  1. Here is the deal , I give you another scenario. Sign Tanev , Toffoli and Markstrom at their current contracts. No to Schmidt no to Virtanen and no to Holtby . difference in contracts would have been. about 2 million. to Make up that room send Ericksson and Roussel to Utica.

Trade Demko ,  Bartschi and Rafferty to Detroit for Moritz Seider and Bernier (Detroit retains 2 mil.)

    Sign Hamonic at 1.25 mil

    Sign Tryamkin 1.5 x 2

    Sign Rutta for 1.5 x 2

    Miller    Pettersson   Boeser

    Pearson  Horvat   Toffoli

    Hoglander  Gaudette   Bailey / MacEwen

    Motte   Beagle  Sutter

    MacEwen

    Edler       Myers

    Hughes     Tanev

    Tryamkin    Hamonic

       Ben , Rutta

    Markstrom

    Bernier

Up and comers Seider, Rathbone, Lind, Podkolzin, Juolevi , DiPietro

Cap freed up for next year. 17 million

Exposé Myers  or Rutta in the expansion draft.

Next year same crew but upgrade the third line center and replace Bernier with DiPietro

There you have it a better team . Keeping them together, would build on a winning culture.

  2. What Benning could have done if he had the balls, we would have been better now and in two years. He could have showed that the bubble was no accident . FA had his fingers all over this.

All he had to do is sign Markstrom ,Tanev , Toffoli, no Schmidt .. Traded Demko, Virtanen ,and Bartischi  to Detroit for Veleno plus a second.

    Miller    Pettersson  Boeser

    Pearson   Horvat   Toffoli

    Hoglander Sutter MacEwen

    Motte  Beagle  Bailey

    Edler         Myers

    Hughes     Tanev

    Benn          Harmonic

    Extra's   Juolevi , Rafterty  Hawryluk

Rest on the Farm  that includes Eriksson and Roussel

Add Podkolzin after his season is over.

    Cap works

Next year move out old contracts that are expiring . Sign Pettersson and Hughes to bridge deals. Retire Ferland Buy out Eriksson and move Roussel with a pick.

You than have two years to get the boys to win with this core

  3. Follow this

Trade 1 , To Florida Sutter and Benn the Canucks get Brent Connolly and a second and a third.  Why Florida does this they get a good shut down center for their playoff run and a solid   D-man  Van gets two picks plus Connolly who is out of favor with Florida.

Trade 2, To Montreal Pearson and Roussel  the Canucks get Drouin and a second and a third round pick. Montreal gets Pearson to play with Toffoli and some grit on the bottom lines and they get rid of the Floater Drouin . Van gets Drouin who might get motivated and a second and a third draft pick Van Retains a mil or so to even out the cap on trade but on Pearson's cap only.

    Trade  3, Virtanen for Heinen

Trade 4 , Trade to the Lightning  a second round pick and a third round pick for Cal Foote

So we move the chairs around and clear some cap space . Gain picks , a second and a third.  Add Podkolzin

    Miller     Pettersson   Boeser

Drouin   Horvat      Connolly / Hoglander/ Podkolzin

Heinen  Gaudette  Hoglander / Connolly / Podkolzin

    Motte      Beagle     MacEwen / Podkolzin

    Edler         Schmidt

    Hughes      Myers

    Juolevi    Hamonic

    Foote,  Brisebois, Bailey

Ferland retires or not? Ericksson to Utica then buy out save two mil.  Sign Edler for two mil next year.

16 mil in cap for signing Hughes and Pettersson and Demko

edler sutter benn pearson baertchi spooner and bonus overages come off the books   eriksson can be sent to ahli suspect  he might retire  plus   roussel will be bought  out  one of myers  beagle holtby will be grabbed by seattle. i hope we trade all expiring contracts for draft picks. We can pick up a few cheap waiver wire or ufa players this offseason and resign our main core kids and we gold plus get a decent top 3 pick

Eriksson is not giving up 6 million $ would you buying him out is their only option to get rid of him , Roussel the owner will not buy out so your stuck with him. Unless Seattle takes him . Yah Jim has us set up nicely LOL

Virtanen is among the best goal scorers in this class and combines a powerful and accurate shot with elite speed. He’s a dynamic offensive player who creates scoring chances for himself and linemates with good vision, a high hockey IQ and great patience with the puck.

