Yeah, when Benning let Brackett go that spelled the end of our good drafting.

Brackett left after the 2020 draft. Since then none of Vancouver's draft picks have played an NHL game, so I don't know how you can conclude that Vancouver's drafting was any better or worse than when Brackett was here. And in case you are wondering, none of Minnesota's Brackett picks have played an NHL game yet, either. You are just buying the Kool Aid that Brackett was the genius and Benning the idiot. Why is it that when a draft pick turned out well, it was because of Brackett and the scouts, but when a pick failed to live up to expectations, it was all on Benning? How does that work, exactly?

  2. I have all kinds of respect for how Brock faced adversity and has emerged stronger, more emotionally secure, and more mature than ever. Grief has the capacity to immobilize, to frustrate, to anguish and to question everything you thought you knew. It takes time, and no two people will experience it in exactly the same way. Brock has come to terms with what he must do to perform at the highest level and appears motivated to do what it takes to be the player he wants to be. He seems to have come out of a dark time and it will be interesting to see what next season brings from Brock, regardless of where he ends up playing.

Now fire Yeo.  He is not good at what he does and he doesn't do much.

And you know this how? Yeo was hired by this organization and if he was ineffective, don't you think he'd have joined Jason King on his way out the door? I have no idea what Yeo actually does, and neither do you. Stop pretending to know more about running an NHL team than those who actually run an NHL team.

  4. Just a quick note: When a team announces that they and the GM have decided to part ways, it really means a conversation went something like this:

Team: We want different management and you are no longer the one we want.

GM: So are you firing me?

Team: Or you can just quit and spare us all the indignity that comes with being fired.

GM: You mean, I get to hang on to my self-respect and you look like it was my idea to leave?

Team: Now you've got it. We can say we never fired you, you can say you weren't fired. Everybody wins.

The media in this city is absolute garbage.

Toxic and scummy a lot of them

And yet they persist, because people read, watch and listen to them. And what is toxic and scummy about asking athletes questions that fans would ask if they had the chance? Now I am not a media apologist, and I have noticed two distinct types of sports media member in Vancouver; the first are the folks who try to give a honest story, the second are those who are far more interested in being a media personality than a working reporter. There are very few in the first group, while the second group is sort of like a shark tank, where the motto is "Eat, or be eaten." Those ones I find easy to ignore.

How many players make up your core? For most it’s five. So basically you’re saying we have one core piece. IMHAO we have five elite core pieces (Demko, Hughes, Petey, Miller, Hronek) it’s the supporting cast where we need four more pieces. And those guys are much easier to come by (trade, free agency, draft) than getting the core five.

I like your perspective Alf. I might add Kuzmenko to the core as I think he's capable of a 50 goal season. And I know it's way too early, but Hirose gives me serious Tanev vibes with his calmness. And he's a better skater and puck handler than Tanev, too.

He could be a pretty useful guy like Trottier on the Penguins if he wants to take one of those cheap deals to be on a winner.  I remember Teemu Selanne signed for $1M for a year just to play with Kariya again.

With utmost respect to a great leader and outstanding player, he is done and would provide nothing to Vancouver that would push them forward. Unless -30 this year and -44 combined over the last two seasons is in any way helpful to young Vancouver team.

I said a while back that Demko needs to match the graphics on his pads, blocker and catcher. What I meant was he needs to update his pads to the new CCM EFLEX 6, not downgrade his blocker to the EFLEX 5.

Demko needs to move on from the EFLEX 5. The graphics design is so dated. This model had some of the ugliest graphics across the NHL during its run. Holtby's pad graphics in the Canadian Division season were awkward to look at. Markstrom has moved on to the EFLEX 6 and they look so much better. Demko needs to follow suit.

Really? We talking about graphics on goalie pads? Graphics? I can see us talking about games, but graphics? Is this game about more than graphics?  Can you believe we talking about graphics? Graphics? I can see us talking about the game, but graphics?

