Myers over the course of his career has averaged 22 minutes a night which is pretty amazing for a guy who’s suspect in his own end, makes some huge gaffes, takes a lot of penalties and isn’t great on the PK or the PP.

This isn’t to slam the guy - I just think in a reduced role he could actually look pretty good. He’s been deployed as a top 3 d his whole career.  Let the guy play 3rd pair against easier competition and let him cook.

Myers is also a victim of circumstance or whatever you want to call it. Him and OEL together were terrible, absolutely terrible. But it doesn't mean they are individually that bad. Both of them need to have a reduced role and they can still be effective players. I wish Myers was paid $4.5m, and then we could actually justify dropping his minutes down to 14 minutes per game where I think he woudnt be as noticeably bad.

No thank you. Too small, too average. Big hearts and good intentions do not necessarily translate to success in NHL. They just make you cheer and feel sorry for the guy who can't keep the puck out of his own net.

I've said this many times, Stetcher type players are average in regular season, but come playoffs these are the guys you need for a long run

He's gonna surprise all the haters here.  Just cuz he wasn't worth 7m+ playing top shut down minutes, doesn't mean he won't be super effective as a bottom tier guy making 2.25m

Well of course! Everyone here would have been happy with OEL at 2.25m. You're statement makes no sense.

It wont surprise anyone one bit if he is a super effective player getting 2.25m, because that's what he is and should be. Folks can hate him at 7m and love him at 2.25m because those are two complete different paychecks. Lol. Doesn't prove "the haters" wrong in any way

Oh man, I will say he seems to make sudden turns along the boards to shake attackers, which works out, but he turns his back quite often to oncoming players putting himself in a very vulnerable position. I hope a coach picks up on this and helps him protect himself better before he gets seriously injured.

Miller shows personality, often in a frustrated way just like Binnington.

The only way the Blues would be happy about this is it helps the tank.

Seriously? Saying how Miller expresses personality is the same is Binnington is way off.

Miller often takes his frustration out on himself, not saying I like it, but it's nowhere near as bad as Binnington having a full on temper tantrum, getting thrown out of games and intentionally trying to hurt players. He is such a joke.

A shame to see him get suspended, he's the only goalie in the league that shows any personality.

Thats not showing personality. JT Miller shows personality. A blocker punch to an unsuspecting player for incidental contact is just dirty and gutless. If they dont suspend him now, it only encourages him to continue.

I wouldnt be surprised if the Blues are secretly happy about this. Get him and his garbage save percentage off the ice for a couple games.

That's the best case for the club.   If OEL can bounce back, then we've already found a top four D.    And maybe OEL/Hronek  becomes a solid pairing for us like Hamhuis/Beiksa.    QHs is so good now, we could play him with anyone almost.    Still need to find one more D to truly compete.    We've got a glut of 5-7 guys.

    Exactly,

Maybe folks dont remember, but there was a period of time where Hughes went down (I think it was 2 seasons ago). OEL was moved onto PP1, and they moved him away from shut down guy, and back to puck moving offensive D. He was like a totally different player, racking up points.

I'm not saying OEL is going to turn it around and become amazing, but I do think if given different minutes against other teams weaker lines, he could still bea positive rather than a negative for a couple more years.

Ok what specifically on this roster needs to change for us to be a good team?

    Like let's get detailed here

    Forwards? What needs to change?

Only question mark is Miller @ 2C for me but even that seems ok. I don't think his improved play is a mirage. I think it's a byproduct of good coaching.

Demko is a top 5 goalie.

    That leaves defense.

Hughes is getting better and better. Hronek was a legit top 4 add.

We're missing 2 more legit top 4 D? OEL and Myers.... Can either play the 4D and the other slide down to 5D and anchor 3rd pairing?

Can we grab one more legit top 4 dmen this summer?

I personally think that's all we really need.

That and the PK needs to improve and then we are actually quite a good team

We're definitely missing a legit 3C. Strong faceoff guy who defends well and can take heat away from our top two lines.

We're missing a top 6 scoring winger for the second line. Garland and Boeser aren't getting it done. Mikhyev should be the guy but he hasn't been around long enough to prove that one. Podz hasn't shown it quite yet.

We are missing a true, stay at home shut down defenseman. Like Tanev. Hamhuis, Bieksa type player. Reliable, stays back, makes hits to break up the rush.

Then we are missing 1 or 2 young guys who are on entry level contracts to become a nice surprise and play above their pay grade to save on cap space. We don't have any of those. That's why drafting is still important in a retool.

You need cheap contracts for skilled players filling roles.

It’s a tough time for Canucks fans who grew up watching so many toughies on the club. There were times when our team was feared. So many goons over the years. And then that stopped, but at least we had guys who were still tough as nails and could throw them with most toughies.
Now with Schenn gone, I look at this line-up and sure, there might be some guys who could protect themselves against regular-class toughies. But WHO is the toughest Canuck right now? Who is most likely to win a fight? If a team gets nasty on Hughes or Petey, who is there to put opposition in its place?
This is a priority piece that continually gets pushed aside. I know the game has changed. But look around. Most teams still have real toughies who can play too. We have nobody who can regularly win fights and create intimidation.
I’m sick of how easy it is to push this team around. We need more toughies!

    IMHO

The issue isn't toughness in response to things happening to Canucks payers. (well thats part of it)....

The issue is we don't have any players that initiate the toughness, forcing other teams to defend themselves, look over their shoulder etc.

Rarely are we the ones that drive the physical play, or make the big hit. To me, the issue is we have no one who goes around playing physical and forcing other teams to take notice.

I want us to take the initiative, not respond to. Example look how Myers took the initiative and dumped Tavares. That was amazing and told Toronto that they cant walk all over us.

    We need that.

The 2 biggest reasons we are where we are is our defense and penalty kill. We’ve already improved our defense with Hronek and our penalty kill is/has improved since Tocchet took over. Lots of skill at the top of the lineup and obivously Hughes and Demko in the back. It wouldnt be completely outrageous to claim that next year with the hopeful editions of Livingstone and a top 6/7 pick that we could be a playoff team. The cap seems to be our only obstacle.

And our shoddy goaltending, which seems to have turned a corner!
