Severson is really only a fit for handedness. We need to look elsewhere IMO, he's going to cost too much $ for too long. He'd just be "next Myers" in that regard, an ill fitting player we'd be looking at how we can get off his salary/watching the years tick off until we can maybe retain and move him.

Ya think? He's should be good for another 3-4 years before we'd see a decline, and although this past year wasn't as impressive from a points perspective, he still managed 33 points, and improved his +/- from -14 to +9. (For what +/- is worth). I do agree he might be outside the price range we'd want to pay, but not that he wouldn't be a good fit.

With that said, I also have nothing against paying less for a guy who is almost purely a defensive monster... regardless of whether said monster can wrack up significant points or not. Ultimately, while I'd like to see a bit more scoring out of our back end and keep the puck in the opposing zone, a largely defensive-minded (but mobile and smart) defenseman would fit the bill quite nicely, and come at a more reasonable cost/cap than a guy who is capable of putting up 30+ points.

    I could see Vancouver try and sign UFA Graves 28--6'5 -225--LD --4.5 million X 4 yrs   --- Severson 29 -- 6'2  RD -- 5.5 million X 4 yrs

Graves is also a good player with the qualities we covet. But he's a left handed player... does he ever play the right side? Seems Severson is a more natural fit.

The numbers just don't fit well without dropping some cap...

  3. It would be unfortunate to now lose him for nothing, but I'm not concerned about him returning next year as Hughes' partner. He did better than expected, but its a small sample size and during his dozen (?) games, he didn't even get a point. Defensive minded or not, that's just not good enough unless he's an absolute monster in other areas. Which he isn't.

Furthermore, I believe the intent is to keep improving the D from where it is now. This probably includes trying to move Myers, and possibly bringing in a PROPER defenseman to pair with Hughes. And maybe we bring back Schenn on the cheap, or re-sign Bear.

    I could see something like:
    Hughes Severson
    OEL Hronek
    Hirose Schenn/Bear
    McWard/ Wolanin / Burroughs

I think that's a pretty darn good d-core... even if OEL isn't ideal in the 2nd pairing, perhaps he will have a resurgent season. Even this season, he was nearly a point every-other-game. No, that doesn't make up for his poor +/- and frankly terrible defensive play on most nights, but it still accounts for something.

  4. I think if you look hard enough at cherry picked stats, you can find similarities in any team.

Let's take the Canucks and Boston - this regular season's best team:
    - Both have a player with over 100 points who's surname starts with "P".

    - Both have a 2nd best player who used to be more an energy and grit kind of guy, but eventually found a scoring touch. Also both with a surname starting with "M".

    - Both #1 goalies wear #35.

    - Both teams are generally disliked compared to others in the league.

    - Both have a defenceman who played 8 games or more, but managed to collection zero points.
    - Both have had a Bertuzzi on their team.

So, basically, we're just as good as Boston. Cup run in 2023-24. Book it.

  5. So, move an underperforming and overpaid player with only 1 year on his contract and a very low ACTUAL salary in return for a similarly underperforming and overpaid player in Risto. And in order to make this happen, we absorb a 3 *extra* years of Risto's salary, as well as a top prospect and a pick.

I'm sorry, but I'm convinced your account is owned by either Daniel Briere or Jim Benning.

  6. Surprised this hasn't blown up on CDC. Is there another post I missed?

It sounds like he's dissing our fans, but he's actually dissing the fact they our team didn't see much playoff action during his tenure here. Which is probably somewhat fair- though he WAS an integral part of those teams, so....

  7. If you look at his NCAA scoring stats, they are similar to other NCAA defensemen who went on to have very good careers, such as McAvoy, Miller, and Anderson. Now, all those guys are a bit bigger, but with a 6' frame, Hirose could still pack on 20 pounds over the next few years. This could be a very astute signing indeed...

Yes he had a bad start.   Turning it around now.    Personally would be happy not to see anyone get the C before at least December of next season.

