Racism? When? What thread? Seems like an excuse to me.

The easiest way to shut down discourse you don't like is to claim that it is offensive. I am surprised any of the other 'phobias' weren't thrown around to cover all the bases.

all team sites are powered by the NHL.  It,literally, says NHL.comin the top left corner

The Canucks official website is under the domain nhl.com, but the forum is under the domain name canucks.com. Its literally right there in your search bar. Again if the NHL was the one shutting down forums then they would have closed all of them down at once and not left some alive and closed down others.

I'd say the NHL would be more on the hook than Aquilini

The forum is under the domain canucks.com, its not under nhl.com. Lots of teams don't have forums or have closed their forums ages ago. The NHL wasn't the one that forced those teams to close their forums.

  4. The Jackets and their management look awful in all of this. They hired Babcock despite his history. Then when first sign of misconduct was reported, it took them a day to put out that statement supporting Babcock. They showed their players that don't actually care about their well being. They also made their captain to look like a weak leader and a shill for management. The same goes for the NHLPA, their primary responsibility is to their union members but they too initially chose to side with the team.

There are no winners in this scenario except maybe the guys that broke this story. I actually don't think Babcock meant any ill intent when this all went down. I think he is just an out of touch 60 year old man, who does not understand that there is a way to do this without making people uncomfortable. If he understood the way the kids in this generation use technology he would not have put them on the spot and asked them to pull up images on their phones. The way to do this was to speak to the players before hand, ask them to send the photos that they were comfortable with sharing to the IT department so they could set up a meeting where everyone got to know each other. I think Babcock is done after this debacle there is no way he gets another job in the NHL again.

Is it just me, or is Horvat working on building back some equity with Canucks fans before he returns to play us?

I think he cares more about his former teammates than he is worried about his perception among us. I hate to say it but the relationship between players and fans is transactional, there is no real benefit for Horvat to seek our approval anymore.

Nope. You’re wrong. Petey is new to English. That’s a fact. His comment, that you’re using as evidence to stir up trouble, showed he’s an English as a second language speaker. The Captaincy wasn’t offered. If it was he said he would need to take time to consider it. This interview you’re quoting took place very soon after we traded Bo. Clearly the club wasn’t making the Captaincy decision at that point.

I agree with you that I highly doubt that Pettersson wasn't offered the captaincy but I think you are going too far Alf. Petey is a young Swede, just about all of them are excellent at English. If it weren't for their accent you wouldn't even know that they weren't native speakers. Petey is certainly not 'new to English'. He is a careful speaker and that's not because of a language barrier, he just gives thoughtful answers to any questions that he is asked and he is not someone that is really comfortable in front of a camera. If you listen to the Friedman interview a few days earlier he said himself that he especially enjoys speaking to Petey describing him as 'cerebral' even during their conversations.

  7. Kravtsov now with 1G 3A in 4 games, pretty strong start. Still think there is some potential here and the KHL is not a bad place for him to develop him game. The NHL is not a development league and Kravtsov at this point is nothing but a role player. Rather than just floating around for a couple of years, its best that he goes somewhere he can play meaningful minutes. Nichushkin is a good example of a guy going back working on his game and coming back to the NHL a much better player. Had he stayed I doubt he develops into anything more than a bit part player.

Of course you get the typical cliched posts whenever a Russian player does decide to head back, "he wasn't willing to do what it takes so he took his ball and went home'. In some cases it is definitely true but in others the player in question is giving up a bigger paycheque and temporarily putting the dream to play in the NHL on hold to go back home and actually work on his game.

Most of these guys come over far too soon based on advice from their agents, and fail to acclimate to NA. I would have said Podz could have stayed a little longer, but SKA is just a tough place for young players, so its probably best that he did come over when he did.

So the Canucks lose early because we don't have a designated practice facility?

    Not because of the schedule?

How did you get that from my post?

If a practice facility wasn't an advantage then teams wouldn't spend millions building one. The Canucks going to the Finals in 1982, 1994 and 2011 is a poor argument for why one is not needed. The Canucks having a poor start could have to do with a number of factors, one of which could be the lack of a practice facility but it is not the sole determining factor obviously.

