The coach is riding his higher profile guys. Might wanna reconsider that since they've let 4 goals in already.

That was exactly my thoughts haha.

Oh look he is on the ice, gets a shot through, makes a good pass, now we wont see him for 2 more minutes lol.

EP plays the right sidewall on the Swede PP...it is more of 1-3-1 PP with a single point man...but of course he roams up and down the side wall....

Fair enough. Just seems like the directive is take a slot shot or move the puck to the left side high wall for Nylander.

Could just be how this game went but that seemed to be the way it was drawn up in practice lol.

  3. Man does Pettersson slow the game down once the puck hits his stick.

I also feel as though being used as the high man on the right point almost under utilizes his skill.

But then I have not watched his SHL games so maybe that is how he is utilized there as well.

EP has looked "Dominant"  to me...although due to the feed I missed quite a bit ...but everytime he has the puck he is dominant with it and makes the right play....

One play EP spotted a guy about to steal the puck...he skated from his right side spot on the offense all the way to the left side boards...arriving just after the guy stole the puck from a Swede and EP stole the puck back and made a niffty play to keep in the zone...a dominant play.

Yep, Just drew a penalty with his great puck possession.

He is so smooth with his play and he really liked to look to use his teammates.

    ** Edit **

Just got the second assist on the PP

with Virt, it was about getting him out of Calgary where they could control his development, McCann was more of a surprise.  Personally, I'd start BB in Utica unless he absolutely tears it up in camp and pre-season.  he still has a lot of areas that need work

By the time it was evident that McCann needed to be sent down, he was playing a relief role higher up in the lineup than he was ever supposed to. Injuries i feel are what kept him in the lineup longer than he should have.

Got this off of the HF Virtanen thread...

That's depressing but it shows how much work he needs to put in if he wants to carve out a successful career in the NHL. At the very least you need to be able to score at the AHL level if you want to make it, even as a 4th liner in today's game you need to be able to produce.

Yes, but he has had 1, count them 1 AHL season, even at that it was a 3/4 season.

The Comets struggled to score all season long, it was not just Virtanen, it was a team wide lack of skill.

Demko was winning them 1-0 games FFS.

He had his entire game deconstructed down to the basics by Green. In the long run it was for the best, but his focus was not putting up points, when some points did come it was simply a bonus of playing the right way every second of every game.

Even Green has noted that Jake was snake bitten for large portions of the season and if he had been getting the bounces he would have put up much more respectable numbers.

Everyone complains he should have been in the AHL last year ( even though he couldn't ) and then this year its that he didn't do well enough. He lost a year of development and confidence.

    For Christs sake . . . . . . . . . . . .

Statistically its not looking good there's no doubt. Jim Benning said he's never faced adversity before. I think he has the ability to play, he wasn't bad later on in his rookie year, but its up to him and how hard he works to get prepared.

If he does make it next year he needs to play LW though.

Agreed. This is where I think hiring Green will be a good thing going forward for the Canucks.

He seems a bit more adaptable then ol Willie D .

If something is not working instead of tempting insanity and repeating it over and over hopping for something different he changes it up.

Also, again this year was a write off points wise for Virtanen. He had to drop a good number of pounds. Relearn his timing, work on his positioning, intensity and compete level all while trying to build offensive confidence.

If he does play another year in the AHL I think a 30 goal 20 assist campaign is not out of the question for him. If he makes the Canucks to stat the year I could see 15 G's 15 A's. Which for a player of his nature is something that can be built on as the team gets deeper, even younger and more skilled.

Totally agree they are 2-3 years away from being much better as long as the stay on track.  A top two pick this year and a top 5 pick next year would really help.

Also if you look at the contract's Benning has signed ( Sutter / Eriksson ) by the time the team is ready to make some noise in the playoffs their Modified NTC's kick in allowing Benning the flexibility to move them if need be.

