  1. I just heard his name spoke out loud during play by play. Sounds alarmingly  like colon.. years and years of hearing "there's a hard shot by colon" are ahead of me.

I really hope JB isn't simply trying to replicate the Sedins with Dahlen and Pettersson, because it won't be very successful. It'll be great to have two elite offensive, skilled guys in our top-6, but one thing I've learned from the last 5 Cup champions is that you need your top line to play well defensively. Glass, Mittelstatd and Vilardi can all play well defensively. Pettersson is mentioned as being a good shot blocker and PKer, but with that frame I don't see it happening.

IMO our biggest downfall in 2011 was the Sedins' poor defensive play. Look at the last few Cup champs.

Crosby - great 200 foot player. Great offensively, but can back-check and win battles in the corners.

Toews - Selke winner and clutch scorer.

Kopitar - Selke guy, big strong center but can score as well.

Krejci - Very skilled offensively but also great defensively. Bergeron = Selke winner

Datsyuk - Going back to 2008, obviously the best two-way guy in the game

You can see the trend. You need your top guy to play well defensively, because at the end of the day the matchup game is ever so important in the playoffs. I would have loved Horvat and another two-way center who can be a playmaker and passer, but lets just hope Pettersson can play well defensively too. Henrik and Daniel got victmized time and time again by Marchand and a very good two-way line which is why they lost the Finals. Hopefully history won't repeat itself.

Scouting reports say Pettersson is very sound defensively. I have watched the tape and I can say he seems very good in his own end and back checks hard from what I have seen. His scouting reports call him a 2 Way forward with elite offensive upside and he himself describes himself as a 2 way guy that loves to score goals.  I don't know where you get your info from, but to say Mittel is going to be good defensively but Pettersson won't be seems like a load to me.

  3. Seems to have good size and he's a righty, no complaints here. Looking at his stats, looks like he might have some physicality or a mean streak in his game, 172 pm in 50 games in 14-15 and 94 pm in 90 games in the OHL. What's this kids play style like?

Who doesn't have a weird fascination with them? Such a strange group of people (in the good way)

In the best way. I have this thing with one of my best friends called 'Fun Finn Fact Friday'. Every Friday (kinda, I have been running out of material the last year or so) I try to post an interesting tidbit of information about Finland or a Finnish person on his facebook profile. No idea why it's a thing, but it is.

I grew up with Trevor Linden and Jyrki Lumme as my 2 favorite players, and my favorite players to ever play outside the Canucks are Teemu Selanne and Martin St. Louis. Obviously I'm going to love this kid.

  5. Love the pick. People who know me here know I have a weird fascination with Finland, so having more Finns in the prospect pool is always a plus for me. Don't know the kid, but sounds like he has high end offensive potential. I see no reason not to take a flyer in the 6th round on potential, seems like a typical boom or bust late rounder.

almost 100 points this year in the OHL, pretty impressive. Welcome aboard Petrus!

  6. BOO YEAH! Pumped on the kid. I'll admit he wasn't my first choice, not even my 2nd or 3rd, but what do I know. (Vilardi, Makar, Glass for the record)

I think we have a real gem in this kid. Benning went for a home run and drafted a player with one of the highest offensive ceilings in this draft. Been working all day so haven't had a chance to read this thread yet. I bet money that the same few people that complain about Virtanen in his thread have popped in here already to share their vast amounts of wisdom

Welcome aboard Pettersson! Stoked to have you!

If I were NHL GM I would pick OJ 10 times out of 10 over Tkachuk.    Megna I agree with you - Chaput I don't, I believe Chaput is a decent NHL player and could be part of bottom 6 on any team.   Megna is a curiosity to me as he simply shows nothing in the way of an NHL player so not sure what Canucks see in him.

His skating. Not saying I agree with it, but I have heard uncle Willy and Benning talking about Megnas speed being the reason why he's on the team.

Really hope we don't rush and ruin Juolevi just because Sbisa and Tryamkin are gone. Lets hope Juolevi focusses on getting more physical, stronger and hopefully playing in the AHL sooner. I think we need to go the pathway of someone like Pouliot or Shea Theodore with Juolevi, rather than rush him into the NHL and break him. He needs to start playing against more physical forwards and men, and start that at the AHL rather than straight into one of the toughest divisions in the league. Getting his ankles broken by McDavid and Joe Thornton every other night would be the worst way to throw a defenceman into the NHL.

Sign a UFA rather than ruin Juolevi's development, he could be an absolute gem if we develop and groom him correctly. No other bone-headed GMs and coaches toss a skinny puck moving defenceman into the NHL like this. Could be argued that Hutton and Stecher could have used a year in the AHL as well but we just had no depth, and now we're running into the same problems. Meanwhile the teams with good depth develop their rookies the right way and they end up as studs. Hopefully Holm and a UFA are enough to keep Juolevi away from the NHL.

Ideally we see him at the AHL next season (if he's eligible, otherwise junior again) and then 16-19 minutes a night for about 30-50 NHL games the following season. Then top-4, 20+ minutes a night the following season.

