I don't hate the moves he made, I rather like them. I hate the timing of them. He's trying to rush us into being a contender within a couple seasons and to be a contender you need prospects to acquire players that put you over the edge or play on the cheap.
I give him an A-.
One thing I'm slightly worried about of all things is the play of Garland. I'm ignorant about him, but just based on all of the points he put up last season he's reliant on his teammates. Not a play driver from what I've seen, just a very smart thinker, but he will need a motor to make these plays and I just don't have any idea if he has that (that's the part I'm ignorant about). Without a motor you can end up like a better version of Louie Eriksson (go check out all of the goals that Eriksson put up the year we acquired him and compare it to all of Garland's goals last year, eerily similar). The good news is Garland isn't going to drastically slow down. I just wonder how his game will translate into our system is all. I anticipate a slight dip in production (around 8 points or so) if he isn't a get up and go player so if anybody knows more about the kid if you could please let me know how he is in comparison to say a Hoglander?
With that said, I love the kid's character. I anticipate he will prove me wrong and will end up being one of my favourites this year. He's got great finish and good awareness (things Louie had), it's just a matter of can we get to the front of the net and this team has struggled with that the past couple seasons. I know Garland will go there but will his line mates follow?
Either way, he's signed to a fair contract. I was worried he might sign for more when the trade was done because his points alone could have netted him 6 million. I was hoping for 4.5 but his aav is good.
Overall the team is much improved. Our defense is still very questionable and our systems are still stuck with a horrible coach, but with a huge turnover Green may actually play an offensive set up which is what this team badly needs to be successful. We should have more forechecking prowess, and my God Pearson should not be on the 2nd line anymore so this team should be a playoff team (maybe around a 6 seed if I were to guess) with the team anchor now being on a questionable defensive 6, but this team has a lot of range based on that alone for where they end up in the standings. On paper this team should be pretty decent. I wouldn't call it a contender, but it should be able to get in comfortably if they play the way they can.
Jim didn't do horrendously this off-season. He did rather well. I just question the timing of it and hopefully our pro scouts don't let us down with their judgment of OEL and Garland like they have in the past on some players.
I hope the sacrifice is worth it and I can eat crow and watch this team succeed like I know they can. Either way, I'm hyped for this season and I didn't expect I would be aside from seeing Podkolzin join the crew. A weird year to be excited about being a Canucks fan.
Good job, Jimbo. Pretty creative work there. I just hope it doesn't hurt the future but offloading Schmidt helped ease that worry. For once your timing of getting rid of players before they hit their floor on trade value didn't bite you this time! :D
I read a lot on Garland after the trade as i was upset we gave up the first and took on a long contract.
AZ fans were pissed, they saw him as their best young player, better than Keller!
Apparently, tons of speed, goes to the hard areas, competes, and is a leader. On the Canucks he will thrive and he has the attitude we need. Suggest just googling on him and you will see, he’s going to really make a difference in our top 6.

He was a decent skater. I think the issue was they wanted him to use his body more.
Gaunce is still a high iq player and he could still be a full time nhler.
He was good straight line, I think in the internal races he was one of the fastest on the team. Issue is he wasn't very mobile and as you say didn't use his body much. I think the problem was, in Junior he was a ppg player who was a top 6 center but then had to change his game to make in the NHL and struggled to do so. He is very smart and would conserve his energy and make a move when he had to. The problem is that works in junior, in the NHL everyone is going full speed constantly, so unless you have uber elite skills to slow the game down like the twins, its not going to work. Add in, he was expected to play a hard 4c role and didn't make it tough on opposition. If he improved his mobility in the last few years (as you can, easier to fix that speed), and is willing to throw his weight around, he could still carve out an NHL career. He's a smart, big player, its more about accepting what's required to stick in the league.

They really threw the book at poor Raffi Torres only to go on and allow the same $&!# to continue, league is a joke. They pick and choose who gets lenience and who doesn't, and there's no consistency aside from their refusal to hammer stars the way they do journeymen.
Ya and the Tom Wilson / Panarin situation was sickening. As a fan of the sport, to allow that nonsense is absurd. The guy didn't even follow the code. He turned around, see's its Panarin on him, doesn't care and body slams a guy 45 lbs lighter than him to the ice and flexes after. What an idiot. Panarin could have lost his career from that and the league does nothing. Meanwhile, Eddy misses a hit and gets 2 games, Rome a second late and is thrown out of the finals, Torres as you say, on and on.

