The Canucks are serious about Dahlen's development.  That's why he wasn't called up.  They want continuity in the process which means playing a lot and in all situations.  When he is called up, they want him to play and to stay.  This is why temporary call ups are players like Archibald and Gaunce.  They don't want their top prospects coming up to sit in the pressbox and maybe not play for a week or so

Yes, really nice to see proper development of the prospects a la Detroit.

I haven't seen Dahlen play in Utica, but my feeling is that apart from the new surroundings, smaller ice etc. he also isn't a player that drives the play on his own. I can imagine that being a problem in Utica where the talent isn't always there to get him the puck. He's not a perimeter player though, and has proven himself to be clutch around the net, so I think it will come for him once he gains a little experience and confidence and gets stronger and faster. Still hope he turns into a top 6 winger.

  2. Also that double minor for high-sticking he got by mistake against Pittsburgh will screw up his stats since he hasn’t played that many games yet. But he still needs to be effective without putting his team in the pk so agree on that.

  3. There was this one time last game where Jake came down the left and tried cutting to the inside of the defender going straight for the net. It didn’t succeed - although I thought it should’ve been a tripping call - but Ibrealky hope to see more of that instead of perimeter outside shots. Power your way to the net Jake and good things will happen.

I just listened to the interview. The last question was one of the reasons why the media in this City needs a shakeup. "doesn't this make you want to go home"? Elias response was priceless, he turned away. Who was the dumbas* that asked that one? I don't recognize the voice.

Yeah he looked really pissed and for good reason too

A little disappointed Zack didn't get the call to see what he can do. Had a decent preseason and a great start to this year so it would have been fun and good for him to see some time at the NHL  level.

Nice problem to have though with deserving players waiting for their chance... Mac’s time will come if he continues to perform

Temper your expectations with Gadjovich.... he’s a 19 year old playing on a crowded AHL roster. Just because he’s not slotted in the lineup every game doesn’t mean he’s tracking more to a career in the AHL.

Way too early too tell is my opinion. Mac looks like he’s ready now but that’s in the minors on a hot streak probably. The major’s a different level. Gadj can make the step in 2020 and be ready for prime time in 2021 when we’re contending...

    - Edler is one of only 11 Canuck defensemen to ever win a face-off. In fact, Edler is 2nd all-time among Canucks with 8 face-off wins on 19 attempts for a face-off percentage of 42.1%, giving him a face-off percentage just 0.2 percentage points below Connor McDavid's career average of 42.3%.

WTF, how and why did he ever take 19 faceoffs?!

Why does Edler get as much 5v5 ice time as Tanev even though he's slow?

Because he's still decent at defending even though he's pretty slow and has 10 years of NHL experience. Also he's decent offensively and most important he's the best option we have. There isnt a better left defender to take those minutes.

How does this relate to Juolevi? Personally I see his defensive abilities being very similar to the Edler we have now. Smart, strong and good enough puck skills to make a good breakout pass yet still a little to slow to be elite defensively.

Yeah, but if you accept that OJ is not Burns or Erik Karlsson etc and that he will be better than Edler offensively and in time about equal defensively than that's one hell of a defender and a #2 D on any team. Lets hope for that.

My evaluation is that Edler is the more rounded player, but that Tanev is by far the better defensive player, he is a lifetime +34 and Edler a lifetime -48.  +/- may not mean much in the short run, but in the long haul it is telling - particularly when defensively they play similar roles.  I really don't see Edler as a 2 on a contender, whereas Tanev could be if he is used to support a number one who is really offensive minded.  But that's all just judgement, and it could go many ways depending on the fit with the team's needs.

Not saying you are wrong, I agree that +/- says something in the long run and Tanev is really a stud defensively. Though, take into account the games played the last 2-3 seasons and the heavy lifting Edler's done when Tanev's been injured and it's not as crystal clear. And of course, what it comes down to is who you'd choose for a cup run. As a role player Tanev's one of the best in the league defensively, but for most teams and seasons I'd still choose Edler simply because he's the better player.