What separates Virtanen from other wingers in this class is his defensive skills. He back checks consistently, plays physical in all three zones, battles hard for puck possession in his own end and is willing to block shots. Don’t be surprised if he receives ice time on the power play and penalty kill during his rookie season. Coaches will be able to trust him in any situation.

It must have been Jake's mom that wrote this ? High hockey IQ? LOL BUST, BUST

  6. Benning has drafted 7 players with 90 + games in the NHL overall 13 players total that have played more than 1 game in 7 drafts.

the regime before in 7 draft years Drafted 6 players with 90 plus games and 14 players total with more than 1 game in the NHL now Benning's numbers could go up as his picks mature. B on drafting, D on signings, Cap management -FFFFFFFFFF. The goal is to win the cup . Trade any vets that you can, and send Loui to Utica

Well not really you need to build a team around the young star players which managing the cap and personnel properly. Otherwise the Franchise, despite it's young stars, will forever end up like Edmonton or Buffalo

Plus until Benning ends up with a Jake Guentzel or a Brayden Point ... I'm still not 100% convinced Benning is a great drafter

Edited 6 hours ago by iinatcc

Bingo,  Who he drafted compared to how he could have drafted, plus one draft year without one D man being drafted. A monkey could draft as well, best player available script, its the third round and later picks that really can help build teams.

  8.         In Jim Benning's tenure we have made the playoffs 2 times. With Willie and Green. Now everyone that has voted for Benning is drinking his Cool aide . Not me Drafting what a laugh His first two picks in the top 10 are, or look to be busts. All the other times he drafted the best player available according to his scouts. So how does that make him a draft genius. LOL.

Now he made a couple of good trades Miller and the Toffoli trades . Then he wasted the assets for Toffoli by not resigning him a callosal blunder. Now you all say well he had no cap space . Bo Ho . He created the mess we are in . Bad signings and poor trades are the foundation of his house of cards he has built.

The cap was holding him back he cry's, I ran out of time . Excuse after excuse .  The cap was there to keep Markstrom Tanev and Toffoli but we would have lost Demko for nothing the masses cries maybe and maybe not. We would have went into this season with the same core as the playoffs group . His MVP still with the team .  And had the team focused ready to take on anyone. No Holtby, Schmidt , Hamonic, and Virtanen = $14 million .While  Markstrom , Tanev,  Toffoli  = $14.75 million. so close to the same. A better Team as a result.

We would have been in cap trouble next year he cries, again cool aid. Pettersson and Hughes would have signed bridge deals to keep everyone together. 6.5 mil each. 13 million needed . the list of players leaving,  Edler, Bartschi, Pearson, Spooner, Benn , = $17 million. Demko is resigned or traded or even lost to Seattle. Eriksson traded or bought out. Roussel traded add another 5 to 8 million.

Now we stuck with what we got , Fire Benning should be the cry of every fan .

Agreed on Marky, he was our MVP.  Demko played those three lights out games to close out our season and really skewed everyone's perspective.

Tanev would've been a good keep, but I really don't think he'll be staying healthy although I'm rooting for him.

Toffoli has 8 goals against the Canucks and 1 against the rest of the division.  He was a luxury that we couldn't afford IMO

Nobody will take other people's spare parts that cost money, zero chance of moving any of the three unless someone wants to give you their salary dump in return (kind of like Gagner for Spooner trade).

I think that Marky could be looked at as the biggest mistake by Benning.  This whole argument that the team is bad because they lost a couple of teammates just doesn't hold water for me.  They're not preschoolers whose best friend moved away.

We shouldn't overlook the fact that we went from playing the crappy California teams to being in the toughest division in hockey.  To top it all off, we have struggled mightly against the Canadian teams over the last couple of years and they all made significant upgrades.  Benning could've loaded up more but it would've cost us flexibility down the road.

The difference was 1.8 mil and a better team, better Goalie better D man and a better winger , I would take that any day as far as down the road cap would worry about that down the road . JB screwed this team.

