Nobody had OJ at 5, at least not the majority. I am not saying he is wrong but an early first rounder he seems to go against the grain.

Most had him at 6 and some had him at 5 but considering our needs he was a great pick.

    By who's definition? Not mine.

I love Edler, but he's a great #2D who happens to get the most minutes on our team due to a lack of better options, Not because he's a #1D.

Anywhoo... Subban and Weber just got moved for each other but I'd say they cancel each other out

No they don't. Preds won big time. Subban is only 27 years old in his prime and had 51 points in 68 games while having a short term and cheaper contract.

Weber is 31 and had the same amount of points in 78 games while he's signed on a BIG deal that goes on until he's 40 years old.

You said that Benning is great at drafting and then all you did was name some of our prospects.  None of them have proven anything yet

That's the whole point. These prospects I mentioned all had great seasons. Juolevi was the consensus best D and we got him. Look at Derps post on page 33 and tell me that isn't exciting. Demko is the number 1 ranked goalie in the NCAA and Benning believes he has #1 potential and he will be a great goalie. Boeser is another beast. This guy broke records in his first year. Toews had 42 points in 39 games in his first year at North Dakota. Boeser had 60 points in 39 games! Virtanen will be great. At 19 years he's dropping guys like Kesler..imagine in his prime! This guy has all the skill set and will succeed.

My point of the other post was mentioning the prospects we have and what they've done, NOT if they're proven in the NHL because again...they're elite PROSPECTS and you should be excited.

Okay..Congrats to you on getting your man.  I will put you up there with JB, and WS on the genius list if OJ  doesn't make us regret missing Tkachuk.  All three of you should step down if you are wrong though.  If you are going to go out there and make a pick like this when you have a tap in birdie sitting in front of you...you better be right.

Trust Bennings scouting abilities. Look what he's done in the last 2 years alone. Juolevi, Boeser, Demko, Virtanen, McCann (Gudbranson) and Tryamkin will all play in the NHL and there's many more promising prospects like Briesbois, Olsen, Zhukenov and many more sleepers! He know players when he sees them and what's good for the team he's building.

He wouldn't pass on Tkachuk if he didn't know what he got in Juolevi so I trust his judgement and I know he'll be the best defenseman we've ever had.

Edmonton is stating that if Puljvarji wasn't available they were ready to take Sergachev at #4.  Either way, in the end it seems like no matter what Tkachuk was never going to be picked in the top 5.

Is this true? If it is can you post a link?

I think one must also see that it's not all about the points either. Juolevi is able to turn the puck around with a quick transition creating scoring opportunities and as Benning stated (quoted from Brent Sutter), "Juolevi is impossible to forecheck" because he just grabs the puck and it's in the forwards hands before the checking forwards know what to do. I project him to be a 30-35 point (5 goal 30 assist) D in his prime but if he can do better that'd be great.

I know he will be better than that.

    Havent teally chimed in yet.

First of all I'm neutral for the pick. Mainly because I went full desi and ripped benning a new one after last years deaft. I had a nice serving of crow this season. Although Olli may not be the sexy pick for a dman, I dont doubt that he is the top dman at the draft. His numbers dont show it but his hardware does. Few may claim that its due to the team he was on but

Memorial cup champion (tournament  winning overtime assist)

    Wjc champion

    Wjc top defenseman

Along with a 3 assist game in the QF against canada. (I just watched his shift by shift in that game (24mins TOI). He is the reason finland won.

He may never sport the numbers sergachev will (not guaranteed) but OJs play makes everyone on his team better offensively.  When hes on the ice the puck is never in his end. It enters, he gets it usually with stick work, finds an open man, sends him. Advanced stats are becoming more and more popular, im personally not a fan of them, but im willing to bet his corsi numbers are through the roof.

While I like the pick, he definitely needs to work on a few things. Personally i would like to see him more aggressive with and without the puck. I want to see a harder shot from him. And of course upping his weight closer to 200. Maybe 190-200.

