I had know a guy who lives in Vancouver that was telling me how much excitement Bure brought to games and that he could literally bring him out of his seat.   He said the only other "star" player in Vancouver who did that was Messier - he said Messier would get him out of his seat, up the stairs and all the way to his car to drive home during the second period more nights than not.   He says those were his darkest days as a Canuck fan.

I was around during Bure's years and his rookie season, and yes every time he touched the puck people would start leaning forward, no joke..his rookie year, there were 6000 people trying to get into training camp games. He was something. If this kid can bring that level of excitement, albeit in a different way, well we will be very lucky fans to have gone from Linden, to Bure, to Nazzy, to the twins, and "hopefully' EP and Boeser with the leadership of Bo.

I agree I cannot see Tavares coming to Vancouver...There will be several teams after him..

    1. NYI 2. Sharks 3. Toronto

Best fit would be the Sharks.....

He could have Kane for his winger...

Kane - Tavares...Sharks will have the money....

Putting my money on NYI or Sharks, third choice Toronto..They could also sign Thorton to home town discount,

would make Thorton excited if they signed Taveras..

    Big Joe is a UFA

Toronto won't have the cap room. They have Matthews coming up, Nylander, Marner to take care of, unless they move one, which they could. I could see SJ making a big run at him, and given their competitiveness, if they sign Kane, it would guarantee he's on a cup contender for years.

My bet is SJ or back to the Isles and don't count out the Rangers, they are right next door!

  3. I love the excitement of fans here but a few observations

    - EP is not Gretz or Mario! lol...I know you didn't mean it but he's not that level, but;

    - He is clearly a player who has the potential (key word potential) to be a game breaker. I think people do often have a hard time believing the Canucks have a player that has broken records of Peter Forsberg, the twins, Kent Nilsson, all who were unbelievable players. Sometimes, I think its Canucks fan's mentality to either get too high, or go the other way and say, well we don't get that lucky so he can't be that good.

The point is, let's also let the kid develop and not panic if he doesn't come in and score 90 pts as a rookie, or is in the AHL etc. Clearly we have a gem, let's let the smart hockey minds we have ensure he's developed well enough to find his ceiling. Even if that takes some time, we will all be happy to watch a decade or more of his skill.

Archie won't get a 2 year deal but I am more than alright for a 1 year 1 way. He did not play enough games for anything more. A 1 way would be the bonus. He puts in a season playing like he did and he gets a better deal or could walk as a UFA.

They may “reward” him as a sign of the culture they want. Beiga is a perfect comp and he got two years and a very similar story, value add and contribution to the team. And green really likes him. Given his age I will be surprised if the Canucks don’t give him 2 years given the dues he’s paid to get to the NHL level. He’s a leader, tough (can take Dorset’s role), helps provide the “safe environment” for the kids and has shown he wants it over his years in the AHL. Who takes on Dorset’s role otherwise? No one

Maybe the guy gave him the wrong vibe or looked like a desperate canuckarmy drone? I'm good with NT88 picking his spots.

Give him space and let him decide.. morons tweeting at him or hack journalists desperate for tweets aren't going to do any good.

Exactly, and maybe he just doesn't like dealing with media in english? He seemed to have that issue when here, and its not like anyone likes the vancouver hockey media either. Not to mention, he's under contract to a KHL team, probably doesn't want to be seen as not a team guy, is focused on the worlds, and probably (almost certainly) hasn't even decided with his family yet, which is why he left. In all reality, its a mature and wise thing to do to effectively say 'no comment' right now

  6. Annihalation 2 out of 10 - not sure what the hype was about -  I love pretty much all genres of movies, especially Sci Fi and I thought it sucked big ones

Conspiracy 10 out of 10 - Most will not have heard of this, Kenneth Branagh, about the meeting in Wannsee in 1942 with senior Nazis discussing the "Jewish Question" - frightening recreation of the evils of mankind and how sick humans can be. It is worth the watch as a film given them writing and acting, and most takes place in one room, so its almost like theater, but it also is a very important historical lesson that all should never forget, such that we as human beings never allow such a thing to ever happen again.

