This is a great deal. I wasn't really feeling Detroit's offseason moves so far, but this was a great trade and a really solid contract.
Dude has shown he can score goals and is only 25. Yeah a little hot and cold, but that is an area he could easily improve on still as he grows.

I don't mind this lineup and it's likely what it's going to be but by gosh that top six doesn't have a ton of size or sandpaper to it except for Miller to it. Enough offense there and and an improved defense should get them close to a playoff spot. However, even if they sneaked into the playoffs they'd get physically worn down and bounced easily in the first round.
Yeah I don't disagree with you about the lack of physicality in our forward group. It does mean they would likely struggle in the playoffs.
I think that could be okay though. Often it seems like young teams have that issue. I think it could be viewed as part of the process. The young players will toughen up being in those situations (even when it means losing) and as the team gets better each year we can look to make lineup changes and bring in maybe a tougher winger when the time is right.
One area they need to not fail is scoring. There is a lot of young talent here and they need to step up. A couple prospects also need to take a step this year.

Mikey - Petey - Kuz
Beau - Miller - Boes
Pearson - Blueger - Hog
Joshua - Aman - PDGHughes - Cole
Soucy - Hronek
Hirose - Meyers
Demko
Martin
Extras
Forwards - Stud / Dries
Defense - Brise / Irwin
I think this is decently likely (unless I'm forgetting someone). I think Garland will be the winger they move out and despite trying to move Meyers in the end I am not sure if a deal will surface before the season begins to get him out (try again at the deadline).
If it is - then overall I think the team looks okay and should be battling for one of the final playoff spots. Our D should be more stable then last year and combined with new coaching that will hopefully be the biggest improvement. Consistency from the top 6 will be big. Bottom 6 looks a little weak, but if one or two of the younger guys take a step then it could be fine.

Agree with everyone else excited about him. Solid first season in Abby, plays center and is a 2 way forward.
Would be happy for him if he made the big team this year, but no issue for me if he spends another season in Abby centering in the top 6, helping lead that team to a deeper playoff run.
-
I'd love to grab Zadina for a 1 year deal and see how he does in our bottom 6, but first we absolutely need to move out 1-2 forwards (wingers).
Garland is likely the best target to move. Maybe even Beau. Unlikely anyone takes Pearson. Boeser I think you keep and give him another shot. I still would rather not give up on Hoglander or Podz.
-
I actually think this will be an okay place for the leafs to be in. He'll resign with them at a price they are fine with or he'll get traded for a good haul and now they have cap free.
Nylander is good, but everyone looking at their core forwards felt like that is 1 too many high paid players. JT is likely the guy you'd like to move, but he would be the hardest to get out of.
Nylander is likely close to 10 million in a world where the cap is about to jump up. But Toronto will push for something around 8.5-9.5 I think and if it doesn't work they can trade him, clear up a bunch of cap, get back picks/prospects and use that money to resign Bertuzzi AND add another solid piece to their group.
Overall not the worst place to be in.

I'd love for this signing to get done this offseason, but honestly could see no point on Petey's end for rushing it.
But yeah I'm in the camp of pretty much 12ish million or less give him 8 years and let's get it done. (Of course anything around 10 is amazing and I'd be stoked)

how do you sign 2 players that are under contract with another team?
Sorry also yes Yamo is gone to Seattle for 1.5/1 year I believe.
I think the Zadina part might be tied to rumor of a buyout in Detroit.
-
Yamamoto I'm less interested in since we seem to have solid small forwards already and are trying to move 1 out (Garland).
I'd definitely sign Zadina though, maybe a 2 year million or less per kinda deal. Unlikely to be a 3rd liner on our team, but why not send him down to Abby and give him a year regaining his confidence and getting used to our system. He's young with what was a super high ceiling until his development stalled. No harm in trying him out.
-
Very strange to me a team like Chicago or Buffalo didn't take him. Sure has a bit of a cap hit, but a few bottom teams have a ton of space still and sometimes feels like they would rather just have it be there.
I guess leaves them open for other moves during the season

With the Orlov signing, CAR back end looking awfully crowded... Pesce would sure look good in that hole....
That would be great if we could grab him and resign. I wonder if they have any interest in Garland +

Seems like a great pick by all accounts. Ranked quite highly by some, so glad to see us able to nab him.

This isn’t against you. And it’s not for or against Mynio but that highlight reel is incredibly “meh” haha
Random shots that happened to find their way in the net.
Like the pick a lot and glad he is so highly regarded for his defensive play already.
But also hahah so true about the highlight reel being meh. Why can't for non-offensive players they pull highlights of other things they bring like hitting, speed or defense.
-
I'd definitely sign Cal to a 1-2 year deal on the cheaper side. Fits what we're looking for, no cost to acquire and if it doesn't work out not a big deal.
-
I can see us just running it out with Meyers as our 3rd pair RD for 1 more year. If we can move him for a 4th round pick or less then sure, but I feel like it would more likely cost a 2nd (based on the Islanders/Chicago trade today) and I am tired of giving away picks.
I would like Van to still offer Schenn a contract. Maybe 3 years at 1.5 per. Full NTC (still able to move down to Abby if needed) and kinda hint at him joining the organization in a training capacity/player development side if he is interested when the career is over.

