When a countries biggest cities’ economies are all dependent on growth, housing starts, then it’s pretty much a Ponzi scheme. The Canadian economy is soon to collapse. Can’t have high interest rates with so much consumer debt in the for of mortgages.
    We are doomed.

When the housing market collapses I'll be there with open arms... until then I'll be making tax free $$$ in the middle east.

  2. I live in Calgary (at least for the next two months) and things are insane here too. Housing has been so hot the past couple of months.

I became debt-free (not including my mortgage) in September. Talk about great timing!

Anyway, I'm selling my house and most of my possessions and moving to Abu Dhabi for at least two years. I figure I'll ride things out there until Canada calms the hell down and then maybe I'll move back.

I wouldn't credit their GM for other GM's panicking to keep players. I thought what some teams were doing was just crazy. A half trained monkey could have gotten those deals. Then add in getting more players in the expenasion draft than a full roster, with added value from panicking GM's, plus a top draft pick as an expansion team. That adds up to some pretty decent moveable assets. Benning got an aging out declining team with a bunch of ntc's, no prospects on the farm, and one roster player under 27 worth keeping. I'd take the Vegas starting point any day, any year. At least GM's learned from the new expansion draft rules when Seattle joined. But even Seattle had a better starting point than Benning did.

This is revisionist history at it's finest.

    Agree to disagree, I guess.

It sure would be nice to build like Las Vegas. But I don't think GM's will let us just take a player from every team...

Ummm.. I'm pretty sure they didn't pick Stone or Eichel or Pietrangelo or Stephenson or Barbashev or .....

And before you say that they got Marchessault just remember that Florida basically begged Vegas to take him.

Vegas wasn't "gifted" anything. They picked wisely and took advantage of stupid GM's during the Expansion Draft. They then made aggressive trades and good signings and built a winner. They weren't afraid of making bold moves and moving on from contracts when needed.

It sure would be nice to have management/ownership that wasn't incompetent, unlike Vegas.

  5. I don't know that we will ever win a cup without first embracing a complete rebuild. We've lost a decade trying to retool, and we are a capped out team that has some real garbage contracts and a defense that isn't going to take us very far.

We should be learning lessons from Las Vegas, tbh. They've managed to acquire Stone, Eichel, Pietrangelo, etc. They're able to cut bait with players to get better players. They simply don't tolerate losing.

I will say that trading Bo was a step in the right direction. Now get rid of Miller, OEL, Boesser, and Garland and we have the start of a real rebuild.

When everyone pencils you to take Tkachuk at #5, you go Full Retard and take Juolevi. The people that defended this pick too, someone a few of years ago was saying how I was wrong Tkachuk is not a ppg player and Juolevi will turn out to be better.

The spin on these boards is, at times, enough to give a person vertigo.

"We don't want that gutless puke on our team - Benning drafts character"

"If we drafted Tkapuke that we we likely wouldn't have Pettersson or Hughes"

    etc, etc

Agree with this thinking. Too many people won't even give the NHL an opportunity to prove their honesty. Because they've already decided that they're dishonest, there's no way to convince them otherwise. It's perfectly reasonable to expect someone or a company to do what they can to show their honesty if they understand that others don't trust them--yet they still get criticized.

To say that they should've been more transparent from the beginning is retrospective and doesn't focus on the current issue--instead using past potential offenses to permanently indict the NHL without any chance at redemption.

Further to this... I don't understand why so many of these (likely) same people continue to watch hockey and complain? If everything is rigged then the NHL is basically the WWE and thus why would you bother getting so worked up about it?

Can appreciate the struggle he's been through the last couple of seasons. I think if there's a trade out there, we'll move him to gain cap space and improve in other areas. We have lots of guys who can score, and I do believe that he can get back to 30 goals per season or more, but we need the space too badly so that we can really address defense.

You can't "get back" to a place you ain't never been ;)

I love Boeser. I'd love for him to finally crack the 30 goal mark. I agree with other posters in that we should wait and hopefully sell high on him. I'd prefer to keep Boeser, but moving the money out just makes sense.

  9. Good morning, and Happy Pi Day to you all!

I created this topic to allow your inner poet and nerd to shine. Please submit your best Pi-Ku for the world to see.

A Pi-Ku is like a haiku, but the syllables are 3, 1, and then 4.

    For Example:

    Vancouver,            (3)

    You.                       (1)

    Always hurt me      (4)

    Or..

    Sometimes I

    Think

    I can do this

    Enjoy the day people!

  10. I don't post a lot on these boards anymore.. but here goes.

    I liked the Horvat trade.

I don't understand the Hronek trade. This team needs to rebuild and trading away 1st round picks in a deep draft ain't how that happens.

Hate, hate, HATE the Boeser, Mikheyev, and especially the Miller signings. This management group is as bad as Benning ever was.

    I give this management team a D-.

