He is no defensive phenom there's no doubt about that. But he is doing a pretty good job recovering his game and is producing at a rate that is making his contract look at least reasonable.

If anything I'll say his last 5 games have been better. Probably having the TDL behind him has helped. Tocchet seems to be helping everyone's game.

  2. I'm convinced the only way Boeser will ever be useful is if he can posess his shot from his rookie year. At that time he could shoot as hard as Petey. It's non existent now. Is it his wrist? If he cant get it  back then see ya as he just isnt a playmaker or a checker doesnt skate well. I remember one game in his rookie year I was at the game they played LA and he got roughed up by Doughty and because he was injured he couldn't start the power play. Once they dropped the puck they instantly switched him on the ice and 6 seconds later he blasted one past Quick. I belive he had a hatrick.  How do you lose that talent besides an injury?

Save all our cap space for legit top 4’s and give guys like Brisebois, Wolanin, and Juulsen a shot.

Cant be paying 2+ mil for a bottom pair defender. And if we are that money should go to Schenn not Bear.

Juulsen has been awful. Brisebois can help out as as a 7th guy though even he had a brutal giveaway last night. I would definitely be happy to give Wolanin a shot as he seems like a  pretty sound player a guy you just don't notice good or bad but can eat some minutes.

  4. What message does this send to our scouts? The fact that the general manager has no faith that we can't get a better player then Hronek with the a top 15 pick and a top 40 pick really says something.  Aside from scouting I think under Allvin the development side of the organization has lots of upside. The Sedins seem to be doing some great work in Abby. I think for the Canucks now is the time to prioritize getting elite talent out of junior where we can structure their game the way we want to play.

These quick fixes just mean more mediocrity.

  5. I'll never like this trade. The timing is horrible and all it is a quick fix. This team is absolutely not ready for a move like this. We're lucky to have a good core here to build on. This team doesn't need a 5 year rebuild. If we had a really good draft this year within 2 years we could have had a really good team that's cost controlled. We would have most of the bad contracts expired. Yes OEL is going to be a major issue there is no good way to solve that problem. I don't think we've learned from OEL though I think this management team will always look for that next quick fix by  overpaying UFAs.

If you look at the Lightning which has made the cup final 3 years in a row they are built from within. Almost the entire core is drafted. They don't carry bad contracts.

Even if they drafted a D with the NYI 1st. That player would probably take 5 years to get to the NHL, and who knows how good they would actually be. Hronek is only 25 (2 years older than Hughes). This is a move to set them up for the future. Who knows what kind of future that Islander pick will have.

Canucks still have their lotto pick

A good prospect wouldn't take 5 years to make a difference.  That islanders pick could also potentially be a lottery pick. This team flat out needs to draft. We need guys that are cost controlled for many years. Not a guy that's 1 year away from Ufa that's going to get paid.

I think we gotta remember we didn't move our pick. That's the real money maker. The Isles pick at best was gonna get us a player we hope would become a Hronek type 5-7 years from now. By then Hughes and Petey are either gone or approaching the end of their prime, and who knows what we have in Demko, 5 years from now he's 33. Our pick at least has the chance of being a difference maker in 2-3 years.

Horvat for Hronek, Beauvillier and Raty is a pretty big trade for us. We got a cheaper center and helped improve a depleted RD spot and a speedy winger. We still need more work. If the plan was full rebuild, we may as well move Hughes and Petey. But we all knew the idea was retool. We had an extra 1st rounder to target a mid 25 year old player, the fact he's a RD is actually very nice for us. If it was another winger I would have smashed my monitor.

We also gave up a 2nd this year where we could of potentially got a pretty good defenceman. There is no way this deal should have happened.

Hughes isn’t ‘the’ or ‘a’ problem. The idea of trading him is outrageous.

I agree. It carries a lot of risk. If we trade for a bunch of futures and they don't turn out we're really screwed.  It's not a trade we need to make so if we do decide to  then it has to be a massive overpayment.

  9. I don't think management should buyout any players on this team for at least two years. Jim Benning handcuffed us on the OEL trade. We could of just kept the 3 bad contracts that went to Arizona rode it out for one year. If we buyout OEL will have dead cap for 8 years that's unacceptable.  Our next competitive window is probably 3-4 years away if we draft well in the year or two. Tocchet needs to work with OEL to get the most out of him whatever that is. Keep his morale up.

  10. I don't watch junior hockey that much but I went for the second time last night. Saw the Rockets Giants game. What does everyone think of Caden Price? Could he be there in the second round? He looked pretty well rounded at both ends of the rink. Made a nice play to keep the puck in the zone.

  11. I don't expect that Rick Tocchet will make this team much better in the short term.  He wants to reduce the minutes of our top 6 player and rely on the bottom 6 a bit more but the fact of the matter is our bottom 6 sucks. More of Joshua Lazar Studnika isn't going to help. BB was forced to play his top 6 big minutes because Alvin built a terrible roster. No depth in goaltending- between Demkos injury and slow start we had to become dependent on two minor league goalies that are way in over their head. The 6 defenseman we have can't keep the puck out of there own net. I mean you got Schenn playing as a #2 d,  Bear as a #3/4, OEL is a pylon. Burroughs and Stillman are barely even capable. Hughes is primarily an offensive dman. BB had no choice but to play river hockey.

Alvin needs to be held accountable he had 12+ months to impact the roster and has failed miserably.  Other then Kuzmenko his moves are failing. Drafted a bust in the first round. Failed to improve the D. Should of had a reliable back up goalie.

Alvin is a PR nightmare and failed the fans of this franchise.  I can't even listen to his press conferences. All I hear is brick by brick everytime he needs to stop saying that. I don't even trust him to make a good trade for Horvat. We could be in for a lot of mediocre hockey for a long time. I hope not but it's reality.

  12. This owner and management team are embarrassing. Why string Bruce along? Just fire him if you don't want him. Bruce is a human being and a very good coach. I wouldn't like it if my boss held a press conference and talked about how he was talking to people about my replacement and still expecting me to perform. I personally would keep Bruce.

Rutherford hasn't made one good move. Not one fan wants the retool. REBUILD the team from the ground up.

  13. Under no circumstances can management re sign Horvat. We need to tear down to the studs.  Get 5-6 top 3 picks this year and next. Put them all down in Abby for the next 2-3 years and there won't be pressure on one single prospect to get this team to the top. Combined with Petterson and Hughes we could be very good in three years. But we can't waste time getting to the inevitable.  Can't continually signing cap anchors that are past their prime. We need to do this right.
