If the Canucks are to be buyers this year, I think they should consider a Gaudette + Stecher + 2nd rounder for a defenseman (which defenseman that may be, I’m not sure).

    1) In the short term, Gaudette can easily be replaced by Sutter at center.   In the long term, Madden can replace Gaudette at center (for example - when Sutter’s contract runs out, the Canucks can simply walk away from Sutter and call up Madden).   Things are obviously not guaranteed to pan out that way, but I think the odds are strong enough to take a calculated risk.

    2) Given our cap situation, the Canucks will likely have to walk away from Stecher anyways.

Our defense for the playoffs would be quite strong.

    Edler-NewGuy

    Hughes-Tanev

    Fantenberg-Myers

    Benn

So - who is the #NewGuy?   I’m not sure Ristolainen?  Do you have any suggestions?

If this “New Guy” on D is Ristolainen then it’s a good deal for us.  I wonder if the Sabres might actually like this deal too?  They get a young centre to help take some of the burden off Eichel.

That wouldn't be a terrible offer for Risto. Might have to add.

    Ristolainen is horrible though.

It is plain and simple because he just isn’t ready.

His skating is really nice.  But that isn’t enough to be an NHL defender.

He looked physically weak against his own peers.  Imagine when he is in the corner with someone 6’3 230lbs.

His positioning won’t work in the bigs either, not to mention he is a turnover machine from trying too much.

He he has a solid amount of time before he is a solid contributor on both sides of the puck.

We don’t need Goldy playing D

I dunno, I think Pettersson will be just fine when he makes the jump to the NHL.

Do you hope Hughes makes you eat humble pie next year?

Ya Very disappointed overall 4 me. Not bad , but not the "generational talent" level he has been made out to be imo .

I was expecting dominance like Pettersson in the SHL, not half decent. Sure hope he is better for the Canucks then he was at the world Juniors. Like i said , he was good , but not outstanding,  and outstanding is what we need . Wish i hadnt watched , cause i am super disappointed .

Who's making him out to be generational?  I didn't realise the term allowed for 2 (Hughes and Dahlin) generational talents in the same generation?

It would be Hughes no question. Think of the marketing for Francesco. Two highly anticipated brothers, a young Swedish phenom, Brock and Bo. Not to mention if we add a UFA like stone.

    Hughes - Petey - Brock

    Baertschi - Bo - Stone.

Quite the pipe dream. I would prefer Sven to be included in a package for a grittier lw, because our top 6 would be soft as butter.

I don't buy this.  They take the best player available; which will be Hughes regardless but not because of marketing.  Skill and winning hockey games sell more tickets than brothers.

He may not. but its not up to him, its up to the club. And clearly, the club's best interests are to have him wait till next season. And anyone who is going to argue that the extra 9-15 games are going to be a huge part of a defenseman's development, is engaging in sophistry, not cogent defense.

I don't know what either of these 2 words mean but I agree.

you have no idea if Hughes will be able to pull that off against the est players in the world.  I want to think he can, but at his size, it's not going to be easy

Disagree.  Cam Robinson says if he were to play on the Canucks today he'd be their best skating defense man.  That says a lot.

strong reason not to sign him at the end of this season then.  That is a huge difference.

My understanding is they can sign him, he just can't play >9games.  Same reason why McLellan benched Bouchard 4 games in a row.  Chiarelli, stupidly wanted Bouchard to play, McLellan refused to play him, protecting him from the expansion draft.

Edit: someone mentioned this might work differently for NCAA players?

In this one scenario, I am hoping JB doesn't land 1st oa so he doesn't have to make that choice. Give me one of Dach/Kakko/Cousins please.

How many guys have been plastered behind their net a-la Torres on Seabrook? None this year.

Blindside hits are all but gone, which is good.

Guys aren’t finishing their checks as much anymore.

How many big hits have we seen in Canucks games? 4-5? In 25 games

Not disagreeing overall but I can name one this season.  Brannstrom.

In fact if I remember correctly you're from Australia.  If you follow rugby league at all you'd understand my above point even better.  After every game, FB posts for the NRL are littered with hundreds of fans complaining about the officiating and saying the league favours specific teams (e.g. #penaltybroncos).

No offense but your belief the league has it out for a bottom 5 team tells me more about you than it does the league.  Like someone else pointed out no fan base is happy with the officiating in ANY sport and for as long as I've been watching it's pretty common knowledge the rules change at least slightly during the playoffs.

In reference to Honka,  I find it hard to base opinions on players just by watching highlights on the interweb :).  The tendency is to think they will are always going to look like they are in those Highlights.  Over estimating their ceiling and ending up being disappointed that they are not what you expected.