Put it this way, if you were in a coma for the last 2 years and just woke up, and someone told you only the moves made by the Nucks in the last 2 years, you'd have to assume that Benning was still at the helm.

Management/ownership has been absolute dogshit over the last decade. Our team is trash and, I got news for ya, they ain't getting any better any time soon.

I love my Nucks. I've been a fan since the 80's. But this ownership needs to go. Until it does, I'm about done supporting the team. As a fan, I vote with my dollar.. that's about all we can do.

    /end rant

He called being gay a "choice" (it's not) and his very public decision to actively not participate in a simple LGBTQ+ equality/tolerance/inclusivity (ie: nothing to do with religion) event, is in fact defacto support of the opposite. It's not neutral. It's actively making a point of being unsupportive.

I think it's hilarious people keep bringing up "attacking him for his religion". I've seen very few if anyone do so. I haven't ever even brought up religion once in this topic other than responding to people's posts about it. He's not being "attacked" (actually challenged) for his religion, he's being challenged for his bigoted views.

Suggesting being gay is a choice is certainly based in ignorance.

I don't really have a comment on the religion part.

As for the rest, we can be civil and respect that we see it differently. Also we agree that his stance is wrong.

It's, at best, condoning of intolerance. If you don't see that, that's a you problem. His actions were certainly not neutral.

The player did not participate in the pre-game skate. Nor did he speak out against the community. Seems pretty neutral to me.

For the record, I think the player should have participated. I don't agree with his stance at all.

But there's a difference between not supporting something and condoning the opposite stance. Again, there are more than two choices.

How about we agree to disagree on this?

  13. I'll reiterate what most on here are saying. You don't owe each other anything. Like you said, it's been a month and she hasn't messaged you either.

Time to cut ties and move on. You had something special but it's over. Trust me, you will find all that (and more) again.

Give yourself some time. DON'T REACH OUT TO HER.

Be good to yourself, you deserve it.

That bit she did about Jim Benning (before she was hired) sticking macaroni to cardboard while Joe Sakic was playing 5D Chess while she is quite obviously not smarter than either.. that bugged me.

I am a big new management fan.

We haven't had it this good since Pat Quinn's team.

I thought that bit was hilarious. Benning is/was a dolt that screwed this franchise over royally.

Where are you going this winter?

Honestly, I'm thinking about doing an all-inclusive somewhere hot this year. Never done one - when I travel I usually stay in hostels so this'll be pretty different!

I really think that you'll get what you were told. One of basic principals of investing is amplified in Mutual funds which is the diversification. Mutual Funds invest in stocks, bonds and other securities and are therefore highly diversified. Especially in turbulent times like these a solid and safe investment. Here's what I really like about your investment:

    1. diversification.

    2. mid- term / long - term perspective

    3. you add shares of MF to your account on a monthly basis

    4. you put your money to work

I am not sure about the performance of MF in the past. Did they show you at least a summary outlining the performance of MF in the past?

It's not an either/or situation. You should have as much in your TFSA as possible (up to the current max total contribution of $81.5k of course, assuming you are old enough to qualify for the 81.5k) and put it to work. Use a self-directed TFSA, and invest in equities/mutual funds if you are comfortable doing so.

The low risk ones won't net you massive returns but also won't net you massive losses.  I have a good portion of my money in MF (or whatever my Financial Advisor buys), they have averaged over the years 6-8% for my parents and me (30+ years for parents), so hasn't beat the S&P (which is usually what people compare to), but this year with S&P being down 23% YTD, my portfolio is only down about 5-8% with them so its a little give and take.  I pay higher fees with them and net some lower returns but at the same time they are pretty darn conservative and the drawdowns are much smaller.

Thanks for the replies. Yeah, every month I'm putting money into a TFSA and then from there I will direct some of it into other things like MF. Historically, the MF's have performed well over time, and the idea is that I'll be looking at a 10-15 year window before needing them so I should be good. It's hard being a new investor and seeing your MF drop 1.2% in 2 days, though!

  17. Is now a safe time to invest in Mutual Funds?

I'm a newbie investor. Just bought some MFs through my bank (I'm told they are medium-low risk) and will be making small purchases every month to add to it. I've been told that, long term, MF will always perform.. I just can't worry about the day to day fluctuations. I'm looking at this as a 5-10 year investment, maybe more.

It's not that I'm risk-averse, necessarily. It's more that I don't know what I'm doing but I'd rather get my money to work instead of sitting in a TSFA.

    Thoughts?

He is a defensive player that can score 20+ points. Handling the puck isn’t his strong suit, killing penalties and strong defensive play is. I think he is better on the wing though.

Whether he improves enough to make it work as a C or ends up back on the wing I don't really care myself. But to say he’s not a good player only highlighting his offensive skills is pretty laughable.

Not be super nit-picky but I believe Motte's career high is 16 points. Not to say that he can't score 20+ points if given the chance, but he hasn't done it yet.
