  With the current economics you can certainly get Toffoli for less than Boeser's cap hit, and aren't faced with a big raise that Boeser will get in two more years at a time that we will have spent all our money on our two superstars.  Boeser can get you a badly needed young top 4 RD in return... Dumba/Severson/Ristolainen or something similar (small pieces extra packaged going on way or another to even things up).

    2.  Trade Virtanen and Demko for picks and cap dumps.
Assuming it is a given that we sign Markstrom for 4 years or more, Demko becomes a luxury.  It is great to have luxuries, but we just can't afford it right now.  Virtanen is going to be expensive for what he brings, and there is quite a bit of evidence that he may have hit a high water mark this year.  There is enough shine on a young 1st round power forward who can score 20 goals.  You may be able to get rid of Baertschi and Sutter plus get some decent picks in return for moving these guys out.  It sounds crazy, but the opportunity cost of keeping Virtanen (what we lose in order to re-sign him) is huge at this point and doesn't make us better.  Those dollars can simply be better spent on another player.

    3.   Demote Eriksson and tell him he isn't coming to camp.
Put pressure on him to retire or mutually terminate his contract so he can go play in Dallas or somewhere at $1.5 million to finish off his career rather than riding a bus for two years.

So then we have filled a top 4 D hole and shaved over $7.5 million off the cap.  We have also opened up a 2nd line RW slot for Podkolzin who will be able to join us as soon as early next season (assuming our season doesn't start until Dec/Jan and the KHL still ends in Feb/March).

We sign Leivo, a cheaper veteran goalie backup, and if Ferland isn't an option, just sign or trade for a bottom 6 veteran winger on a 1yr cheap contract for some depth.  There will be lots of guys who aren't going to get contract offers because there will be so little money in the system.  Sign Tanev if there happens to be a cheaper deal for him, but assume that isn't the case.

    Miller-Petterson-Toffoli
    Pearson-Horvat-Leivo
    Roussel-Gaudette-MacEwan
    Ferland-Beagle-Motte

    Hughes-XXX (Severson/Dumba/etc)
    Edler-Myers
    Juolevi/Benn-Tryamkin/Rafferty
    Stecher

    Markstrom
    XXX

That is a $73-75 million dollar roster even with Eriksson buried that leaves room for pushed ELC overages as well as absorbing next year's ELC bonuses with lots of wiggle room.  It even allows the possibility of taking on a contract from a cap strapped team in either a Miller type deal or for futures.  20-40 games into next season we can also bring in Podkolzin to push guys on the right side down the roster.  If Eriksson bails on his contract we would be sitting VERY pretty in the short term and allowing us to sign both our superstars to max term contracts rather than bridge deals.

An alternative would be to not try to find a D this year and keep both Boeser and Toffoli.  Let our defence be horrible and test out to see who can actually play (Juolevi, Rafferty, Tryamkin, Rathbone, etc) so we know what we have.  Next offseason is a time to snipe D as teams will have solid #4 guys they can't protect in expansion and can be had for relatively cheap... you could get someone as good as Haydn Fleury who is probably exposed, or one of Boston's young D who can't be protected, probably 10 teams have guys they would hate to lose for free that would be legit top 4 guys as upgrades for us.  The downside of that is that we would almost certainly not be very good next season if that was the case (please in that scenario Tanev sign a bargain 1 year deal!)

You just set the team back 5 years, no thanks. Boeser only gets traded if we get a legit top line defender back; ala Seth Jones for Ryan Johansen deal, otherwise no way do you give Boeser up, as he;s far too valuable as our number one RW. Yes 100% to resigning Tofolli- 4 years 5.5 million per year. Our second line becomes legit, and when you add either Podkolzin or Hoglander to the team we'll have two very strong forward lines that will pull vault the Canucks into legit contender status for years to come.

I agree that we need to move Demko, and We also need to move Sutter and Stecher. Is there a package where we might be able to recover some picks? I think the Islanders would love all three players so maybe there's a possible trading partner. Re-signing Tanev and Markstrom are priorities as well. Virtanen should not be moved, and I think time will bear out how important this young man will be to this team, with game changing goals, pace-making speed, physical presence, and heavy hockey which is required to win in the playoffs. He can play on any line and make a difference at any time. He'll get better with time and more exposure to JT Miller. I think the push your looking for on the back end will come from our prospects like Rafferty, OJ, WOO, and Rathbone. I think eventually one of those guys will be one of our top 2 defenders, and another one of them will be in our top 4. Way cheaper then bringing in a 6-7 million dollar Dumba.

Then the argument should be that 6 mil is too much for Edler,  and the thought of paying Tanev 5+ m per in UFA is eye rolling..
.. and don’t get me started on Dead head Eriksson.

The truth is we are arguing over a million dollars because of the above players and the Luongo Shtick.

So Tryamkin takes the heat over a difference of a million dollars because of other mis givings.

Lets scrutinize what is truly disproportionate,

the top end and the lack of attrition,

not the bottom end and the real future.

.. 2m for one season would put NT into UFA.

by then he will have proved himself to be worth 4+ per..

3 mil is close to appropriate for anything around to a 2-4 year deal.

I think the beginning of next season it’s without Tanev, signing him to anything long term is going to bite.. so is anything over what he already makes.. he is over rated.

