Bad advice for people who just want to lose weight. The trick to a diet is to make the changes as subtle and easy to maintain as possible.

Portion control, cutting back on high calorie condiments and sauces, choosing better options when eating out, etc... Are all better options than counting every calorie and following an ultra strict diet.

I don't follow an ultra strict diet, I use counting calories as a tool to enable all the things you mentioned, and do them more accurately.  I know which condiments are high in calories and which ones are better, I know which restaurants are lower in calories, I know how big to make my portions.  Counting calories doesn't mean you have to eat broccoli and chicken breast exclusively, it just means you have better information to play with.  And if you crack once and go to McDonalds once, it's easier to figure out how to get back on track rather than writing off the entire day.  Tracking my progress closely helps keep me motivated because it establishes a direct link between my work and results.

I hate working out but I want to shed some pounds.  Started at around 230lbs. now I am down to 208 but have been stuck for around 3 weeks.  It's true when they say the first 10lbs are easy lol.  Not looking to pump up, just want my six pack back like I had in my 20's.  I started eating cereal for breakfast which is helping immensely, and now my weekends are my cheat days for dieting.  Looking at those body builder pics think I rather be obese then to look like that, probably more healthy too.

3 weeks is a very long time to go without seeing results weight loss wise.  Perhaps cuttind down to 1 cheat day per week would be a good idea.  Counting calories is also essential (at least for me on a cut) it removes the guesswork and allows me to be somewhat more flexible as if I get invited out to dinner or something I know exactly how much to adjust for it later on.

Those measurements are never accurate. Not a chance he was that low, unless he was juicing. At those kind of levels you get seriously negative affects to your ability to perform sports. You would also be visibly a lot more ripped than E. Kane looks.

It should however, be taken into account that the professional sports off-season drug testing is a sham. So it's possible he rolled into a camp coming off a cycle at a very low BF percentage. There is no way, however, that he competed in the NHL for the entire year at 5% body fat and was natural. Looking at current pictures, you can see in his face, that he is nowhere near 5%. At those levels, you begin to see veins visibly sticking out of the neck and going into the jaw.

Same with Seguin, claimed he was 3%. Probably wasn't lying, just got an inaccurate reading.  3% would be freakish.

I've also used whey/casein powder & creatine in the past, but now focus on whole foods. The cost just didn't seem to justify the gains, as I got just as much or more gains eating tons of food, & I've never touched pre-workouts. Coffee works just fine.

There's fine line though for muscle that women find attractive, a "bliss point" if you will. Too much muscle, i.e.. looking like you're on steroids, isn't all that attractive to a lot of women. I've heard from natural guys also that they've noticed a drop in ladies attention after they got to a certain size... if you look like you go to the gym, that's perfect, but if you look like you live in the gym it's a bit of a turn-off.

My experience was that the bigger I got, the less attention I got overall, but the attention I did get was from hotter women.  Women get intimidated too.

But regardless, if your goal is to get as big as you want regardless of what anyone thinks, that's okay, you can do that.  If you want to lift for the girls, that's OK too.

Having said that I don't think the average natural lifter is in any danger of looking too freakishly big, especially if they stay lean.

  5. I would guess that Costco knows full well that people will exploit their lenient return policy, and chooses to keep it that way anyways in order to keep other members happy and attract potential customers (which they believe will ultimately benefit them long term). You really think such a large, successful corporation wouldn't take this into account? They probably have mathematical models and everything.

Not saying that guy should do it, just that there are thousands just like him/her and Costco knows it.

  6. Part of the personal responsibility in working out is to monitor your own pace/form. To not delve into a high intensity program without having learned the basics and, through that, taking care of yourself.

To know how to gauge your heart rate and to listen to your body. Form is square one and if you haven't mastered the basics in that, you're jumping in to programs that aren't likely designed for you.

I know nothing of this one...but that's just a general rule of thumb. There is a reason you have to sign waivers and there are disclaimers...because, really, it's up to you to monitor what you can/can't should/shouldn't do. Everyone is at a different level and has different restrictions....it's up to you to determine and work within that.

(Now I'll actually go have a look see what this program's about)

Actually if you're paying for a personal trainer, group led classes, or any type of instructor I would put the responsibility on them to educate you on proper form. The whole reason people seek fitness training is because they know nothing and are seeking expert guidance. So now it's up to the company to make sure their trainers possess the proper knowledge to help customers. Also, for some people, part of the attraction of crossfit is the competitive, "group motivation" factor. This can be dangerous if the group pushes a person to do what they can't handle. Working out isn't a competition to see who can do the most pullups or the most snatches in a minute.