Because Edler gets 1st pairing PP minutes and is much better offensively

Yep, judging from last game where no PP time and Tanev got 30 secs more ice time you are right. Stll, if Edler's just slow and they get the same ice time 5 vs 5, why is that? And I'd still say Edler's more trusted on 5 vs 5 althought that of course remains to be seen throughout the season

Edler plays most of every power play, for one significant thing, Tanev pretty much zero.  They both are significant penalty killers and shot blockers.  Edler is much more robust and able to handle heavy traffic than Tanev - so matches against heavy forwards may tilt in Edler's favor.  Also, look at team structure: on the right side we have Tanev, Stetcher, and Gudbranson - lately we have Edler, Pouliot and Hutton on the left.  How much are you going to want to play Pouliot and Hutton on the PK?  At least for now.  That means that the load on the right side is more balanced than on the left side.  If Hutton and Pouliot keep improving, that may change.

Nah, I agree that I'd take Stetcher and Guddy over Pouliot and Hutton and that Edler's more robust, but mainly he's just a better player, like a #2-3 d on a contender whereas Tanev's a #3-4 IMHO.

I agree with you. I watched a lot of Juolevi last year and caught most of 3 games of Utica this year and while Juolevi has some elite attributes as a defender, passing and his defensive IQ his weakness is his foot speed. He has a a really slow first few steps that don't allow him to close gaps quicky or defend well when the play is scrambley.

When the play is structured he always make excellent reads and is excellent at breaking up plays through the neutral zone but 1v1 or in scrambled play he can be prone to giving up quality chances against. Its like watching Tanev vs Edler out there. Watch how fast Tanev moves his feet to get into position and close gaps defensively vs Edler who kinda prods along out there. Edler does a decent enough job out there though so Juolevi will be able to as well but I just have a hard time picturing Juolevi ever being a high end defender with his slow feet.

Those are definitely valid points and concerns - but one question, why do you think every canucks coach play Edler 5 mins more per game vs Tanev?

Olli Juolevi notched his first North American professional goal but on the night it was a game that he would rather forget.  The pairing of Chatfield - Juolevi struggled all night in the defensive zone and Olli was victimized too many times by weak passes that were either picked off or immediately put the receiver of the pass in a bad position.

In general I have been impressed with Juolevi so far this season but last night wan't one of them.

Still very happy to hear how highly Ryan Johnson thinks of Ollis performance overall. If he can be a 2-3 D for years and get the puck on the blade for Brock and  EP it’ll make a big difference for the rebuild.

  14. Nice game winner but still didn’t think he played a very good game. Seems off and a little late in to most situations, really feel it’s Horvat and Baertschi driving that line and that Brock’s a bit of a drag on them.

But its nice to see the points starting to pile up anyway, maybe he gets going as his confidence grows.

That still doesn't likely equal Granlund being waived and/or actually playing in Utica. And certainly not this fall.

Granlund is a pro already and hard to tell if he had a down year offensively before injury or was just brilliant in a defensive shutdown role. Maybe both?

However, unlike Goldy and several other forward prospects there is nothing to gain for him in the farm, so in my opinion he wouldn’t have been resigned - even on a one year show me type of deal - at all if management didn’t believe in him.

But of course, if he doesn’t prove he’s worth a spot, sure he should be waived, it’s just not very likely since he can contribute on both offense and defense up and down the lineup.

  16. Like someone mentioned Baer would look really good on a contender’s third line. Maybe with the nucks in due time...

Suppose both Baer and Roussel are LW but would like to see them on a line with EP playing C.

Goldy's game reminds me a bit of William Karlsson with Vegas.   Interesting that Karlsson bumped around a bit and prior to this last year hitting 40 plus goals, he had 18 total NHL goals in over 180 NHL games.  It took him until the season he turned 25.

Goldy is 22 and turns 23 this season and has 12 NHL goals over 61 games so far....

Goldy needs to show him belongs but it wouldn't shock me to see him break out.

Not saying you are wrong but Karlsson earned his spot with Torts and Columbus as a defensive forward before he went to Vegas. Somehow I don’t see Goldy doing that ;-)

    But agree on Goldys potential.
