To Nashville: Anthony Beauvillier, 2024 4th (NJD), Linus Karlsson

Predators were bottom six in offense last season (before trading Johanssen and Duchene), averaging 2.7 goals per game.

They receive the best player in the trade, at the cost of ~$2.4M (of their remaining $7.9M) cap space. He’s young enough to re-sign and support the rebuild if he fits well. If not, he can return a higher pick at the TDL, as a proven playoff performer, to support the rebuild.

They receive a mid-round pick and a near-NHL-ready prospect, to balance the value of cap space.

    To Vancouver: Yakov Trenin

Canucks swap a middle six, skilled winger for a grittier, bottom 6 player PK'er , and $2.4M in cap space. Trenin adds size (6’2” 201 lbs) and toughness we’re missing and is the same age as Beau (26). He’s signed for one more year at $1.7M.

    SCOUTING REPORT

The Russian forward is as tough as nails and will drop the gloves with anyone. More than just a fourth-line scrapper, he has patience, vision and good playmaking skills. Plays well without the puck. Is still learning when to pass and when to take the shot himself. Can play either wing or center and is a solid penalty killer.

Long Range Potential: Big, tough two-way forward.

“One player on the Nashville Predators who doesn’t get nearly the amount of praise that he deserves for how important he is to the team is Yakov TreninBeing primarily a depth role player who plays hard minutes on the penalty kill, Trenin can sometimes be easily overlooked in the box score. However, if you watch the games closely, you’ll quickly discover just how vital Trenin is to this team and how it operates.

Trenin is the prototypical high-motor player that makes the most of every second he logs on the ice. He only gets an average of 14:08 of ice time per game, but still manages a lot of shots. He is sixth on the Predators in shots on goal with 80. He is on pace to set a career high in that category. The biggest attribute from Trenin is obviously his role on the penalty kill. A part of the team that has become a strength and calling card for the team. They commit a lot of penalties, but more and more they’re showing that they can be called upon to kill off some big penalties in critical moments. Trenin is never shy about laying out a big hit, either. He’s sixth on the team in hits with 97. He uses his power forward abilities to pressure puck handlers and often times creates scoring rushes of his own by powering his way up the ice like a bull in a china shop.”

    Would Nashville entertain this?

Would you be happy with this for the Canucks?

@Bob.Loblaw appreciate any insight on his advanced stats - especially the PK

    I could go for this.

Blue Jackets are looking to bounce back after a miserable season and looking at their forward depth- they lack a 2nd line imo.

Other then Jenner, Laine, Gaudreau- the offensive skill drops off. Hoping for better seasons from their young talent they could use a semi veteran presence like Boeser/ Garland

    Trade Option 1:

    Blue Jackets recieve:

    Boeser or Garland

    Canucks recieve:

    Andrew Peeke

    ---

    Trade Option 2:

    Blue Jackets receive:

Boeser or Garland, Rathbone, 2025 2nd rd pick.

    Canucks Receive:

    Boqvist

Boqvist is an upcoming dman, not the same size as peeke but shows some promise as a younger dman. Thus the additional draft asset and prospect Rathbone

    --

we dump some cap- get better on the back end with more options

    Nope.

I think, both, Boeser and Garland are going to have much better seasons this year.

Certainly can’t teach the size and d kills Klim has, that’s for sure.

If RT puts him in a low risk position to start, say fourth line right wing, where he can concentrate on a simple, mistake free game, while still honing his skills; I think he could flourish and slowly work his way up to third line minutes.

He's got the skills to be an effective forechecking, high energy, power forward with, possibly, slightly higher then average scoring ability.

If he meets his potential, I can a reliable 40-50 pnt player here.

Third line center would be ideal.

PIT seems poised to buyout Granlund once the O'Connor arbitration goes through. This leaves them with a bottom 6 that does not provide much secondary scoring. They have Rutta pencilled into their bottom pairing, and lots of depth on D with Ruhwedel, Ty Smith and Friedman currently as 7th, 8th, 9th Dmen.

    Proposed trade:

To VAN: Rutta + 2024 2nd round pick

To PIT: Beauvilier + 2024 4th round pick (NJD)

This trade for Beauvillier gives PIT extra scoring in their bottom 6 and they still have plenty of depth on D.

