  1. LAS VEGAS -- The UFC is looking at coming to Vancouver next June, co-owner Lorenzo Fertitta said Saturday.

"Canada's been really difficult to navigate in," Fertitta told a question-and-answer session at the UFC Fan Expo. "It's an interesting situation because I think pound-for-pound the UFC is more popular in Canada than any other country including the U.S.A. I mean, it's amazing."

But there are sanctioning problems about staging live events in some provinces, noted Fertitta

"We're in discussions with the government about them changing its laws and we feel very positive about it," he added, without specifying which level of government. "Vancouver is somewhere we've made a lot of progress. We've actually pencilled in our June pay-per-view for Vancouver of next year."

The UFC has held two cards in Canada to date, both in Montreal: UFC 83 in April 2008 and UFC 97 in April 2009. Each was a sellout at the Bell Centre, setting a record for an MMA audience in North America.

The mixed martial arts organization is also holding talks with the Ontario government about bringing the sport there. UFC president Dana White had said he hoped to hold an event in Toronto later this year, but has now revised that forecast to 2010.

"We're going to be in Toronto. I guarantee it," he told fans Saturday. "And it will be the biggest mixed martial arts event in North America."

The Rogers Centre has been cited as a possible venue.

White said the success of the sport in Canada caught the UFC by surprise.

"Canada is the Mecca of mixed martial arts right now and I didn't see that one coming," he said.

I'm not going to get too excited right now, but this would be huge.

  2. As expected a heavyweight bout between former UFC title-holders Randy Couture (16-9 MMA, 13-6 UFC) and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (31-5-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC) will serve as the headliner for UFC 102 on Aug. 29, the UFC today announced.

The event takes place at the Rose Garden in Porland, Ore., and is the UFC's first-ever event in the state.

The night's main card, including the heavyweight main event, airs on pay-per-view.

That should be a hell of a fight.

  3. I thought the whole show was great. So much better than any Affliction or Elite XC events. I will definitely be following WEC from now on. Before I was more of a casual fan, would only watch if Faber or Torres were fighting.

And good commentating job by KenFlo. The guy knows his stuff.

    Worst nickname ever.

  4. Shelving plans to make Quinton (Rampage) Jackson the first title defence for Lyoto Machida, the UFC is instead matching Jackson with Rashad Evans - the man Machida just beat for the light-heavyweight title.

Jackson and Evans will square off as coaches in Season 10 of "The Ultimate Fighter" reality TV show, the UFC announced Thursday.

Jackson had hoped to meet Evans in a title fight, but Machida spoiled that scenario by knocking Evans out last Saturday at UFC 98 in Las Vegas. Jackson was offered Machida but turned him down, explaining Thursday that he had opted to put a title shot on hold to settle a score with Evans.

"Rashad left a bad taste in my mouth. He got up in my face with his bad-donkey breath," Jackson told a conference call, referring to a post-fight tete-a-tete he had with then-champion Evans after disposing of Keith (The Dean Of Mean) Jardine at UFC 96 in March.

"It's unfinished business, homie," added Jackson, who said he wanted "to smack him (Evans) right then and there" during their cage confrontation.

"The Ultimate Fighter: Heavyweights" will debut Sept. 16 on Spike TV with Evans and Jackson squaring off in December once the show's run is done. It's the first time the series has featured heavyweights since Season 2 when Evans, who has since dropped down to fighting at 205 pounds, was a cast member.

Jackson had hoped Evans would defeat Machida, so he could go after him and the title.

"I wasn't happy to see him (Evans) get knocked out because I wanted to be the first one to knock him out." Jackson said. "I'm kind of jealous of Machida."

UFC president Dana White said he offered Jackson a crack at Machida, only to be told Jackson wanted "to kick Rashad's donkey."

"When somebody says something like that to me, I'm in," said White.

Added Jackson: "Rashad's donkey is grass and I'm the lawnmower. He's going to get his donkey whupped, no matter what."

White said Machida would fight before December against an opponent yet to be determined. Mauricio (Shogun) Rua is one possible opponent.

Jackson had thought he would never coach again, describing himself as a "sore loser" the first time around. But he left Season 7 with a good relationship with the fighters on his team and "when I found out who I would be coaching against, I couldn't turn it down."

Jackson remains close to several of his fighters from the show, with Mike Dolce now part of his own camp as an assistant coach.

The TV show involves cooping up 16 fighters in a Las Vegas home, with no contact with the outside world other than to train and fight. The last man standing wins a contract to fight in the UFC.

NOTES - Veteran welterweight Frank Trigg is returning to the UFC after an absence of more than three years. Trigg (19-6) lost two grudge fights with welterweight champion Matt Hughes in his first stint in the organization.

It will undoubtedly be the most entertaining season of the Ultimate Fighter in the show's history.
