I think his goal tonight sealed the deal.   He has a shot that is elite - period.   Laine comparison for shot - that is nuts that Canucks have this kid and was a 23rd pick to boot.   You can't teach a shot like that.

...and to think, the kid is coming off of a wrist injury.  Could it be that there's more to come with that wrist shot of his?

...and to think, Kesler had to work each off season to strengthen his wrist shot only to get it to slightly above average (sorry, but I'm a Kesler-hater and had to throw that in...can't help myself).

No need to rush OJ he will be a cornerstone piece (if not traded for one) in the future.. I could see this year and next in junior followed by 3-4 years in the AHL honing his game against adults before the Canucks bring him up full time.

Stecher is listed at 5-11, 192 on Elite Prospects.  You could call that undersized if you like but as long as his positioning is sound, his size won't be an issue.  We're going to see his current dimensions at the weigh in later this week before main camp.

From watching a couple of periods (streamed) on Friday, the guy is nothing if not quick.  His vision looked good and if zone exits are going to be a priority, it looks like he can be part of the solution.

I think he's in Utica this year if only because depth is much better on D this year.  He's likely behind Biega on the right side and 10 on the depth chart.  So I wouldn't rule out a call up.  Subban had better be paying attention.

And yes, things can change at camp.

...and he's listed at 5' 8" 190 lbs. by the Canucks and 5' 10" 190 lbs. by Hockeydb.com.  Will the real Troy Stetcher please announce himself?

Love the elite skill: puck on stick, in danger area, EYES UP ICE.

Though he's showing good habits in the picture, that's summer pick up hockey, Alf.  Even an old, washed up guy like me can do that on the ice in the summer time.  If Stetcher can do what he's doing in summer hockey in the NHL, then we've got something to be REALLY excited about.

MLB STAR EDWIN ENCARNACIONSUED FOR BATTERY... STD Allegations

8/22/2016 12:23 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Toronto Blue Jays superstar Edwin Encarnacion has been sued by a woman who claims he knowingly gave her multiple STDs during a romantic weekend ... TMZ Sports has learned.

The woman behind the lawsuit claims she's a 24-year-old family friend of the MLB star who first met him in 2013.

In her lawsuit, the woman claims she hooked up with one of Edwin's teammates in 2015 -- but was tested in December 2015 at a Planned Parenthood and was told she was clean.

The woman claims she later hooked up with Edwin during a trip to Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic in February 2016 ... and had unprotected sex on at least 2 occasions.

Problem is ... the woman claims she was in pain in the days after the hookup and thought she had Zika -- so she went to a doctor.

She later learned it was NOT Zika -- but rather two STDs.

The woman claims she contacted Edwin -- but he insisted he was clean and "suggested she may have picked up [the STDs] when they went 4-wheeling and she swam in the river."

The woman says Edwin later backed off his claims about being STD-free -- and then stopped contacting her altogether. The woman claims she now believes he knew he was carrying STDs all along.

The woman is suing Edwin for battery, misrepresentation of the facts and more -- and is demanding more than $11.5 MILLION to make things right.

We reached out to Edwin's agent -- who told us "no comment."

    ========================================================

Woman sounds like an opportunist...hooked up with EE's teammate and then hooked up with EE in Punta Cana.   Gotta laugh at EE's theory that the woman caught the STDs four wheeling or swimming in the river.  Sounds like a Seinfeld episode.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say Eriksson will wear no. 11.  It's time to put the Wayne Maki pseudo-retirement and the stench of Messier to rest.

Larsen has a one way contract so either he plays or is traded. Stecher can be called up with no issues.

I don't think Larsen has signed yet...but when he does sign, JB'll probably sign him to a one-way deal.

There is no need to bother him during his current run with BC. Once his season is over let a day or two pass, then give the guy a 1st class ticket for himself , his family and agent. Tour them around Vancouver. Get a Contract signed, Then 1st class to Utica to practice and maybe see some ice this year with the Comets

The only way Demko plays for Utica this season is if he signs a deal with the Canucks that starts July 1, 2016 and he signs a PTO with the Comets for the balance of this regular season.