I don't wanna make it sound like I'm hating on all crossfit boxes, I'm sure there are plenty that are very good. Crossfit boxes are independently owned, without proper quality control that opens up the potential for bad apples.

  7. Has anyone done Crossfit and was it worth it?

I wouldn't do it. It obviously depends on your box, but I get the impression that cross fit encourages simply going as hard and fast as you can for a certain period of time with less regard to proper form and safety. A lot of doctors have spoken out against it. It is good in the sense that unlike most fitnwss trends it actually encourages hard work rather than a quick fix. By joining cross fit, you will get in shape. However, there are other, better ways to get in shape that are less taxing on your body and finances.

Granted, everything I know about cross fit is bases on news articles and stereotypes. Just proceed with caution.

  8. I actually used myfitnesspal religiously for a few months last year when I was doing a cut to try and get to 9% BF down from 12%. I really liked it, but I found I was adding a lot of foods by myself, and without a scale I'm pretty sure my portioning wasn't accurate in my entries.

Yeah it's not perfect, but it's better than being in the dark completely for me. I found it helped me to divide things up into portions as soon as I got back from the grocery store, that way you can use the exact weight on the packaging and divide it by how many portions you have. On a day to day basis this method isn't exact (on Monday and Tuesday you might log 100 g of chicken per day even though you ate 120 and 80) but over a week or so it averages out to the same which is the end goal anyway.

I went through a lot of sandwich bags and my roommates thought I was weird but I'm swole so I don't care ;)

  9. That's good. I'm sort of wondering how Johnny Hockey is 99 is doing, if he's there anymore. Did you feel anything in Osaka?

You realize Osaka is in Japan, right? That's almost 5,000 kms away from Nepal. I know earthquakes can be felt far away, but that's like asking someone in Cuba if they felt the recent earthquake off our own BC coast.

Japan has enough earthquakes of its own.

  10. Agreed. It's not really a physical thing I'm worried about it's more psychological. My problem is one slip up leads to another, and then it becomes oh well I'll just treat myself for a few days here and then get back to the regular, clean diet next week.

    That's a crazy diet (Phelps)

I use myfitnesspal to track all my calories when cutting, I find it gives me peace of mind and allows me to make adjustment on the fly. That way if I eat a McDouble for example, instead of writing off the whole day, I can just eat a little less for the rest of the day, and I can still end up withing my planned amount of calories. Obviously you don't wanna do this too often, as you just end up eating junk food for half the day and starving yourself the rest. But once in a while it's fine for a cheat meal/cheat day. Also it's more motivating this way, as just using guesswork to lose weight is like playing a sport without knowing the score to me.

  11. Doesn't really matter what you eat, as long as you are getting the proper amount of calories and protein. I'd avoid simple sugars (except immediately after a workout), which can cause your insulin to spike and then drop off dramatically. Other than that, there's no magic or evil foods.

Eat almonds, eat pieces of bread, eat cheese, etc.. just make sure you aren't getting too many/few calories. There's nothing especially bad about carbs. They just happen to be the easiest thing to cut out of your diet, while still maintaining a high protein intake. So if your goal is to cut and you're used to eating chicken with carbs, you definitely don't want to cut the chicken. This is why low carb diets work, not because carbs are especially bad for you.

That being said, though, is eating nutritious food not better for your general health? You can lose weight eating McDonalds every day, but you probably won't be getting the nutrients you need.

  12. I was wondering what's the best way to start weight training? my goal from jan to go from 226 to 170-175 and I've done that, but now I wanna start gaining muscle! also was wondering does lifting weights make you gain weight?

You will only gain weight if you eat enough food. Weight lifting does not make you gain weight by itself, you have to make sure you eat more calories than you take in.

You might be able to get away with a weak diet at when you first start though, due to noob gains.

  13. Gonna bump this one as I just moved back to Vancouver and I'm looking for a gym to join A$AP before I lose all my GAINZZZZZZZZ.

I live in Coquitlam, work in Richmond, so I'm looking for something close to home or work (preferably home). I don't care about state-of-the art machines or saunas or steam rooms, but I absolutely demand a good selection free weights (with enough benches, squat racks, floor space for deadlifts etc.) along with a reasonable price.