He is not. I hope to see him go play in the Finnish league to play against bigger, stronger competition.

To those who have watched the draft before: Is it worth tuning in for? Or is it better to just get the results? The ED was terrible and I don't want to sit through that if I could be doing other things.

It's worth watching because you get to see a little bio and interviews with players as they are drafted. The occasional trade or surprise choice adds some excitment. It's also exceedingly satisfying to hear a drone of people boo that troll Gary every chance they get. That show last night was dreadful.

Also I evened up your plus/minus for that post simply because you didn't deserve a minus for that. Why someone would waste their only minus on that is beyond me. He must have been one of the writers for the show...

"Well, he's a good player. It'll be interesting to see how it goes."

Not exactly glowing praise, but maybe he's just playing aloof. To me, this sounds like they're interested, but it depends on if he's still around at #5. So, what if Glass and Makar are both gone by our turn? Hello Pettersson.

If glass and Maker are both gone we get Vilardi. A OK by me, I don't see how he still has nay sayers after that memorial cup performance. Him and No anchoring out top lines for the foreseeable future sounds perfect to me. That being said I'm also totally ok with Makar and Glass at 5.

My top picks for 5 are actually Vilardi, Makar, Glass, in that order.

The expression is a metaphor for the invisible barrier preventing women from ascending to the upper echelons in major corporations. Interestingly in Japan, it's commonly referred to as the "rice-paper ceiling", translucent, not transparent, thus easier to perceive. Conservative for ladies in the work force, of course.

I also think my sense of ha rammed into the proverbial glass ceiling, & how could I have seen that comin'?!

    ....

Vilardi and Mittelstadt are bigger than Glass and Necas. 200 vs 180.

Just going by Elite Prospects for the time being until the updated numbers come out from the combine. If those numbers are out and you have access them I would love a link or something. Having a difficult time obtaining any information from the combine so far.

What scares me is if JB drafts size at C and he turns out like Gaunce

    Drafted 26th OA (2012)

    77 NHL games = 1 goal 5 assists

    Vilirdi/Glass 6'2-188ish

    Mittelstandt/Necas 6'1- 185ish

Those are the 4 centers you hear about the most with this draft in our position. None of those players are a reach due to their size vs skills ratio. If you are referring to all 6'5 of Rasmussen, I would agree with you. I don't think we need to worry about that though.

I don't think you read what I said.   If you constructively provide input including disappointment, no problem.  You disagree with someone more apt to give benefit of doubt to a talented 20 year old, no problem.   My problem is simple - and I would think you share this given your thoughtful posts - the trollish activity of slamming players that goes on page after page, post after post with every possible manner of attack (minutes putting skates on, ratio of mustard on burger - only two haven't seen so far) and then comparing entirely different players as some form of way of PROVING how bad the kid(s) is.   It is far from fan-like behaviour.  What you have posted seems reasonable, level-headed and I would find it hard for anyone to find it offensive but each to their own.   My issue is with a handful of trolls that I believe have agendas that are less than mature and I have no issue in pointing it out as while the Canucks are really not "my team", they are my favourite Canadian team and an organization that in the old days did right by me.

I hear what you're saying I just don't see many people acting trollish. I see fans that aren't happy with a player and vent their frustration which they're entitled to do. I'm not trying to argue with you over what you said. You're clearly not stupid and seem to take good points when they're presented, I wish everyone on this board had an outlook like that. i get why people are as unhappy as some are with him. The dead horse only gets beaten because after someone puts him down someone else seems to pre maturely pump him up, and I know all about being pre mature haha. You have vary valid points, and I like your style of debating opposed to others on here

Totally fair response to the subject at hand.

Minutes putting skates on?  Ratio of mustard?  What the hell are you talking about?  lol

Solid response, thanks for the effort.

This is the difference between someone like Toews, FTG, ABF and others around here who criticize  of Jake with dignity, and a troll comment.

You know you're on the right track when you get up voted by several Canucks fans and down voted by a couple of the Canucks haters/trolls.

Right? I was testing a theory. It was supported quite firmly by Ash and 5th so far. Just waiting for another poster or 2 to chime in with a negative and I'll be spot on.  Gotta hand it to them, negativity breeds negativity, they stick together.

  17. I have always been strong on my stance that Tippet is being under sold on CDC. Its a fair assessment, since he is not in our current organizational needs. I disagree with the notion that you must pick BPA. You pick the player that long term will advance the organization. If that player is not in the future plans and will be traded for what we need, great, so be it. But if several players are all arguably even, you obviously pick the player that fills holes in our prospect lineup. Particularly in a draft such as this. Teams are built through the draft, so obviously you pick pieces that you need to build your team.

In my opinion this is where the top of the draft lines up. This is not who will be selected where, this is in my opinion the BPA order for the top of the draft.

    1. Patrick

    2. Hischier

    3. Vilardi

    4. Heiskan

    5. Mittelstandt

    6. Tippett

    7. Glass

    8. Maker

    9. Necas

    10. Lijegren

And for the record I do think we take Casey. The combine results may change my mind though.
