Kassian Taunts Gagner Injury

It appears Zack Kassian has caused a bit of a stir with a gesture he made towards the Edmonton Oilers players near the end of the game on Friday night. David Perron and Luke Gazdic got into it with Kassian as a scrum ensued at the benches with just under a minute to play in the third period. As Kassian was skating towards his bench for a line change, Perron made an extra attempt to rough him up. The players on the ice came in for some generic pushing and shoving before being led away by t

Better Without Edler

Are the Vancouver Canucks better without Alex Edler in the lineup this year? The Canucks don't appear to be struggling in his absence. Think about this. There are 767 players that have played in the NHL this year according to NHL.com. Out of those 767, Alex Edler ranks 753 in plus/minus at -12. Mike Stanton is a +4 and Kevin Bieksa is a team high +10, so you can't blame it on the lack of goals. Now granted, many don't believe in the plus/minus statistic. There is more to the story however.

Thornton Ground-and-Pound's Orpik

http://youtu.be/qePKiGYqbkY Shawn Thornton. Remember him? He won a Stanley Cup right here on Vancouver ice. He also ambushed The Province's Tony Gallagher on a Boston sports show. Gallagher did not do a good job defending himself either. The same Shawn Thornton is now flirting with a Bertuzzi like suspension after his UFC style take down, followed by a ground and pound that knocked the Penguins Brooks Orpik out cold. Orpik required a stretcher to remove his limp body from the ice. Orpik

heritage classic

WTF :We are going to host a Heritage Classic game this year. I know that in Vancouver we feel forgotten about in the big BHL (Bettman Hockey league) most of the time, and to a degree rightly so, but to have a "Heritage Classic" game here is a little ridicules don't you think! They are supposed to be games to bring back memories of years past playing outside on frozen ponds, lakes or flooded back yards, which rarely occurs in Vancouver, not in just another extra large venue to sell more tickets.

Put Kassian on the Power Play

Zack Kassian is on the bench for the power play. Still. Does anyone remember Dustin Byfuglien? There was a purpose for the big guy. Go to the net and cause trouble. Kassian should be in front of the net. Hiding shots from the point by Garrison or Edler, making sure the goalie can't see them. The goaltender might save the initial shot but there is more chance for a loose puck. Kassian should also be able to have at least one, if not two defencemen on him in front of the net. Essentially

Scoring 101 – for Vancouver Canucks only

Question 1: What's the only way to avoid a pothole when riding a motorcycle following behind a car? Answer: Look where you want to go. If you look at the pothole, you will hit it 100% of the time.   Question 2: What's the only way to avoid hitting the ditch when losing control in a skid around a slippery curve? Answer: Look where you want to go. If you look at the ditch, you will hit it 100% of the time.   Question 3: As a skydiver, what's the only way to close on an 8-way? Answer: Look w

Eddie Lack: Our scouting isn't terrible

The Stork For all the (justified?) boourns the Canucks' scouting staff have to deal with, every now and then they pick up a gem and it goes largely unnoticed. That is until it's too obvious to ignore. Chris Tanev says hello, by the way. There's no need to go through the Canucks' woeful drafting record in the past decade. Everything that needs to be said has been spoken. We're still wondering where Nathan Smith is and most of us still have R.J Umberger getting laid out by Brian Campb

Booth, brains and business

It must be a difficult time to be a David Booth fan these days. There’s not much love in this city for the eccentric 28-year old, who came over from the Florida Panthers in 2011. Since then, Booth has scored 18 goals and 35 points in 79 games. If those 79 games were over the course of a single season and not bits and pieces over two years, they wouldn’t be so bad. But considering Booth has spent more time in the infirmary than on the ice, there hasn’t been much traction to the Support Booth m

Sochi Winter Olympics 2014(Hockey)-Projected rosters, thoughts, and predictions.

With only a few months to go before the 2014 Winter Olympics, I'd like to share some of my thoughts about everyone's favourite event...hockey! (Note, Olympic rosters consist of 25 men, however I only included this number for Canada, as the rest are pretty obsolete). THE ELITE: These teams have the best chance at medaling, any one of them could win gold. TEAM CANADA SOCHI 2014 (Projected) Stamkos-Crosby-St. Louis Duchene-Tavares-Nash Perry-Getzlaf-E. Fight or Farce?

Fight or Farce? Ray Emery continues his attack on a defenseless Braden Holtby. It should come as no surprise that Brian Burke would come to the defense of fighting in hockey, as he did in a column for USA Today last week. After all, this is a man who kept his rosters well stocked with 'truculence, pugnacity and belligerence' during his tenure as a GM in various cities. This is a man who called a press conference to lament having to send enforcer Colton Orr to the minors in January 20

If you show up drunk, don't bother showing up at all.

