True, people don't realize how much smaller guys were in the older days. Pete Mahovlich (6'5") was basically Chara in the 60s and 70s.

That said, it's worthy of note that the average height hasn't really increased over the past 25 years or so, so there's definitely a change in the trend.

I am guessing the 'average' height has not increased due to an increase in smaller forwards playing regular hockey.

The median height could see an increase, given the overall increase in height for all players (greater spectrum).

It's the reason I am more interested in median house prices, rather than average. If not properly accounted for, outliers effect the average significantly.

Very true, but like I said, all bodies are different, I never went beyond community hockey, but my friend was drafted by the oilers (played BU) but my legs are twice as big as his because he is just naturally very skinny. He played and trained way harder than me. Hes 175 lbs at his heaviest and 6’. Im 210 and 6’. So really in the end unless he's going to use steroids I doubt hell ever be that ‘big’ which is ok if he learns to use his speed and hockey IQ now that he’s been figured out in this league.

True. Just saying hockey is mostly leg strength and stamina - size and weight regardless.

Strongest guys I played against were always the sinew based farm kids - traps up to their ears.

He doesn’t have the physical make up to be like Crosby, he is slight of frame. Look at his head and body. He’s similar build to Brandon Sutter maybe even slimmer. Some people just can’t put on that kind of weight without chemical help and even then I'm sure it would mess with his body movement and skill.

Every pro that I've stepped on the ice with has had a massive trunk. One of their legs usually equals the entire lower body of a regular Sam.

I'd be shocked if Pete hasn't been focusing on lower body and core - that's the power centre for hockey. Traps, lats, pecks, bis and tris are secondary. Even junior 'B' kids focus on legs. Glutes, quads and hammies, that's where the money hits the dirt.

It's strength, not weight. Classic old school farm boy made of sinew, or the fire hydrant tank guy (aka - Crosby). The muscle beach guys are easy to play against, cause they can't move very well, and usually their centre of gravity is off cause they work upper body way too much.

  4. I think he's still healing up. Matthew's as well.

Wrist injuries can take a long time. There's - your better and you can wipe your own butt - and then there's better and you can dangle pucks and rifle lasers at top speed. could explain his trials at face offs - or that's just something that Bo and Dick need to pound in to him.

maybe he's still recovering from long haul covid - who knows.

Big fan of AM, my point was simply if your going to use Petey having a rough start as proof AM is better then him than using AMs horrible start is only fair.

Peteys first 2 seasons and playoffs were not that far off of AM, last season AM was better but not exactly fair since Petey miss 30+ games and was on a role.

People get far to worked up over small sample sizes, apart from 8 games last season Petey has been basically a ppg. It is obvious that he is a step behind and not playing since February and missing most of camp will do that.

Thankfully we don't rely on him as much as the leafs rely on AM.

    Both had wrist problems???

could be fighting the same injury demons. some wrist bones structures take long time to heal - range of motion.?

Well Hoglander's there too.  Guy takes a licking at times but keeps on ticking.  Was a bit worried about that last hit on the boards but he came right back...disheveled, pads hanging out but still in the play.  He's going to make great things happen for us.

I have been trying to place who Garland reminds me of. Brayden Point comes to mind, but that's not it - then it hit me.

I think Ronning and Courtnall had an offspring - the ronning spinning, shifting, passing, mobility, and the courtnall straight ahead speed, hunched shoulders, shoving his way in there, punch you in the face.

    I'll call him Connor Rontnall.

    Wow what a shootout.

    JTs move was amazing.

I would normally be ecstatic but that was such a bush league job by the refs and the NHL.

There's something wrong with the sport when Hirsh says Canucks have to be careful because they are up 4-2 with a PP opps advantage and that refs are looking to make a call on them.

Canucks need to bear down during those times. I thought that's why we went with vets?

Hirsch made me miss John Garrett - less Hirsch please...

    Chiasson was solid last night

That’s the ideal lineup I think. Chiasson is too slow to be a regular. And Podzilla needs to be freed.

Chaisson was solid - in good spots - but of all the canucks, to me he did look the slowest. not sure he has the foot speed for top 6.

Maybe anchors on the 4th when BB returns... ? perhaps could keep up on  the 3rd, be a big body

An undersized 26 year old AHLer D man in burroughs (weighs 10 lbs less than the average NHLer) with few NHL games actually makes our opening roster?

    Not a good sign.

Hopefully the other good things Benning did out weighs this and green's weird coaching.

From what I saw the kid skates real good, has a good outlet and was in good position. Three very important skills for an NHL d-man.

Has the ship really sailed? Dont think teams will be up for messing with their rosters right before the season. Free agents look bleak…

Hopefully we go the Tampa route - have too many skilled forwards - trade one of them akin to Drouin for someone like Sergachev, then be so good and so stable in our salary and team structure that we can bring in top level defenders to fill our defensive holes.

    That's hoping.

Ya know, the more I think about this the more I start to believe we’re actually in a favourable position. All of our top solid prospects are playing with the club already (Podz, Hogz and Boner) which is ideal. If Podz or Boner are sent to the farm then so be it. At least they’ll have had a good taste of the NHL game which should provide even more drive to return.

We’re just about to restock the farm with fresh blood over the next couple years and have now assessed and purged a few guys who had potential but are also potentially in the way of the “next gen” of prospects.

The cupboard has been emptied a bit but being restocked with Klimovich, who will now get decent ice time and a real chance to excel, is a boon. Plus another year of Woo. It’s not all that bad.

This is the kind of problem I like having as a Nux fan. Sometimes you just have to start fresh.

It seems to me, that in the new NHL, most prospects spend little to no time in the A. Some of the stronger teams might have a few guys lurking and developing in the minors, but generally top talent goes straight to the show.

The NCAA route seems to be the chosen path for prospect maturation and development, rather than the A.

From what I heard from the Toronto folks is that Nylander was that Nylander was one of the better performers during the playoffs. Backcheck or not Nylander is solidified himself as a playoff performer.

Agreed. The Leafs are my least favourite team, and I find it easy to dislike most, if not all of their players.

Last year in the playoffs though, I thought Nylander and Matthews were their best players.

You heard Schenn talk about all the new faces and the importance of getting to know a defensive partner well before the season starts. Others have said the same thing. In that light it seems preposterous to sit out a barely experienced Dman for most of the pre-season.

It's apparent to me that Juolevi can't be expected to step in cold and mesh with any of the other defensemen, not just because he hasn't played with them but also because he hasn't connected with them on a personal level. And now I don't think he can. I suspect it's not just Green who can't quite hide his disdain for a fellow athlete who behaves in such an unseemly way as he did after the bag skate. He might as well have had his pants around his ankles for how it came across.

Hard to find chemistry with anyone on any level after that, sorry to say.

I recall Juolevi saying after he was drafted that he was the smartest player in his draft class, so I guess he'll be fine... ; )

  14. These are very good amounts moving forward. Well done Jim.

If EP turns in to the player he thinks he can be, he'll get paid and then some in three years.

QH value is decent - he can grow in to the defensive aspects - but his offensive skills alone are almost worth his yearly.

Now, get healthy Brock and let's see what this group can do.

Are we in for a bunch of 7-5 games this year?

Watch this be like when Nylander held out till the very last minute and the leafs caved in

If the EP and QH contracts end up being like Nylander's and not Marner's the Canucks would be in good shape.

It's hard to tell who actually caved in that situation. People scoffed at Nylander's contract but he was arguable one of the best Laughs in the last playoffs.

It seems like a broader inflationary mindset/climate that plagues my grocery bills has infected NHL salary payouts and projections.
