Its being implied that he’s soft and his body gives out too easily because he hasnt played a full 82 games. Everyone is complaining that he hasnt played a full season and is injury prone. He was well on his way to a full season in his rookie year and was still making a good case for the calder, up until a bench door was left open and he was hit into it. Yes it does somewhat matter how they happen, its different if he were to get hit with a solid shoulder check such as Auston no shoulders Matthews and miss games. But he had a freak injury that put him under the knife and set him back in his second year of pro hockey. They shut him down last season to get the surgery done in time for him to be fully recovered and training for the upcoming season. Rather than play another 6 weeks and be 6 weeks further behind on recovery and training

    I agree with you 100%

lol, Boesser being injury prone!  What a freaking farce.  He broke his back on a weird accident when he slammed into the open door side of the boards....I'm sure that was conditioning, not just unlucky.  And then, while recovering from said back injury, he ended up with a groin injury incurred because he was trying to get into game shape in a shorter amount of time because of said back injury.  After that, he was a freaking horse for us.  Go jump in a lake with the opinion he's like Mr Glass.  We'd all have probably had the same things in the same circumstances.  smh.

If anything, we're lucky that he had the fluke, and could probably slide in at under 7 million per year.  He's going to put up the points this year, and everyone is going to say what a steal he is.

  2. This could be awesome for the Oilers.  He's instantly better than anyone in their bottom 6, including when he gets injured.  They'd be able to actually have centre depth to a point, as Draisatl can only play wing with McDavid.  This is the kind of signing that actually impacts them in a positive way.  Wish it hadn't of happened, as I was looking forward to just feasting on the Coilers.

  3. Okay, lets go point by point

Statement 1:  I agree with the assessment that the old core deserved a kick at the can, and did make the playoffs.  But they showed that that was all they had in the tank, and that a rebuild was in order.  There have been arguments on the semantics of the wording, but what we got was a rebuild.  Did it go the way other teams have, no.  But I'd say as of the moment, we are more competitive than many other teams rebuilding at the same point in the rebuild.  Hell, Edmonton, and Toronto, both had to rebuild from their rebuilds, and Buffalo is starting to look like it may happen...after a miserable time of it.  I'd take our last season over Edmonton's and Buffalo's all the damn time.

Statement 2:  4 years of downtime and the possibility of playoffs this year or next, with a solid core, consisting of ? marks, but reasonably solid assumptions to those question marks.  We have a potential top pairing d-man, we have a first line centre, a sniper winger, and solid #2 centreman, and for the first time, we have wingers for two top lines!!  Holy $&!#, could you imagine if Kesler had had wingers?

Statement 3:  The process hasn't been ideal.  There have been some signings that were ....questionable.  But sports is a gamble, and rather have a guy willing to gamble and crap out, but solidly moves forward nonetheless, than a coward who only shoots for the sure thing, missing all the potentials along the way.  And yet we still have a solid core to build around, and some top tier pieces still on the way.

Statement 4:  I agree with the assessment that we have elite talent in the key positions needed to win a cup.  It is surrounding that talent with the proper depth and skill to make it all the way.  The team has to prove it, but realistically, we are 2 points/month away from the playoffs.  We were in a lot of the games we lost last year, we added goals, we added defensive ability, and we just need players to now match what they did last year.  If they can match and improve on their seasons from last year, we're rocking.

Benning has done a fair job, and although he makes me want to tear out my hair with some of his gambles, he is a shrewd judge of who he has in the system for the most part.  And when it comes to trading away prospects that are burn outs....he gets fair value.  Shinkaruk for Granlund anyone?  And knowing when to cut ties with a gamble is a good quality in and of itself.  Yes, he sometimes digs his own hole, but you can see where he's going in the big picture.  I think a lot of those gambles will be of the past, as the team is now solidly set up to move forward.  No mass resets, but tinkering around the edges will leave the team with time to properly develop.  Add to that, he solidly makes improvements to things one step at a time, from the drafting, to the product on the ice, now to player development.  This is going to be a big year, and regardless of his extension, if the Comets don't develop, or if the team falls flat, I'm sure Aqualini will cut bait with Jimbo.  But I think a lot of the organisations problems have been dealt with fairly, and this year we'll actually see improvements in all areas.

