I don't agree with that. There's a reason why a lot of us are debating whether or not he should turn pro. We've never had a player that we drafted that could start in the NHL the same fall since ever. It doesn't always happen, I would like you to name one player that we drafted that even had this kind of discussion?

When his family thinks that going back to Michigan is "worst" case scenario, I think that tells you a lot on how ready Hughes is to turn pro. I'm not suggesting he plays in Vancouver, I think the best place for him is Utica.

Our current Team President comes to mind

Bo Horvat isn't Trevor Linden.  Linden was more humble, a better producer, a great supporter of teammates, and a clutch performer.

He wants to be the Captain but he's simply not ready. The fact he wants it so bad upsets me.

To be honest, it is the media (ie, Team 1040) and us fans who WANT him to be the next captain; I don't recall seeing anything posted where he explicitly stated his desire to be Captain.  The only times I've seen where he's addressed the captaincy are when the media (post-game Sportsnet reporters/coverage) continuously grill him about it and he has to answer to it.  Respectfully, I would be interested in seeing his "wanting it so bad".

To me. Saying Bo Horvat is the defacto #1 Captain option for this team... when you have this kid dominating the top tier Swedish league is just unfair.  Just because Bo is older and got to the NHL quicker doesn't mean he should be the captain. In fact I would argue he is the wrong personality type to be the captain of this team. He is far to emotional for that role.  If you want a Sedin like leader Pettersson is your guy.  He is even-keeled and will gain the respect of the room very quickly with his skill.  The total ignorance of this kids upside is insanity.  That's like awarding Ryan Kesler the captaincy when you have Henrik Sedin still in Europe. you give it to him because he's been here longer.  totally disagree with that argument.  Elias' teammates love him and would do absolutely anything for him.  He is a leader who you want to play for and he produces an elite level.  I think it's only fair to give Elias, Juolevi, and some of the other prospects an opportunity before naming Horvat at 23 the next captain of this team.

Linden was made team captain at age 20 or 21 before Bure arrived....... just saying.  B)

That is the prevailing thought among most fans and the media.  I don't see it happening.  He might be a great captain and if he does become the captain i will support him.  If he does it will be once Elias has had a chance to earn the respect of the locker room. They won't just hand it to Bo because he's older and more established.  Elias has a far better pedigree and is smashing records in Sweden.  Lets put this into perspective.

The Sedin's just retired as the best Canucks of all time:

I agree that Pettersson is the more offensively gifted player between the two, but captaincy is more than who scores the most points (see Toews vs. Kane, Linden vs. Bure, etc).  While Pettersson is showing more passion via the posted interview, hence, possibly appearing to possess more leadership material than previously shown, a captain is also more than the grab-you-by-the-scruff-of-your-neck, rah-rah and pom-pom's (see Kesler vs. Sedin).  As mentioned previously, Bo has been mentored by the Sedins and other veterans previously, and has been commended by former junior coaches and teammates.  Bo would, presently, be the most logical choice.

  5. It's official!  I say game on, and welcome Seattle (Tim Horton's is still better than Starbucks) :P

If Rathbone ever gets to his 3rd-4th year of NCAA status and will be an NHL player I can't see him shunning the Canucks. He has the qualities that suggest he is loyal to his family and team. Plus the Canucks will make sure him and his family feel right at home.

Yet, here on CDC, anytime we have a decent NCAA prospect that reaches their 3rd year (ie, Schneider, Demko, Gaudette, etc), the sky is falling mentality immediately overtakes these forums.

Personally, so long as he doesn't turn into one of our ex-4th round D prospect who also attended high school and then a colorful career at Harvard (ie, academic scandal, injuries, subsequent decision to test free agency after completion of senior season which prompted Benning to trade him for a 7th (Tate Olson)), I would consider it a win, since the likelihood of 4th round picks making the NHL from this organization are so rare.  Right now, as it stands, it looks like Benning, Brackett and co. may have found a gem; hopefully, over time, this gem may be recognized as a diamond, as opposed to a cubic zirconia.  ::D

If Washington state IT systems worker Pamela Bowerman has her way, Seattle's potential new NHL hockey franchise team won't ever be called the Seattle Sockeyes.

