  1. 'Mom, I'm in trouble': Grande Prairie woman faces decade in Thai prison

One of two tourists charged with vandalism for spray painting graffiti on an ancient red-brick wall in northern Thailand is from Grande Prairie, Alta.

Closed-circuit TV footage allegedly shows the pair spray-painting a wall near the Tha Phae Gate, the main entrance to the city's old town.

"They admitted to the crime," Police Major Anon Cherdchutrakulthong told Reuters. "When people visit somewhere they should know not to [leave] graffiti

Not an event, but not worthy of a thread either. I don't have much sympathy for someone going to a foreign country and spray painting an ancient wall, but hey, I've done some dumb things in my life too....just not this astronomically blatantly stupid.

Let this be a lesson to Canadians travelling abroad, don't be an idiot.

Hopefully she just gets the fine and a one way ticket and lifetime ban.

Hes not coming back he hated the city unfortunately such an amazing build and talent to bad he was mistreated by the coach and burnt the bridge

Two burnt bridge comments, but I dare say he wasn't here long enough to burn a bridge.  I think he needed (perhaps still needs) some time to mature.  The fans loved him here, so why wouldn't he come back?  I agree that if he indeed doesn't like the town, we can trade him somewhere he wants to go.  He will be even more valuable in a year or two if he continues his progression.  I can't see him hating the team because of the treatment he received, it wasn't that atrocious under the circumstances, and I really hope he comes back here and has a career as a Canuck.

  3. I never disliked or crapped on Dorsett, but I've never really give him any credit either.  He deserves some credit from me, It's not just the scoring start to the season, he's really working out there, and that attitude is what we need for a quicker turnaround with our rebuild.  We've had a lot of mid-level talent in the past 4 seasons and I lumped Dorsett in that group. I didn't really give him much consideration, he was a role player who's talent could be replaced by any number of the Kenins' Cracknells of the league.  I think I was missing his intangibles.  He can score in the right situations, and he's a perfect energy role guy.  I'm glad he's here for this incarnation of the Canucks.

If you’ve seen TNG 10 times over, which is the required viewing amount, I can’t say “Don’t bother”, because you obviously enjoy Star Trek. But you will be disappointed.

The new movies are barely Star Trek (except Beyond), but they at least have moments of Star Trek in them, which makes them watchable. But Discovery is is just a constant reminder of “What if?”

So it's Shaka, when the walls fell.  I'll end up watching it at some point I'm sure.

    Star Trek Discovery - Update

I’m sure most here aren’t Star Trek nerds, so my updated assessment (like my movies reviews) probably fall on deaf ears. But here goes.

So, I really think this new series is quite awful. For those unfamiliar, the timeline of this series takes place between Star Trek Enterprise (Scott Bakula version) and 10 year before Star Trek TOS (Shatner). And this is where the problems start.

If you’re a Star Trek fan, this timeline falls into when the Prime Directive wasn’t a thing yet. Which means, as a viewer, we’ve already seen this before. We’ve seen where Captains and Crew have made questionable decisions, as they were allowed more leeway. I could get more into this, but a discussion like this is better over dialogue, because as ST fans know, one could talk for hours. So long story short on this issue, if you’re a Star Trek fan (or not), this is a problem. They’ve tapped out this area already and it’s unnecessary.

Adding to the above, but it’s own problem altogether, is that because of the timeline, they are at war. This means that the overall tone of the show is very dark. As a viewer of all the seasons, the entire point of the Star Trek universe is that they were apart of the Federation; which aspired to being something greater. A world that we, as the viewer, wanted to be apart of. A world that wanted to be peaceful in their dealings with each other and other cultures. This new series does not follow this. The tone, which is incredibly dark, also shows the crew of the Discovery as people who are not only cold with each other, but also don’t trust one another (which is incredibly odd) and have zero chemistry. This is a massive problem with the show. Knowing that the Federation exists due to different species and cultures working together for something greater, seeing a crew that has no trust towards each other, which again is odd because it’s based on nothing, is incredibly confusing and counter to their entire belief system.

Lastly, the characters are cold, have no chemistry, and worst of all, have no heart. There’s no reason to like any of these people or care about them. They are empty vessels.

If you’re into Star Trek, you’ll probably hate it. If you want to get into Star Trek and have never seen it before, don’t watch this one to get into it. And if you hate Star Trek, you’ll probably hate this, because it just plain sucks.

Damn.  I didn't want to hear this, just recently "acquired" the first 3 episodes and haven't watched them yet.  Not sure I'm a Trekkie, but I've seen all episodes of the original, all of TNG (like 10 times over) and most of the others...and all the movies new and old. So, don't bother with Discovery?

