This is only for slide eligible junior players with an ELC. Anyone coming from a pro league or college would burn the year as soon as the contract was signed for this season.

Look at the signings of Teves and Rafferty out of college. Both signed to two year contracts for the end of the 2019(?) season and both burned a year with only 2ish games each.

You are correct. Because he turns 20 before September 16th this year he falls under the over ager category and burns his first year as soon as he signs. It doesn't have anything to do with where he is playing though. It's just about his age.ELC.jpg.4a040c154c4497f2b952aa7d03896756.jpg

actually I'm not sure what his status is for burning a year as per number of games needed  - @mll might be able to shed light on this

Yes, because of the abbreviated season he can play 6 games before it would burn a year off his ELC. Usually the number of games is 10, but the rule was changed for this season.

St Petersburg leading 3-0 half way thru the 2nd.  Podz hasn't featured in the scoring, but seeing a bIt more ice time

He was the net front presence on the 3-0 PP goal. A great job on the screen. I like how he keeps it simple. He didn't move out of the way to try for a deflection, he simply parked himself in front of the goalie and gave him nothing to see.

  4. I do believe there was a level of mismanagement with Jake, but in the end I believe it was just a poor decision to draft him. When they drafted him they were really in a tough spot. He wasn't ready for the NHL, but he obviously had gotten as much out of junior hockey as he could. The Canucks best 1st round picks have all been players outside of the CHL. Boeser, Petey and Hughes were all able to go and continue to develop against older competition in the NCAA and the SHL. This allowed them all to be more NHL ready, and much more confident when they got to the NHL having played against men. You are seeing it again with Hoglander in the SHL. Hopefully Podkolzin gets more of a shot in the KHL as this season moves on.  Jake's option were to go continue to play against players as young as 16 with the Hitmen where he wasn't continuing to develop the necessary skills and habits to play in the NHL or come straight to the Canucks where they could monitor him closely. I am not sure if 2 more years in the CHL would have made Jake anymore ready for the pro game and what he is going through now was sort of inevitable.

In the end Jake just hasn't had the maturity off the ice and the hockey sense on it to make the most out of his tools at the NHL level to this point. Could things change? Maybe, but that is on Jake to make the proper commitment to become a better pro. That isn't just doing what is expected, but going above and beyond. That means simple work ethic and consistency both on and off the ice.

Oh well, it was just a cornerstone draft pick after all, anyone could make the same mistake 3 or 4 times out of 10.

Dale Tallon had 5 1st rounders in his tenure as the Hawks GM. Toews and Kane were homeruns, Skille, Olsen and Beach were busts. So you can be wrong 60% of the time and still help build a dynasty.

  6. If I heard Benning right between periods last night he seemed to hint that it would be more likely that if Dahlen loses today that he will head straight to Utica. I would love to see his team move on, I would to see him here for Saturday, and I would love to see him head to Utica in time to see him help the Comets go on a playoff run. There is no scenario that isn't a positive for his development.

  7. In the games that I have watched he has been the first on the ice on the PK, he is taking the important defensive zone faceoffs, and when the game is close he is on the ice at the end of games with the net empty. At the very least that is a very good indicator that coach Jim Madigan has trust that when the chips are down he will get the job done in the defensive end.

  8. IMO Demko will be up here next year splitting starts with Markstrom. Maybe 60/40 in Markstrom's favor unless Demko shows he can carry the load. The Utica Comets this year have been a very under reported and a great story. I think many assume because of the constant injuries with the big club that they would be struggling too but it hasn't been the case. They won again last night and have collected at least a single point in their last 12 games, a new franchise record. Demko has looked great, Holm had another multi point game last night, after a 2 goal game last weekend and seems to be rounding into form on North American ice. You have to give a lot of credit to Trent Cull, Ryan Johnson and the organization down in Utica for the job they're doing.

  9. Watching the game tonight the Canucks missed what Dorsett brought to the table. Madigan's story about Gaudette and Kevin Roy is what has me excited to see this kid. Sutter is a decent 3rd line centre but he lacks that edge that is needed to go up against the other teams best players. I want that player who has the arrogance and belief that he can go up against any teams best player and go after him for 60 minutes. He may not always bring the same level of skill a McDavid or a Gaudreau has but he will never be outworked. I have watched 10-15 games Gaudette has played this year and his dogged pursuit of the puck is impressive. He doesn't take shifts off and has swagger to his game. If he can bring the intangibles that Kesler and Dorsett brought with some of the scoring touch he has shown at Northeastern we have an important piece going forward.

Had an interesting chat the other day with a player from the ncaa. Now his best friend is very close to gaudette and says he is leaning towards the Canucks especially if they take the boeser route and burn a year of his elc. But don’t want to cause a panic here he is exploring other options as well.

I try not to get concerned over these kinds of things. I think anyone in his position would be wise to at least explore every option available to him but in the end I am confident he will see the way this organization dealt with Brock Boeser and the success he has had and he will sign here when his season ends at Northeastern. He has gone through some great development in the NCAA and by the end of this season or at the beginning of next season there should be a spot down the middle available for him if he proves he is ready.

  11. You always hear coaches say that a particular player needs to play a more north-south game. This guy only knows north-south and I love it. That second goal he went to the net but he had his stick in position and gave his teammate a perfect target for a tip. Add to that after he scored he told his teammates not to do the customary fly by to the bench to tap gloves to avoid rubbing it in during a 6-0 game. So clearly he is a class young guy with strong character. As much as the prospects of a Pettersson/Boeser PP has me excited I am just as intrigued by the possibility of a Gadjovich-Gaudette-Lind line. If their games translate to the NHL that could be scary for the opposition.

  12. The problem with these short tourneys is the ability to gain any line chemistry between players that have never played together. You've seen at the pro level Team Canada bring line combinations (Thornton/Marleau, Perry/Getzlaf, Crosby/Kunitz, etc.) so they don't have develop chemistry in a short period of time. Boeser had that problem at the WJC. Short tourney and no chemistry with linemates. It didn't seem to effect his development. So as much as I will be an interested observer to see how he plays on the smaller ice surface, under the scrutiny of teams that will be focusing on him, I won't be overreacting if he doesn't dominate the way we all hope, the same way I won't overreact if he doesn't play in the NHL next year as we all hope.

  13. You appreciate when your team drafts kids with high character. Playing for Team Canada was clearly a dream and his emotional response makes you love this kid even more. You can take the disappointment and you can sulk or you can use it as motivation to get better. I want players on my team who respond the way he did.

  14. It was like unleashing a wild animal and for a guy who had been in the press box for so long he set the tone for the defense. I can't say enough good things about Biega his heart is second to none. If you aren't going to play him nightly you have to get him in the lineup from time to time just to give the boys an emotional lift.

I'm more worried about "Juloevi". At the draft Benning got them all (Pettersson, Juolevi, Palmu) equally wrong.

Why did you put Juolevi in quotes? Are you implying that he doesn't really exist? Cause that would blow my mind.

  16. IMO he is the most intriguing prospect we have among some very good prospects. I have watched a few of his games and he is literally good at everything at the NCAA level. The most impressive part of his game is dogged pursuit of the puck. He never stops from the time he gets on the ice til the time he leaves. He has a good shot and nice instincts. The best part is that they play him in all situations and when he gets here he will have had three years of solid development. Does this mean he fits in as a really good future 3rd line centre? Can his skill make him a 2nd line centre? No one really knows. The fact that he was a 5th round draft pick makes him all the more intriguing. Maybe Gaudette is our diamond in the rough.
