Doesn't make sense to me to expose Baer. He's a top six player, and those are hard to come by.

Granlund is good, but I'm still not convinced he's going to be consistent enough to be producing offensively down the road. He's having a good year this year, is this his career year? Or will he improve on his totals next season?

Why can't Benning expose Sutter, and keep Hansen?

Sutter's a lot more valuable than Hansen at this stage.

Us protecting him, most likely :(

I am already bracing myself for having to watch him play in those hideous Boba Fett jerseys.

Isn't there an option to send Vegas a pick in order to keep them from picking a certain player?

    Why would Buffalo do that?

Alex Nylander is a much better prospect than Virtanen. Virtanen doesn't have much value, something similar to Yakupov is probably what he'd fetch. He has disappointing everyone since his draft, GMs see he can't produce.

That was a tongue in cheek comment about Nylander.

I personally am on the wait and see train when it comes to Virtanen.

Really hope what I heard on HNIC tonight wasn't a fact... Don't want to see Virtanen traded for Kane... Kane is a cancer.

If Virtanen is traded, it should be for another young offensive prospect.

    Someone like Alex Nylander?

Yeah. me too. I hope he comes back, and is stronger than ever. But that line might be a little soft. Wish Jake was ready, but he's not. He needs to be playing a lot more. like every night, and in a top six role as well. Best place for that would be Utica, imo.

Better than having Skille IMO. And better for the organization overall to have Jake in a top 6 role in Utica.

  6. Virtanen had a very good, not great, second half in his first year. The way he drove play and created open space showed us a glimpse of what type of player he could be in the coming years. It would be nice to see him put up 30+ points in his second year, but showing consistency in his game for the full year would be even better.

Good point about LA being a better choice. You said we "recoup a pick" if he doesn't sign with us. How does that work and where/when would that pick be? If that is true, then drafting someone from the NCAA isn't the risk that others have been describing.

idk if we recoup a pick since he is a 2nd. If we did it would be the first pick in the 3rd round since he was drafted in the 2nd.

My mistake. Compensation picks are only for first rounders. Unfortunate considering how the NCAA has emerged as such an awesome developing ground for players that need a little more playing time, like goalies. Let's hope that Benning frankly and emphatically told Demko's parents that his decision needs to be made ASAP in fairness to the team that drafted him and has from the start been honest with him about their plans for his future.

    From the HockeyWriters in 2012:

    Quote

The fact that Schultz is, by all accounts, leaning towards free agency (with Edmonton a rumored destination according to Bob McKenzie of TSN) presents a threefold problem for Anaheim as an organization; They stand to lose their best prospect, they’ll receive no compensation, and they possess zero leverage in trade negotiations.

According to section 8.3(b) of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, compensatory selections, which are provided in the second round, are only available if a team fails to ink a player selected in the first round.

And, his father tweeted today that the family are huge Ducks fans, as they live in San Diego. Hopefully, he's not waiting to be a UFA to play for them.

That would certainly be weird considering the Ducks have such a young tandem in Andersen and Gibson, who at this point look like legit NHL starters (they won the Jennings Trophy this year). If Demko would really like to play for a team in his home state, the King's would seem to be a better fit for him. They have no other comparable goalie prospects and there's the chance to develop under Quick, a guy who's won 2 cups, a Conn Smyth and a Olympian.

Honestly not at all stressed about whether he signs or not. If he does, awesome, end of story. If he doesn't, then we recoup a pick and Benning gets a chance to flex his awesome draft muscles. I'd just prefer Demko announce his decision sooner rather than later in order to give management a chance to go after Michael Garteig.

  9. Not at all surprised that Stetcher chose the Canucks over the Oilers. He was an integral part of UND's backend this season and I think he see's himself developing into a top 4 guy in the league someday. With Nurse, Reinhart and Klefbom pretty much locked to be Edmonton's future top 4, there's a lot more of an opportunity in Vancouver for him to play a bigger role.

Looking forward to see what he brings to camp and pre-season. Hoping the Canucks have another Ben Hutton scenario with him.