Before I start, I just want to express how excited I am that the Sedins will be Canucks for the next 4 years As a (poor) student living in Saskatchewan, I've never had the opportunity to see an NHL game. In the few opportunities where I've been in Vancouver or Calgary, I've either been too busy to go or there haven't been any home games while I was there. So when my brother pitched the idea of going on a road trip with he and my Dad to Edmonton to watch the Oilers play the Leafs (they're bot

In Response to John Garrett's Article, "Conspiracy Theory"

*edit* This post repeats some of the comments I made on John Garrett's actual article; in case you were wondering if I had stolen points from someone else. I just read John Garrett's article, called "Conspiracy Theory"; you can find it here. Although I respect Mr. Garrett's opinion, and he raises some good points, I'm not sure how I feel about someone with such close ties to the Canucks organization making a formal criticism like this. Calling out referees, let alone the league as a whole

2013-14 Season Preview - Central Division

2013-14 Season Preview - Central Division David Backes is the total package, and so are the St. Louis Blues. This may be the year they join the NHLs upper echelon. We've looked at the Eastern Conference and now our season preview moves West and we look at the Central Division, where the Hawks have dominated in recent years. Will it continue this season? St. Louis Blues The Blues have a roster that's as deep as anyone else in the league and they are definitely trending in the rig

2013-14 Season Preview - Metropolitan Division

2013-14 Season Preview - Metropolitan Division Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang. I'm not exactly going out on a limb with this prediction, am I? I don't know about you, but I still can't believe how ridiculous this division name is... seriously NHL... really? Anyways... last week we previewed the Atlantic Division, where I picked the Detroit Red Wings to continue their dominance over the Eastern Conference and win the division. This week we will take a look at how I s

2013-14 Season Preview - Atlantic Division

2013-14 Season Preview - Atlantic Division The Wings have dominated the East in recent years, which bodes well for them as they move to the Atlantic Division. The 2013-14 season is just around the corner, training camps are underway and roster speculation is the order of the day. But just how will this season really play out? Over the next few weeks we will look at each division and break things down. So who's ready to take that next step? And who will come crashing back down to Ea

The Watch List - Western Conference

The Watch List The Canucks are a much stronger team when Ryan Kesler is healthy. Has he finally shaken the injury bug? Last week we had a look at the Eastern Conference's watch list, and now it's the West's turn. Which players have the potential to really turn heads this year? Keep your eyes on these 14 players. Anaheim - Jakob Silfverberg - The 22 year old was one of the pieces the Ducks picked up in return for Bobby Ryan, so it's safe to say there's going to be some extra eyes

The Watch List - Eastern Conference

The Watch List Sergei Bobrovsky was sensational for the Jackets last year and nearly led them to the playoffs. Can he do it again? School kids may disagree with me but this summer feels like it's way too long. Mercifully, NHL training camps will open soon and we can finally get back to some hockey. The prospect of a new NHL season, one that will start on time no less, is always exciting. With re-alignment shuffling some teams around, new divisions and the Red Wings and Blue Jackets mov

Just What The Doctor Ordered?

Just What the Doctor Ordered? - Canucks coach John Tortorella meets the media and he's been all smiles so far. But can he get them to the next level? It was pretty much inevitable that change was coming, that a new voice was needed. Two straight first round exits in fairly unceremonious fashion will do that to a club who's expectation each year is to contend for the Stanley Cup. And so on May 22nd, the Canucks dismissed Alain Vigneault as head coach, along with much of his coaching

Remembering the Rocket

Ask most Canuck fans and they'll probably tell you they remember the night of November 5, 1991 vividly. The night a small kid from Russia would make his much anticipated NHL debut. Unfortunately, I am not among those who recall the night Pavel first took to the ice in Canucks colors. While I don't ever remember a time in my life where I didn't love hockey, I was 8 at the time and for me, it was more about the players I liked rather than allegiance to a favorite team. Pavel Bure changed that. He

Vancouver Canucks: "The Plan"

On June,30th, the day of the 51st annual NHL entry draft Mike Gillis did the unthinkable by trading away goalie Cory Schneider to the New Jersey Devils for the 9th overall pick. The Canucks who went on to draft forward Bo Hovart from the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League. Many thought the extending goalie saga in Vancouver was finally done. But now with Roberto Luongo not speaking out to the media since this deal there is some potential that Luongo could not report for the 2013-2014

What the ____ !?

What is happening!? AV for Tortorella, and now Schneider for a draft pick. A draft pick! I know that Horvat can and most likely will bring good to the team. But seriously, it was Schneider and we should have gotten more than a 9th overall pick. Because we need someone now, not in three-five years, now! I don't have anything against Tortorella, but I don't think he would fit in very well with the Canucks. He is an older fashioned coach that the elite players of our team wouldn't agree with.