This team is long over due to be bringing its D prospects in to play.

Rafferty as a 25 year old will do fine.

Rathbone might be another sweet surprise like Hughes.

Breisboise is chomping at the bit.

again, I’m sure Tryamkin just wants to play, and what ever amount he signs for is probably more concerning for us than what it needs to be.

There are bigger fish to fry.

Tryamkin is the bottom of the pile, in regards to things to do list for JB. Please don't forget this player up'ed and left the Canucks high and dry because he wanted to play on a certain side of the ice, and he considered himself better then he was. We should have zero loyalty to him as he has us. Preferably we could deal his rights to get a pick. There is no room for a player who is a fair skater, is a fair outlet passer, and for his size plays as passive as he does.

I’m happy to discuss any specific issues that you have with my proposals, but if you’re just going to resort to mindless name calling like a 6 year old, then I’ll pass.

Fair enough, sorry for the visceral reaction, but 1. Pods is special, he's a cross between TJ Oshie and Dustin Brown, and you don't throw that sort of player away. Ipod will be a foundational part of our future for years to come. Guys like Pods, Hogs, and Bonner will be vital pieces to our cup puzzle. You might consider selling them off when the team has made a number of deep runs. 2. Virtanen is just beginning to become the player we all hoped for, so we do not want to move him. 3. A hard pass on Tryamkin, as he was ok in the 3rd best league in the world.4. Gaudette is not going anywhere. By moving him your going backwards with the rebuild and detracting from building. 5. Leivo no longer fits, as he looks poor in a bottom six role, and not good enough to be a top six.

Your right about Toffoli, as they need to resign him. Sutter as well your correct on, as they need to try and recover a 2nd rounder, but not retaining salary. Maybe package him up with a defender like Benn to try and land that coveted pick.

[proposal] Some Canucks trades and moves that I’d like but you’d probably hate

    1) Eriksson and Demko to Ottawa or Detroit for a cheap back-up.

-The Canucks risk losing Demko to the Expansion Draft anyways.   Even if they don’t, they’ll need to find a way to get Eriksson’s contract off the books so that they can have enough money to re-up guys like Pettersson, Hughes, etc.   The Sens or Wings get a solid young goalie that can help them by taking on a bad contract.

    2) Podkolzin for Noah Dobson:

-The Islanders get a better prospect, while we get a prospect that plays a more important position.   The Isles already have Bode Wilde as a right side D prospect and so they might be interested in becoming more well rounded.  Podkzolin playing Barzal could be a real nightmare for them.  Dobson gives the Canucks a future top pairing all situations dman that can over from Edler one day.  We don’t have anyone in our system that can effectively replace what Edler brings to the table.

    3) Virtanen for Colton Sissons:   The Canucks get a young legitimate shut down center at a very good cap hit.   The presence of Sissons would allow for the Canucks to free up Horvat a little more and let Horvat play in more offensive roles instead of being our defacto shut down guy (something that Sutter was supposed to do by the way).  Virtanen is a better play than Sissons but Sissons is cheaper and would play a much more important role for us when you consider the fact that we’d have Boeser and Toffoli already.

    4) Stecher either gets moved for a pick or is unqualified.

    5) Tryamkin comes back

    6) Gaudette moved for a draft pick.

    7) Baertschi traded with 50% retention for a pick.

    8) Sutter traded at 50% retention for a pick.

    9) Chris Tanev walks to clear cap space

    10) Trade Jordie Benn for a draft pick.

    11) Rafferty makes the team.

    12) Re-sign Toffoli

    13) Re-sign Leivo

    14) Re-sign Motte

    New line-up:

    Miller-Pettersson-Toffoli

    Pearson-Horvat-Boeser

    Ferland-Sissons-Leivo

    Motte-Beagle-MacEwen

    Edler-Myers

    Hughes-Dobson

    Tryamkin-Rafferty

    Markstrom

    NewBackUp

You guys do not have to thank me all at once for saving the Canucks and building us a winner beyond this season.  :-p

Sorry you are dreaming big time....Pettersson lead the SHL in scoring and playoffs..

Hoglander is realistically 2 years away from the NHL..

Now if your talking Podkolzin- 19,  6'1, 200 lbs he will come play in NHL next March after KHL season is over. He had a excellent playoff.

    Hoglander 19, 5'9, 180lbs..

    2018- 19  - GP 50 - G 7 - PTS 14

2019 - 20    GP 41 -  G 9 - PTS  16    You think is is making the NHL ??? Big No Sorry.. Lets hope he  plays top 6 in Utica?

    Remember Anton Rodin -- 2019 -2000 --- GP 46 - G 14   PTS 46

Sorry Hoglander will not be a impact player next season and he will be playing in Utica ..

Demko will be a number #1 goalie before 2022 season...He has dominated at each level college breaking Cory Schneider's record, played at world JR U20 - AHL 3 years and now  adjusting to NHL game at 24 years old..

Demko played 27 NHL games this season at age 24 maybe at 2 games that he wasn't happy with...He played very well ....

So Demko is following same path as Cory Schneider..

Cory played 3 seasons in Utica and at age 26 he played 25 NHL games and had a excellent career..

Demko will be as good as Cory Schneider..

    And Cory Schneider is terrible...