We do turn the other cheek too much, I agree. Players saying it or not though, teams are always gonna gun for your top guys whether you've got someone like Reaves or Wilson or not. I seriously question the impact of one player, this ain't the 80's-early to mid 2000's. The NHL has gradually moved away from fighting, and even the sort of hits that used to be acceptable.
Knowing how things work, even if we had a guy like that he'd get hammered with suspensions. Boston, Vegas, there are teams that get away with $&!# we wouldn't.
Oh we'd definitely get suspensions. Tom Wilson does what he did to Panarin as a Canuck he gets 25 games lol. Marchand punching Daniel in the face 3 times, Daniel asks the ref when you going to call it, and gets an unsportsmanlike (in the finals). Don't remind me of what we face....smh

Training camp will really decide who starts and who doesn't but it looks like he was in Green's good books to end the season, maybe even ahead of Juolevi due to his offence.
We have to be smart and pair him with a very solid defensive veteran. Myers is probably the sounder defenceman over Schmidt to be honest, but I did like Juolevi-Myers at times during last season. Schmidt made far too many mistakes last year which could be dangerous playing with a rookie who likes to skate and attack, but Juolevi is relatively safe so Juolevi-Schmidt might be a nice 3rd pairing for us.
They sat Juolevi because apparently he was one of the worst hit by Covid. He lost alot of weight and strength. I think so long as Juolevi has a decent camp its his spot, Rathbone will be down the road as the first call up. He will get prime time in Abby to keep honing his game. Olli has to pass through waivers now, Rathbone doesn't so that will come into play. Good problem to have! Too much talent on LD!

If all you can do as a player is hit, talk $&!#, and fight, you're not likely to stick in this league in a significant capacity. The enforcer has gone the way of the dodo for the most part, he's an anomaly.
Having a deterrent is overstated imo, teams gotta rally together with or without that guy. I'd say the league and it's joke called player safety are a larger impact on guys getting hurt than enforcers somehow stopping guys from taking runs or making questionable hits.
agree to an extent with all of that, but if the league isn't policing it (aka Tom Wilson) the deterrent always plays a role. And players even say they play bigger when they know a player has their back. Team toughness can make up for it for sure, and it better, but how many teams actually swarm players when they cheap shot. Boston is great at it, and why as much as I dislike that team I respect them. No nonsense goes unpunished on that team. I wished the Canucks played like that. We turn the other cheek too much

I like Myers at times. But he seems to have difficulty when pressured in his own end.
For the money we pay him he should be our top guy on the right side and he just doesn't seem to fit that role.
Subban is even worse in his own end and does nothing offensively anymore other than skate around looking weird

Not sure about that, they were a very chippy and chripy team, they won't be anymore when they don't have him as the deterrent.

I was a big Benning supporter until the last few years. Initially, I felt like the usually trolly media types and vancouver "troll" fans (you know the one's who called those of us who are objective, "benning bros") were being their usual toxic selves. Then the last few years I started to question his ability to do anything other than draft very well.
I have to say, he was getting an F from me last year, this year, so far, he's getting an A+. He has done an excellent job thus far. Not perfect but hell the team is better, more cap room, and he's literally addressed every issue other than having a #1RD and you're aren't getting one of those unless you're selling alot of talent or developing them yourself.
He's now given Green a team to work with, and Green has zero excuses. He's given Green a defensive coach, because Green clearly didn't want to get rid of Baumgartner. As importantly, he's shown Bo, Petey, Boeser, Miiler and Hughes, that he wants to surround them with REAL help and for them to now take over and show they can lead the way.
I think the next 6-8 years with this group (if they can keep the core together) is going to be really fun! This team is ready to compete, ready to make the playoffs, and has the "makeup" of a cup contender. Now its up to the coaches and the players themselves to get the best out of themselves and go get one. ie Our core has to keep improving, players like Podz, Gadj, Mckewan, Motte, Juolevi, Rathbone and the other young ones have to step up and show they can play and be important role players. That's all that matters now.If you look at that latter list of names, they all have talent, all can bring important aspects to the "team", but they have to do it.
Well done JB, looking forward to whats to come with this group.
I've been a fan for 30 years, this group has potentially the best talent the Canucks have ever had (depth wise). No one can call him "Benning' anymore.