That's because the Seattle Sockeyes hockey team already exists — that is, in Bowerman's own bestselling world of romance novels that are so steamy they'd melt the ice at any hockey rink.

Bowerman, who uses the pen name "Jami Davenport" for her fiction, has filed an application with the U.S Patent and Trademark Office to become the registered owner of the Seattle Sockeyes hockey name.

    image.png.6f4bed1c8aefafe5ad987cdc63e4ec34.png

The writer filed her application on Dec. 21, a few weeks after the NHL invited Seattle's Oak View Group to make a pitch for an NHL expansion franchise.

Bowerman is the second person in the state of Washington to file a trademark application to protect a potential professional hockey team name.

A Microsoft attorney also has moved to trademark the "Seattle Steelheads," another of several names being bandied about as a possible moniker for the region's new NHL hockey franchise.

Attorney Craig Farris filed an application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to trademark the name on Dec. 12, public records show.

Bowerman has written a dozen Seattle Sockeyes romance novels with muscular and ruggedly handsome hockey players from Detroit, Minneapolis, Russia, Sweden and even Montreal.

Her books have titles including "Penalty Play," "Shot on Goal," and "Crashing the Net." They're part of her "Game On" series. She also writes other sports romances.

"Hockey romance books are really, really hot," Bowerman said. "I enjoy doing it. I'm making six figures and I'm retiring early from my state job to focus on writing full time."

The summary of the plot line of one of Bowerman's recent novels, "Skating on Thin Ice," might seem familiar to residents of the Puget Sound region.

It involves "a billionaire" who seeks to bring hockey to Seattle and how his "mission clashes with his passion for the woman who holds his heart."

In an interview from her home in Shelton, Bowerman emphasized she's a big hockey fan who truly wants the NHL to come to Seattle.

Hockey enthusiasts have suggested the Sockeyes as one among several names for the new franchise.

Bowerman insists her trademark move is merely a defensive one.

"I'd been talking to a trademark attorney, who is a friend of mine, and she said to me, 'Get a trademark,' " Bowerman said. "I did it to protect myself. I was worried that if they used that name that I might have to go back into all my books and change the name, which would be costly and which I did not want to do at this point."

Her application shows Bowerman has been using the Seattle Sockeyes fictional pro hockey team name in her writing since at least April 2014.

I wonder if the Oakview Group was aware of this when they moved forward with their domain name registration paperwork.  Maybe they could offer boxed sets of the books for everyone at the home opener   image.png.131e55c0eb6cf9e120e44221f6a3ff3b.png

Sorry if you felt singled out....I just get so frustrated with people who overly criticize these kids while they are clearly still developing and MOST currently in the stable are showing excellent development.   Of course he makes mistakes and of course he will all through his career - every player does - and I don't think anyone should defend him when he does or say he is immune to bone headedness or bad games.   I just think that none of these prospects are "lazy" or they simply wouldn't be in the discussion for NHL spots.   Some get frozen into inaction from their fear of mistakes, some get confused on where to be at times but more often than not, NOT doing something is the best move on the ice and in particular for a Dman.   What impresses me the most about OJ, a player I have seen since he was 15, is that he is almost never out of position.   For a guy who rushes up the ice and joins the offense quite a bit, I can count in my head and still have some of my ten fingers left the number of times I have seen him give up an odd man rush due to a poor decision on coverage and that is in seeing him play likely a combined 50 to 80 times over the past four-five years.

The thing I have with OJ is admittedly a bit biased I have, as above, know about him for a long while and also have people in my circle that are associated with London so have another tie-in there.   The kid oozes leadership - to the point where he took on the Finnish Federation after last year's tourney and essentially found himself without a letter on his sweater or a spot in the first pairing in spite of being their best Dman by quite a margin this tournament and has also had a great first professional season.

I'm not sure how Palmu will get a shot. Future trade to make room? Or perennial spark plug for Utica?

I assume a few of the players listed, particularly the bolded, likely will not be on the team through a combination of being traded or not showing enough to make the team (à la Grenier, Friesen, Cannata, etc).
