  1. Can this be confirmed? Since he didn't play in the game I'm pretty sure he hasn't lost the streak. I've been digging for information on the net and I kind find anywhere that says the streak is over.

It is over. I can't give you a link or anything, but it is (and was confirmed as such during the broadcast).

  2. I think a lot will come out after the season to explain what happened to this team after their great start. I agree that things went completely down the toilet once serious tinkering began with the lineup - no question there is a chemistry issue.

In the meantime I'll be cheering this team into the post-season - I just wish it didn't feel like they were walking into an inevitable early exit.

Regardless, I'll always remember my first Whitecaps game fondly - the season opener against the Impact.

  3. It says may, but it's irrelevant. Contract language is different from usual language. I can dredge up a post of someone (Wetcoaster, for those who remember an older poster on here) who has legal expertise who will support this.

Not going to get into it, but the wording would be "shall" if it were obligatory; using "contract language" of course.

  4. I guess you didn't make it.

Haha, well it was interesting to say the least.

Things went fairly smoothly except that the raft was partially pulled under the seabus when the crew failed to pull in the sea anchor. I've now seen parts of a seabus I never thought I would... like the underside of the hull.

They also did a man overboard drill which went smoothly. They basically strap a crew member to a harness and have them swing a hook at the person who fell overboard.

One thing I did note was that the lifejackets are actually surprisingly difficult to get out from under the seat. They are contained within a pouch that is sealed with velcro and then once you open the pouch there is actually another strap holding them in. It isn't rocket science to get them out and usable, but in an emergency I could see someone having a hard time.

  5. On Monday I'm going to be taking part in an emergency boat evacuation drill on the new Seabus. They're going to be testing the equipment and the procedures for abandoning ship. It should be interesting if very, very cold. From what I understand as long as everything goes smoothly they plan on putting the new boat into service about a week after the test.

  6. Unfortunately I don't have any pictures to post, but I toured the new seabus the other day. Things I recall:

    - It has a very nice interior but I'll be shocked if the seats survive the first week. The backs are all made of a single layer of fabric and are just asking to be vandalized.

    - There are now LCD tvs on the boat to show a video that accompanies the Transport Canada safety announcement

    - The boat features pretty heavy duty weathertight doors that are a significant upgrade from the old ones

    - "Exit This Side" signs are now proper LED displays

    - There is no centre aisle between rows of seats, but there is more leg room compared to the older boats

    - The Crew office is much larger than on the current boats and includes a kitchenette

    - One funny thing was that this room was supposed to have a one way mirror looking out at the passengers, but the yard didn't install one - it is a window instead

-The engine room is pretty small, but that is normal. The boat does not feature two stroke engines like the old vessels but has a more advanced model.

-The bridge does not have a rotating console like the old seabus'; instead it features two chairs back to back and two sets of controls.

-A lot on the bridge is automated, to the chagrin of operators since some of these systems do not have analogue back-ups; for example, if the computer system goes haywire there is no way to turn on or off the window wipers.

-In addition to regular navigation lights and flood lights the boat also has UV lights... to light up ice bergs I suppose?

I also understood that as far as future vessels go, they might be looking at a hybrid design for the engines for the next one when it is eventually built.

  7. frack YEAH!!!!!!!

I really wish I could see it come in.

I briefly watched the new Seabus come in while I ran from the BCIT Marine campus to Lonsdale Quay to catch a bus on Friday. One thing that struck me was how high it was sitting in the water when compared to the Otter and Beaver. I was wondering if this was just due to some test they were doing with ballast durig sea trials or if the boat really will have that much freeboard when in service. I've tried to get a look at it in its berth here in North Van, but it is difficult to tell how she is lying in the water given the viewing angles available. Regardless, I have been able to see crew working away on the bridge presumably getting familiar with the ship's systems.

  8. So, I've been using public transit for just over a week now... for the most part transit around Vancouver is as efficient as I remember it being, which is great.

However, what was up with the Seabus on Sunday? They only appeared to be running one boat and it was so crowded that they were actually leaving people behind! I don't remember it ever being like that before. Is it normal for them to only be operating the Beaver or the Otter one at a time during Sundays?

I rode the Canada Line out to Richmond Centre the weekend before last; the cars are pretty comfortable and seem more spacious than the older Skytrain cars. They need a better system at the Richmond end for pedestrians trying to get to the actual Richmond Centre mall though as the temporary crosswalk is an accident waiting to happen. Also, people still don't seem to get the fact that you are supposed to let people off the train first.

  9. Well, that shuttle train isn't even part of their subway. It's just a little terminal-to-terminal shuttle train.

The tunnel looked exactly like the cut-and-cover portions of Cambie.

Weird... I was in that airport almost exactly a year ago and cannot for the life of me remember a shuttle train.

That food poisoning I was suffering from (thank you Thailand) must have been really bad.

  10. I may be moving back to Vancouver in the fall and I plan on relying on public transit. I'd like to find somewhere that is within a half hour's transit of the Lonsdale Quay area that isn't too expensive rent-wise (relative to Vancouver's high rent regardless). Could anyone familiar with the transit routes give me some idea of what regions these criteria would include? Ideally I wouldn't have to make any transfers from one bus to another so if there are any major transit corridors I should be aware of I'd really appreciate being told about them.

Anybody? Last time I lived in Vancouver I was right downtown so I had no issues getting to just about anywhere. This time I'm going to likely be outside the downtown core. Is the Phibbs exchange the furthest you can get from Lonsdale without needing to switch buses?

  12. why would i change my name? I still don't think burrows has the skill to be a third ling winger. And what worse is all these fluke goals this ding dong is getting is probably going to get him a 2 million dollar contract. I'll admit he's playing better(and that kills me) but were only 3 games deep so he'll have to do allot more for him to make me eat my words.

I'm not sure how your opinion doesn't seem to have changed since this post. Let's forget for the moment that Burrows and Team Canada are being mentioned in the same breath by the likes of Steve Yzerman. Can you honestly still say that you don't think Burrows has the "skill" to play as a third line winger or even the NHL for that matter?