12 Strong - 4.5 out of 10 - Meh, boring and not even rah rah America

Maze Runner Death Cure 4.5 out of 10 - Another Meh - first few were surprisingly interesting, this one rode coattails and was pointless. Was made for the sake of it not as a strong stand alone film. Just the same idea, no real plot, action was boring and no suspense.

I think envision Bo to be our version of Toews. A very well rounded player who constantly puts up good numbers, while being a defensive threat. I think fans envision the first line C as the offensive motor of a team, which isn't always the case.

also @JamesB I was so dead set on Dubois... I had never had my heart broken in a draft before the jackets took that kid from us. I wanted him in a bad way to be a Canuck

Bergeron's best seasons were his second and third with 73 and 70 pts, and since hasn't broken 70. Bo was prorated on pace for 60+ this year. If he can play like Bergeron, I'd say that's pretty fine number one no? And he has that ability. He's great in the circle, should be able to get 60+ consistently, and if he continues his stellar defensive play, maybe he'll be in the Selke talk one day too!

Half the stuff the twins did would be the all the stuff one of the twins did. That would indeed be a great career.

And to those who think the twins didnt have value as 'mentors' - there it is.

Can we win the Cup with Bo playing the number one center role?  I think we can, but we need a guy to compliment him.  Kind of like Krije (sp?) and Bergeron, and Kopitar and Carter.

Indeed,  and that seems to be the model JB is building, four lines you roll, and three that are almost interchangeable - this seems to be the new method in the NHL. Balance wins

Karlsson is not the same calibre as Doughty?

Honestly, if we can get Karlsson, I think we are winning the cup soon. He outscored the next best defenceman by like 70 points in the last 4 seasons and that second best man played one full season as a winger before focussing on defence.

Doughty is all around player sure but one can easily make the case that Karlsson's caliber is one notch above that of Doughty.

Karlson is a great offensive dman, he is not the same class as Doughty defensively.

Yes I’d take a big, physical, better dman who gets 50-60 points  over a more primarily offensive dman. This is not to suggest karlson is not world class, just that I like all around dmen better and feel Doughtys overall value to a team is higher because of his shut down ability combined with his offensive skills.

I agree that MacEwen has a shot. The Canucks will want someone to take on the "physical tough guy" role that Dorsett held until he was forced to retire. I think Archie has the inside track for that spot. He certainly did well in Canucks' late surge this season. But he has not been re-signed yet and it is possible that MacEwen gets that spot instead.

But he is still a long shot. However, he has already outperformed the expectations of some, including Jeremy Davis at the Canucks Army, who was very critical when MacEwen was signed last year: See https://canucksarmy.com/2017/03/04/canucks-throw-away-contract-on-chl-free-agent-zack-macewen/..

Davis revised his opinion recently. See https://canucksarmy.com/2018/01/19/zack-macewen-is-better-than-i-thought-he-would-be/

Davis did a good job in both articles. Using data to generate expected performance for players is worthwhile, but there is always a fair amount of variance left over and some guys beat the odds. MacEwen beat the odds last year but he will have to do it to an even greater extent this year to make the Canucks.

It is hard to see how both Archie and MacEwen could make the team, given the competition for forward spots.

As for Chatfield, I only seem him the mix if Tanev is traded, which I think would be a mistake. Right now the depth on the right side of Tanev, Stecher, Gudranson and Biega looks pretty solid and the Canucks could sign a UFA as well. But there is always the possibility of injury.

You re-sign Archie for 2 years one way as he's earned it over years in Utica. That takes him to 29, then you bring in MacEwen at 23 years old after a few years in the minors where he's hopefully built on this year, learned to play an even better 2 way game, etc...Nothing wrong with that And if Archie still has his legs, he's a solid depth guy to have around like Biega, especially come playoff time.

Oh yeah, but I’m sure he’s ready for it. And he’ll politely answer repeated questions about his weight at camp. But he also has that fire inside him and he might just speak his mind and have a pretty savage reply ready for the 20th NA reporter who asks him if he’s heavy enough to compete. I hope so.

He’s like most Scandinavians. Very cool and patient. But also doesn’t suffer fools too easily. Eventually enough’s enough and the Viking blood boils. Takes a lot to go over the edge, but when it happens, look out.