Contract amount and age don’t have much to do with icing the best team unless your a rebuilding team trying to give rookies a shot to see what you have which JB has made a statement against at this point giving away a first for Miller and adding Myers, Benn and Ferland and letting Pouilet and Hutton go.  Listen I get what your saying but don’t at all agree with the assessment that he’s the 14th forward on the team.   Motte and Leivo won’t produce the same all things equal (whatever line they are on) and Pearson, Bear, Ferland are debatable - same with Sutter and Beagle although I listed all of them ahead of LE with the exception of a Beagle.   I’m not sure what’s going to happen but I will say I’ve never seen a fan base throw a guy so far under the bus before.    Bear might play 60 games might play 20 hard to say.    Schaller will be clear waivers and play in Utica.  So will at least one more guy, if it’s LE so be it - nice message they will be sending.   Let’s agree to disagree, no way is he that bad but hey, guess 5th or whatever it was in forward scoring despite playing most of his time on the 3rd and 4th line makes him 14th best forward due to some math and eye test and gut hunches etc.   Motte, Leivo and Goldobin will never approach the career that LEs had.   Bad signing ? Absolutely. Should we bench him as a result ?  Well I’m not then coach, or GM but maybe, but it won’t have anything to do with who’s the best guy for the job if it is.

Completely agree with you, and hope that the politics don't play too much in this situation!  He was a bad signing, but many of his UFA class were.  He's probably the best of the lot, and if he has a good year, with some help, we can move him.

Eriksson is not our 13th or 14th forward.  Even when he doesn't bring it offensively, his defensive game more than keeps him in this lineup.  He's chafing not getting prime offensive minutes and steady linemates.  He's not trusted like he was back in the day when he was putting up points, and probably assumes that with more trust, better minutes and different team responsibilities, he could put up more points.  But, I look at all of you, who wouldn't be a little bit bitter, in his shoes.  I'm sure there is some blown out of proportion going on, some frustration, and definitely a little entitlement, but that doesn't mean he's going to throw away his career.   Bring him in, tell him what's what, be firm, and let him put it out on the line, or crumple.   But you don't take everything he's done and put him out there with shyte in a show of pettiness.  See how he shows, and go from there.  I can see him playing up and down the lineup, much like last season, but I also remember, when Horvat and Pearson were putting up their points, it was Eriksson getting the assists...  Let's see what a new season brings before errantly sending down a decent hockey player on an overpaid ufa contract to the minors because we want Motte to have more minutes.

I'm not saying he's useless. I just always thought he was younger than he was. I thought we were giving up too early on some young guy with potential only to realize he was older and likely closer to what you see is what you get type potential.

Speaking more as to the reasoning of signing him.  Plus, he can probably clear waivers a lot easier than some.  I personally liked the way Holm played, but I can't argue the reasoning behind trading him to take a flyer on Leipsic, either.  All of these guys, at this point are gambles, and sometimes it is just to see what they'll do in your system.  Kind of like free lottery tickets with limited payouts.

I hope that in the next cba that they up the max amount of contracts a team can carry to 60 or 65.  Would help in development of players, especially farm teams.  Will also be interesting to see if they raise the Draft age to 19.  Next few years could see some interesting developments,....maybe.

Also raising the amount of contracts you can carry will also give a team the ability to carry older players, if they couple it with a change in the way you can insert veterans into the line-up.  It is a shame, the way it is now, that some get pushed out just when they are realising that tweener ability to tread between the farm and the lineup in limited roles.

Something that's always thrown me off was I thought he was like a 21 year old guy when we signed him. He was I believe 25 then and turns 28 this year.

Biega is kind of a late bloomer, but sometimes those are the guys who are good role players, that can take the time sitting on the bench, step it up in practice, and provide mentorship and examples to those coming up.  Everyone has a role, even those who don't have people buying their jerseys or screaming their name.

  7.   I'm not actively on the hate Eriksson bandwagon.  He is kind of a meh factor for me.  Wasn't happy when we signed him, but saw the upside, but instead we got little things.  I'm sure he's just as frustrated as everyone else.

I'll be happy if they deploy him according to situation, anywhere from the 2nd to 4th line, with some healthy scratch time if he doesn't pull his head out of his arse.  I don't care really, as long as he isn't actively submarining the team.  This team is built to win without him, and what he does add, is of value.  come in, do more of the little things, and hopefully put in 20 goals, 15-20 assists.   That is a far sight more than the 11 goals and 18 assists he put up last year.  But if he is more...consistent, isn't outside the realm of possibility.  He can't be moved now, but he can be next summer, so his fate is in his hands.  Build up your value, play, and play hard.  He's still a useful nhl player, he just isn't worth his cap hit.  In the words of another Lou, his contract sucks.  After his signing bonus next summer, he's owed 5 million on 2 years, with a 6 million cap hit.  I can see Ottawa salivating at that point.