-I am of the opinion that it's HIGHLY unlikely either of Parayako and Klingberg choose not to test free agency and see what other offers are out there.
-I am of the opinion that our current defense is not a championship calibre defense and that clearing Myers' salary would give us a multitude of options in getting to that level regardless of whether that path involves Parayako or Klingberg.
-Given that we have OEL + an emerging Jack Rathbone (nothing is guaranteed, but the kid looks like he'll develop into a solid PMD), I am of the opinion that we have a far bigger need in having a top pairing shut down guy to give us a far more well rounded defense.
-I am of the opinion that we need a healthy pipeline of prospects to ensure a solid future. Hence, the importance of recouping a 1st round pick.
If my logic is off here then so be it.
we can get a lot more for Hughes than a first round pick.
if even consider moving hughes it has to be for a guy like Provorov. Not for a who knows draft pick and a dice roll.
Again, it makes no sense to give up Hughes if you want Parayko. You don’t need to do it at all.
All you do is simply wait and see if a deal can be reached then move Myers.
Team is better off, Myers is gone, you have Parayko and kept Hughes
I don’t really understand why you want to move hughes, that seems to be your goal here, since it doesn’t even need to be done

They must really see something in this kid if they gave him and ELC right away.
It seems like they wanted to control his development. I am sure they saw how hard it was for Podz to get ice, and its only his exceptional talent and work ethic that saved him from being messed up by a lack of playing time his first year in the KHL. Klimovich is probably not podz level and its never good to trust the development to others, especially when Russian's know the player isn't sticking around.
In my view, they should send him to the Q - why?
1. He gets his feet wet in North America
2. Hopefully he dominates and gains alot of confidence
3. Gives him some time to get man strength, and ready for the AHL
4. Contract won't kick in until he's a pro, either AHL or Europe.
5. Maybe send him to SHL to a team we have a relationship with if he's ready to play vs men but not AHL
We don't want to push this kid too fast like Jake. If he's as talented as he seems, he could be a gem and we need to not rush him. I love that he said he's coming over to make the team, and he signed. He wants to be here, he has a great competitive attitude.

Repeat after me.
Subban for ONE year.
Subban for ONE year.
Subban for ONE year.
Now take a deep breath. :-)
Unlike Myers, Subban would be completely off the books on July 1st 2022............which would allow us to go HARD HARD HARD after who we would really need at that time: Colton Parayako OR John Klingberg. This of course would depend on a number of factors. Does OEL still got it? Has Rathbone taken the next step? Is Graves that top matchups shut down guy? The bottom line is that we'd have OPTIONS. Depending on what we'd need at that time, we could go after a "defensive defenseman" in Parayko, or an offensive defensemen in Klingberg.
All the while, having recouped one of our 1st round picks while giving us even more overall cap flexibility.
Yes lets trade Hughes in case we get lucky and can sign parayko!!!! that's brilliant!!!! who cares if we can't because he resigns with St Louis or wants to go elswhere!!!! we will have a first rounder that wont even be close to as good! Literally just give away the best offensive DMAN in our history to roll the dice! WEEEE!!!

While I think this is the 'opener' I think the season will see the top two lines change with Boeser and Bo together with Garland, and Hogs up with Miller and Petey (to balance off the lines better).
Miller Petey Boeser
Garland Bo Hoglander
Pearson Dickinson Motte
Highmore Sutter McKewan
Podz (because green is green)
OEL Meyers
Hughes Hamonic
Juolevi Poolman
Rathbone Schenn
DemkoHalak
--------------------------
Most of the Season
Miller Petey Hoglander
Garland Bo Boeser
Pearson Dickinson Podz
Motte Sutter Mckewan
Highmore/Gadj/Lockwood as spares call ups
Same D and Goalies as above

Big picture. Myers for Subbann.
The idea is that we would walk away from Subbann after ONE year and then go HARD after Colton Parayko or John Klingberg in the 2022 offseason. By contrast, we would be married to Myers and his 6 million dollar contract for three more years if we kept Myers.
In my proposed deal, NJ would also give us a 1st (to recoup some of the first round picks we’ve been trading these past few years), as well as a guy that can take on tougher defensive match ups against top lines (Ryan Graves).
So..
Myers who's better than Subban for what? We don't need cap.
Parayko and Klingberg may not even make it to UFA, they could easily re-sign with their teams for 8 years vs 7 everywhere else, and obviously every team will be trying to get them.
So you're trading the best offensive defenseman we've had in the history of the franchise for a first rounder that 99.9% likely won't even be close to as good, for the hopes of signing a UFA?
This is completely absurd. Why not wait and see if you can make a deal to sign those players as UFA's and if so then trade Myers? You then have
OEL Parayko and still have Hughes
It seems you just want to throw away a literal superstar smh

