NJD was 57.7% in the faceoffs….which leads to possession which leads to shots… which lead to goals…. Horvat was the only guy that was over 50% in a lopsided loss/lopsided faceoffs.. AGAIN. This isnt the first time this season either where he was the only guy above 50%. He was 55% and Pettersson was 33% thats like the 3rd or 4th time Petey has been under 40%, Studnicka was dudnicka in the dot at 29%. Aman was 50% but Im not sure how many he took.

Horvat has consistently been above 50% in almost every single game this season. If we lose him, its going to get a lot uglier. Idc what the return is, if its not a consistent C, we’ll be chasing pucks and digging them out of the back of our net a lot more often.

Our centre’s not named Horvat, need to start pulling their weight.

Faceoffs that are cleanly won are not high, it's the part of all the wingers to win faceoff scrums. The Canucks lose to many of these and that is the problem. There are only a handfull of NHL players that can win a faceoff with a high rate of clean draws. Most players are too evenly match in the dot which results in a scrum.  The teammates most help win the puck position off the tie draw.

  2. Even playing at their best Van was going to be hard pressed to beat the NJD. Stillman and Bear were in hard position for their first game played after a long time off. Have to give NJD credit they play a tight fast pace game with very little mistakes. I say the way NJD are playing right now they are a top 5 team in the whole league.

I'm not upset at this lost, it shows the Canucks can not keep pace with the top teams at this point and time.

Now where does this franchise go from here?

I'm 50/50 on let it ride out or make a huge change.

Does Van trade as many players as they can: Horvat, Miller, Boeser, OEL, and Myers. Salary retained on OEL(50%) and Myers(50%) , get what you can.

this is really poor showing by Oilers fans. Show your displeasure if needed boo etc., but this is just pathetic loser behavior.

Very pathetic, especially when the Oilers were down 3 games to begin with. Plus the kid seem like a super person with a great family.

he’s trying to convince you that 5’11” isn’t 1 inch short of 6.0’ and 197 lbs isn’t 3 pounds short of 200 pounds I wouldn’t sweat that to much.

Just someone who is too lazy to do the research and find out from himself what the circumstances were behind how the Canucks were able to get him for so cheap. Also as to why  the Cane's were willing to let him go, which had nothing to do with the cluesless rumor Bear was in Rod's dog house.

you know you've touched a nerve when it elicits a phat ramblerant like that one^^^^^

I'm not even going to try to decipher that pile of gibberish

in what league is 5'11' 197 size

     and 33 minutes snarl

I think you have him confused with Gino Odjick

he is the same size a Burroughs, and I'm willing to bet Burroughs has a lot more snarl

If he can't get out of Rod's dog house, he prolly doesn't get out of mine

I have been outside in the rain all day

you sound like you need a nice cuppa chamomile tea and an arrowroot cookie

He was never in Rod's dog house. He got Covid -19 and for a long time after had breathing problems and could not finish the season and playoffs. The Cane's then signed Burns, plus chatfields positive play and cap reasons pushed Bear out.

Racism? Sorry vancan but what is that all about?

EDMONTON, Alberta – Edmonton Oilers general manager Ken Holland said any racist comments directed to First Nation defenseman Ethan Bear are “totally unacceptable” and “disgusting.”

Holland said he was told about the issue by teams staff just before his season-ending address to the media Wednesday.

Bear’s girlfriend, Lenasia Ned, posted on social media that the defenseman “received numerous racist messages and comments” in the aftermath of the Oilers’ four-game series loss to Winnipeg in the first round of the NHL playoffs.

The Jets tied Game 4 after a turnover by Bear, with Winnipeg eventually winning in triple overtime. The 23-year-old Bear is from the Ochapowace Nation in southern Saskatchewan.

“He’s a tremendous role model for all young athletes, especially in the Indigenous community,” Holland said. “He gives time to the community. He’s popular in the locker room. … I feel sick for him, I feel disappointed for him that he would he would get this kind of abuse. I think we’ve made strides, but there’s a long way to go to create a world where we’re where everybody feels safe and they don’t get this kind of racism and abuse.”

Holland said he planned to reach out to Bear.

“I’m 65 years old. I don’t live in that social media world,” he said. “I want to talk to our PR people . . . and see what we can do as an organization to try to make sure this doesn’t happen in the future.”

Bear, with Ned at his side, addressed the situation with a statement in a two-minute video posted to social media later Wednesday.