Fair enough but for those of us who aren't scouts it's the next best thing.  You can't scout based only off stat sheets.

Bouchard never said that, the interview is available to listen to and that "someone" is a troll.....and apparently of the worst kind implicating a kid of something like that.

Yes, he was talking about a player in the CHL this year....yes, he said it was a year ago with GM but he also said kid was still in CHL.   I listened to what Marek said as well - if you did, listen again.    No, not everything is in hindsight.

Finally, he game has not "turned around" - no sure what that even means.    OJ's game has been nicely progressing since he was drafted.   In his final CHL year he had a much lesser supporting cast, a team that scored less and a team that relied upon him much more.   He played bigger minutes, put up same offensive numbers (on a less offensive team) and was their virtual leader in all aspects of the game.   He was praised by management (Hunter) for being such a strong leader and was London's nominee for hardest working player in the OHL.

You repeating the crap without even remotely trying to sort out fact from fiction puts you in an interesting light.  What is your motivation for this?   Why are you implying this crap about Juolevi?

My motivation is that I care about the young mans life and hope he gets the help he needs.  Video game addiction isn't something that is generally taken seriously and if any light being shone on it can help someone seek help than that is a positive.  I've seen what addiction can do first hand.  If this puts me in an "interesting light", and you assuming I'd have any other reason to take interest in it, puts you in a good light then so be it.

  14. 9 hours ago, tas said:

did marek specifically say that his conversation with this gm happened after the kid had been drafted? if not, it could certainly be someone from the 2017 draft.

Marek said it happened a year ago.  Meaning the 2017 draft hadn't occurred and that puts Juolevi on the knights.  So that leaves the 2015 or 2016 drafts.

This is not an odd comment, 99% of all junior players, and most players in pro leagues need to get in better shape in order to play in the best league in the world.

Maybe but how do old guys like Salo or Benning describe a problem (video game addiction) that they don't understand.  If you're showing up to practice/games on 2-4 hours sleep I think that shows as poor conditioning even if it's just being tired.

    Three flaws with this.

    1.   Evan Bouchard never said that.    I follow London and know some of the Knight management.   I listened to that entire interview.   Someone is trolling Canuck fans with that for reasons I can only guess at.

    2.  It was BS for this to get leaked but it specifically referred to a player in CHL this season - THIS season - that excludes anyone in AHL, Finland, Sweden etc.

    3.  OJ was playing professional hockey this year.   Unlike junior hockey, pro teams can have a say in a lot of things about conduct, curfew etc. and not a hope with a roommate, travel, doctor evaluations etc. that any pro player could "get away" with such a thing in today's game.....particularly in Europe to be honest where you are together far more as a team than in North America in my experience.

I hope that the kid that this is about gets things sorted but it was crap to release that information and it is even worse crap to speculate about kids it clearly cannot be.   Some people are pretty freakin' pathetic.

    1. I apologise if Evan Bouchard never said that.  I can't find the radio interview/source so take it with a grain of salt.  What I'm going off of is someone has posted a transcription of a radio interview with Bouchard where they claim he said

"I think he did uh, he did play video games, he'd go home a lot just to play video games so I don't know, he didn't go out too-too much but uh he was always at home playing games"

    2.  No it wasn't referring to a player in the CHL THIS season.  Marek specifically says he was talking to a CHL GM a year ago and that the league had to get this player help that it got so bad.  Everything he says is in hindsight from a year ago.

    3. Great, maybe that explains why his game turned around.

Typical inferiority-complexed Canucks fans, always thinking the worst.  The report said a JUNIOR player.

It was Jeff Marek and he specifically said it was when he talked to a CHL GM a year ago.

Marek also says the player was a 1st round draft pick; then further narrows it down to a high pick.

A player from a VERY prominent NHL team.

    CHL player.

Juolevi played in the CHL a year ago.  Because it was a year ago it eliminates 2017 draft.  Initial players coming to mind were Alex Nylander but he's never played in the CHL or wasn't at that time.  Ho-Sang; however, I'm not sure the Islanders are a VERY prominent NHL team.

Add in a lot of odd comments from coaches - Salo saying his conditioning needs to be better if he's ever going to play in the NHL.  Very poor showing at development camp.  Evan Bouchard stating that Juolevi loves to play video games then back tracking a bit.

When you're up all night playing video games and only getting 2 hours of sleep it could explain a lot of what is going on with Juolevi.  There are small things like you're a LOT more likely to get sick/flu.  It could also explain why he was often used so little this year.

