avelanch
i have always said a team in vegas could work, especially since the arena would probably house a casino attached to it, and probably a hotel as well (most likely sports/hockey themed)
Baggins
God I really hope this doesn't happen. That team would have no genuine fan base, it would be nearly all suits and tourists filling the arena. There are much more deserving cities.
Baggins
Phoenix, part 2, no fan base, no revenue, unless propped up by the empty casinos. But, Gary Bettman is still in charge, last time I checked, so it must be on the next agenda.
Baggins
I doubt a team in Vegas would need to worry much about ownership. Caesars Palace is owned by the Harah's group. They have: Caesars Palace Paris Flamingo Rio Harrah's Balley's Imperial Palace Planet Hollywood Bills And that's just in Vegas.
Seycove Seyhawk
I think that if it's behind the Imperial Palace, then that's a really good spot for it. I was down there in June and it looked like renovations were happening at Imperial Palace or it was getting ready for it to be torn down. The arena will be beside a nice updated or new hotel. Also, that is pretty much right across the street from the Bellagio, Mirage and Caesar's Palace and close enough in proximity to Treasure Island, Paris, Harrah's and the Venetian. It is a nice central location on the strip that would surely gather a lot of tourist attendance. The only challenge I see is garnering a following from the locals. cIutch
Canadians are what's been keeping Vegas afloat the last few years. Although a Vegas team may not have a great number of local fans, I can certainly see that arena filled with genuine Canadian hockey fans. It doesn't matter why an arena is full as long as it is. I go to Vegas 3 times a year. Twice during the regular season and once during the playoffs. It would save renting a car and making the run to LaLa land to catch a game. I'd love to see an NHL team in Vegas. Likely be an automatic #2 on my favorite teams list.
SOB for MVP
As much as it would be a good city to go to financially, the fan base does not appeal to me. As Jager said, the fanbase would be just tourists and executive suits. I personally want to see Kansas City get a team
afesposit
I'm in Vegas all the time for work... Vegas is poor as dirt, if you leave the strip... Nobody has any money, and everyone works in hospitality or something similar... They aren't buying hockey tickets in that town. And in no way will they be able to have hotels purchase enough tickets to make the team profitable... No way... This would be a joke... As for the NBA.... NBA all star weekend brought so much thuggery, that even vegas didn't want it back..
taiwanchik
One thing Las Vegas does well is marketing. I have no doubt that if the NHL did go to Las Vegas, there will be no problems filling the arena, even if some of the "fans" are casino comps and tourists. Las Vegas is a major destination for travelers from around the world and this could very well be an opportunity to introduce them to NHL style entertainment. As for people still wanting Hamilton to get a franchise, there's still the problem of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Buffalo Sabres who will get in the way. Not only that, who would be it's owner? Balsillie? He's done with. RIM Blackberry has suffered great financial lost recently and his net worth is no where what it used to be. The only rich owner from the area who could is Michael Lee-Chin but he never he once talked about getting into the game.
