Where would you like him to go? Trade? Nobody will touch that contract.

Waive to minors? Ridiculously disrespectful, short term and long term to future FA's.

No. You play him when you do, sit him otherwise and allow him a honourable exit. That's how franchises earn class. Hey, it ain't like we're gonna win the cup whether he's in the lineup or not, right?

He should go to the minors, he is just taking up a roster spot. Etem and Burr were just as useless in preseason.

  2. Gaunce has made it to the show. Lets see if he can prove some of the old haters wrong! I remember reading a guy named dangler on the gaunce prospect page. There were a few of those guys saying he would never be anything more then a 4th line C.

I thought Gaunce was a monster tonight. That worked hard, skated well and generated turnovers. That hit on Pouliot too

Yeah he played really well. I only said so-so because he had a couple bad turnovers in the first half of the game. I definitely prefer him to either Etem or Granlund

I'm as big a Gaunce fan as anyone, but him not making the team out of camp isn't a big deal. He may still do it, but more time to play top 6/first line minutes in Utica and help him polish his offensive game is a good thing. He'll have plenty of time, probably starting this year by the deadline, to play in the NHL, and last year showed that progression. What we don't want though is him feeling underconfident and just trying to hang in defensively.

I'm pulling for him, but there are lots of good outcomes for him after camp.

Agree to disagree I guess. I just think sending him down to Utica has a potential for his confidence to be completely ruined. He will feel snubbed, and might run the risk of him not improving on himself once he's playing for Utica. Could discourage him.

Making the NHL team will give him a huge boost of confidence, as it has to our other young players.

I don't agree with you at all. He'll be with the team on a sort of part time basis this year and will be in the opening night roster next year. Barring the unforeseen of course.

I don't agree with you at all. I see it as a huge disappointment if he is playing on a "part time basis".

Its almost becoming a headache. I have been a huge Gaunce fan since he was drafted and even I am getting worried. He needs to make a statement at camp. Only time will tell. If he fails, it will be a long season for him!

Yeah, I suppose it's more the numbers game of the current roster squeeze than anything else. Hard to fit Gaunce into the lineup without having to waive somebody else 25 or under who also has good upside.

So Gaunce has to really kill it IMO (and clearly out perform all the young waiver eligible forwards) for him to overcome his own waiver exemption.

But I can see him making the team regardless. I really like what he brings and I do believe he's NHL ready right now.

And I'd agree that a year on a "development" 4th line (if he would indeed be deployed that way) could be good for Gaunce.

Just not sure (yet) that it's the best choice, given all the factors.

I'm still not sure if Gaunce gains more (other than salary) this season by playing on Willie Desjardins' 4th line (even if it's a "development line") than he would in a core player and team leader role on Travis Green's 1st line (or 2nd) in Utica.

And even if the NHL role is a better one for Gaunce individually, I'm not sure the benefits outweigh the potential risks from a team perspective (especially as it relates to waiver risk and maintaining maximum player assets).

But I'm hoping Gaunce will show enough make the answers to these questions obvious to everyone by the end of preseason.

He's running out of time, thats for sure.

Drafted in 2012, 4 years after the fact and its time to make the team.

Either as a 4th liner or 13th forward.

If he is going to get better then he needs to get used to playing with the big boys.

If he doesn't make the team this year then he will have only one more year to avoid being called the b-word, bust.

The only thing holding Gaunce back is his being waiver exempt.   His skating is much improved and he's ready to make the jump.  We'll see him as the #1 call up for injuries and a permanent member of the team by trade deadline.

Why don't you think he will make the team out of camp? If he were truly ready than JB would make room for him.

  8. What are the expectations for Gaunce this year? It is interesting to look back in this thread, most people in the months and years after he was drafted thought he was a bonafide 3rd line center and would have made the roster by now. What happened?! I hope that his development is not totally ruined. He seems like a very smart player, just not quick enough at times to make a true difference in the game. When you can't back up your smarts with athleticism it doesn't look good.