  9. 19 hours ago, Ghostsof1915 said:

The Canucks did not have a practice facility in 1982, 1994, and 2011. Are folks implying the reason we don't win is because we don't have a full time practice facility?

This is a poor argument. Its quite similar to some of the arguments against analytics, 'the 70s Canadiens and the 80s Oilers teams didn't use analytics so why bother with those analytics nerds.'

If it wasn't useful then teams wouldn't be investing millions of dollars into it, and now that every team makes use of it, it puts you at a disadvantage if you don't have one. The game and times evolve, and if you aren't willing to change to adapt to those times then you get left behind. It doesn't only apply to the NHL either, it can be applied to any industry/business, 'Adapt or die'.

how do you know this to be true?

Can't say I "know" anything but I do find it suspicious that similar comments were made the last time there was talk of a new contract. I am not saying Petey is lying that he wants to win, but imo it seems to be bit of a negotiation tactic as well.

I also find it weird that Petey's agents made comments just a few months earlier stating that they were looking to get a deal done. Somehow now its decided that he isn't even going to negotiate until next off-season? Something seems off right here, management isn't going to come out and talk about it but I am sure based on the agent's comments they had to have some preliminary discussions.

I am speculating but I think those discussions weren't particularly fruitful. I think whether it was term or dollars, there was probably a wide enough gulf for the discussions to be shelved from Petey's camp. He will have a lot of leverage next year, as if the discussions go nowhere again he can just accept the qualifying offer and head to UFA. I do ultimately believe that both sides will be sufficiently motivated next off-season to make compromises to get a deal done. Of course I acknowledge the possibility that I will be proven wrong but I don't believe for one second he has any intention of leaving. He is currently the face of the franchise and from a financial stand point it makes no sense to throw away all the equity he has earned in this market to go somewhere else. There are no guarantees that he will win a Cup with his next team.

Even Horvat who has been frequently mentioned in this thread wanted to stay but the Canucks weren't ready to meet his lofty contract demands. That will not be the case with Pettersson, management knows there is no way they achieve any of the goals they have set out without him. Ultimately I don't think we will particularly love the terms of that contract as we probably won't be getting much of a discount but I do believe it will get done eventually.

They spent $20M to buyout OEL. This ownership group is many things but cheap isn’t one of them.

This isn't a very good argument. That 20M is going to spread out over 8 years, and it will count against the cap. That money was always going to be spent regardless. Even a notoriously cheapskate owner in Charles Wang gave Rick DiPietro a boatload of cash to go away and that was on a compliance buyout no less.

I suppose you could credit ownership for spending to the cap but that's no longer that special anymore. If you look at the cap numbers, 2/3 of the NHL is pressed up against the ceiling. And the ones that aren't, only a handful of GMs don't have the green light to spend all the way to the cap if it makes sense for the direction of the franchise. Willingness to spend money on players (ie. talent) is no longer an advantage in the current NHL, its should be considered doing the bare minimum.

I wouldn't say use the word cheap to describe our ownership but they are tight on the purse strings, the coaching saga last year was just another example of it. Its clear management did not have confidence in Boudreau but yet they weren't able to make a move and it may have cost us a season.

I don't see Boston in the mix. They barely have the assets and would gut what they have to aquire EP which would be pointless. I see a team like Columbus or similar. I would want a Fantilli type in return +. Maybe Columbus does this to get into a quicker rebuild while adding to their vets. Also have other pieces to add which wouldn't gut them.

He's said he wants to win. Jackets were horrible last year, they will have to show some serious progress for Petey to want to go there. If the team isn't better than the Canucks, he won't want to sign there. Personally if I were trading the farm for a player I would want to know that he is willing to sit down and negotiate. If a GM trades a haul to get a player only for said player to walk in free agency then that GM's career is toast.

  13. 1 hour ago, timberz21 said:

Again, originally I wasn't comparing contract, I was comparing players.  As a player, EP is in a tier with Hughes, Barzal and Aho, whereas Matthews is with McDavid, Draitsail, MacK.