I know a lot of people are going to disagree but if you look at who it could be from the 2016 and 2015 draft you end up by process of elimination with only a couple guys.  Juolevi is one of them.  And remember these were comments from a year ago so we can't entirely use his improved play this year to disqualify him.

  16. 8 hours ago, nzan said:

Which is exactly the point - nobody yet has been able to properly explain how a collection of ok/decent players all came together to play way better than almost any of them have played previously. Outside of Neal and Fleury it's very much seven oaks looking and feeling like robson st.

I think Vegas is the classic example of several "career years" happening at same time, a whack of players on short-term (lots of one year) deals playing to show they belong in league and a bit of "I'll show them" to the teams that exposed them.   Added to that insanely good coaching and out of the gate depth at every position (they got NHL players top to bottom - even the top teams like Bolts and Bruins get pretty thin by players 18 to 23).

I don't think you need any further explanation beyond the above.

The only thing I'd add is that Vegas targeted fast players.  Also, they scouted extremely well.  They were able to identify players the same way JB and staff were able to identify Pettersson, Gaudette, Lind, Boeser etc.  A guy like Karlsson was probably too far down the depth chart to really show what he was capable of and/or he is just having a break out year.

I remember people like you also thought Boeser would need a few years in the AHL.

And was it people like you who thought Virtanen was ready for the NHL?

It is easy to cherry pick one player, Boeser or Virtanen, but it's hard for any of us to predict when a player is ready.  None of the experts had Boeser putting up the numbers he did in his first full year.

Boston and Toronto are the only teams in the playoffs with 3 thirty goal scorers...so count again on the Jets' totals...

If EP comes in and gets 30 goals then he will also get about 40 assists and that will give us 3 seventy point players, one 45 goal scorer and quite possibly 3 thirty goal scorers...Bo will score 30 one year at least...book that...!

That makes us a playoff team next year...which is my prediction...we were a playoff team in Dec. last year and we won games like a playoff team to end this year...buy your tickets now...

I have to agree with Khay on this one.  Our d and goaltending are too weak for us to be a playoff team next year.

    9 hours ago, cory40 said:

I am agreeing 100 % with you about the team we could have next year. I might be the only person who feels the Sedins retiring make us a better team. My reasons

They are so married to each other that 50 points each is usually only 50 goals give or take a few. Where two other players get 35 points each and that could and should translate to 50 goals also. Now take all the loses they cost us being out in OT. If we do have two players come in and get 35 points each we will still get 220 goals as a team only because two other players won't be so bent on passing to the same player.

Now OJ is coming in at 20 years old and already starting to play big minutes. Not a stud defenseman yet but an upgrade over existing defensemen.

Petterson will come in and earn ice time as the season hits 20 ish games and will do well

    Dhalin will be an addition

Jake showed awesome growth last few weeks

Goldobin starting to find his pro game

We don't have enough room for the players we have, But I am betting we have some awesome decisions to be made next October. And we may have a few players at the draft that could step in depending how high we draft. Its Gary Bettmans NHL so I say 9th.

Strongly disagree.  The Sedins retiring makes us a worse team.  But that's okay, we need some more high end talent at the draft next year.

I think you're in for a big surprise if you think they'll be competing for a WC spot next year.  I think it entirely depends on if the Sedins re-sign.

I'm expecting the Canucks to be a bottom 5 team for at least 1 if not 2 more years (of course that changes if we get Dahlin).  I'm okay with that though, the next 2 drafts are suppose to be very strong.

overall they went 4 for 10 I’d say, although the 2011 draft was pretty weak so I don’t know if you can really hold RNH against them.

Pretty hard in a draft with the first overall and a shot at McDavid.  It's not the first overalls that Edmonton struggles with but drafting in all of the other rounds.  Includes the rest of the rounds and that list looks much different.

Only problem is trading down is easier said than done. Watching the footage from last draft, you can see Benning tried to trade down but couldn’t find a trade partner, so he took pettersson ahead of where he was projected.

If were picking 2 or 3 and can’t find a trade partner, it’s still not crazy to think JB will take one of those top rated Defensemen over Zadina/svech, even if this forwards are the BPA’s

    Exactly.

I think this will be the approach again this year. If someone offers a player to move down a couple spots and they can still pick a player that fits, Bouchard maybe, they will do it or pick Bouchard higher than expected. If that is the player he wants.

Elliotte Friedman had the head of hockey operations for Columbus on his podcast a couple weeks back; unfortunately his name escapes my mind at the moment.  He stated that it's pretty well known among GMs now that it's not worth trading to move up in the draft.  I think he was specifically referring to the top picks in the first round.  So while it's a great idea, I can't see it happening.
