I thought he was awful ... a lot of people here starved for good RD don't even know what it looks like anymore. Propped up by Hughes he looked half ass passable but just terrible in his own end (Myers like at times) and very little to add offensively. He's a 7th/8th defender on a good team and as we saw in Carolina he sat for about 30 games straight. They didn't even bother playing him over a guy like Chatfield for 7 games to start the 22/23 season to see what they had. They already knew. Says it all right there.

One of Hughes better partners means absolutely nothing considering what he was competing with. He should get a show me 1 year contract at league minimum ... the last thing I want to do is sign this guy as a starter. It would be a big mistake. I think this team needs to set our aim higher than what Bear offers, which at this point is nothing. Plus he's hurt, our focus should be elsewhere if we're striving to make the playoffs.

The fact that Jalen Chatfield took his job, and he was only able to command a 5th round pick should be enough to calm people on thinking he's anything more than a depth defenseman who can skate.

With all the noise out there that the Canucks have a trade option with San Jose, they may be waiting to verify that they are going to be able to sign who they want in the UFA market before they take steps to free up the 6 million cap hit. If their target falls through, then it doesn't make sense to push to move him.

That, or waiting for San Jose to move EK to open the space for Myers.

Cap will still be $6M but you have to assume even at $3M prorated, he'll have some value as a RHD

    100%

A 6'7 RHD is going to have value, especially when you're getting him for peanuts. Myers would be a great bottom pairing guy playing a sheltered role, especially in a more competent system. It's when he's playing 18-22 minutes a night against tough matchups that he is a train wreck. Worse players get dealt at the deadline for some high value.

Out of curiosity, if they moved Myers at the deadline and retained half his salary at 50%, do you think that adds value to him, considering his cap hit is only 1 million?

For example, if a contender is right up against the cap and is still squeezing every penny they can, would the Canucks get a better or more assets in return, especially if there is a bidding war?

Are you talking about his prorated cap, or judging that based on his actual money paid? His cap hit annually is still 6mil.

Either way, as we saw this past year, there is always value in retaining salary. Adding Myers 6mil at the deadline, even when prorated, by retaining half, you're giving that team the option to effectively go and add an additional 3 million dollar player. Depth wins championships.

I wouldn’t go after Dumba. He won’t get any PP time, so he will have horrible offensive stats and not be worth the money. Then the collective fan base will be calling for his trade or buyout next summer.

    100%

We need to go after whoever gives us the most flexibility. Bargain shop for guys willing to take 1 year prove it deals.

Move Myers at the deadline if we're not contending for a playoff spot, retain 50% of his contract and recoup some decent assets.

Realistically with Seattle, Vegas, Edmonton, and LA way ahead of us, and in the same division, next year probably isn't going to end well for us.

It doesn't burn two years off buyout of you buyout OEL next year. It only take one year off cause the other year is the year you kept him.

Not sure keepingbhim 1 more year is gonna make much if a difference. He still ain't tradable unless he goes Eric Karlsson and even then it is 50% retained for like a 6th.

Keeping him the year, is one year. The extra buyout year is the second year.

Compared to our situation now, waiting until next summer effectively reduces his buyout by two years.

I didn't think he'd be tradeable either, I just don't see us contending next year regardless with LA, LV, and Edmonton, and Seattle ahead of us in our division, arguably Calgary as well. I would have rather sat it out another year.

Smith is a good PKer, so that does give him some added value over Garland there. This season Garland actually produced pretty decently on the PP considering he only got about 1:30 per game on it, nearly all of it being with the 2nd unit. I did a post not too far back where Garland was right there with Pettersson and Miller this season in points per 60 minutes while on the PP.

Garland lacks the vision, and the finish to be a constant productive option on the PP. We have too many players who are capable of playing above him. There is a reason he isn't staple to a PP unit.

It's fine in isolation until you realize that their blueline still needs to be fixed and he just spent cap that really needs to be spent on D.  It would have made more sense to wait until they had a GM with a working knowledge of the sport instead.

It's as if he's only been on the job for a couple weeks, and still has work to do.

    Wait..
