  1. Ehlers wouldn't of been this good with us.

Jets needed the type of player he is and already have more than enough size and skill to open things up for him and put him in the right environment.

We are not as nearly as big as the Jets and not as deep. Not a good environment for Ehlers IMO.

That's why we are drafting that size now.

Hes playing on a line with Scheifele and Perrault....neither of whom are particularly physical. That line is so good because of the enormous amount of skill on that line. He's just skilled enough to open space for himself with his speed.

Management just screwed up big time by drafting Jake over Ehlers. The kid is the real deal.

  2. Love the Canucks, but living in Winnipeg and being a Jets fan and season ticket holder as well made the Canucks passing on Ehlers alright in my eyes. Was thrilled that he dropped to the Jets. 6 points in 8 games so far.

it'll be nice to see an elite talent like Ehlers in the peg for many years to come. Hasn't happened since Selanne.

  3. yup.  We need more super softies to go with Baertchi.  Hahaha.  You should thank God we have Virtanen and not more marshmallow types.  How can you have the Big E as your avatar, and want softies over Virtanen?  You should change your avatar to Alexandre Daigle.

Lol some bust Ehlers is hey?

  4. Hey at least Nylander isn't ripping up the AHL as a 19 year old...oh wait...he is.

But it's still very early obviously but yes the frustration continues to build every time I watch Virtanen go out there and do nothing.

I honestly haven't seen much of anything offensively out of him. Just looks like he's in way over his head in this league. Needs to go back to junior.

  5. Vey is a solid Playmaking centre with a track record of setting up solid shooters in Toffoli and Pearson. It's a strech that they will play on the same line for multiple seasons, but could for the next 2 or 3.

Kenins/Higgins Vey Virtanen could be a fun line to watch.

Possibly. Hopefully Vey can take a big step forward. Seems like a good guy in the room.

  6. Maybe McCann could be that guy. We're not tanking.

I know :(. We're still too good of a team.

I don't see McCann being that kind of player. Mostly a finisher, and not terribly creative (he does show flashes of dynamic creativity though, but not consistently). He probably has the best release and accuracy on his shot out of everyone in our prospect pool though.

  7. I think you're trying to say he needs an elite playmaking centre that excels on the rush, and I can agree wit that.

I like Ehlers, more than I do Nylander, but I'm still glad we got Virtanen.

Unless Virt improves his cycle game, I don't really think he would have chemistry with Hank. The Sedins would be at their own blue line with the puck while Jake is already a zone ahead of them. The speed difference is immense. I know they have chemistry with the Honey Badger but he can cycle the puck very well, in addition to being lightning quick.

Like you said, he would need a centre who excels on the rush, someone like Monahan, Carter, Giroux, or Johnson.

    Tank 4 Matthewz maybe??????

  8. Then there's this guy...

Like you've been told , give it a rest.

You're coming off like a slow adult.

Umm......I literally stated 3 facts in my post:

    1. The Hitmen don't have great coaches

    2. Besides the coaching, the Hitmen made it to the conference final, making them one of the top 4 teams in the league that year. If that constitutes being a "bad team", then what does that make the teams below them?

    3. The Hitmen made it to the conference final, as I had stated in point 2.

But no just call me names. Makes you look like a child and harms your credibility in an argument. You're just helping me out.

  9. Anyone else dizzy trying to make heads or tails of this guy's posts?

Jake needs to play with an elite center. Need to get our hands on an elite center. You want more elite than Henrik? You have back tracked more in this thread than the Duggars.

Henrik might be around for another 5 years, and I doubt Willy will play him with Hank anyways, unless he really improves his cycle game. Plus, if he does get some playing time beside Hank, he will when he's very young. I doubt we'll see him scoring at a first line rate by the time he's 22-23 years old. That would be EXTREMELY impressive.

I haven't back tracked. I've stayed by my original argument that Jake Virtanen cannot make himself an elite goal scorer in this league. The only way he could do that is if he is playing next to an elite playmaking centre. If Jake pots 20 goals per season on average, I'd honestly be happy with that kind of production out of him. He brings many other things to the table other than scoring, the biggest being his physical play.

I'm just bummed that we picked him at 6th overall......could have had Ehlers.

  10. Cassels... McCann... Horvat ... Zukenov .... all have potential to become a 1C.

......seriously? Jeez some people need to temper their expectations when it comes to our prospects. I'd say out of all of those guys, Horvat is the only one with a chance at a first line role.

  11. Nothing that says that he has a ELITE offensive awareness. Again my definition of elite is top 10 in the league and usually you find an unbias article that compares him to other elite players you aren't going to change my opinion.

There are lots of players that make there linemates better, doesn't mean they have elite offensive hockey IQ

Also Corsi is shots for and against, Kessel is a shooter so of course there corsi is going to be better

I wasn't trying to prove that he has elite offensive awareness. I was proving that he makes his linemates better.

  12. True, but at the same time guys like Stamkos and Ovechkin create their own space through their skating. With speed like that you can make your own space.

I would also say they relied on guys with high hockey IQ in St.Louis and Backstrom to make sure they got the puck in open ice. Virtanen may need a guy like that centering him in order to really shine.

For sure, DeNiro. If we could somehow get our hands on an elite playmaking centre, Virt would shine.

  13. One page back, you shrug off someone's post about Jake being a product of poor coaching and a bad team to express your concern about his hockey IQ, yet now you turn around and use it to support your argument for Kessel's hockey IQ.

    Just give it a rest.

Jake has had poor coaching, but he hasn't played for a bad team. The Hitmen made it to the conference finals this year.

  14. Points has nothing to do with having Elite hockey IQ. Hockey IQ is your ability to create scoring chances from nothing and make you linemates better, Kessel doesn't have either of these qualities at an ELITE level.

Also using points as way of evaluating a players hockey IQ isn't a strong arguement at all. Infact some of the names under Kessel (Kane, Dats ETC) definitely have a higher Hockey IQ than Kessel. Your proof also doesn't account for injuries or for a players PPG over that period of time.

Kessel's PPG isn't as high as other players below him. However, you have to remember that Kessel has played for the frickin Leafs for the past 5 or 6 (?) years.

I think people will finally realize that Phil Kessel is one of the best players in the league this season. Wouldn't be surprised if he won the RR trophy.

EDIT: Also, Phil Kessel DOES make his line mates better. I can pull up some stats to actually, you know, back up my claims.

  15. There is a laundry list of players with mediocre hockey IQ that have played well with the Sedins. It's like playing with Steve Nash in his prime--you do not necessarily see the pass coming, but know to stay on your toes. I'm just saying that spending some time with them on the ice would help him learn the cycle, which IS one of the weakest parts of his game.

You're conflating the risk of not becoming a 1st line player with the risk of not having an NHL career at all.

I guess I probably should rephrase the point I'm trying to make.

If you put Jake on a line with a centre like McCann or Horvat, who will both be pretty good, two way centre men, he won't be an elite scorer. In order for Jake to be an elite scorer in this league, he would need to play with an elite playmaking centreman. Jake doesn't have the offensive ability to be "the guy" on a first line in the NHL. However, he would be a very good complement to an elite playmaking centre.