Well, it shouldn't. But I mean, somebody like Boeser can look and see that 20+ players in his age group were taken ahead of him that don't have a say in where they play because... they shouldn't. The Canucks haven't mistreated him. He now has the attention of the hockey world after his strong play, but he's still a teenager playing in college, which is typically seen as a league lower on the totem than major junior. Maybe the kid deserves to be selfish, but what does that even really mean? That Vancouver isn't a "cool" place to play?

That's the hardest part about all of this. If Thatch decides he's not going to play for Vancouver, he's saying just that - he doesn't like our city, he doesn't like our colours, he doesn't like our logo, and he doesn't like our team. I'm not gonna sit here and let these kids insult this organization like they've somehow "earned" the right to pick and choose where they play. Even Connor McDavid is in Edmonton, what a bummer of a place that is to live... but they took him. Despite being told he's "generational" etc. etc. he's still a hockey player overcoming incredible odds to play in the greatest league in the world. He wears those colours proudly, even if it wasn't the absolute perfect vision he had when he closed his eyes as a kid.

That's why I think these kids will sign.

Also, I think Benning and Willie (begrudgingly) force-starting the youth movement this year was in part an indication to our prospects still in the minors that we're trying to revamp our image. We're not a "good" team or a "bad" team - we are whatever this next wave of players make us. These kids don't have to carve out roles, they will be lynchpins of the whole core moving forward. Space has ALREADY been made for them.

I haven't closely followed the whole Jimmy Vesey saga but from what I've read, Nashville's GM said Vesey repeatedly said he would sign and spurned them for Boston in the end. If Demko did something like that, made a commitment to the team and went back on it, that would be insulting to the city and organization. I want to believe Benning asked Demko at the combine, before drafting him, if he could see himself playing in Vancouver and received a positive answer.

I would be very surprised if he's not signed. Also, you guys heard Boeser's interview? He's signing. I mean, hell, why wouldn't they? These are late 1st rounders/early 2nd round picks. They're promising young athletes, but should know better than to try to call the shots at this stage... especially for no real reason other than to slight the team that drafted them.

I don't really think a player's draft number affects their decision to test out free agency or not.

If he chooses to go back for another year, I think the possibility of him signing will really depend on how the team's young guys perform. Whether or not he feels like the new core of this team is one he fits into and could win with.

  12. Jim Benning on Shinkaruk and Gaunce. “The thing he likes to do is he likes to go to the net and score. But there are other parts of his game – like, an example, Brendan Gaunce maybe doesn’t have the offensive skill set like Hunter but all the details in his game are there so when we call (Gaunce) up, he can adjust to the pro game and help our team win.”

    http://www.metronews.ca/news/vancouver/2016/02/22/canucks-reportedly-trade-hunter-shinkaruk-to-calgary.html

Gaunce is a completely different player compared to Shinkaruk. If you've been watching Utica games after Vey was called up, Gaunce has been one of their best performers in all situations, on the pp and pk, trying to protect leads in the last minutes and breaking ties. He's been Green's go to guy. Green called him Utica's most improved player last year, he had a better pre-season and was called up before Shinkaruk.

It sucks to lose Shinkaruk for Grandlund, a player we arguably don't need. But to suggest that Gaunce will also be moved as well just doesn't line up with what management has been saying about him. If Vey hadn't been acquired and played a whole season with the team, Gaunce probably would have gotten the call when Sutter went down.

  13. Seems like being the local kid picked at #6 is getting to him. Couple with the fact that JV admitted himself that Higgins' injury at the start of the season was one of the reasons he made the team. Then you've got Willie D rotating him in and out of games and slotting him up and down the lineup.

Give the kid a little stability and structure, like Horvat and McCann have gotten and maybe he'll stop playing so gun-shy.

  14. 29 minutes ago, Horvat said:

I really believe Rodin will at least, show up come preseason. Fingers crossed he can make the team as i think he'd go back to sweden if he didn't, SHL or NHL for our guy. I agree he could be an improvement on Higgins with more offensive potential and better skating, all whilst playing a decent 200 ft game!

Next year on the right wing we'd have:

    Anton Rodin

    Alexander Burrows

    Darek Dorsett

    Alex Grenier

    Jake Virtanen

    Brock Boeser

    Radim "The Dream" Vrbata

    .... Pick 4

    Don't forget Jensen.