What about Nicolas Roy out of Vegas? 6'4 Right handed Center. With good cap and term. 26 years old. Vegas needs cap space... can we make something happen there?
Or in my other post, Micheal McLeod out of New Jersey.
Why is nobody saying anything about these guys?
I think most agree with you on those targets. Main issue is they are likely highly sought after pieces by a lot of teams and the teams they are currently on probably really want to keep them (even if it won't be possible in the end due to cap).

I don't think Minny would dump him for a random piece of our depth. I think they let Dumba walk.
Likely they'll try to resign him to some sort of bridge deal. Maybe 2 x 2 or a little more money, but doubt it'll be much more then that. Looks like he did decent in his first full season. Over 30 point pace.
Maybe they'd trade for something like Beau (50% retained). But in general their cap situation will be tight just like Van so a deal could be tough. RHD are a premium in the league lately.

And what is wrong with Lindholm being their primary first line centre? He's cheap and still has two years left. Why on earth would they dump that for someone OLDER and MORE EXPENSIVE??
Only 1 year left and is a UFA. Going to need an extension and talks out of Calgary are some players don't plan to resign. Miller gives them a top 6 center back with term locked in.
I'd only say yes on Vancouver's end if they are able to speak with Lindholm and work out an extension first. I also would only want to pay him around $7 million or less.
To be honest likely not the right target for Vancouver anyway. Would prefer someone a couple years younger at least.
-
I'd give him 4.5 million (tops) or less for 5 years (max) or less.
Unlikely he'll take that deal though cause I think someone will pay him 5+ million for 5-6 years. Chicago maybe to start building a better foundation around Bedard. -
I'm fine with us keeping Brock for another year (or up to the deadline). He started to look better at the end of last year and I think he genuinely wants to stay in Van. All that plus his trade value would be down right now, so I think moving a guy like Garland (even if not for much) is the better option.
Brock will either work out and find that scoring touch again (in which case we'll resign him long term or trade for value) or the cap hit will clear off in the short term.
Mik coming back is also exciting. A little overpaid most likely, but a two way winger, that kills penalties, can score around 20 goals and has speed to spare is alright with me.
-
I think they likely keep Miller.
However, I would be open to the right trade for him. I think Carolina is a great partner, because they are clearly a playoff team with cap space, but was missing some offense and aggression this past run.
To Car:
JT Miller
Rathbone
To Van:
Kotkaniemi
2023 1st round pick
Morrow or Heimosalmi
Carolina gets best player by far. A point per game center/winger who thrives on the PP. They also get Rathbone back as an older mid range prospect with some offensive upside.
Vancouver gets a young center signed long term. He'll either play 2C or 3C depending on his ability. They also get a late 1st in this draft and a defensive prospect.
I think this deal is fair. However, if Carolina believe KK is a very promising top 6 center then they may say no. My thoughts are though lookin at that team they are definitely in a win now situation and planning for 2-3 years away might be risky.

I don’t see why I would. They wouldn’t make all these sacrifices if they didn’t want to make the playoffs next year.
Whether or not they will I don’t know, but if they don’t it will be unacceptable to me given what they’ve given up to try to improve the team and compete in the short term.
Yeah I agree they want to make the playoffs, totally.
But saying anything short of that feels like you're setting yourself up for disappointment. I want the team to be great too, but they have literally added nothing. Today they cleared some cap which is okay (gonna be feeling it for a while still), but they also added a new hole with the 2LD position now vacant.

I've said all along, only way he gets bought out, is if management thinks his ankle is going to be a major/lingering issue moving forward. Guess I got my answer.
So you think it is really injury related that ended up helping them make the call on this?

With the sacrifices they have made my expectations are for them to make the playoffs next year.
There are no exceptions or excuses anymore.
If they don’t then the sacrifices were all for nothing which is unacceptable.
Umm maybe readjust your expectations of this team.
Playoffs would be great I agree, but there are so many holes in our roster and nothing has been added yet, so we'll need to wait and see.
Our D alone now has a new hole at 2 LD.
So main areas to still sort out with 6.4 million in cap space:
- 1 top 4 RD
- 1 top 4 LD
- 1 3C
- Depth
No clue what their plan is on pulling this off. I'm glad we don't have to dump a winger anymore with the same urgency. God I hope Schenn signs back here for 1.5 or less.

[Signing] Red Wings re-sign Alex DeBrincat
in Trades, Rumours, Signings

Don't get me wrong I hope Hronek is amazing and resigns with us for a decently priced long term deal. We haven't really seen much of him yet, so next season will be the real test to see how he does.
lol but Debrincat is still solid and Detroit has some good young players. I think losing Bertuzzi was a mistake and I may have gone one more year or tanking if I was them, but none of that changes the fact that the trade and signing are good.