I should mention this more on the 'proposals' forum but I have a suggestion that excites me (but may not excite you).
Hughes and Myers to the Devils for Ryan Graves, PK Subban, and a 1st round pick.
The Devils get their wish of reuniting the three Hughes', while we achieve the following:
1) We get a true top pairing shut down guy in Ryan Graves
2) We recoup one of the 1st round picks that we've given up over these past few years
3) After one year of PK Subban, he comes off the books, and we go HARD after one of Colton Parayko or John Klingberg based on our needs at time (i.e. if we feel like we need more offense from the back-end or if we need another tough stay-at-homer).
The above trade, in my opinion, is what would REALLY set us up for signficant playoff success.
why in the world would you want PK subban who can barely play anymore, and is old, Graves who is ok but average, and a pick for 2 of our top 3 dmen, and particularly the best offensive dman this franchise has ever had and who is 21?
Dude, ya makes alot of sense for NJ, its nonsense from a canuck perspective

Too slow and soft to play against,, was hoping for more speed and size on 4th line role.. oh well guess we had nothing better
He may not be a hitter/big body but he's not soft. The guy is a terrific shut down C and at 1 mil a great signing for the 4th line. He kills Penalties, plays a strong shut down role, and takes away hard d minutes from Bo and Miller. Hockey is a team sport, his ability to perform the dirty work and the hard defensive work no one likes is what allows Bo, Miller and Petey to have more offensive opportunity.

I think we can make playoffs. Division is still a mess.
Vegas and Seattle will be the ones to watch. We'll be jockeying with Edm and Calgary for the third spot.
LA is the dark horse here. Is this the year their prospects take the next step.
This is how Seattle is looking so far. I think we match up pretty well except for the Defense.

Schwartz-Wennberg-Appleton
Donskoi-Geekie-Jarnkrok
Tanev-Bastian-Blackwell

DriedgerSeattle's Center depth is atrocious. Personally, I think Francis was tanking for number 1 overall next year or the following given who's coming. Gio at some point will fall off and who's to say he'll be the same without the same D corps. Personally, I see their D corps as very one dimensional. I actually think ours is stronger. But its going to be the center ice position that kills them in the end.

I'm curious why people think our D is worse. I respect what Eddie brought and Schmidt as well. But perhaps we're taking a different approach, because for all that watched the games last year our defense was still a tire fire.
Here's what I see as why we are actually better
The game we are playing is clearly more possession and quicker outs. Our new Dmen (OEL, and either OJ / Rathbone) are all very good at the first pass and getting the puck out. They are definitely light years ahead of Edler and as good or better than Schmidt. Who frankly was over rated here. Good dman in vegas on a top pair with a high end Dman, not so good when forced to show his talent alone.
Playing with the puck / possession means, less running around, less defense! The twins showed us this. If you have the puck you're playing offense - and that's what JB clearly is trying to address.
Each line has a talented puck mover, and a stay at home player with size
We brought in one of the best, if not the best defensive coach in the game from St Louis, Baumer nonsense is a moot now.I find it hard to believe our d is worse this year. To me it's light years better because of its make up and depth, not to mentioned proper coaching on the way.

Danila Klimovich - 2021 NHL Draft Prospect Profile (thehockeywriters.com)
Only one quote but there are others
The size, the skills, the hockey sense are all there for him to be an offensive producing player and he’s consistent in his approach. He’s got NHL speed and competes hard. Now, he does have a flair for the dramatic at times, but that’s good. It means he’s confident, but, every shift, he’s first on pucks, always going to the net and he’s got that knack to be open and available to get that shot off. He’s on the top line and is the top scorer and he’s one of the first forwards coming back on the play.” – Dan Marr, director of NHL Central Scouting
I love this quote about him too!
Klimovich is a highly creative goal scoring forward with an NHL caliber shot and a compete level that is off the charts

FWIW, Scouching had him in the 70s, so quite a bit lower in rankings as when Klimovich was picked. I think a lot of it was the lack of intel surrounding this guy in general. However, Benning had personally scouted this guy in Texas at the U18 tournament, and his scouts likely saw the other games in Europe. Just a guess. It's quite uncharacteristic for him to feel so excited about a prospect.
What did Benning say about him?

Never been particularly impressed with him but after looking at his stats he’s a pretty consistent 20 goal / 0.5 ppg game player. Just never seen him as a play driver but i guess you need support players too!
