Gillis did little to help with the rebuild because he couldn't draft worth a damn. Even if he had these great ideas, he couldn't execute the way he wanted.

We should not be standing pat. We are five points or so out of a playoff spot. This team is obviously not one or two pieces away from being a playoff contender.

It's just hypocritical of people to point out that there's a "change" in philosophy when the core is still Benning's, and we are not looking to the future. We are trying to make the playoffs, and this makes us no different than the criticism that Benning has faced throughout his tenure.

The problem with Gillis was he would always trade 2nd and some 3rd for depth at the trade deadline. The kicker was they played very little.

  2. I have read the comments, and believe that some are focused too.much on the here and now. Since Nov. I have stated we are in cap trouble, with bb, jtm, bh in line for raises we can't  budget. We need speed on the wings and mobility on defence. Why are we not trying to create space and picks at the best time.

Ps, I have given up hope of seeing a cup in my lifetime.

Jeeez. Our defense just continues to be decimated. Just in time for HNIC against the Leafs too, no less.

It’s actually a bit of a miracle that the team has continued to win with all the losses on the backend. That’s a testament to Boudreau and his staff’s strategy, and getting the players to buy in.

Make the defence unit on both sides about equal????

Opinion on direction of the team really depends on where you think the team is at.

I still see this as a promising core, with the most important pieces on the right side of 25. Defence needs some serious tinkering and I’d be fine with management doing what they can to balance the roster.

I think we could use a draft with a full battery of picks for the prospect pool but I also see the need to address the roster.  IMO we’d be best served to shuffle a forward or two out to address the blue line.

Taking things slow isn’t really an option - this core needs to be kick started and window needs to be opened ASAP.

The problem is 1&2 line.players have had poor season to this point, diminished trade value.

It's hard to know exactly what direction they'll take with the team, especially considering we don't even know who the GM is yet.

To be honest, I don't know what direction they should take with the team either. A month ago I was all for blowing the whole thing up and starting another rebuild, but seeing the huge difference that the coaching change has made has given me cause to reconsider going scorched earth.

What I do think is that, regardless of when the new GM is hired, no major changes will happen this season. I believe the rest of this season will be mainly used to asses what we have. I also don't think we'll be trading our first rd pick either. We've been without one two years in a row.

However, I do think a pretty significant trade is on the horizon in the offseason. Obviously for cap reasons, but also because I believe that whoever is calling the shots is going to come to the conclusion that the defence needs some major work.

So overall, I don't think any major trades are coming until the offseason, and when it does happen, it will be a hockey trade. One of our forwards for a defenseman, with some spare change going one or both ways.

I would add 1 more option, use the trade deadline to free up some cap space, ie trade BB for draft picks

I'm not old enough to have watched him.

All I know is that I met him in the press box at a game and shook his hand.

I'm an above average sized dude but his hand was like a bear paw and his handshake was so firm it almost broke my arm off.

Just based on that interaction, I'm comfortable with this move.

Steamer was the leader of NW bruins, if we had their work ethics and play physical , we're in the playoffs

So this ass backwards team will hire a coach and not let new President and GM hire the guy they want?

There has to be more to this like maybe they've hired the GM and he's agreed. But still, why is the team doing it this way?  Does Aquaman actually think he can save the season?

I don't get it if this is true.

This is a move by a poor organization. A poho 1st then gm, assess needs then a coach.

What do you mean Gillis wasn't meant to draft a new core as if its not his duty?

You need to know when the time is up for the core as a GM and make trades to invest in the future.

That's literally what makes a good GM is knowing when to propose a larger change with the team because the formula isn't working anymore.

The two consecutive first round exits should've been an eye-opener.

Kesler was literally begging to leave and probably could've fetched more in terms of a higher pick/propects had he been traded even a year earlier when Gillis was in charge.

I'm not saying he should sell off then entire core but he could've made some smart moves and taken advantage of it. He made the Schneider/Horvat trade but he realized he should be making those types of bold moves too late in his tenure.

He could've made the necessary transactions when players were in high demand to fetch more picks in higher positions but he stuck to the same old stale formula. That's entirely his fault.

My memory was the Sedins, could not trade them at $14M cap hit, therefore not finishing low enough for impact players.

Okay, I get everyone saying fire Benning and Greene, but when do the players have to be responsible for their own *&^* actions? Seriously 20 PP goals they've let in. When you know your PK sucks, stay out of the darn box. Those penalties tonight were disgusting. Just undisciplined and lazy and totally uncalled for. These are penalties they know not to take. 3 penalties in 2 minutes but yeah let's fire Benning.  The boys can't hit the broad side of a barn. Petterson has taken 61 shots towards the net this yet and hit the net 6 times. Hoaglander 59 shots only hit the net 8 times. Horvat 64 shots this year and only hit the net 10 times. Now I know a lot of these shots get blocked but my gosh these are bad stats and they need to hit the damn net and shoot! You can't win a game if you only take 15 shots on net. All I'm saying is this isn't Benning and Greene's fault, the players are lazy and responsible for their own game play and taking bad penalties. Boeser, Horvat, Petey, Hughes, Miller, these guys can score we know they can, but they aren't even hitting the net now. That's just sad.

Pk are part of the game. If you don't have the personnel to kill a pp, then that's on benning

Agreed. Green et al should be the first to go, imo, as the coaching is the most glaring issue. See how they perform with a new coach for the rest of the year, and if they still perform as poorly, fire Benning and then let the new GM retool and put his stamp on things. FA wanting to keep Green shows he has no idea what he's doing as an owner, as it shows he doesn't know poor coaching when he sees it. This is a glaring red flag, and one of many.

I believe the problem is personnel. Not having an extra pk defenceman and a right handed center. Signing an unvax player and being unaware of sutter's longtimers status was poor mgmt. Then the debacle of training camp of who they traded/lost on waivers was unacceptable.

    Outplayed?

    Shots on net, yes.

    Dangerous chances, not so much.

Having said that, yes, I think they can turn it around as they build better chemistry but the roster needs upgrade, which is going to be hard to pull off in the middle of the season.

    Hog-Miler-Boeser

    Pearson-Horvat-Garland

    x1-EP-Podkolzin

    Motte-Dickinson-x2

    OEL-Myers

    Hughes-Schenn/Hamonic

    x3-Poolman

Replace x1, x2, and x3 with someone better than Dowling, Chiasson, and new Burr and we might turn it around.

But how? Without subtracting a significant piece from the current lineup?

Maybe load up on the third line with Motte moving up and promote Lockwood or get a physical presence for a 4th line right wing spot? 4th line won't get many minutes but they would certainly bring energy to the game.

Address x3 by trading Rathbone and a pick for say Ben Chiarot in Montreal? I don't know how the cap would work out though.

If you are going to trade, I believe it has to BB as we are headed for cap trouble and trading BB would be getting ahead of it as well as this position is our strongest