We all know Hughes signed a bargain deal when the cap was flat.  That deal was signed in 2021, with a flat cap, 2 underwhelmed season and a lot of revenue uncertainties for the NHL.  Fast forward two years and take away those uncertainties and a rising salary cap, that contract easily worth 10M$ nowadays.  That's what I meant when I said you could use Hughes as a comparable when factoring these elements.

Personally EP'S range is 10.5-11.5M$.  That's a good deal for both party.  Under 10.5 is awesome for the Canucks and above 11.5M$ is awesome for EP imo.

You also have to factor how many RFA years are in that contract. With Hughes it was only his second deal so there were a bunch of RFA years which are cheaper than UFA. If Petey signs his deal next year, he will be in the same situation as Matthews having one RFA year and the rest being UFA. That's why its easier to use Matthews' contract as a comparable than players coming off their ELC. I do agree with you that Pettersson is not in the tier as the guys that you mentioned, however his production shows but he is not far off especially after the last year. I would slot Pettersson right after those guys, I do believe that he is a better player than Hughes, Barzal and Aho. Eichel probably belong somewhere in the middle of that list as well and Pettersson has been more productive than Eichel.

11.5M right now makes a lot of sense. If you just take Matthews' contract (13.25M) and adjust it for the difference in their career ppg then Petey should be at 11.5M, and that number could be higher next year if he has another great year.

Well, considering you said that Pettersson is going to decline at the age of 30. Which contending team is going to trade for him without any retention? I would also guess, Vancouver wouldn’t want to trade him in his prime, and Pettersson will probably have some sort of NTC in his contract, which limits Vancouver to trade him to certain teams.

Also, what if Pettersson becomes damaged goods within his contract (like you said injuries, etc)? Do you think teams will be lining up for his services?

They did with Eichel. He had to have a neck surgery and Vegas still paid the price to acquire him at full cost. Also when Eichel did sign his contract he still hadn't put up a ppg season and had a career ppg that was 0.79. He got paid 10M and that contract bought multiple RFA years. When Pettersson signed the contract that he is currently on, he had a higher ppg than Eichel ie.0.92.

Now that Pettersson has only one RFA year left, he would laugh at your valuation of 9.5M-10.5M. That is what we could have paid him on an 8 year contract a couple of years ago. But our moron of a GM decided to prioritize other needs than locking up our best player.

I don't blame Pettersson at all for not if he is not considering a discount, compared to his contemporaries he has been underpaid. Eichel has a lesser ppg than Pettersson yet has a much higher career earnings. When Pettersson signed that bridge deal he gave up quite a bit of money, he will want to recoup some of that on the next contract.

Villardi was in the trade to acquire Dubois.

The thing that surprised me most about the Kings was, they ended up giving away Durzi for practically nothing, and seemingly paid someone to take Walker. Those are 2 promising young RHD that could have been a lot more valuable if they shopped them for longer, or perhaps moved them earlier and plugged the holes with vets. But they seem so impatient now. And I’m not a fan of the Dubois add. Good player, but they gave up a lot, and have to pay him a lot too, and he plays a position they’re already quite stacked at. So then they end up having to roll out one of the most questionable goaltending tandems in the league because they have no cap to improve it.

Kings will be good for a while, but I feel they mismanaged the rebuild, and won’t reach contender status because of it.

I mean Walker isn't exactly young, he is 28 years old and was nothing more than a mediocre third pairing defenseman. Durzi does have some promise but he needs to seriously refine his game in the defensive zone, he absolutely got taken to the woodshed in the playoffs this year. There is a reason why they could only get back a 2nd in 2024 for him. Both those guys are nothing special, addition by subtraction imo.

The Kings are banking on Clarke stepping in and making an impact, he is one of the top D prospects but only time will tell if his adjustment to the NHL is going to be smooth. The real loss for the Kings was Brock Faber, now that kid is going to be an absolute stud. Fiala is a nice piece but that trade is one that they will end up regretting for a long time.

