Yeah the whole covid situation I imagine didn't help that. Lol. I dunno. I still think it's a fine trade. People wanking off over Guenther also complain about us adding wingers all the time. The best D in that area went 1 pick before the 9th. After that no D were taken til 25. So it really wasn't a huge loss of a pick. It aged poorly, for sure. But I still blame the inept team building. We can't keep adding wingers and be mad that the defence sucks or complain about lack of cap space, as we keep pouring what little cap we have into more wingers.

I get your point but wingers are still assets and they can be dealt to acquire players in other positions such as D men.

  2. I’ve been a Canucks fan for their entire existence and this is the worst I’ve felt ever.  Much worse than the Keenan/Messier era.  At least with the Linden trade we got some valuable pieces back including Todd Bertuzzi (re the birth of the WCE era).

It’s just more and more of the same with little hope for the future (lack of a solid prospect pool, no cap space, etc.). I find myself fast forwarding through my recorded games. A lead consistently turns into a loss.

For the past 10 years or so, there’s been no focus (the “no plan plan” as Ray Ferraro had said). Recently, management appears to have casted aside Bo, their Captain, and criticized a coach that had turned around a team spiraling downward.

In my opinion, the bubble Canucks were an anomaly as the only reason they survived was because of spectacular goaltending (the shots against were  terrible then and they still are). They haven’t addressed their defensive shortcomings.

I don’t see a light on the horizon.  I was hoping for a cup before I die but that seems unlikely unless there is a clear change of direction. The owner seems content with mediocrity provided they can maybe squeak into the playoffs. I don’t want any more of that.

I’m still supporting the Canucks as I always have. For now though, I will be cheering on the other Canadian based teams in the hope that one will lift the cup in 2023 for the first time since 1993.

  3. Great game Canucks!  Great to see Spencer Martin get another win. He deserves the next start.

The defensive structure was actually good tonight unlike most other nights.

Lazar (a Salmon Arm boy) is the type of player we needed for the board battles. We missed him when he was injured. Mikheyev is good defensively too.

Ethan Bear is looking solid and had a nice goal. A good pick up from Carolina.

Another good game by Petterson, Hughes and Schenn. Myers needs to avoid taking those unnecessary penalties.

Anyway, I really liked to see the improved defensive play. Now, can they repeat that in Vegas.

I feel like losing our assistant coaches (Brad Shaw & Scott Walker) were a massive deal and is probably a reason why we aren't playing well. On paper, we're by far a playoff team, but there literally is no structure. Felt like last year atleast we had some structure and our defense was actually pretty good. Anyone else feel the same way? Would love to hear other opinions!

The fans were misled that we had a playoff team.

For the past couple of years, I’ve felt the same - this team is not good enough and they would be lucky to squeak into a playoff spot.  The 40 to 45 shots a night against was not a recipe for success. Markstrom and Demko saved our bacon night after night.

We are a soft team to play against. Weak on the boards and we lose too many puck battles. Also, we need a young big strong true top 2-3 RHD (and that’s not a shot at Schenn who I like). We need at least one more good young top 4 D. We need stronger wingers who will win puck battles and come away with loose pucks. Then, maybe with some good complementary players (like Kuzmenko) and one of Horvat or Miller to play centre with EP, maybe then we could be a solid playoff contender. I’d definitely keep Hughes too (D like that don’t come around often).  We also need much stronger team defence.

If we don’t make those changes (through the draft and trades) unfortunately, we are destined for more pain.

By the way, after following this team for 52 years, I hope I’m wrong and this team can turn it around without having to do a rebuild. This is just my opinion.

What rebuild in the past 20 years has been in the 2-3 range year mark? Can’t think of any of the top of my head.

LA, Rangers, Detroit and Montreal are rebuilding quickly and they look pretty good - at least contending for a playoff spot. I’d be happy with any of their rosters.

With a revitalized Demko, Hughes and EP, I think we should at least have a playoff team in 2 to 3 years. This is assuming that we have a couple of top 5 to 15 1st round picks in the next few years.

And look at what happened when we let tanev, markstrom, toffoli, edler go.

    And Stecher.

What really really bothers me is not that we lost all of them but we lost all of them for nothing - no returns.

If possible, I would have tried to keep some of those guys. Keeping Tanev, Stecher and Toffoli would’ve been good for veteran leadership for our young players.

It is sure going to be interesting to see what happens this next year or two.

I sure hope it will be interesting because it hasn’t been very interesting for the past year. I expected more from JR and PA. Signing Miller for 7 more years was their biggest mistake so far. Should have traded JT for a top 2 or 3 RHD or at least a prospect and 1st round pick. I would keep Bo if possible though as I think he would be harder to replace.

I continue to hope as I’ve done for the past 52 years but I don’t think this team is constructed well enough to make the playoffs let alone contend for a cup.

I’d be OK with a rebuild.  I’d keep Hughes and EP and maybe Demko (assuming he rebounds) but everybody else is expendable.

