Something similar happened to my aunt recently, she ended up losing a few grand. She was an academic for 40 years too, not someone who was unaware of things. Some little puke called her up pretending to be a grandson needing bail money freaked her out so badly that she ended up transferring money, and felt so dumb after, but she shouldn't these scammers know exactly how to manipulate old folks.