We all like a team with grit.  Not only is it a more satisfying game to watch, we all know that grit wins play off games.  Having said that, players with grit who can't play is no good either.  In the extreme, this is exactly why nobody has enforcers any more.  All players have to be able to contribute at a minimum.  Gudbranson for example, grit, size, can fight, leadership and character in spades but....can't skate, often out of position.....not helping.  Kassian, is a better player but has an inconsistent effort and is a disruptive influence on the other members of the team.

I am liking players like Miller who brings the grit and the size to add a physical element to the top line while not making a sacrifice of skill.  Ferland is another.  Benn is a good 3rd pair D who brings all these elements but doesn't hurt you skill wise and can play up the line up for short periods.  Roussel and Pearson are others.

Like the grit, just want players with speed, skill, and character too.  Loved the never say die attitude of the Canucks last year.  They played hard to the final whistle.  That's hard to play against too and the come backs were there last year.  Love that too.

This, this is what I've been talking about too.  Having a pylon that is tough with intangibles doesn't help, if he isn't helping you win too.  And we need more than one guy like that, and we need more skill, more speed, more ....everything.

Best part about this off season, is that we actually went out and got people who are hard to play against, who are skilled, who have that size, and added to the tenacity that we had going last season, where the team played to the last whistle.  The more you look at it, the more you hear from the coach, from the players, everyone is excited, they want to be at camp, they want the season to start now.  That's going to be infectious if they have early success, and hopefully they'll learn from the adversity faced last year to push them even harder this year.  These guys are hungry, and they want to win.  They don't want a better chance at the draft lotto, they want the playoffs.

  10. Calgary, Vegas, Vancouver/Arizona for top 3 in division, with Edmonton and SJ coming in behind that.  SJ is kind of a wild card.  Do they sign marleau and thornton?  Do they ride as is?  Will they have good goaltending, will they have shaky goaltending?  Edmonton, same with goaltending question marks, and you might as well throw Arizona in there as well.  And Calgary.  Vegas is solid if Fleury is healthy...

But I have to say, if we're going strong, don't mess with it too much and maybe deal some of our extra forwards that aren't being used for....anything.  Don't buy unless you are able to parlay sutter, eriksson, and goldobin for a unicorn, aka maybe one of Philly's defensemen.

I think this season is going to be fun, and we ride or die with who we have, but next season will see some definite tinkering to forwards who were untradeable this season.  I'm looking at your Eriksson, providing you're still on the roster.

Looking forward to Game 1 of this preseason more than any since the last time we made the playoffs.

I have that 'feeling' about this team like we are about to enter another window of amazing hockey.

    Circa 2009ish vibes for sure.

You and me both man.  Now, I do wish we had the defense from 2011 at times, as compared to what we have now, but excited to see Hughes challenge Hughes for the calder!  And if what on paper comes together...oh man.  And what if Ferland can actually mentor Virtanen??  Could you imagine having two of that type of player on your team on different lines?  Add to that Hughes ability to walk the line and create offense out of nothing?  Miller is an entry machine, as well as his ability to pass to players in high danger positions, looking at you Boesser and Pettersson.  And Horvat has the option of actual top 6 wingers!!!  And then we still have enough to field another line for the top 6.  Haven't seen that in....did we ever find wingers for Kesler??

  12.   From everything I've heard, Boesser wants to be here, wants to win here, and wants to win being a Canuck.  Those are everything we want in a player on our team.  His dad isn't in a great way health wise, from what I've heard.  I think the team and he are close on the number and term, and could see them getting it altogether no later than oct 2 at the latest.  This is a guy who isn't holding out.  This isn't a Nylander situation.  Everyone needs to take a breathe, enjoy their August and anticpate Oct 1st.

The start of a new era began last season, and the future is bright.  We have our captain, Horvat!  We have our sniper/playmaker in Pettersson and our sniper in Boesser.  And, for the first time in oh so long, we actually have depth in top 6 wingers, in Baertschi, Pearson, Miller, Boesser, Goldobin, Eriksson?.  We have a strong top 6, and a deep bottom 6, which is strong enough to step up if there are injuries.  Pettersson, Horvat, Sutter, and Beagle down the centre is actually pretty good, and Gaudette is waiting in the wings.  Miller can also play centre.

Defense wise, we have switched out half the personnel, and have Biega and Fantenberg as the depth, with Juolevi, Chatfield, Brisebois and Sautner in the AHL forming a strong top 4 for the farm club, but also able to step into the Canucks lineup.

And Goalie wise, Dipietro is going to be there, as is Keilly.  A full year of development in the AHL will be good for them, and for us in the long run.