    Details:

Vancouver, B.C. - Vancouver Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin announced today that the club has agreed to terms with right wing Brock Boeser on a 3-year contract worth 6.65 million per season.

"We're very happy to have worked out a new deal for Brock" said Allvin. "He is a very talented player and has been an effective goal scorer throughout his entire career. We look forward to seeing his game progress in the years to come. Now that his contract is in place for three seasons, Brock can shift his entire focus to his on-ice performance."

Boeser, 25, recorded 46 points (23-23-46) in 71 games last season, eclipsing the 20-goal mark for the fourth time in five seasons. He also tied the team lead with six game-winning goals in 2021.22 and ranked second among Canucks skaters with 11 power play goals, establishing new career-highs in both categories.

In 324 regular season games over six career seasons with Vancouver, the 6'1", 208-pound forward has collected 256 points (121-135-256) and 88 penalty minutes. Boeser also appeared in 17 career playoff games for the Canucks in 2019.20, ranking fifth in team-scoring with 11 points (4-7-11).

Boeser has led or co-led the Canucks in scoring twice in his career to earn the Cyrus H. McLean Trophy (2017.18 & 2020.21) and was also named the recipient of the Cyclone Taylor Trophy (most valuable player) and Pavel Bure Award (most exciting player) in his rookie season in 2017.18. That same season, he was named a finalist for the Calder Memorial Trophy as the League's best rookie and became the first rookie since Mario Lemieux in 1984.85 to be named MVP of the NHL All-Star Game.

A native of Burnsville, Minnesota, Boeser was originally selected by Vancouver in the first round, 23rd overall in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft.

This is a good contract for all concerned and I expect Brock to have a strong season.

Miller for Lafreniere 1-for-1 would be this generation's Nieuwendyk for Iginla.

True.  That would be a good comparison.

That would be a good trade for us but I can't see the Rangers parting with Lafreniere.

Lafreniere has performed well in the playoffs this year and he is only 20 years old.  I don't know why a young Rangers team would want to give up on him now.  I see Miller going to a team that is already a Stanley Cup contender (or at least a top 6 team).  I don't think the Rangers are quite there yet but they are close.

I know that we really need D prospects but a Lafreniere  trade for Miller would be too good to turn down (anytime you can add assets that can be kept or traded is a good thing).  We need to get additional young players that fit in with the age of our core.

  10. I disagree with all the hate directed at Myers. You need to put the salary aside. Our D would be much worse without him. I double checked and he has the best +- on the team at +16. Schenn is next at +13 then Hughes at +7.

Like all our D, Myers has the odd gaff but he is solid defensively all things considered. I hope we keep him next season. Plus we need his size and he is a good skater.

Is he?  Are the Canucks prepared to sign the extensive contract that you think he'll require?

A competitive player like JT will want to go to a contender or a team that is at least a respectable

playoff team.  He's not signing with any of the bottom feeders, that's for sure.

I don’t know about that. Things can change quickly (look at LA & Anaheim).

For a player’s last contract, it’s all about the money usually.

I can see them offering Bo something in the 6 to 6.5 range over 6 or 7 years.

I think it would be closer to 7 annual average to keep Bo given his scoring, faceoff percentage, versatility, etc. I just don’t think under 7 gets it done (but that would be great if it did).

I’d sooner pay Bo 7 mill rather than pay Brock 7 (any day).

  13. Disappointing loss.  Time for rebuild-lite.

Keep Petterson, Hughes, Demko, Horvat and maybe Miller (so so on Boeser). I’d like to keep Garland if we can.

After the losses this weekend, the playoffs are a pipe dream.

It’s too bad but reality has caught up with us even though the boys pushed hard under Boudreau.

We need stronger D, more size, speed and grit.

I can trade Miller but not Motte.

    Can’t we keep both please?

I was listening to Donnie & Dhali and some misinformed person texted in that players like Motte are a dime a dozen. From my many years of watching hockey (and playing beer league), that is so wrong.

I wish we had a few more Mottes on the team. He drives that 4th line and I think he has helped Lammiko and Highmore improve their game. I love that 4th line as does Boudreau.

  15. Good game but a slow start. Without some A1 saves by Demko, the Caps could’ve run away with it (sorry Alf).

Good game by Bo and Hamonic. Not impressed with Hogs taking needless penalties in the offensive zone. He needs to be stronger on the boards.

Love the big hits by Schenn. The D played pretty good. Goofy reaction from Kuznetsov when he flops down on the Myers hit.  His flappy wings need to be clipped.  I guess Myers isn’t allowed to hit anyone.

Just disappointed that we couldn’t close the game down and get the 2 points but we made a great comeback and got the single point.

And his $9mish cap hit won't allow management to put good players around him and they flounder around in mediocrity

Yep. You’re damned if you do (sign him @ 9 mill per for long term) and damned if you don’t sign him (given the production he delivers).

In the perfect world, we only sign him for  4 or 5 years.  But this isn’t a perfect world. Why would he sign here for 9 mill for 4 years when, on the open market, he could get 9 mill per year for 6 or 7 years (or longer)?