I think he has a super high ceiling. Whos to say he cant be duncan keith? I dont think he reaches that level but he certainly has the ability. I think he will be OUR number one dman for years to come. I dont think he becomes a norris winner or anything like that.

    GOOSE OUT

Really, his numbers don't show it?

He had 42 points in 57 games as a 17 year old rookie defenseman whos adjusting to the smaller ice in a new country.

14 points in 18 games in the playoffs including 7 points in 4 games in the Memorial Cup!

He led his team from the backend at the World Juniors with 9 points in 7 games!

Juolevi is a great offensive defenseman with 2-way ability and had great PPG ratios in the season, playoffs and tournaments. His numbers definitely show it.

Smooth skater, great first pass,  great positioning, nice active stick while defending and high IQ. Very excited about Juolevi.

And has offense all over his game! He's a whole package!:towel:

    LOVE the pick!

Going forward 3 years, I hope to see this as what we have as our next core.  Obviously players may move up and down, some may be over/ under rated.  We are pretty set in the middle 6, on D, and in goal.  I don't think that there were any forwards at 5 that would have been probable top line forwards (Tkachuk included).  We needed D more than a 2nd liner.  I think this was a very good pick.  I would have rather had Dubois, but Juolevi still fills a big need for us.  We will likely be drafting high enough to get a 1st or 2nd line forward in the next 2 drafts, but maybe not high enough to get a PMD.

    Demko

    Markstrom

AHL/Trade Bait/Depth/Lose to waivers/Wild card type players: Rodin, Cassels, Grenier, Biega, Stecher, Larsen

Essentially we need 2 first liners, a second liner, a top pairing dman, and to fill out the 4th line in order to complete the roster.  With a fair amount of cap space, and a couple of more higher draft picks, we should see this team rounded out in the next two years.  Benning is building from the back out and getting the harder pieces in place first.  If anything, this draft gave us a little more clarity of how he is building this team.  I am in the minority, but I love the work he is doing.

Virtanen will NOT be a third liner and 2nd line is very realistic. Also Horvat can be a 1C. He had more points in his second season than Henrik and Kesler. He has captain material all over him so don't be shocked if he replaces Hank in the future.

We do however need a 1LW depending on how Baertschi develops and a 2C which isn't that hard to find compared to a 1C because I believe in Bo to take that 1C spot!

Don't count out Juolevi as that number 1 defenseman because he certainly has the tools to reach there and I believe he will be a number 1 defenseman.

    Bo Horvat is NOT elite

    Hes a solid #2

You say he's not elite yet he had more points (40) in his second season than Henrik or Kesler did. Bo posseses a mature mind for a 20 year old and has leadership qualities to become a captain and first line center. So all in all Horvat is an elite prospect and people should be excited about him.

This year's pick was going to be for the future anyways. Even if we got PLD, he would probably make the team in two years. Juolevi will be ready in about 3 years. Even Tkachuk would require 2 years of development before he can join the team.

Think this way. Let's say, three years later we make the playoffs and our defence is,

    Edler-Tanev

    Hutton-Gudbranson

    Juolevi-Tryamkin

The only concern that I have with not being able to pick Dubois is that we didn't get to replace McCann. The top center forward prospect in our system is now... Cole Cassels?

I think you forgot about Bo Horvat, you know the guy that had more points in his second season than both Harnrik and Kesler.

That's a really good trade for all 3 teams imo.

The Jazz are on the come up. They really needed solid pg play to go along with Hayward and their 2 bigs. Pacers just got better too and the Hawks can use Schroeder now.

Is George Hill worth the 12th overall pick? And I love the Jazz and they're definetly on the way up

  14. Really excited about this guy hence the username but honestly I think a change of scenery will prove good to him and we might see more offence out of him but nonetheless a great addition to our D-core. Still 24 so he's got a couple years until he hits his prime!

Defenceman's development is usually longer and Guddy has shown what a force he can become. Let's gooooooo baby I'm pumped::D