  9. I have an account and have never tweeted or messaged anyone. I just lurk and have bookmarks for hockey and political stuff. It has never occurred to me to like or retweet or any of those other things I can't be bothered to understand or even care about. If Twitter disappeared, there will be something new and shiny where I can lurk and have bookmarks for hockey and political stuff. I am a simple man trying my best to live an uncomplicated but fulfilling life. No Twitter, no cry.

Agree on Building Structure but don't you think they could have held off - even by a few weeks ?    Especially after JR was obviously forced by Francesco Aqua-Lini to abandon his plans for "Major Surgery" (A.K.A. a REBUILD,) that JR finally had to admit was the only option & hope for this franchise, with Aqua-Lini forcing JR to try and fix this disfunctional mess of a team thru patchwork Putty & Scotch Tape, instead of tearing down the walls to the foundation and FINALLY Building from the Bottom up Instead of replacing rotten timber in the walls one at a time.

In a word: bunk. Where has it been reliably reported that Aquilini forced JR to abandon his plans for major surgery? Nowhere. Or that Aquilini forced JR to

try and fix with putty and Scotch tape? Again, nowhere. And what exactly does tearing down the walls to the foundation mean? And what is the foundation? And isn't trading away Horvat a major surgical step towards a so-called rebuild?

You wanna bitch about Aquilini, go ahead. Never mind the reality of Aquilini ALWAYS signing the big cheques his management team asks for. But if you keep ranting on about a rebuild, then define it. In detail, with names and everything. Who stays, who goes? Come on, let's hear your plan.

  11. How about the bottom two teams in each division are seeded 1-8. Then the lottery would go back to draw the first three picks. Everyone of the eight teams gets one ball in the hopper. Those bad teams, who really need top picks, would then have a three in eight chance of walking away with a top three pick.

This year, the list would be

    Det    80

    Mon  68

    Phi    71

    CBJ  56

    Ari     69

    Chi    56

    SJS   60

    Ana

  12. Too many hypersensitive people around here. The guy just had a great game. The interviewer set him up find out a) what it felt like to be going to the playoffs and b) how having the NYI fans behind the team was so helpful going into the playoffs. She was asking for an opinion about going to the playoffs with the Islanders in front of a rabid crowd. In terms of his experience in Vancouver, he NEVER experienced that fan excitement in Vancouver, because the one year they actually played in the playoffs, it was 17 games in front of empty stands in Edmonton. Nine and a half years is a really long time to go without experiencing the excitement that comes with making the playoffs. In Bo's opinion, his current situation is way better than Vancouver's, so why wouldn't he be eager to finally get that opportunity?

Besides, even if he did mean to take a shot at Vancouver, who cares? He owes us nothing and we don't owe him. But remember this: For nine and a half years Bo dedicated himself completely to the Vancouver Canucks with loyalty and character. He worked hard to be a good player and gave us a lot of great moments. It is stupid to ignore all that just because he correctly said his current situation was better than Vancouver. It IS better, and Bo is showing the Islanders the same loyalty he showed the Canucks. In other words, he was being what he has always been: a guy who puts the team first.

Now all of this might seem like I am a Horvat apologist. I am not. I never felt he was assertive enough as a captain and he was a less than committed forechecker. I was also frequently annoyed that he didn't stick up for his teammates in scrums. The absolute last straw for me was when Max Domi laid a vicious crosscheck on Dakota Joshua after Joshua had scored. Horvat was standing right there and didn't so much as look at Domi, much less let him know that he'd crossed a line. Then I remembered that he and Domi are old buddies and Domi was best man at Horvat's wedding. Oh.

I am now completely ambivalent about Horvat, as I am about most Canucks who have moved on. I am just relieved that management apparently decided that he was not the captain they were looking for and did not commit to $68M over eight more years.

  13. Somebody has already said that Woo has really stepped up his game with Wolanin in Vancouver. He is playing with confidence and is seeing ice time in important situations. Woo is a great skater, can throw big hits and has better than average offensive capabilities. Some guys take longer than others to put it all together, but Woo seems to have figured it out and now all he needs is more games under his belt. We sometimes forget that it often takes defencemen longer than forwards to get to the NHL level. Woo will be 23 this summer and I'd say his development is right on track. If he can maintain his play through next season, I could see him as a injury call up to Vancouver.