I hope its botchford he goes off on, or pratt, or both

Not going to argue, the guy's a HELL of a player. But he's also kinda douchey too (not that that would stop me from cheering for him should he don the blue and green in a another 1.4'ish years).

    He's also not Swedish

He's douchey because he's got an edge/swagger and he knows he can dominate other players- we could use some of that our team...

Doughty, Karlsson, OEL, McDonagh, Ellis, Myers... got to think a couple of those guys make it to UFA and we'll have all sorts of cap space B)

Agreed. My preference would be for Doughty though. He has won 2 cups, is one of the best if not the best all around dman in the game, he would be a terrific tutor for all the young dmen we have. I love Karlson, and many of the others but they are not the same calibre in my view, and Karlson, will likely get paid more (marginally, but more) given his point totals. Doughty is just so solid...a perfect dman in my view.

Do we need a big time Dman to QB our Power Play if EP 40 can do it from the half boards?

Yes because you need the threat from the point, the shot and just the movement. With EP and Boeser on each half boards you have our version of Backstrom and Ovie on each side, now you need the Carlson, hopefully Juolevi or this years draft pick becomes that guy. Joulovi has the smarts, he showed it at the WJC and in Junior, so not too worried.

    No Hughes/Boqvist/Dobson/Bouchard?:P

    (I also wouldn't be surprised if Edler's still here in 2 years  )

Have that player as depth (2018 draft pick!), and I could see Edler being here on the bottom pairing as well

Regardless, in a few years, if we get Try back and look to be competitive, going hard after Doughty would be a smart move as our D would be incredible - hard part is we'd need to be a team seen by doughty as able to fight for a cup...

  18. I can't wait till we get the big guy back...only two years left on his contract, and it fits perfectly with our young team - in 2 years - hopefully this is our line up

    Goldobin Bo Boeser

Virtanen (put him back on his offwing where he scored in junior) Petterson Dhalen

    Baer /Leipsic Gaudette Lind

    Gadjovich Sutter Jasek

    Gaunce

    Doughty (ufa :))  Tanev

    Juolevi Gudbranson

    Tryamkin , Stecher

Depth - Brisbois, Sautner, 2018 Draft pick

    Demko

Damn that would be one fine defensive core, probably the best canucks group ever. Add in a top 6 UFA winger and the cup cometh

Someone did a redraft, many on CDC complained Hishcier still went higher than Pettersson. I agreed because of the elite game breaking speed of Hischier. Its a weapon.

But I remain in staunch disagreement on agility and speed in tight.  The guy is better in tight spaces than almost anyone I have seen. Agree to disagree.

I would  agree and Petterson a still fast. Straight line speed is actually over rated. The game is more about stops and starts, agility in tight spaces and your first 3 steps. Our boy is elite in all those areas.

I wonder if he will be Sutter's weight -190 lbs or Mikael Samuelsson's weight - 215 lbs, when he grows into his 6'2" body.

The hockey fans who jumped off the bandwagon are going to be surprised in a year or two.

His pictures from this year already show he’s starting to look like a man physically vs a boy. He’s lean but has a lot of muscle. Last year he was skinny. Give him another offseason and if he comes into camp 180-185 he’ll be fine to play in the nhl- then it comes down to his skill and ability to handle the grind not his weight.

That being said, a year or two to gain man strength couldn’t hurt him in the AHL

Penalties and a very chippy 3-2 game. They were spamming Nyquist/Backlund a lot and added Kempe near the end.

Though he was brutal tonight, even on the PP. Probably just an off game, and him playing against a much more constructed team then he's used to playing.

I didn’t watch the game but here’s my take based on comments

First, many are now seeing why he may need a year in the AHL to aclimate to bigger faster players. These are the best of the rest in the world so he’s getting a higher level of competition now than he’s used to. That means he needs to adjust his game and also get bigger and stronger.

Second, it’s one game so take it with a grain of salt.

Third, if he does need a year or two in the AHL many here will finally learn that players needing more time to develop doesn’t mean he’s a bust (aka Juolevi, Jake, etc).

Finally, this experience will be nothing but beneficial for him if he does struggle a bit. It’s good for him to learn now, that it’s going to be a lot harder than he experienced in Europe, when he comes over to North America. A little wake up call before next year will only add to his motivation to be prepared!