He probably should spend an entire year in Utica playing North-American hockey against men first, but I've got a feeling he's going to burst into training camp and steal a roster spot. This kid's skill level is off the charts and probably higher than people think. His defence and physicality might be an issue in the early goings which is why the AHL would be ideal, but I think he's going to make it a really tough decision for the coaches. He, Goldobin and Boeser are going to have to really fight for it.

If Dahlen & Goldobin can both be top 6 wingers for this team going forward, then this years TDL is going to go down as one of the best ever for this team.

It's Exciting to finally see some youth take shape. Horvat, Boeser, Stecher, Goldobin, hopefully Dahlen with Virtanen and Juolevi at some point + whoever we draft this year ( Please be Patrick / Hischier ) , the core of this team could really start to solidify itself as early as the 18-19 season.

If even one or two of the players like, Gaudette, Lockwood, Briesbois, Etc. can make the team over the next 2-3 years I think people will start to forget about year 1 and 2 of Bennings tenure.

I'm guessing if Virtanen - Valk - Goldobin was lined up on the first line all season that Virt would have had plenty of points. I wouldn't worry yet, this season was used to teach him a valuable lesson.

Green himself said Virtanen's game was deconstructed so that they could rebuild ( :bigblush: ) his game into one that would bring him success.

A process like that is going to take its tole on a player offensively as he had to relearn his timing and his positioning and completely change the way the thinks the game.

It's all for his betterment but it means this years offensive totals are a wash in the grand scheme of things.

His skating isn't great but he's powerful on his skates and hard to knock down. It's not as big of an issue as some say it is. Plus from everything I hear his work ethic is second to none so I can see his speed improving soon. He's a lot like Horvat except maybe a bit more gifted offensively at the same age.

Sounds good to me.  Plus skating was a knock against Bo and a guy like Tkachuk,  Bo fixed the problem, Tkachuk's game is based on creating havoc from the face off circles down.  I guess if the kid has other very strong attributes skating is less of an issue (especially since it can be improved with practice/coaching)

He has been quotes as saying that improving his skating is one of, if not the biggest thing he wants to work on going forward.

    So there that.

I'd like to see Jake at least start the year in the A.  Add some power moves to the net to complement that laser of a shot and really dominate before getting his call up.

Either way really looking forward to watching his progress... brings a much needed element to the team.

If Jake come into camp on a mission to prove himself and he does, then let him start with the Canucks, but then hopefully if he starts to waiver Management doesn't hesitate to re-evaluate and possibly send him back to the AHL for a bit to keep him focused.

All conjecture at this point on what may happen, but its all we have right now :P .

At least Zuke is familiar with and wants to play the NA game; sounds like his potential move over there is still with the goal to play here.  Very nice playoff performance for him so far, as another prospect (like Juolevi) who seems to elevate his game when it counts.

Could be a decision based on money and comfortably if he does decide to go to the KHL for a year or two.

Would make more money in the KHL than in the AHL and would be closer to Family and Friends.

I think he knows he needs to develop some more and get stronger before he could crack the Canucks, so even if its 1 year in the KHL before coming back and putting a year or less in at the AHL level no harm no foul.

Hmmm, not sure.  Just because someone's "big", doesn't mean they're tough.  I actually thought he seemed somewhat apprehensive when engaging in scrums.  Not sure it was his deal.  I mean, a guy who apologizes and is outwardly upset over being penalized?

I had hopes that he'd develop a snarl/edge, but there's nothing guaranteeing that.  Mind you, just having a guy of that stature in the line up can be a deterrent, but if he wasn't willing to use his size then the word would get out on that.  We just didn't get a chance to find out.

Tryamkin was more friendly giant than anything, which was sad because when he decided to play mean and tough he was unstoppable, for all of that single 30 seconds to 1 minute shift, then he would go right back to friendly giant again.

Half of this team's toughness just left for Russia.

His 2.2 hits per game is about what Gudbranson averages, soooo, yah. With a full year of Dorsett and Quads we will be fine.