  14. Interstellar 8.5/10: A lot of my friends were saying it was one of the best movies they've ever seen. Overall it was excellent to watch, they clearly pulled a lot of elements of 2001: A Space Odyssey. Visually it was excellent and the plot was dramatic. The score was absolutely brilliant as well. However there were too many obvious flaws for me to consider it one of the greatest. I still gave it a good score though because it's definitely worth watching.

  15. I don't think Linden having lunch with Iggy (if true) is a big deal... If, as expected there is interest by Vancouver, he is simply having the discussion every team interested in him will have. Rather than just talking to his agent, given the proximity and relationship (played against each other NHLPA, team Canada), Linden is being smart by reaching out in person. A lunch is simply a lunch and a pitch, really means little until we know who else is bidding and what Linden pitched, what Iggy wants etc. Part of the 'process' lol, nothing more

Iginla and Linden likely go way back so perhaps they are just hanging out. Or maybe Trevor wants the D ;)

  16. As far as management goes, the Canucks have made all the right moves. The hirings of Linden, and Benning, and Desjardins all appear to be smart decisions. They may not be the most experienced, but all the 3 of them are intelligent, hardworking men who have proven themselves at the lower levels. They are already well on their way to turning around the disaster that was last season, and if they can find the right players, it won't be long before this team is once again ready to win championships.

  17. Definitely a troll thread, just looking at OP's more recent posts. Either that or it's a very clever parody of people like OP.

Brb, taking my Kwantlen BA in English Literature to Goldman Sachs and demanding 200K a year, I'm sure they will give it to me just because I ask for it. I mean, I'm the only person in the world who desires to make lots of money and have a hip lifestyle.

  18. I will speak from the Engineering side of things. Realistically, we typically average around 60K/year for starting salaries in Vancouver. Victoria is much less at around 50-55K/Year. It also depends on where you work and what size of company you are getting yourself into. Getting 100K/year after 3 years may not be exactly achievable by everyone, but if you are smart and work your ass off, anything is possible. Good luck in your search for a job, but to be expecting a big salary fresh out of school, set your expectations low!

Keep in mind this is for an Engineering degree, which is probably the most valuable Bachelor's you can get, and much more valuable than a marketing degree. Very few people make $100,000 straight out of college, unless they start a business, go to an Ivy League school, have great connections, etc. It's great that your ambitious and want to make lots of money, but part of that means being willing to work your way up.

Before you go in demanding a high salary, you have to prove that you're exceptional. There are tons of communications majors out there from school like SFU, I'm sure you're good but if want to make salary demands you have to show that you are a genius. Otherwise, they're not gonna think you're "assertive" or "high value", they're just gonna pick someone else.

  19. I can see where Torts is coming from, and he's entitled to his opinion. I would give Burrows another chance due to injuries, but he does have a bad contract, and I would expect Tortorella to have got a bad first impression considering this is the first he's seen Burrows play.

However, some of the other stuff is pretty suspect. The Weise thing is pretty ridiculous and not talking to our farm team's coach is absolutely nuts. You'd think it would be important to stay in touch with the guy who's charge of developing your young players. I was on the fence about the firing before but these reports (if true) make me glad he's gone. Obviously there was a lot of behind-the-scenes stuff that must have factored into Trevor's decision.

  20. Typical Bruins. Gotta love Lucic complaining about Weise making it public, as if he expects Weise to do him any favours after what he did.

I can understand that trash talk happens in the heat of the moment during game action, but everyone knows that by the time the handshake line rolls around it's expected that you put the last series behind you and show some sportsmanship.

  21. let's paraphrase what he said - he dislikes minorities and he doesn't want her to have blacks on her instagram and he does not want her to bring blacks to games

Is this guy not allowed to have his own opinion? He did not explicitly say anything negative or offensive about blacks. He obviously doesn't like them, but he never said anything that should gather this type of reaction. You can look up 'black jokes' on google and any of them are more offensive than what he said. Notice how it is all white people that are offended? All of us minorities have experienced this, we have all dealt with this and what he said is nothing compared to what we deal with on a regular basis.

If it's only white people that are offended, why did his own players wear their jerseys inside out in protest? Why did the president of the US condemn the remarks? Why did the majority of NBA players (who are mostly black) support the ban? Who wants to work for a boss who thinks you are an inferior human being purely because of your skin?

The "black jokes" on the internet are just that, jokes. When Donald Sterling discriminates against black and latino renters, and non-Korean renters, it's not a joke. IMO they should have banned him after that whole incident incident (which you conveniently seem to be ignoring) instead of waiting until now. They also should have made it clear that the ban was about his overall racist character, not just a few comments.
