You will need to post the rule as there is nothing that I can find that states anything about the penalty box being "equivalent to leaving the bench". I believe @Elias Pettersson is correct. There is a rule that states, 'No penalized player may leave the penalty bench except on the expiration of his penalty or at the end of a period.' The period has ended meaning Pietrangelo could leave the penalty box and that point he is no different to any other player on the ice.

Should players come onto the ice from their players’ benches after the period ends and prior to the start of an altercation, they shall not be penalized if they remain in the vicinity of their players’ bench and SECTION 6 – PHYSICAL FOULS NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE OFFICIAL RULES 2021-2022 78 provided they do not get involved in any altercations.

    And

70.10 Fines and Suspensions – The first player to leave the players’ or penalty bench illegally during an altercation or for the purpose of starting an altercation from either or both teams shall be suspended automatically without pay for the next ten (10) regular League and/or Play-off games of his team.

There is nothing wrong with Pietrangelo leaving the penalty box (assuming he was let out- there is an issue that the timekeeper should have held him in until the skirmish was over). The issue is that he needed to head straight to the bench. Instead he went straight in and engaged a Panthers player before anyone engaged with him. It's not Vegas hate, it's literally just asking the rules to be applied. The NHL rules determine the penalty box and bench to be one and the same at the end of a period. I believe the Hockey Canada rules are even more clear with it being an automatic penalty to leave the box if there is a fight on the ice whether you get involved or not.

Wasn’t the game over when he left the penalty box?  I’m pretty sure they opened the door for him…

Doesn’t matter. It’s equivalent to leaving the bench to join a scrum at the end of the game. Rules state you have to go straight off. Instead he skated to the opposite blue line and got involved.

Only question which the footage isn’t clear on is did he initiate anything before getting tangled with Tkachuk.

I don’t believe they got game misconducts so they would be eligible to play next game.  Based on Tkachuk’s stick swinging like an axe to Pietrangelo’s neck and legs they may take a look at that as a suspension.  But he will probably play game 5, he’s injured anyways so he won’t have much of an affect on the next game.  Vegas should be able to take it at home unless goalie Bob plays like Dominik Hasek…

That’s fineable but not suspendable. If you want an axe swing watch Pietrangelo vs the Oilers. Lots of talk about a clip with Pietrangelo leaving the box and slew footing Tkachuk which set that off although find it interesting that I can’t find the clip.

Can't have your head down like that hunched forward and take no responsibility.

His head is barely down. I love watching hits like that for entertainment value but the NHL has changed the rules so responsibility is on the hitter.

Trouba comes blindside and hit is high enough that even an upright meiers would have taken it face first.

There’s a reason no one else hits like Trouba and it’s because they’d be tossed.

Easily a head hit, if that was Myers he'd be gone so quick. All he has to do is push a guy and it's a misconduct

This is what f*cks me off. Trouba is always head hunting but gets a free pass. I love old school hockey but he’s going to end someone’s career coming in from the side like that and almost always hitting the head first.

guys like Myers are meanwhile are instantly tossed despite being even taller.

Well guess what. If Bruins advance (which I'm sure they will) they are going to kill off the leafs swiftly.

It took almost 2 decades for Toronto to win a playoff series. they won't win another until 2043.

I wouldn’t be so sure. The Bruins v Leafs games have been pretty tight and Leafs will be riding a high with weight off their shoulders.

I’m hoping Florida go through so I don’t have to cheer for the Leafs.

Makar was shoulder on shoulder. Sure it was a really late hit, but it wasn't a break a players neck hit. Makar deserved the suspension as it was totally unnecessary.

Cogs was facing the boards, 3 feet away playing the puck and it wasn't one of those types of hits where the player turned at the last second when he saw the hit coming. Eberle definitely did not hit him from the side, he hit him square in the numbers. One day, that will end someone's quality of life if the NHL allows those to be 2 minute minors. I 100% disagree with you, it's a major and a suspension. Suspensions shouldn't be determined by if the player was injured or not.

The hit from Makar was fine but when a player isn’t even thinking about getting hit it’s just as dangerous as the outcome showed with McCanns injury. I thought that should have been much more than one game. If that had been someone like Wilson rather than Makar he’d be done for the playoffs.

Looks like the NHL agrees with my assessment as no hearing to occur (although DOPS isn’t exactly the standard bearer for consistency)

Btw I don’t like the hit. Think it’s predatory and unnecessary. I just don’t think it meets the criteria for a major or suspension because of where he made contact and Cogs dropping his head last second making it look substantially worse.

In my mind this is why the NHL needs enforcers back- way too many gutless hits occurring these days because players aren’t scared to make them.