  6. I just had a turkey sandwich on toasted pumpernickel bread.  I'm down to only dark meat, but I still had some stuffing, gravy and cranberry sauce, so it all went in the sandwich.  I did add mayo to both sides of the bread to make it extra zesty.  On the side were the leftover peas and carrots.  I would have had potatoes, but I fried them up as hash browns yesterday with breakfast.

You want Willie fired because he'll likely shelter Bo just a little bit longer? Bo's game was garbage in the first half of last season after being thrust into more responsibility than he was ready for. He definitely turned it around (he's a real beaut) but he could use the kid gloves a bit longer. Let him earn the 2C spot; he'll overthrow Suttsy in due time.

Why doesn't Sutter have to earn it?  They have similar "bests" in points.  Myself, I would stop short of firing Willie, but I would have him on a short leash.  Bo should have every opportunity to be 2C...the exact same opportunity as Sutter...who has done nothing in my view to show he is a 2C himself.  From Willie's comments at the end of last season, Bo will be pigeonholed in a defensive role.

  8. I'm glad to have found this thread.

There isn't one clear best bassist in my opinion.

Anthony Jackson is right at the top with Carol Kaye and Joe Osborn just behind....and Flea.  Flea will be a legend in time...in time

I like Chris Wolstenholme and John Myung for contemporary bassists.

Well why didn't they?  That guitar solo on that Diane Sawyer song is terrible, but atleast he is a decent actor.

It doesn't take rocket appliances to know that.

  10. I just heard Sven on 1040 from the "jail cell".  I am so impressed with him, I really hope he builds on last season.  Reasonable expectations?  I say 18G 25A 43Points.  Could be more if he gets a regular 2nd line role.

I don't think Benning is looking for Kudos from "fans" like you. He is building a team to be better, he is not turning it into garbage no matter how much you and the other armchair GMs would like him to. Or are you suggesting that a player of Eriksson's quality could be signed for a lesser contract? If so, I would suggest that you are the one who is delusional.

"Fans" like me.  Nice.  You sure told me.  I'm a "fans" that have supported the team in every incarnation for the last 39 years.  Buying merch and tickets, and getting emotional about players, coaches and managers.  I'm fairly certain the team likes fans in general, you, me, joe, timberwolf and all the others who support the team.  I'm not going to pull punches and put on knee pads when I see moves that I don't agree with.  JB is a Canuck, he is not the Canucks....I love the Canucks.

I think Eriksson could have been signed for the same term and dollars without the last 2 years of a limited NTC.  I don't think that makes me delusional.  It was a steep price to try and win before the Sedin window closes.  It very well may work, I hope it does, and I will cheer my arse off for Eriksson regardless.  He's a great player.

Really? As a fan I feel that the only thing that really matters is how useful he is to the team. In various ways. Including his tradeability, which is affected by NMC/NTC, his cap hit and his actual salary.

Really?  As a fan I consider contract immovability, length and cap-hit as part of a player's usefulness.  I'm excited to see Eriksson play, I really like him, and I don't begrudge him for the contract, but to suggest it has any chance of being dealt, (sorry Joe but it doesn't) is bordering on delusional.  It was too long, with too many NMC/NTC.  Trading Eriksson in the last two years with a limited NTC and 6mil cap-hit for a 35yo plus player is not having any "outs", and JB deserves no Kudos for that contract. He can get his Kudos elsewhere.

  13. Poor Dorsett.  I crap on him extra hard because I love Bo, and I don't want him stuck on a line with Dorsett and Etem.  I feel like Willy is going to try and use Bo on the 4th line with those two...which would be a big mistake in my opinion.

I'm really trying to change my attitude on Dorsett though, I agree he is a great 4th line asset and we should appreciate what we have in him.

...now that wasn't hard at all.

    Willie on Bo Horvat:

“I thought a little bit I was playing to his weakness. Ah, I don’t know. It’s not his weakness, but the strength of his game is playing great defence,” Willie Desjardins said. “It’s not forcing the offence.

“It’s funny, because the past couple of games I put him on a more defensive line. I wanted him to be more of a shutdown guy.

“And he’s responded with great efforts.

“I see him as a real good checking centre.”

As you can see Bo will not be getting the luxury of offensive minutes and easy assignments. Quite the opposite and his job will be to take the heat off of what Willie does think is an offensive scoring center: Brandon Sutter.

We will know you are right if Bo plays on a line with Dorsett.  I see Bo as an upgrade on Sutter in every facet, I would prefer Bo on line 2 with Baer and Etem or Virt.  I can accept him with any line mate other than Dorsett.  Bo has a nose for the net and he uses his wingers.  Admittedly I don't have a large body of work on Sutter, I hope he kills it and we truly have line 2 and 2A.  Willie's comments lead me to think Timberwolf is right though, Bo will be used as a 3rd line grinder despite equaling Sutter's best point total after only 2 seasons.  Although I'm biased bout Bo...you know.