    Could contain: Text, File

For VAN the trade is about moving out some cap, improving our picks in 2024, and adding some more veteran depth to our top 6 D.

We finish off the roster by signing Suter ($1.6m) and Watson ($1m):

    Could contain: File, Page, Text

I'm more interested in seeing Beau in a full season with this team.

  5. Kuzmenko               Petey               Mikheyev

    Beauvillier               Miller                Boeser

    Joshua                    Blueger            Garland

    Podkolzin                Aman               Klimovich

    Di Giuseppi

    Hughes               Cole

    Soucy                 Hronek

    Wolanin              Myers

    Brisebois

    Demko

    Silovs

I have a lot of boldness in my line-up but the boldest is Klimovich.

In his second AHL season, he really upped his game and looks to be, at least, a bottom six shut-down player with offensive up-side and could move up in the line-up.

I believe he'll, at least be one of the last cuts, if he needs more development but, I see him, getting to start the season with the team with a real chance to stick.

In a limited role, Podkolzin can be an effective player. To this point in his development, top six may be out of reach but, with more time, he should be a third line player in his prime. For now, however, he gets a fourth line spot.

Imo, the biggest question mark is second line RW. If Boeser ", stumbles out of the gate," look for Garland to move up. If both falter, we're in trouble, given their salaries, market value and our lack of cap-space.

Silovs, imo, is our second best goalie and should be in the second position where he can get 20-25 starts and continue his development.

This team still has a ways to go before it can be considered a true contender but, this also provides opportunity for players like Klimovich, Podkolzin, and others, not in the line-up, to step up and showcase themselves.

With the additions of Cole and Soucy, comes greater defensive capability and physicality; two aspects this team, sorely, lacked in. We should see a better penalty kill and a significant reduction in goals against.

I believe next season will bring back playoff hockey to BC.

As many of you might know, I am NOT pleased with the Hronek trade. Our team is nowhere near competitive, and looking at Hronek, he doesn’t exactly fit much of our needs on defense other than being an offensive right handed defenseman.

He is not particularly good in his own end, he’s a bit undersized, and is more of a PP specialist than a 5 on 5 catalyst, something I would expect from a defenseman that costed a 1st and a 2nd. Not to mention being one of the only teams out of the playoff for 7 of 8 years trading 1sts like we’re competitive.

The problem is, he puts up points, and is in line for a significant raise. Some comparibles are:

Sergachev: $8.5M x 8 (averaged 30-38 points a season before extending, career high 65 points)

    Trouba: $8.0M x 8 (averages 20-30 points)

    Werenski: $9.583M x 6 (averages 30-40 points)

    Chabot: $8.0M x 8 (averages 30-45 points)

    Morrissey $6.25M x 8 (averages 25-35 points, career high 76 points)

    Provorov $6.7M x 6 (averages 25-35 points)

All these guys signed their extensions between 23-26. Hronek is 25, and already averages 30-40 points a season.

What is stopping him from asking those types of contracts? We aren’t getting him for under $7M, especially if he puts up 35+ points.

In a deep draft such as this, having 2 1st round picks, a 2nd round pick, and a 3rd round pick would have helped this organization immensely both depth and value.

Yzerman fleeced us so hard. What an absolute disastrous trade that I don’t see paying off for us one bit.

Too early for this topic. Ask again around Christmas.

Watching Vice's The Dark Side of the Ring got me thinking ....

While not exactly mainstream per-se Pro-Wrestling has been part of the global Cultural pastime for decades now. It's an industry that is shunned upon by the mainstream but respected enough by the global audience with names like Batista, John Cena, and Dwayne Johnson all starring in billion dollar (or near that) grossing blockbusters.

Kevin Owens, while not as big as a name as those mentioned, Is quite a big WWE star in his own right. A former WWE World Champion and recently main evented night 1 at Wrestlemania 39. Over the last year there has been a developing relationship between Owens and former Canucks coach Bruce Boudreau especially when Boudreau revealed to the media that he was quite a Wrestling fan and one of his favoriate wrestlers was Owens himself.

Since then, and before Boudreau got fired, Kevin Owens has been quite the representative for the Canucks even wearing a Canucks jersey during a WWE live event.  The WWE, now sold to the same company that owns the UFC, is looking to only be bigger than ever in the Sports-Entertainment landscape.