This is it, everyone, the culmination of restocking the cupboards, some exciting question marks on the main team, and on the farm team, and knowing that we won't hit the wall draft wise that happened under Gillis.  Which means, every draft should produce at least 2 players, with the chance at one out of every three years producing an impact player.  Be excited, and enjoy the ride.

Sounds like you're still living in 2015 or can't let it go. The plan is always to make the playoffs for any team.

Top round picks are generally the best players, so they would crack the rosters sooner. No surprise here. There is a reason why players get picked in the later rounds because they generally need more time to develop and it's harder to predict those players. If you're expecting an influx of 7 players into the NHL team after every draft, then of course you'll be disappointed. Benning joined the team with basically no prospect pool, so there was always going to be a lag time before seeing the prospects come in. Demko is making his way in, Tryamkin may return, we have Jasek, Lind, Gadjovich and Brisebois in Utica, possibly DiPietro too. Gaudette is right on the cusp. We could see Rathbone and Lockwood sign contracts by the end of this year with Woo possibly joining as well. We could see Hoglander and Madden next year. This is just focusing on the players drafted in the rounds after the 1st. Add in the 1st round group, plus young signings and this team is starting to round itself out.

This is probably the most important point most have yet to realise.  We are on the tip of the iceberg, and haven't been just building off of first round picks (looking at you, Edmonton!).  It takes time to get traction, it takes some pain on the ice to get the talent needed, but if you're waiting for the magical first overall pick, you'll be waiting forever it seems.  As is, you take what you get, and build your entire team to even out the weaknesses, and promote the strengths of the personnel.....YOU HAVE.   You do that right, you're setting yourself up for success, every time.  Might be some bumps, but you learn from those, change direction accordingly, and move forward.

I'm not the biggest Benning fan, hell, sometimes he makes me want to pull out my hair.  But, I am excited for this season's iteration of the Canucks, and although I might not have signed some of the players he did, now that it seems he's fully in charge, we should at least see what happens on the ice this season.

We're actually zero traded players away from getting both signed. There's no cap space issue to signing both.

I sure hope so.  I know it isn't all doom and gloom, and I also know that Boesser has some stuff going on with his father that might be pushing the contract down the road a bit, as well as the possibility he gets signed oct 2 when Roussel is put in ltir.  We shall see.  Even with that, it is exciting right now to wait for the season to begin, and I for one, can't wait.

If we under perform this upcoming season, would have to think the blame goes on the GM who put a basement team in cap trouble. JB will be fired before Green I would have to guess. How many times can a GM hire and fire a coach before he gets kicked to the curb...

Clean house.  But...on paper, this is a strong team.  It has some...cap difficulties, but I think the Boesser contract issue is over-blown, as we are just one traded player away from getting both him and Goldobin under contract for the fall.

I think we're going to see some great hockey this fall, and I bet we'll have to dust off those band wagon seats soon enough.

  17. OO, back to the main post, Dahlen always was a gamble.  There is a reason he was included in a trade for an aging winger, much the same as Goldobin.  There were serious questions about ceiling, as well as floor.  Player attitude has to be taken into account, as well as their ability to translate their game to the NHL, with clubs that can even out their shortcomings and emphasise their strengths.  Dahlen needed time to acclimate, and I think he did himself a disservice in his time in the AHL.  He has some great qualities, that if harnessed, could have made him something in the show....but, you can't always gauge for what is going on between the ears.  I think it is telling that SJ hasn't had the success with him that everyone here thought.  This could well end up to be like Shinkaruk, everyone bemoaning us giving up a future nhl star....and once the smoke clears.....Benning was right.

  18. Also, defense pairings are important, and on the back end, it is a partnership, a synergy, that is important.  Sometimes, the 2 players together work to make one of them better than he'd be on his own.  We can see that Karlsson is a better defenseman than Methot, but ....Karlsson also benefited having Methot as a partner, and was better with than without.  As a team building exercise, sometimes you have to take a players weaknesses into account, and pair people together to make the sum better than the individual parts.  We never had a defenseman to make Gudbranson better than he showed.  Pittsburgh had players in their system that could make up for his shortcomings, which allowed him to play in his comfort zone, and for his time, he did play well in Pittsburgh.   We shall see what season 2 brings.

In his time here, he didn't have the team to make up for his lack of speed.  So he got turn styled, much to the chagrin of many.  Now, you change our team, and have some defensively responsible speedy wingers that can tear down the wing on the backcheck when your defenseman gets caught....he gets to peel back and get the trailing guy instead.
