Ending the Skid against Sid
I think the Canucks should lobby harder for a more-balanced schedule. We need more of these good East conference teams coming into Vancouver at the end of their road trips and stinking out the joint. Obviously the Crosby's, Malkin's and Ovechkin's of the league also need to make several trips out here before they do anything impressive in front of the Canuck faithful.
Who would've thought a visit from the defending Stanley Cup champions would be just what the doctor ordered to end the Canucks' losing skid?
While it's hard to put too much stock in the Canucks feasting on two minor league goalies, it's just these type of situations that they fail to capitalize on when they're struggling (though it's usually against a backup goalie and not a junior goalie).
Ironic, but not surprising that it should be a short-handed goal from Burrows that became the pivotal moment of this game -- a game that could turn out to be somewhat pivotal, with the Canucks looking poised to go on a losing streak. Wasn't it a shorthanded goal from Burrows in a game last year that turned out to be the turning point -- when the Canucks went from a losing streak to a winning streak?
I was thinking of doing a "Ref-watch", to monitor the calls against the Canucks to determine if there's any fall out from the Burrows-Auger episode. But so far there doesn't seem to be any evidence of the Canucks getting retribution from the men in stripes, thankfully.
My Unsung Hero for this game is Willie Mitchell. It's easy to forget that this game wasn't out of reach for the Penguins going into the second. Mitchell and Salo's job on Crosby and crew was key in keeping the Pens from building on their lead, even if they didn't have their A-game. Nice goal by Willie, too. Hansen had a pretty good game that was overshadowed by the usual suspects.