Vancouver Canucks Management and ownership should have found a way to capitalize on this opportunity brining brand awareness to the Canucks and perhaps do a co-promotion with the WWE. Imagine if WM39 Kevin Owens came to the ring wearing a Canucks jersey or Boudreau accompanying Ownes and Sami Zayn at WM and promoting the Canucks? or perhaps in other cross promotion ideas.

Was Canucks Management too hasty? in letting go Boudreau ? Perhaps they could have worked an agreement with Boudreau in staying in the organization in a VP or even as a special broadcaster for the Canucks? Imagine the visibility the brand would have gotten if they continue this Owens/Boudreau thing as part of the Canucks organizaiton.

Heck maybe Rick Tocchet could join as the assistant coach but Boudreau as the head coach. And when Boudreau has to commit to a WWE event Tocchet can take over as interim head coach.

So we still get Tocchet helping the team while Boudreau will bring visibility to the Canucks brand both in the wrestling space and mainstream?

For all we know we could have had a legion of Canucks fans become fans due to them being WWE fans?  Imagine if the next Saudi event Boudreau joins Owens and Sami Zayn (since he can now perform in Saudi Arabia for some reason), they all come in with Canucks gear talk about it. And perhaps The Canucks would be considered Saudi Arabia's hockey team and would get an influx of fans and perhaps merchandise. Maybe even play some games in Saudi Arabia with the Canucks as part of the NHL's global series.

While I don't really see this as missed opportunity, I do see issues with their branding strategy, if they even have one.

Looking at "The Core 4" sports in North America, it's not hard to find the biggest brand names. Boston Celtic, LA Lakers, Chicago Bulls, Golden State Warriors, any of the original 6 hockey teams, LA Kings, New England Patriots, Green Bay Packers,New York Yankees, LA Dodgers, Boston Red Sox, and to a slight lesser extent, the Toronto Blue Jays.

All these teams have relevance in more then just their respective markets. This is because they've created a look, they've created winning cultures, and history's.

For whatever reason, Canuck ownership and management have always missed the boat, when it comes to their brand. They've ever created a winner and, by extension a culture they've never had a look that people will buy into.

Imo, until these issues change, The Canucks will always be that irrelevant team in the far corner of the map no one, except locals will care about.

    • Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman cites colleague Jeff Marek to report that the two restricted free agents the Nashville Predators will issue qualifying offers are center Cody Glass and defenseman Alexandre Carrier. That means notable players such as 2017 first-round pick Cal Foote and capable defensive winger Rasmus Asplund will hit the open market. It’s somewhat a surprise to see Foote go unqualified, seeing that he was recently acquired as part of the Tanner Jeannottrade and does have a first-round pedigree.
    • Sam Steel won’t be issued a qualifying offer by the Minnesota Wild, according to The Athletic’s Michael Russo. Steel had a decent season with the Wild, scoring 10 goals and 28 points playing at times in the team’s number-one center role. But the Wild could be weary of Steel’s arbitration potential given their dire cap issues, so he’ll now have a chance to hit the open market in a few days.
    • I like Cal Foote lots of upside and would add toughness say 1 yr X 950,000 - One way deal,  show me more ?

Also seeing Puljujarvi's not getting qualified.

  9. Well, Willander wasn't my top want (they went 5th and sixth) and I am still not happy with this whole, pro-Swede movement PA has going on but, sounds like Willander really wanted to be here. Gotta love that.

why Columbus does this. They get another top pick. They need middle 6 help more than anything. And they have 2 quality rhd prospects coming up.

Why Vancouver does this. A top 4 shot blocking stay at home rhd , hopefully a good partner for Quinn. We maintain a first round pick while shedding some salary in Garland.

i think it’s a fair trade for both teams, thoughts?

Oh I’m running on the big assumption we can trade Meyers after his bonus is paid. I’m also assuming real gm has a good feel one way or the other on moving Meyers before they would make this trade.

My opinion is that 2021-2022 Garland is the real Conor Garland and that, if, a trade is made, it's a hockey deal and not a cap dump.

Garland, on his own merit, has value. So much so, that I'm more for keeping him then dealing him.

Hoglander, on the other hand, I wouldn't be too broke up about.

I am, also not into dropping another first rounder, even if it's dropping to another position.

