thats part of the reason i think Khaira is a solid addition. Edmonton has been 2nd and then 9th on the PK in the last two years. Khaira was 4th amongst Oilers forwards in SH TOI/GP in 2019-2020 and 2nd amognst Oilers forwards last year - PKing between 1:30-2:00 mins per game

It's not quite Beagle levels, but it's more than most suitable options have accomplished IMO

Don’t mind that at all. Hometown kid who has size and energy. As long as he stays away from fighting he could be very useful.

  2. What’s our penalty killing depth look like? So far we have Motte and Dickinson manning the first unit. Have to think Horvat/Miller will get some time in the PK role for their faceoffs. Highmore should see some time there and it all depends if we can groom Pearson/Hog/Pod into some PK time as well. The only thing that worries me is Motte’s health so if we aren’t comfortable with our depth we should go for a strictly defensive PK center who could preferably win faceoffs well. Not opposed to Sutter at the right price but he has injury concerns as well.

Would really like to sign Getzlaf tho. His size and toughness would be welcomed in the bottom 6 and he has that Corey Perry veteran effect of a proven winner. He could also help our power play as well whether it be leading the 2nd unit or being set up man for our shooters on the 1st unit. Still has that elite vision and passing.

I wonder how much Kypreos was paid to give that rumor some legs. I didn't think Benning would jeopardize the situation going forward by taking on that contract now. I still hope his last statements about the defense are still accurate, that he's looking to add size and strength. W

Benning has always been the type to show his hand before playing it so it concerns me. Is there a situation where we get OEL and Arizona retains salary?

  4. Travis Green line combos make little to no sense most of the time to me. The defense is another story because right now it looks unfixable. But last year Travis made some decent adjustments to the lineup after we had injuries up front that actually produced well. Why didn’t he stick with those lineups and give them a fair shot all the way through? Miller/Petey/Virtanen was a line that was working once upon a time. I know rewarding an inconsistent player with more ice time isn’t sending the best message, but Jake is actually useless anywhere else. Also Zac MacEwan was working well playing with Bo in their limited time together last year, we need more big bodies in the top 6 to create some room for our star players. Would also be nice to see Justin Bailey in the lineup, he brings size and speed that we definitely need over Roussel. Doesn’t have to be a permanent change but we need to at least try to shake things up.

    Miller - Petey - Virtanen

    Hoglander - Horvat - MacEwan

    Motte - Sutter/Gaud - Boeser

    Pearson - Beagle - Bailey

    Just a rough idea.

  5. I do like the offense that Barrie brings and think he would fit well in Green’s system but at what cost? I haven’t seen him play enough but will his defensive game hold up? I think the Canucks need a more physical defensive dman with mobility. Historically we win Cups with bigger, physical defense. I’m fine with giving up a bottom 6 forward and Stetcher but we can’t afford to give up more draft picks before we don’t have any left. Assuming we do trade for him. Maybe looking forward to next year if you want to re-sign Barrie, you try and get a hometown discount, get Tyramkin back, and cut Myers loose?

  6. Roussel - Our 3rd line finally has an identity now with him back and he brings a veterans presence to Gaud and Jake. Having 3 lines that can score is huge.

Fantanberg - Rarely do I see him making mistakes and right now he fits our system better than Jordie Benn.

Wouldn’t call him an unsung hero but would just like to mention that Myers has been playing pretty good as of late and I hope he keeps it up. It was frustrating watching him make stupid pinches but when he doesn’t make those 3-4 blunders a game he’s solid.

    Ok three things here.

    1) it was Chris pronger who actually said last year that it takes most nhl defensemen until they’re twenty five to fully get the position at the nhl level. So if you’re saying I know nothing about the game because of that quote apparently nether does he. I’ve been associated with the game for over thirty years so if you think me and pronger know nothing about hockey, good for you.

    2) calling Myers a thirty point defensemen his absolutely hysterical. Yeah bud, on the jets one of the highest scoring teams in the league. If Myers gets over 15 I’ll be shocked. Again I’ve watched him live and on buffalo literally hundreds of times, so thanks for reading his stats and telling me about a player I’ve known for years.

    3) not gonna argue it’s an upgrade over gudbranson but Miller and Myers are no saviours their just depth. DOnt tell someone what they know about hockey after a quote about a position. Especially when that comes from a guy who played over 1,000 games at that position and was one of the very best at it ever.