“I know this doesn’t represent all Oilers fans or hockey fans, and I greatly appreciate your support and love during this time. I’m here to stand up to this behavior, to these comments. I’m proud of where I come from, I’m proud to be from Ochapowace first nation. I’m not just doing this for myself, I’m doing this for all people of color, I’m doing this for the next generation, to help make change to love one another, to support one another, to be kind to each other. There’s no place for racism in our communities, in sports or our workplace.

“I call on all of us to make change and end racism.”

The Oilers followed Bear with their own statement, saying:

“The Edmonton Oilers Hockey Club is equally disappointed in these disgusting, cowardly and racist remarks. While we have witnessed progress in the area of equality and inclusion, this reprehensible behavior demonstrates we still have significant work to do. We call upon everyone in Oil Country to stand up to racism, call out hatred and do their part in making our community one of acceptance, inclusion and respect.”

The NHL also released a statement on Twitter later Wednesday.

“Ethan Bear represents both our game and his Indigenous heritage with dignity and pride,” the NHL said. “He, and all people from Indigenous backgrounds, deserve to feel empowered and respected on and off the ice. We stand with Ethan and his family in denouncing hate.”

The Confederacy of Treaty Six First Nations said in a statement it was appalled by the racist comments.

“We all have a responsibility to speak out against racism in any circumstance, and to ask those involved to stop,” Grand Chief Vernon Watchmaker said. “We are mindful that racism is hurtful and this has gone on for far too long.”

Similar to us dumping Poolman, I wouldn't get too excited with Bear just yet.

Sure, he has potential and boy it'd be nice if he breaks into a 20 minute guy but I don't think he's any better than Burroughs.

Nuts to think we gave up Chatfield and Forsling and they're flourishing now...

Burroughs is ok, but Bear is and will always be the better player. Bear was doing very good in Edmonton until, racism showed it's ugly face. Chatfield is not flourishing he has played solid in 8 games. Forsling and Bear could be compared, both are good. Bear started off good and drop off for good reasons and Forsling slowly improved into a solid player.

Bear lost his place on the Canes playing roster to Jalen Chatfield, who we should remember played on the Vcr farm team and Vcr turned down the opportunity to resign. Speaks volumes to me. I'm not expectina lot and i seriously doubt we'll get a lot. The good news is we didn't need to give up a lot but some one has to go down for Cap reasons

I think peolpe are not getting the full understanding of the reasons why Bear was pushed down the Canes depth chart. With the signing of Burns and having Slavin,Skjei and Pesce they have the offence they need form the back end.  Chatfield adds more defense and is also right handed , which gives them all left/right pairings. Bear was never going to be ahead of Burns or Pesce. Add in his salary and Chatfield is a more capfriendly third pairing. As for him being a scratch for the playoffs, I believe he never got going after he got Covid.

Absolutely right, Don't disagree with the praise for his performances...

The headline is  ' Reading a piece on the biggest surprises in the NHL so far this season and seeing the back-to-back is very trippy from a Canucks perspective'....

Forgive me, but that smells like fishing for controversy to me...

Happy for Chartfield, but there was nothing wrong with the move made at the time.

Yes Chatfield was low on the depth chart for the Canucks. Yes the tweet was looking for controversy for sure.

Its more that its a 'fishing' tweet, to belittle whom ever made the decisiin to let Chartfield go... at the time, nobody gave it a seconf though to see the back of him.
Happy for Chartfield but not looking back in anger that he were let go...

    Cheers Vancan.

True, but players all the time suck(Chat was ok) or do nothing on one team and play solid for another team. It's early , but right now Chatfield has earned the praise for his performance. Whether or not if that was the reasoning behind the tweet.

Why??? Even Mystic Meg in the management group wouldn't have been able foresee this... he was nowhere good enough while here.

Lets get the knives out if there's a chance kinda article.

Thanks for posting though @-Vintage Canuck- as always. Keep up the good work :goat:

Like another poster pointed out the Canes play a style of game perfect for Chatflied. Plus better overall group of defencise men and he is on top of his game. Bear is still the better overall D man though.

Could see him being a good partner for OEL. Based on his numbers, he can actually get the puck out of the zone (through passes though rather than carries).

OEL + Myers get stuck in their own end way too much.

Myers on the third pair probably makes myers better too, less mistakes if he's not playing 23-24 mins a night.

There had to be a personal reason between management and bear in Carolina. No way is Chatflied a better player than Bear. There is not one attribute that Chatfield has over Bear.

  14. What is going on with this fan base. A 5th round pick with salary retain for a position of need and the sky is falling. Look at Bear's stats, he has produced at the NHl level. At age 25 Bear is in his prime if can play a solid defencive game and put up 20 plus points all is good. A mobile two - way defenseman that shoots right a good pick up for van.
