Hockey Fans Put Romance On Ice For Playoffs: Survey

He shoots! But, he doesn't score.

Canadians - both men and women - go on fewer dates during hockey playoffs, according to a survey released Wednesday by online dating site Match.com.

The survey found women are almost as likely as men to choose a night cheering for the big, brawny men on the ice over a cozy candlelight dinner for two - at least between April and June.

Ten per cent of single women say they date less during hockey season, compared to 14 per cent of Canadian men.

But, depending on the province, some unattached Canadians chose to combine their love of the national game with the possibility of a new relationship.

According to the survey, Quebec's eligible bachelors and bachelorettes place the highest value on a shared love of hockey. Twenty-three per cent of singles from the province would not date someone who does not like or follow hockey, compared to 17 per cent of Canadian singles nationwide.

And, the playoff dating desert isn't reserved for towns with teams.

Despite not having hometown teams to cheer for, singles from Newfoundland and Labrador and New Brunswick are the most likely to put off dating during the playoffs.

A full quarter of Newfoundland and Labrador singles admit to dating less during playoffs, while the same is true for 19 per cent of singles from New Brunswick.

Match.com's resident dating guru, Kimberly Moffit, suggests a tight playoff run is the perfect time for a first date: ``Nothing gets chemistry going like a bit of conflict,'' she says. ``Cheering for different teams? Be respectful, but don't be afraid of a little friendly competition.''