Teams I think could use Garland:

    New York Rangers

    Minnesota Wild

    Pittsburg Penguins

    Buffalo Sabres

And yes, The Columbus Bluejackets ( but not in the proposed deal)

This would buy us time to make transactions for optimal returns, open up more trade partners, and reduce the leverage of teams like Chicago. It also takes the pressure off buyout decisions.

As the team with the highest cap spending, we seem to benefit the most from this…

I'll start by saying, I don't believe anything can help this team until there is an ownership change.

More money only gives the current regime room to make more mistakes.

One word that I keep thinking about when it comes to the Canucks is, culture; or, should I say, our lack of it.

    Think about it.

    Do we have an identity?

    A playing style?

    Or, even a look?

Have we had a true era of competitive hockey, where we've been a true contender for a significant amount of time?

Sure we've had a couple of seasons that we can claim to have been dominant, with one culminating in our best chance we had to win a cup but, even that was fleeting and we went right back into obscurity which is where we stand to this day.

Vancouver is not a destination players want to come to unless it's a last resort or they are over-paid to do so.

Another word that has become a big part of todays culture is, branding.

Having solid culture, in conjunction with direction creates a solid brand.

We have poor culture, no direction, no winning history, and a look that leaves a lot to be desired.

I hear a lot of complaining about favoritism toward the original six teams ( which I don't believe) but, what is it that makes them so important?

Answer. They all have solid brands from which solid followings have been created. They all have storied histories and Stanley cups.

The Kraken came into the league with a solid look and have quickly established a culture in Seattle. They are looking to be a team players will want to play for.

I believe that this team needs to undergo a complete overhaul.

This includes ownership, personnel, and look.

Ownership must understand the game of hockey and identify the key aspects of it and draft with all of them in mind.

    Character

    IQ

    Skill

    Size

    History

Character- the will and need to win, the want to make ones self better as a hockey player and individual. The need to protect fellow players. The ability to go beyond one's comfort zone to get a job done.

IQ- the ability to process information at a fast pace and make snap, correct decisions under pressure.

    Skill- stick-handling, shooting, and skating

Size- big players are better able to throw and absorb hits. they are more capable in front of nets. Bigger players are harder to push around and intimidate.

History- I don't care what anyone says, history shows that championship teams are still 70+% Canadian. No other nation cares as much about the Stanley Cup as Canada. This goes for players. Canadian players will play harder and sacrifice more for a cup then anyone else. History also shows that the team that can walk the fine line between acceptable play and unacceptable play, will win. This is more commonly known as walking the edge.

I could go on but this post is getting too long but I believe that, until these core issues are addressed, we will always be that small team in the northwest no one outside BC and even in BC, no one cares about.

In my opinion we are one of the most irrelevant teams in the NHL primarily because we've seemed to lack intelligence when it comes to strategically building back after 2011. It was painful watching Boston win in 2011 but the fact that they've been contending basically every year since then has been salt in the wound. We're among the bottom of the league when it comes to playoff appearances in the last 8 years (not counting the bubble illusion) and somehow we've managed to become one of the most cap tight and contract inefficient teams at the same time!

I think our current management groups is the brightest we've had in a while and I'm rooting for them. But it's ownership and ownership alone that's responsible for the fact that our management teams have been consistently tasked with making the playoffs rather than being given the chance to build it back (case in point, Trevor Linden). It's also ownership that is responsible for us being the last team in the NHL (with the news this week on Calgary) to not have a practice facility. Our ownership has made news consistently over the years for shady business practices and this year domestic abuse allegations took this to a new level (I was hoping for the NHL to step in at that point...but apparently that's not embarrassing enough).

I can't imagine the Aquilini's selling the Canucks (which I think it's more out of a love for real-estate than the team). But I also can't imagine something that would invigorate this market more than a new ownership group coming in with a comprehensive and intelligent plan for turning things around including investing in a FULL renovation of the arena, a practice facility, and a vision for building a contender through drafting and development.

Some people I know are jumping ship on the Canucks right not but I'm all in as a fan of this team. I just feel like it's the ownership above all else that gives me a sense of hopelessness for the future...

So is there anything we can do to force/pressure for a change in ownership (besides abandoning the team altogether)?

The only way to cause change is to hit owners where it hurts the most.

    Their wallets.

