Lots of people think Tocchets toughness will translate to the players he coaches.

I know he does not have the best head coaching record but have his past teams been know as really tough? hard working, hard to phsycally play against?

He pissed me off at the end of last season.

Kuz is a player full of confidence, energy, and real skill. However, It felt like those big smiles and fan favourite energy rubbed Tocchet the wrong way. Kuz is not a tough Tocchet type player so he got the pine. Meanwhile Dakota Joshua got played too much.

Rick has the attitude that if you're not hardnosed, how dare you have bravado... such as Andrei.

Kuz missed out on scoring 40 in his first year. Because of this coach farting around.

Be better this year Rick. You have been nepo-given a great squad.

One of my favourite sayings is '...the strength of the wolf, is the pack'

I hope for the day that all our guys get into it if needed, to back up teammates

I think what Tocchet was trying to instill is this wolf pack mentality you are asking for, especially because that is what he brought to other teams he coached. Kuz is great, but he has even more potential if he starts being more defensively aware and brings some more grit to his game. He already has shown he has no problem going to the front of the net to score those hard nosed goals. If sitting Kuz brings out more in his game, Tocchet should be credited. Regardless, I highly doubt Tocchet would sit him just because he smiled and fans like him.

Why bother posting about what he is like now, when you don't even watch him?

If you had kept tabs on him you would know that he is still a very quick and mobile skater. He remains a top pairing Dman in the KHL. He is usually playing on the left side these days. He appears to have got stronger since growing up from a 21 year old boy to a 28 year old man. He has played in 5 seasons of KHL playoffs since leaving VAN. He is in his prime age as a Dman right now. In my opinion based on actually watching him play over the last couple of years he is at least capable of playing on an NHL bottom pairing.

I think most fans have sour grapes over him going back to Russia and that is the main reason for the comments like "he's no good", "he'll never make it in the NHL", "hard pass", etc

You're right. He's likely just a capable bottom line NHL pair Dman, so why would we be fawning over him? The guy showed up out of shape and then went back to Russia to be comfortable instead of trying to succeed in the best league in the world. Now he's MAYBE coming back if it suites him? I say good riddance. He'll be one of the older guys in the locker room and we shouldn't want him being looked up to by our younger Russian players.

  3. Hanifin is the real deal, and I have a feeling more of the Flames players are going to jump ship before the new season. Hanifin and Hronek would be a legit top line pairing. Have Hughes and and an offseason signing as 1b and Quinn can soak up all the PP minutes. Our D would be completely rebuilt. I wonder if our 2023 1st, Connor Garland and Jack Rathbone would do it considering Calgary's position here.

    Yeah folks.

I don't need this random defense.

Regardless, I'm excited to see who the Canucks sign.

I respectfully ask to maintain my unique view that Podkolzin is underwhelming in exchange for my other unique view that Myers is actually good and more or less worth his contract. Thank you. I did not mean to cause a ruckus.

I can appreciate this perspective as Podkolzin is not exactly lighting it up, but he isn't exactly a bust. I would have rather taken Boldy, but other than Caulfield there isn't a player taken after Podz that is that much further ahead.

The kid needed to adjust to NA ice, and has steadily improved during the season. I think he has the motor and desire to keep improving so I wouldn't count him out as being a solid pick for us. One thing I feel like he's already done is open the gates for more Russian players to want to play here.

Just wanna bring this to the forefront think it got passed over being st the end of a page. His turnover ratio is alarming.

Eric Karlsson last year was 52 takeaways 63 giveaways

guys like fox and makar have more takeaways than giveaways

josi numbers worse than I expected 48 takeaways 71 giveaways.

    Girard 21 - 28

letangs are more comparable but still not as crazy as klingbergs

Just think it’s worth noting that Klingberg comes with a lot of pluses but he gives the puck up a lot too

Lets look at another good defenceman from the Stars...

Miro Heiskanen had 45 take aways and 84 giveaways.

It seems that Dallas' style of dump and chase leaving the zone has a lot to do with that stat metric. Klingberg should get a pass on this stat if that's his only big fault.

Fair point, I guess what I'm trying to say is OEL is historically an offensive defenseman, and is paid as such.

If we are going to sit here and say "well he played well defensively last year" that's fine, but he's still massively overpaid and if we are going to hold him in that role and there are much cheaper options that will put up similar point totals for much less money..i guess was my point. Zadorov not a great example maybe but there are plenty out there. With OEL being paid this much, he needs to contribute offensively and put up 40-50 point while not being a liability which he showed last year he can play well in a more defensive role. I have a feeling BB and JR was to put OEL in more offensive situations this year. But let's not get it twisted his contract is GIANT anchor...he's an asset back there just not at his inflated price.

If we want OEL to play a strictly offensive role we need to pair him with someone that can pick up the slack defensively. When Hughes was injured, OEL stepped up and looked great on the PP and his scoring rate went way up. Pairing him with Tyler Myers means OEL isn't able to take risks like he would in an offense first game.

I'm not disagreeing that OEL needs to bring more value for his contract size, but I do believe he still has it in him to put up 50pts with the right D pairing. Our RHD pool is actually pathetic, and for both Hughes and OEL's sake Rutherford needs to address this as his top concern this offseason.

    BB is our guy.

His system clearly suits our personnel.

Trotz is borderline Jacques Lemaire 2.0 - nothing wrong with that if you have the right personnel and the commitment from the entire team - but I don't see his system working with who we presently have under contract.  That's never been the style of play that ownership (or fans) out here prefer.

I think Trotz has proven that he can adjust his style of play to accommodate a faster run and gun team like the Islanders, while keeping his defensive structure intact.

just for clarification, isn't it now up to Bruce to come back? I thought he was offered the option year from our end and he has until June 1 to decide?

There is a mutual component where Bruce can opt out of coming back, but he has publicly stated he would like to stay here next year. It's only speculation, but I believe if Rutherford was on the Bruce train 100% we would have him signed up by now. It seems like JR was waiting for something to make his decision. Maybe he had some insider info on what just transpired in Long Island.

  9. With today's firing of Barry Trotz, the offseason coaching market is heating up. Last week we heard Rutherford praise Boudreau for the job he's done since he took over in December, but he did express some reservations.

JR has not yet committed to bringing Bruce back for next year and has stated there are options. One of the things Jim critiqued Boudreau on was his lack of defensive structure, saying the Canucks were league worst for D zone departures. Bruces winning record speaks for itself, but it's clear Rutherford wants some new systems to be implemented for next season. Do we give Bruce a full training camp to work in some of the changes JR says is lacking?

Barry Trotz won the Jack Adams only 3 years ago and comes with a playoff winning pedigree. He also brings the defensive structure that Rutherford says is missing and is 8 years younger than Bruce. I think at the very least the Canucks are kicking the tires on Trotz since the news dropped this morning. Do we offer Trotz a big 3-4 year deal to entice him up to Vancouver?