Making the NHL and being in your prime are completely different. So by your logic  we should wait 6 years until Hughes joins the club? Idk man he brings a lot of offensive elements that we NEED. Myers is a 30 point defenseman whether you like it or not. Idc how many times you’ve seen him play, the numbers on the stat sheet tell you that. He was putting up points in Buffalo too. The seasons where he didn’t achieve that he missed a lot of games and was on or close to a 30pt pace. I never said Myers was some god defensively, he is prone to mistakes but the size and offense he brings helps us a lot imo. Go ahead and think over 15 is a stretch and we’ll agree to disagree I guess.

Huge? Adding J.T. Miller a guy who can barely crack fifty points on the top line of the best scoring team in the league is going to come to Vancouver and suddenly light it up with less points then eriksson when we signed did and produce even better,? and a full year out of a 19 year old defensemen? Are you serious? It takes until they’re 25 (most of them) u too they get the job at the pro level. dahlin did amazing and was the second best 18 yr olD dman  inn NHL history and it did little to turn buffalo around. Hughes can be amazing but it’s going to take more then that. Myers was a god awful contract he sucks I watched him live on Kelowna and on buffalo and after year one his play fell off a cliff he isn’t worth three million let alone six. fetland  was a good one and we’re on the right track but sorry jt miller is no messiah and Hughes is a 19 ur old dman. Not that huge.

Miller has been a consistent 40+ point player for the past 5 years or so. You gonna act like those points aren’t gonna make us better? Myers is a 30+ point defenseman, even tho he isn’t the best in his own end he’s still a major upgrade over Hutton and Gudbranson. People who actually watched Hughes play know he can be a difference maker. The fact that you think it takes dmen(especially a top 10 pick) till age 25 to make the NHL shows you know nothing about hockey.

As I pointed out. Because of special teams usage mostly Penalty killing and the way he plays so hard. He can’t play 25mins a game. He can play comfortably at 18ish mins.

also him playing 3rd line well rounds out the whole team.

Playoffs he’ll probably be moved up the line up and get tons of ice time.

No forward in the NHL is playing 25 mins a game...

  10. I think both players can move to the wing if need be but I see Madden as more of a center. From what I’ve seen he’s very good defensively and it seems he has more offensive/playmaking upside. If either of these guys don’t pan out like we hope there is still a 4th line role for them. As for Hoglander, he seems like a guy you can plug in anywhere and he can be effective.

  11. I think Green was brought in to develop the young guys and so far he has done a pretty good job. It would be unfair to put the blame on his shoulders for the last few seasons but at the same time he still has things he’s gotta work on. As long as he can learn from his mistakes and keeps this team ascending there will be more pressure for him to get this team to the playoffs and win some series the next few years. His job should be secure for the next 1-2 years and if this team isn’t producing I wouldn’t be opposed to finding a replacement.

    Just curious.

What part of my post do people specifically disagree with?   I see a lot of memes, sarcastic responses, and confused emoticons, but do not see much in the way of constructive criticism.

Do the posters disagreeing with me not believe that our bottom 6 would very likely be weak if we went with....

    [Ferland-Miller]-Pettersson-Boeser

    Pearson-Horvat-[Ferland-Miller]

As our top 6, which would leave with us any of the following combinations as our 3rd line (which I believe would be hardpressed to produce consistent offense).

    [Baertschi/Eriksson/Leivo]-[Gaudette-Sutter]-[Virtanen/Eriksson/Leivo]

I’m open to suggestions on why I should feel otherwise.

Or - do people disagree with my comments relating to Hughes (ie by the looks of things, Management is expecting Hughes to do big things fairly soon because he’s being given the 2nd pairing LD role right away......and will be expected to substitute immediately in the top pairing should Edler go down).

You lost me when you said 2 of 3 (Miller/Ferland/Pearson) need to be on the 3rd line. That is putting too much of our toughness/grit on 1 line we need to balance it out some more. Our offense can be more balanced but that is assuming Baer/Goldy can play top 6. For all we know Leivo could develop good chemistry with Sutter/Gaudette/Virtanen and give that line some punch and if it isn’t working out I’m sure Green has a plan. He juggles his lines more than any coach in the league it feels like, at least on a night to night basis.

  13. I try not to get too high or too low on our cap situation. I’m confident that Petey/Hughes/Boeser love playing here and might take a pay cut but I’m not banking on it. They will still wanna get paid big if they put up numbers in the next couple years.