It is said that owners have the right to do with their teams as they wish and, this is true but, fans have the right to spend their money as they see fit.

Until the building starts to empty and the profits start drying up, nothing will change.

The Aqualinis are very fortunate they own a team with a passionate fan-base.

The NBA has been rigging lotteries forever. Not far fetched to believe a former NBA commissioner would be doing the same thing…

When are Canucks fans going to stop blaming the league for the shortcomings of the team and put it squarely where it belongs.

    Canuck ownership.

Trevor Linden- leaves the Canucks under mysterious circumstances.

Jim Benning- wins cup in Boston then completely s@#ts the bed in Vancouver

Jim Rutherford- 2 Stanley Cups with the Penguins and is, so far, falling short here.

Now they've hired. what was supposed to be, a superstar management team, and it seems to be broken.

These hockey people aren't simply crossing the BC border and forgetting how to manage teams and suddenly start making unwise, and at times, stupid decisions.

This wreaks of ownership tampering or, at the very least, ownership not knowing, or caring about, it's fan-base.

I don't know that Aquaman, truly understands the game of hockey.

He may know the business side but, Does he understand what it takes to win a Stanley Cup?

I have to say no because this team isn't even close and, imo, we're looking at a sixtieth anniversary, still without one.

As I see it, this is, absolutely, an ownership issue.

  15. I was going to make a post about Garland to Columbus.

I, however wouldn't want any roster players back as the rest of my post was going to involve Lawson Ceouse coming to Vancouver.

Keep in mind, my proposal comes strictly from my perspective if I were GM.

Garland and Lekkerimaki to Columbus for LA's 1st rounder.

I like Garland's gritty style but, he's too small and unwilling to back it up.

Lekkerimaki may become a prolific point producer but is too one dimensional and lacks size and physicality.

Columbus is still working on a core and could use Garland as an effective vet who brings offence and a gritty style to the team.

Lekkerimaki is a promising player for them to develop.

We have a solid, point producing forwards but need to add effective, complimentary players to the mix (enter Lawson Crouse), in order to take the next step.

Podkolzin has yet to become what we'd hoped he would., Klimovich is showing promise but is still a couple seasons away (imo), and Hoglander is finding success in "The A" but hasn't yet been able to bring it at the NHL level.

Imo, if we don't get the 1st OA in the lottery, our 1st rounder will be available with it's position determining the asking price.

Regardless, I would be seeking a deal involving Crouse or another with the same attributes.

  16. I believe that, unless The Canucks win the lottery, their 1st rounder will be up for grabs, and only the pick position will determine the asking price.

If Arizona is to be a dance partner, Lawson Crouse would be high on my wish-list.

Of course this means moving money out but, players like Garland and Myers could be attractive, given both played much better under RT then BB.

The Rangers could be a great spot for Garland, while Myers actual money owed should be attractive to many teams.

Under the hypothetical of one, or both being moved I propose the following scenarios.

    1. If we stay at 11, or move down, we offer the 1st for Lawson Crouse and their 2nd this year.

    2. If we, amazingly, move up to 2nd or 3rd, we offer it for Lawson Crouse, Connor Geekie, and their 1st either next year or 2025

Watching the Bruins and Panthers series, should really emphasize Vancouver's woeful lack of gritty, hard-nosed players who are willing to get in the trenches.

Lawson Crouse is, very much, one of those. He also has the versatility to move up and down the line-up and still be a contributor.

I believe, given the talent on this team, Crouse would flourish here and be a long-term solution to a team need, Geekie (in the second scenario) gives us a solid center for the future who brings size to the center position, and the 2nd rounder gives us a lower pick to replace the one given up.

Another 1st rounder gives them 3 at this years draft, touted to be one of the deepest in a long time. For a team still trying to build a core, those picks are essential.

Yes, trading Geekie may seem a little counter- productive to a re-building team but, I see him as more of a 3C then a top 2. This years draft is definitely center heavy. I see plenty of Centers in the top 10 that should fit a top 2 role much better.

    Kuzmenko               Petey               Mikheyev

    Beauvillier               Miller                Boeser

    Joshua                                             Crouse.

    Di Giuseppe            Dries

    McDonough / Hoglander

I think someone like Oskar Sundquist might be a great signing for the 3C spot but that's for another post.