Maybe I am misinterpreting but your posts are starting to get weirder and weirder. I hope you are not suggesting that a grown man having relations with a minor is a "bedroom fetish", it's actually completely psychotic behaviour. And no being a "creep" is absolutely a reason to judge a person. Just because someone hasn't broken the law doesn't mean that they haven't engaged in behaviour that is problematic. There are lots of creeps that haven't been convicted in a court of law, it doesn't mean they aren't reprehensible people.

You can defend Cole without defending the behaviour/actions that he has been accused of. The accusations against Cole are unfounded and since there is no person who has come forward and attached their name to the allegation and they emerged as an anonymous online post, they don't hold any credibility.

I don't agree with the oddsmakers, whoever those guys are. Probably live out east.

This isn't some media blowhard airing his s**** opinions. Gambling websites don't care about east or west, they only care about how much revenue they will earn at the end of the day. Now what you can argue is that the odds-makers tend to skew themselves heavily in the direction of past performance and aren't necessarily great at predicting future performance. Even still they are far more objective than you and I because their money is tied to making successful predictions. That should easily make them far more successful at predicting performance compared to the average fan who is emotionally invested in the success of their favourite team. For the record I am predicting that the Canucks do make the playoffs but we are far from a lock and I don't think setting the line at 88.5 points is outlandish.

  18. Honestly I wasn't a fan of this trade when it happened, I thought we needed to do a retool and use the Isles pick. I have come around on that. I believe this trade is only going to look better and better as time passes. Imo ASP's upside is what Hronek is right now, and as the saying goes 'a bird in your hand is worth two in the bush'. The Red Wings have the best group of RHD prospects in the league but I still think this was a mistake on Yzerman's part.

Looking back its hard to believe that Alvin managed to do in a few months what Benning couldn't do in 8 years, acquire a top pairing RHD and draft a RHD top prospect. We quite literally went from worst in the league to above average in terms of RHD depth. Just got to get rid of Myers now and replace him with a decent veteran top 4 defenseman to bridge the gap until Willander is ready.

Canucks and every other Canadian team since Bettman took over…

Tell me how the league would do if Canadian teams started winning like the Blackhawks did. You don’t think that would hurt their bottom line? Of course it would.

The league is successful when certain markets, whos fans would drop their team in a heartbeat, are kept strong.

It’s a simple formula. Canadian teams do well financially regardless of their success. The league does better when southern markets are kept in contention however.

This is exactly what the owners of Canadian teams rely upon, fans blaming Bettman, the league office, the officiating etc. The Blackhawks dumpster dived for multiple seasons and built a powerhouse, there was no league wide conspiracy to give them any top players. They drafted most of the talent on that roster by being horrible for a long time. Meanwhile Canadian teams have to be dragged kicking and screaming into a rebuild. They draft a couple of top players and that's all it takes to convince fans that they are close to winning a Cup and to fill up arenas. Hockey is an afterthought in the US, it takes a lot more effort to bring butts in seats than in Canada. Its why Bettman gets the big bucks so that he takes all the slings and arrows from the fans and absolve the owners for their money grubbing ways.

  21. Wilson is one of those players who is both drastically overrated by some and severely undervalued by others. What has to be recognized is that his impact is so much greater than what appears on the scoreboard. He is a true unicorn and there are very few comparable players that catch match the skillset that he brings to the table. Most of those comparables are just not as good as Wilson is, so they don't see the ice nearly as much as he does. Then there is the reality that the NHL is the only major league with a drastically different rulebook for the playoffs and the regular season and it makes Wilson's impact all the more greater. Comparing Wilson to a skilled finesse player like Huberdeau honestly feels like comparing a forward to a defenseman or a defenseman to a goalie, it just doesn't make much sense to me at all.

The best way to describe the situation I can think of is of going to a entirely different sport and looking at Draymond Green of the Warriors. Green isn't the driving force of his team. When he was the best player on the team, that team was one of if not the worst teams in the league. Charles Barkley even mocked him by calling him "Triple Single". Yet the Warriors have no shot at winning a title without Green, that's the kind of impact I see from Wilson. It simply cannot be measured by any statistical measure.
