There are two games here but the second one is Michigan against Northeastern and Gaudette.

40:50 shows Quinns edge work while defending against Gaudette.

This brings a smile to my face to watch. The guy is electric out there. After seeing him with Cecconi I could see him pairing quite well with a big stay at home D-man who can make a good hard d to d pass. A guy like Gudbranson could flourish beside Hughes. I just hope he would be smart enough to leave the ego at the door and pass the puck to Hughes. Pairings I would be excited to see next year are:

    Edler - Stecher

    Juolevi - Tanev

    Hughes - Gudbranson

    Pouliot/Hutton/Del Zotto - Biega

  2. I think OJ is going to be a 25 minute per night D-man that plays against the league's tops players, complements an offensive defenceman, is a set up guy on the PP, and who is on the ice for more goals for than goals against.

OJ is the type of guy that will get better and better with each passing year.

Is this the same Craig Button, who (while GM and Pesident of the Calgary Flames) released a young Martin St. Louis, because he (Button) thought St. Louis was not an NHL player?  That Craig Button???

Have you never made a mistake Alf? Cause we still trust you not to eat the cat

What do you consider a playmaker? Glass had 32 goals and 62 assists this past season for 94 points in the WHL, a very defensive league. He has a good work rate, vision, and size (6'2"), not to mention the fact that he'll most certainly grow and round out to 6'3"/6'4" as he nears 21 years old. To top it off, a big chunk of Skyler McKenzie's 42 goals (the second highest point-producer on the Winterhawks) were assisted by Glass. Essentially, 17 year-old Cody carried that team for large stretches of the season.

After watching him play, I liken his play style (I stress on style as I'm not projecting!) to Joe Thornton. He prefers to dish out the puck but he also pitches in with goals. Very lean and slender player who has decent speed (although not great) but compensates with vision.

    This post is real good

If Tanev is not returning a U23 guy or a top 10 pick, then it's not a rebuilding move is it?

I'm not sure what the fascination is with defining what a rebuilding move is.

From my perspective; if you trade Tanev, a top d-man, for a prospect and a 1st, then yes, that is a "rebuilding move".

Maybe if you trade Tanev for Kane, that would be considered a "retooling move".

All that aside, who knows if Tanev even moves. If he does move, who knows what player we even pick. All I know is that it's a semi beautiful day and I am jumping on the Goose for a ride to Sooke. Cheers, Alfie.

How about we trade Tanev for 3 overall, and draft Makar and Glass?  Then we get a potential elite Dman and future number one centre?

I don't think we need 3rd overall to find a top 5 talent. I think certain players will slip to the mid first due to various issues such as:

    • Kostin - Injury
    • Pettersson - Toughness
    • Yamamoto - Size

If we trade Tanev. I prefer we trade him for one of the three previous players, plus an additional solid prospect. Vs make a big trade with him for a top three pick.

I especially don't think we need to trade a Tanev for a Makar because imo we have Subban and Stecher who will step up next year and become the PP puck moving defensemen that are so coveted by management.

I saw him play against Moose Jaw one night and he was downright lazy. When he has the puck he’s fine..but when he doesn’t...

Honestly, this is my concern too. I watched 3 hours of shift by shift game tape of this guy and I see the same thing. A wicked shot from the top of the left circle. But when he doesn't have the puck, he does alot of floating around, he is super slow. That added onto the injury problems. In some of the interviews I have watched he just doesn't seem to be having fun and is taking things for granted. Seems entitled and lazy flowing off last seasons high and his family pedigree. I pass on Patrick.

I would take the best player available and if that happens to be a centerman in the first round who might have a chance at becoming a 1st line player then we should go that route.  We have Bo, Gaudette, Sutter, etc already that could fill in the 2nd line, 3rd line center role.  We desperately need a 1st line center moving forward to help the rebuild.  I have a feeling Petterson could turn out to be a really good one in about 3 years.  He reminds me of Zetterburg.

I really like Pettersson too. That is why i am so torn, because i really like Liljegren too. I think his down year is an anomaly due to illness and a slight depression which followed being sick and bouncing around.

I still think we take the center. We have found ways to pull great dmen out from other areas than the tip of the draft. We haven't been able to pull out high end forwards as well as of late. Boeser projects well but still not a guarantee. Time to take a high end forward. There is always gems for dmen hanging in the middle of the first round when we are making our way back up from the bottom in a couple of years.

For me its high end forwards this year and next with our firsts. Go defense in the 2nd rounds or ncaa free agents.

I find ncaa undrafted forwards get over hyped and dont translate as well to nhl as the defensemen do coming out of university.

Those are really good points too. I like the dman Benning has snagged late like Tryamkin, Brisebois, and Neill.

I think Liljegren would be a great partner for Juolevi though. I think they would be unreal together. That's why I'm so torn between a centre or Liljegren...

  9. I think we would get good value in the draft if we take the top dman with our first round pick. Then with our second rounder take a centre like:

    Joshua Norris

    Aleksi Heponiemi

    Robert Thomas

I know the top centres have very high ceilings but so does the top dman. I think these centres could become efficient 2nd line playmakers with proper development. Is that a good idea our should be take top centre with our first rounder?

    He's also right handed..

I'm excited to see how well he does in the playoffs! I think he fills a need of ours long term and could be a beast partner for Juolevi to grow with.

Was dominating the USHL and was leading it in points, then decided to go back to high school hockey because he had unfinished business, heartbreakingly loses his championships, returns to the USHL, and picks up where he left off.

Guy's a gamer. I really hope we draft this guy. His attitude is just like Horvat's. Team first type player, captain material. JB has to be all over this guy. There was a leaked script which showed JB's rankings of the players and he had Mittlestadt at 5th if I can recall. I like him better than Hischier and maybe Patrick.

Could you post that leaked list by any chance?

    Mittlestadt/Boeser combo would be dirty.

My only fear with Middlestadt is that he would stay in university and become a FA and sign with Minnesota. To me, he has already shown that he is a homer by returning to play in highschool. Im afraid that his priority would be to stay in minnesota long-term. Is that a crazy assumption?

I don't think he'll make it to the 3rd round.

That Is precisely what would make it such a great pick! I think he would be the perfect long term D partner for Juolevi though and a pick like this excites me. I'm even okay if we do not draft Liljegren and instead we take Pettersson or Glass or Hischier such that our D looks like:

    Tryamkin - Stecher

    Juolevi - Rasanen

    Brisebois - Neill

    Hutton - Gudbranson

  13. Eemeli Rasanen with our 3rd rounder, could be a great pick. Guy is a Finnish RHD, 6´7´´ and 210lb. He Is putting up points in the OHL. Wears #77 and has a wicked hard shot. I can imagine our D lines now:

    Tryamkin - Liljegren

    Juolevi - Rasanen

    Brisebois - Stecher

    Hutton - Gudbranson?

I like it. Kid looks lanky and uncoordinated right now but has good smarts. As he gets stronger and faster he should continue to develop. Plus I hear he Is tough and plays the body. Could be a good shut down Dman who can complement Juolevi with a hard shot and physicality.
