If canucks win tonight I'll have a lot more confidence in the coaching staff... But I understand the concern on the back end. Canucks team defense looks sloppy and tired all the time. Marky has been sharp as ever and totally stealing wins. I think the tools are in the toolkit, but they're still learning to use them... Properly.

A couple of strong stay-at-home defencemen is a priority for this team to go to the next level, I don't know how JB will accomplish that, but it has to be done.

  2. For this team to have any chance of making and progressing in the playoffs they need a couple of defencemen a la Keith and Seabrook, or at least one such as Pronger, Chara etc. They need this while the forwards are at their peak. At the moment there's nothing in Utica that looks like it'll fit that category, and given the time it takes to develop defencemen the only option will be through trade. This may be a painful process, as you're not going to get something for nothing, so in all likelihood it would be one of the top forwards to go.

  3. Professional sport is intended to be there for our entertainment, whatever one's specific preference is. This season, watching the Canucks I've been more thoroughly entertained than I have for a long time, and that includes times when the Sedins were there weaving their magic but unfortunatly at times without much help and backup. Sure this season there's been nights when the final whistle is eagerly awaited, but on the whole I can't help feeling that this team is headed for something special, as many have said on this site, just look down the pipeline and see what is coming up in the next couple of seasons. I can almost taste dynasty.

  4. I think it's a testimony to his ability that by his standards so far he's having something of a "sophomore" year, yet is still up around #10 in NHL scoring. I believe that given reasonable health his future potential is limitless. Happy birthday Petey and many more of them to come in a Canuck uniform! :towel:

Bure never had a bad season.  When he played he killed it - including in the middle of the clutch and grab era after he left, and before that also in a much tougher era.  Individual skill wise  I don’t think we will ever see a guy like him again.

Remember one game where he went back of the net, flipped the puck over top, then skated round, caught his own pass and took a shot. Didn't score but holy $hit what a move! Even Don Cherry, who was never really a Bure fan was impressed.

  6. Just finished watching the recording of the game, in my opinion today the Canucks were the better team overall; obviously the powerplay needs work, or maybe just more confidence in themselves; despite many people's expectations, and although it's way too early to be sure but Petterson appears to be having a typical "sophomore" year; but to my way of thinking they're serving up the most exciting product on the ice that we've seen for a long time. I'm actually quite optimistic for the future—a couple more years?.

A serious question for you, ynwa:  How do you know that there are "very few" politicians with the intestinal fortitude to resist corruption?  Have you had a career in politics and are speaking from first hand experience?  Do you have evidence that the majority of politicians are crooked?

I'm not trying to be a dick about this, nor am I singling you out.  But I'm geniunely surprised at the tone in this thread by a fair number of people.  Politicians are an easy group to attack these days  (one of the few) but are these attacks based on facts or are people just repeating some unfounded "common wisdom" ?

I get your point, and maybe my response was perhaps too large a blanket. No, I haven't had a career in politics, my comments were largely based on information I've had from friends and acquaintances who have been there and others who have been employed by politicians at various levels.

    Thank for posting @Dazzle

What’s that biblical story about saving a city if Lot can find just five good people?  Politics reminds me of that.  Can we find just five good and honest ones?

You'd have to go a long way back in history to do that. The problem always comes down to power. Many politicians are "good and honest" until they become part of the government in office. That's when temptation, old school wink wink, nudge nudge and plain browbeating from the top comes into play. There are very few with the intestinal fortitude to combat that. Quite frankly I've often wondered if I could myself, given those circumstances.

Right Deb. I like to assess the team every 10 games. That gives a clearer picture of how they are performing over all.

Absolutely! to start suggesting wholesale changes based on one game—especially the first game of the season—just doesn't make sense.By the end of the month we should have a real good read on where the team stands and what, if anything, needs to be redressed.

  10. I used to have a cap with the logo "INSTANT IDIOT—JUST ADD ALCOHOL" written on it, and I'm a little embarrassed to say that at times I proved it. By the time was around Matthews age I'd settled down but still had the occasional blip. I would imagine that on many levels he's totally ashamed of what he did. I think an apology to the security guard, his teammates and fans would be quite sufficient to put this to rest. There's no need to make a circus out of it.

  11. This PC stuff is getting totally out of hand, I've been to costume parties where people, some of whom are close friends, have dressed up in many different costumes representing many different nations, races, religions etc.—Those that I know well are definitely NOT racist or xenophobic in any shape or form. It's all done in the spirit of the event for a bit of fun and entertainment. I believe racial hatred is anathema, but dressing up for a party?—c'mon people.

  12. To try and predict the absolute lineup is a bit of a lottery, there are lots of things that could come out of the preseason and they seem to be overloaded with forwards. One thing I'm really curious about is that they've signed Goldobin for another year to see if he's the real thing or not. There's absolutely no point in playing him if he isn't on one of the top two lines, he's totally out of his comfort zone otherwise and you're never going to see his potential, so who would they demote?

The defence would appear to select itself, with Biega there for when Tanev gets injured.

  13. I've learned over the years to pay no attention to fools, nincompoops and nonentities like this guy appears to be. These kind of comments usually represent an attempt to get some reaction based on the adage that there's no such thing a bad publicity.—Wrong!