Boeser is going to be the next Bossy. You can quote me on that.  Too bad he can't wear #22...

Maybe Boeser can wear 44 and be twice as good as Bossy was (I saw Bossy play while he was in his prime, and that probably won't be likely...but one can wish).

I think Desi, he's entertaining as long as you don't take what he says seriously.

I think he will score 25-30 goals in his prime, but he needs to work on his skating

    Agreed on Desi...

Boeser doesn't have that blazing straight line speed, but he has that sneaky quickness that allows him to get away from the check and has that uncanny ability to find open space on the ice.  And that shot.  Boeser reminds me of a less chunky/fitter Brett Hull with playmaking skills.

Why is there always a Gooseberries, Gstank fight in every prospect thread?

Epic battle between two mental giants.  Don't know what is more entertaining...Stank vs. Baumer or Stank vs. Goose...or Stank vs. anyone vs. desi's posts.

How about that Boeser kid? He's going to be a good one.

Surprised; he's got more shutouts than Demko

How does Garteig with those gawdy BCHL numbers not get drafted?  Looks like he's just gotten better and better since his freshman season at Quinnipiac.  If I'm JB, I would take a flyer on this guy.

One of my favourite shifts ever as a minor hockey player was in Midget when a teammate and I had about 8 hits in under a minute, but looking back we never touched the puck since they had possession the whole time. Hitting everything that moved on their team was incredibly fun, but was completely ineffective since no one else picked up the puck or we were hitting just after they'd already moved it.

That's why I don't like people using the blanket statement of we need to be bigger, tougher and have to hit more than everyone all the time. I'd rather be getting possession any way I can (whether that's hitting, stripping a player of the puck, or causing turnovers another way) than focusing on having the highest hit totals.

Gaunce is effective (and will be in the NHL) because he's cerebral defensively. It helps him on offence to an extent but he doesn't have as much out and out skill to be a top 6 type of producer at the NHL level (most likely).

Great trip down memory lane, hey elvis?  I agree that the game is tilted in your favor when you have the puck more than the other team does...I remember Barry Beck (remember him?) saying that it would be nice if his team (the Rangers at the time) were given a puck to play with when they were playing the Central Red Army team way back when.  That comment has indelibly stuck with me all these years.

    Agreed.

It's strange how often this criticism comes up with Gaunce. Some of the local Utica posters (on another forum which shall not be named) occasionally come out with game reports where they question Gaunce's commitment and intensity. They tend to complain that he's "not doing anything" and "hanging back" too much. They seem to think he needs to be chasing after the play more.

I've probably posted the following quote 2-3 times already but I always find that Gaunce is able to defend himself against these criticisms in his own words much more eloquently than I can:

    http://sports.yahoo.com/news/for-belleville-s-brendan-gaunce--there-s-no-crying-in-hockey-194647701.html

The funny thing is that even in these games where Gaunce is being criticized for supposedly "not working hard enough" or not showing enough "intensity," he still seems to always end up getting credited with making some key plays (at either end of the ice).

Often, the value of these contributions gets diminished by his critics who suggest that Gaunce didn't work very hard and simply benefited by "being in the right place at the right time."

I'd argue that this is probably Brendan's greatest strength and his "being in the right place at the right time" is rarely accidental. More often, it's the result of this player having superior on-ice awareness, anticipation, and hockey sense.

Gaunce seems to regularly find himself in the right place to break up the opposition's offence. Whether it's disrupting the rush or intercepting a pass or somehow finding himself on a loose puck before anyone else.