Even if he wasn't increasing his scoring, you're right - overall, he is playing more responsible now. And, dare I say, he looks even more motivated than ever. He has a spring in his step for certain.

I also agree that right now is not the right time to name a captain. I don't think there is any ideal candidate who is ready. Yet.

  9. ..and he didn't improve up to his injury.

A potential buyout looks to be a rather whopping 8m in savings next year, then 5.6 the following, and 2.8 the two years after that. Then his contract ends. Yet we'd pay 2.4 for the following 4 years... which kind of sucks, but with the cap inevitably going up, it will be a bit more palatable at that time. And besides that, by then, hopefully we draft well and replenish the cupboards to bring quality players up with ELCs so we aren't in such a crunch by 27-28.

With ownership/management wanting to try to be a playoff team sooner than later, it stands to reason they MUST be considering a buyout in light of OEL's dramatic regression.

Not about durability.  It's about size and strength in puck battles.  I'd wager Boeser can win more battles along the boards than Garland can.  Albeit that little elf is pretty shifty.

I think you would lose that wager. Boeser is bigger by a country mile, but Garland's ability to reverse direction and shake off defenders is excellent. I also think their ability to be physical isn't dissimilar. Garland goes in with speed and tenacity but isn't very big so has limited effectiveness. Boeser goes in with size, but isn't very fast or tenacious so has limited effectiveness as well.

I love Boes. I really do. I think he's an amazing human being, and has high-end talent. But frankly, we need more from him. I understand he's been through very adverse circumstances, but at a certain point, he needs to get over it and commit himself to the game and the team. Those graphs on the first page tell the story.

As for the general "growing in size", I think that is inevitable. Players are bigger, faster, stronger. The real key is to ensure you are bigger, faster, and stronger than the OTHER teams.

I'd argue that Miller took a bit of a discount.  He just came off a 99 point season.  He easily could have commanded at a minimum what Horvat got with NYI.

See, I thought it was fairly reasonable as well. Yet, when it came time to potentially trade him, there were few suitors. Part of that was obviously having to fit him under the cap, but that rings true for us as well when we signed him.

EP is an amazing talent but 11-12 million is just sooo much money to pay 1 player on a team's roster. The fact Toronto has 3 players making around 11 million speaks to their recent run of "success" and is a recipe for 1st rnd exits. Colorado is soon going to price themselves out of contention once Mac's new deal kicks in too.

Like Miller and the Sedins before him, I hope EP takes a bit of a haircut and comes in around 9.5-10. I hope Alvin can make a long term deal that makes sense for both sides. *I definitely want to have EP40 long term but also want us to be able to build up the entire roster.

Boeser, Horvat, and Miller were all unwilling to take a discount, so I don't think the precedent or culture has been set for Petey to take one. Petey also signed his 2-year presumably with the idea of banking on himself, and cashing in at the end of the term. No reason for him to stray from the course.

Considering that when Petey re-signs he will likely be top 5 in points in the league, I think 11+ million is entirely the ballpark we're looking at. Yes, you're right - Toronto has 3 players making this kind of cash and we can see how it makes it challenging to maintain a competitive team aside from these players, and that is certainly not the kind of scenario we want to get involved in. Still, if you want to have stars, ya gotta pay in today's league.

  13. I don't think the idea of acquiring him was a problem. Having a second scorer on the blueline seems like a solid idea.

From my own perspective, I don't know enough about the guy nor know how good he truly is defensively. (I've heard mixed information on that). What I felt we REALLY needed was a reasonably quick, reasonably mobile, big shutdown defenseman who could compliment Hughes. If we somehow get that player, we're all good. Hard to do, considering the cap eaten up by OEL and especially Myers... being a RD.

