Actor Randy Quaid - Request for Permanent Resident Status in Canada Refused: Update Post #52

The CBSA has withdrawn its objections that Randy Quaid is inadmissible under the IRPA. Now that his wife Evi has been confirmed as a Canadian citizen, she can now sponsor her husband under the Family Class from within Canada.

Months after publicly claiming he was being stalked by shadowy Hollywood celebrity killers — or "star whackers" — actor Randy Quaid on Wednesday received a Vancouver Film Critics Circle acting award for playing, of all things, a hitman.

The actor and his lawyers also took the occasion to tell reporters that his odds of staying in the country are looking brighter. Last week, the Canada Border Services Agency withdrew its bid to have Quaid deemed inadmissible.

And Quaid's wife, Evi, now has full Canadian citizenship and has begun the process of sponsoring her husband, meaning Quaid's claim for refugee status could be dropped.

"When Evi and I came to Canada last October we can never have envisioned how things would unfold and how our lives would change," he said.

"Today we're here to say, 'Thank you, Canada. Thank you for your warm welcome. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to live in peace.' "

The setting for Wednesday's celebrity schmaltz was not a glitzy Hollywood auditorium, but the modest courtyard outside Quaid's lawyers' offices in downtown Vancouver.

Still, Quaid, sporting a grey suit and red tie, seemed to bask in the spotlight as he accepted a belated award for his performance in the 2008 Canadian flick Real Time.

In the film, Quaid plays a hitman hired to kill a compulsive gambler played by Canadian actor Jay Baruchel. Only 59 per cent of the audience "liked it," according to the website www.rottentomatoes.com.

Local media personality Terry David Mulligan presented the award on behalf of the Vancouver Film Critics Circle.

"Randy's a really good actor, making really good films and we're really pleased to have him here," Mulligan said.

Mulligan invited Quaid to attend next year's award presentation and be the presenter for film of the year, "if you're around and available."

As if he was giving an Oscar speech, Quaid expressed his gratitude to the film's producer, his co-stars and the crew "for all their hard work."

Curiously, he did not mention his wife, who — as in many other appearances before the press — stood beaming near him, her newly issued citizenship card clipped to her jacket.

The Quaids made headlines back in October when they were arrested in Vancouver on outstanding warrants in the U.S.

The couple had failed to appear in a California courtroom to answer to felony vandalism and misdemeanour trespass charges. They were accused of causing more than $5,000 damage at a home they once owned.

They have now missed several court dates.

The couple has repeatedly asserted in interviews that they are being targeted by a cabal of Hollywood lawyers and business managers who are conspiring to have them killed and steal their money.

The Oscar-nominated Quaid is best known for his role as Cousin Eddie in the National Lampoon Vacation movies. He has also appeared in Brokeback Mountain, Kingpin and Independence Day.

The Santa Barbara DA filed an extradition request for randy and Evi Quaid with the US State Department of Justice in late June:

The district attorney's office in Santa Barbara, Calif., confirmed Wednesday that it has submitted a request to the U.S. Department of Justice to consider extradition proceedings against former Hollywood actor Randy Quaid and his wife Evi.

The Quaids are wanted in California on charges of felony vandalism and misdemeanor trespass. They are accused of causing more than US$5,000 damage at a home they once owned.

After taking a month or so to laugh uproariously as such an idiotic request for extradition on such a minor matter and trying to determine if the Santa barbara DA actually had a license to practise law, the DOJ rejected the request.

He's avoided the crosshairs of celebrity killers — and now it appears Randy Quaid has escaped the clutches of the U.S. government.

Joyce Dudley, the district attorney in Santa Barbara County, Calif., announced Friday that her office's bid to extradite the former Hollywood actor and his wife, Evi, has been denied by the U.S. Department of Justice.

"In declining to seek extradition, the USDOJ noted the resource intensive and lengthy process involved in seeking extradition from Canada," Dudley said in a news release. "They further stated that extradition is generally reserved for more serious offences than that with which the Quaids have been charged."

In September 2010, the Quaids were arrested in California and charged with felony vandalism and misdemeanor trespass, accused of causing more than $5,000 damage at a home they once owned.

They were released after posting bail. But when they failed to show up in court, their bail bonds were forfeited and warrants were issued for their arrest.

The couple was arrested the following month in Vancouver. In a bizarre twist, both submitted claims for refugee status, claiming that they were being hunted down by celebrity killers or "star whackers."

Earlier this year, Evi Quaid obtained full Canadian citizenship through her father and announced that she had begun the process of sponsoring her husband.

The Oscar-nominated Quaid is best known for his role as Cousin Eddie in the National Lampoon's Vacation movies, but he has also appeared in Brokeback Mountain, Kingpin and Independence Day.

In recent months, Randy Quaid has made public appearances performing in a band. In April, the couple also debuted their "highly experimental" docu-drama called Star Whackers.

According to the Santa Barbara district attorney, bench warrants for the Quaids remain out and "should the Quaids return to the United States, they will be arrested."

Randy Quaid's request for permanent resident status has reportedly been refused by Canada Immigration.

Canadian immigration officials have denied U.S. actor Randy Quaid's request for permanent resident status in Canada.

A Canadian government official confirmed late Saturday that Quaid`s request for permanent status has been denied.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly.

Quaid can appeal the decision to the federal court.

U.S. officials last year refused to seek extradition of the actor and his wife from Canada to face felony vandalism charges in Santa Barbara, California, but authorities in the coastal town say they'll still have the couple arrested if they return to the states.

Quaid has sought to stay in Canada, claiming he was being hunted by "Hollywood star-whackers" who had killed his friends David Carradine and Heath Ledger.

Quaid's trouble began in 2010 when he and his wife were arrested for causing more than $5,000 damage at a hillside home they were renting.

Randy Quaid is the older brother of actor Dennis Quaid and is best-known for his roles in films such as "National Lampoon's Vacation" and "Independence Day."

He won a Golden Globe award for his depiction of President Lyndon Johnson in a TV movie in the late 1980s.