I've watched Brendan closely over the years and very often, you see him hanging back a little, maybe not committing to the immediate flow of the play quite as much as you'd normally like.  He can sometimes seem out of sync with his teammates and sometimes even appear to be working outside of his coach's systems. Then, a few moments later, the ice has tilted, the play's headed the other direction, his teammates look exposed, but somehow Gaunce is in position and has found the right spot on the ice to stop what would otherwise been a disaster for his team.

Similarly, on the offensive side, you see him looking maybe "low energy" or lacking "intensity" but then, all of a sudden, he's right there around the net to cash on a rebound. Or he's somehow alone just where the puck has come loose from the pack. Or he's intercepted a pass and gotten a quick shot off while the goalie and D are off balance.

So many of his goals have been "right place at the right time."

This has been the case at every level he's played.  And I expect when Gaunce makes the NHL, he'll continue to find himself in "the right place at the right time" (even at the highest level and fastest pace the game has in the world).

As far as "intensity" you just need to watch Gaunce. On or off the ice, look in that kid's eyes. Watch him for a minute. Honestly, I think Brendan is one of the more "intense" guys we have. But his intensity is in how closely he watches the game. How deeply he understands it. How much he's thinking about every possibility and trying to anticipate the flow of the play quicker than everyone else on the ice.

His intensity is certainly more mental than physical.  But so long as that "mental intensity" allows Gaunce to keep finding ways to get to "the right place at the right time," I'm just fine with him occasionally looking like he's "not doing anything" during some of his shifts.

I've got a guy on my team who's always running around like a chicken with his head cut off.  He looks busy and intense most of the time.  But he's the least productive guy on my team who takes 10 hours and a 1,000 units of resources that would take an efficient and smart person 2 hours and 100 units of resource.  I'd rather have a team full of quiet and efficient guys like Gaunce over a bunch of unproductive yahoos like the guy who works for me.

In case anyone wanted to know, I'm trying to find a place somewhere else in our organization for this yahoo, but none of the other department heads are willing to take him off my hands and onto their team.

If one assumes he'd have some adjustment period and he isn't going to make the Canucks instantly a good team, I'd question whether it's worth burning a year off his elc.

I am going to assume that you prefer the Canucks wait til next season so to benefit from a full season of year of his ELC...fair position to take.  I'm of the opinion that a player coming into the NHL as a 22 year old (whether as a college grad or European player), that first year of the ELC is not that big of a deal, as long as you get the player to sign a three year ELC.  This way, you will get at least one year on the players ELC+1 contract at a relatively low cap hit (unless you're Kevin Lowe/Craig McTavish who gave ridiculous ELC + 1 contracts to their players).

  16. I'm thinking Tryamkin would be better on the smaller NHL ice surface than on the wider/bigger International ice surface.  I'd be all for fast tracking him into the NHL this season if he does come over after his KHL season is over.  What's there to lose?

Yah, coz the Sharks are going to deal their best player who so happens to have a friendly cap hit with another year to go to a division rival that comes knocking on their door to make a deal.  Yup...that's sure to happen.  In bizarro world.

I'd say the wound of Jensen's draft has healed sufficiently to accept salt.  Jensen is crap compared to those guys.  I can see missing out on the bunch, except for Jenner.  How could we pass on a guy named Boone?  Was that more than the recommended daily1000 mg of sodium?  I might have put that on a little thick.  :)

You're an alien...you're allowed to do whatever the hell you want .  I bet you can kick the crap out that alien on American Dad.

Who else could we have drafted instead of him?

Rickard Rakell, Tomas Jurco, Boone Jenner, Brandon Saad, Brett Ritchie, Matt Nieto, Joel Edmundson, Adam Lowry and 130 pounder Johnny Gaudreau.  But that's with the benefit of hindsight.

  20. 1 hour ago, Alflives said:

That's not my point at all.  My point is: with our prospects, let's leave them to develop before insisting other picks would have been better.  Give it a couple of years, then have at it.  Right now REALLY who knows?

Is it safe to lay into Nicklas Jensen yet, Alf?  He's in his third pro season.