If Hronek is a solid top 4 defender and a cusp top 2 defenceman, it takes assets to acquire such a player. I think people's main issue is the timing. We've all seen the retool that didn't work out, and I think most fans believe a second retool is only going to prolong the hurt before we rebuild properly. But IF management is somehow successful this time around, I don't mind the acquisition. If not, it was an enormous waste of picks. Let's not forget in one year's time, Hronek has a 5.3m qualifying offer, but is more likely going to be looking for upwards of 6m. Granted, Myers will be off the books by then but that "wash" means we have no extra to allocate to the forward group, nor another solid RD.

If he ends up being only a bottom pair guy, sure. But so far Bear is ahead of them and looks to have more potential. Johansson is obviously a wildcard but I'm not getting my hopes up too high before he plays a game in North America.

Bear has proven to be a #5 that can play top 4 spot duty, the question is whether he can up his game to be a consistent #4. Burroughs has shown to be a competent 6/7 guy but not more than that. Juulsen might still have more upside to him, but he's also at best a 6/7 guy right now. Schenn is a great leader and has chemistry with Hughes, but he's only a 5/6 guy which forces other defensemen to double-shift with Hughes and he is going to start slowing down with age.

I agree with this. If we are going to pay the guy above 2m, he really needs to bring noticeably more than the fringe guys. Contrary to what some have indicated, I don't believe he's a top 4 defenseman whatsoever on any good team, and as pointed out, he couldn't even stay on the 3rd pairing on the Hurricanes. This isn't to say he won't improve, and I DO like him, but given the choice between his reasonably solid play and Schenn's muscle, I'd actually pick Schenn to make that 2m+. To me, he makes more of an impact - although you're certainly correct that he will slow down over time. With that said, he had a great year and hopefully, ideally, we're really only talking about the next couple of years...

  15. He isn't a top 4, no. But he's still young, and has shown good things at the lower levels.  There is still time.

And although he and Dillon are the worst defensive pair in the league this year, he is typically known to be a defensive defenseman - and can provide 95% of what Myers does, at a far lower price. I'm totally game, and do think he could pair favourably with Hronek, if OEL can't regain form. And even as a 3rd pairing, I still say he'd be our best option out of our group.

While highly touted at one point, the fact he hasn't really worked out yet along with him asking for a trade makes me believe he can probably be moved at minimal cost. Seems like exactly the kind of young reclamation project management is looking for.

  16. Well on one hand, we now have a threat from either side of the blueline. I could see him surely improving our PP. We needed to improve our scoring from the back end overall, and this does help that.

But as others have mentioned, I'm not sure this is the guy we really needed for our right side. I imagine he'll play with Hughes, but is he the amazing defensive player we wanted to allow Hughes to play his game at the highest level? I guess that remains to be seen, but I don't think so. As far as I know, Hronek is more known for his offense.. even if he is at least decent defensively.

On the right side, we now have:
    Hronek
    Myers

And then these are the options we have for the remaining spot:

    Bear
    Burroughs
    Juulsen

    Poolman

All of the above 4 may or may not be with us next season, and even if one was, I'd rather have Schenn back above all of them. (Yes, even Bear). Only thing I'd rather see IS that defensive stalwart - but then we're paying quite a bit for our d. I picked Severson as my UFA target, with a *hopeful) 4.5m salary:

    Hughes Severson: 7.85 / 4.5
    OEL Hronek: 7.26 / 4.4

    X / Myers      1.0 / 6.0
    Extra 1.0

  17. I don't know much about Livingstone or Korczak, but Peeke and Bahl have been two guys on my radar. Bahl shoots left, Peeke right. I really think we need more help on right side defense than left, with Hughes and OEL solidly pencilled into the top 2 pairings.

If there IS an agreement for Schenn to come back next year, I absolutely want him in the lineup if we can get him for not much more than he was paid this season. I think his leadership but obviously his hitting are important elements. As mentioned, there is currently no room for him until we figure out the Bear and Myers situations, and not sure how much others factor in like Poolman or Dermott. (The latter of which can play either side)

I also think if management thinks we will be able to compete in no more than 2 years that Severson HAS to be taken a look at.