  10. You can paint this picture anyway you want. I see the picture a different way. Keeping Markstrom ,Tanev and Toffoli as the right move. But the cap you all cry and wring your hands .

Markstrom is a top 5 goalie in the league  in his prime, 6 million cap, will be good for 3 to 4 years cheap cap compared to other élite goals. Would be right in our wheel house when the kids are ready . Better then Demko  . Canucks MVP. Leadership in the room all things that warranted keeping him. Demko could have been traded.

Tanev still a good Dman, glue for Hughes. Leadership calming influence in the room. was actually more healthy last year then years before comes with age and knowing how to play. 4 years of him helping Hughes become a better Dman. I would have taken that.

Toffoli great two way forward well liked in the room and is good for 20 to 30 goals a year. Stanley Cup experience. Cost us a good prospect and a draft pick.

Benning pissed off his team and maybe the coach by going after OEL and shunning his out going vets stupid move.

Now dont say that there was no cap room for Markstrom Tanev and Toffoli there was . the difference of 1.8 million Not signing Virtanen was a step in the right direction and or a trade to move him out. Benning cant think ahead on anything he does . Shinny new toy lets get!

Schmidt was supposed to be a big upgrade on Tanev really not looking like it.

So under my thinking we would have moved ahead under the same roster except Virtanen .

    This years team.

    Miller Pettersson Boeser

    Pearson Horvat Toffoli

    Hoglander Sutter MacEwen

    Motte Beagle Hawryluk

    Edler  Myers

    Hughes Tanev

    Juolevi Hamonic

    Markstrom

    Demko

    Extras       Gaudette, Brisebois, Chatfield

Utica,  Roussel, Eriksson , Bartschi and all the rest. Try to trade any of the three from the farm. Virtanen trade for a third or a prospect

Trade Demko at the trade deadline or make a deal with Seattle and keep him.

In the off season add Podkolzin  and Tryamkin

We would have fit in the cap and could have had a better team.

Next year Edler, Bartschi, Sutter Pearson   Demko all off the books .

    Ferland could retire as well.

    Eriksson bought out

Enough cap to sign Hughes and Pettersson.

JB did a terrible job of cap management and asset management he should be fired ASAP

I definitely could do a better job

Petey isn't friends with Brock, Bo, Huggy?

    Come on

Goaltending is not the problem either.

Pettersson was friends with Markstrom and Hughes the same with Tanev. Toffoli  was well liked as well . JB screwed up this team and I dont think the players liked the way the out going Vets were treated. Like I said before all three could have been kept Maybe the contracts would have looked bad in three years but maybe we would have won a cup to. When you have a tight group you go with it. Holtby, Schmidt , needed not be signed Virtanen traded or not signed . the money was there. I would have traded Demko for a young D Man his value was high after the playoffs . But water under the bridge . Right now they need to play better one more loss like that and I would clean house on management and the coach.

If Tanev is hearing for weeks about the team chasing OEL, but hasn't heard a single word from the team...

This totally stinks of ownership driving the bus. OEL was the shinny new toy we didn't get . I can see not wanting to sign Markstrom  but Tanev and Toffoli needed to be signed. Jake could have been traded right now he is worth a bag of pucks. JB should tattoo bend me over on his forehead now, what a joke.

  13. 1 - Markstrom. Simply couldn't have stayed. JB had to decide between Marky and Demko because of the ED and Marky wanted to be protected. Marky is a top-5 goalie right now, yes, but for how long, a couple more seasons? JB went with Demko (and rightly so, fits our young core better) so had to make the hard decision to let Markstrom walk. 6x6 contract will be brutal at the end of the contract which is likely when our players will be in their prime and JB knows he doesn't want another Eriksson contract. What's the other option, give Marky 6x6 and let Seattle take Demko? Much worse.

No sign Markstrom and Trade Demko at the trade deadline  get a stud young Dman.

Tanev. This hurts, sure, but 4.5x5 for a 30 year old often-injured defenceman is a big gamble. He's a top 5 shutdown defenceman in the league, no doubt about it, but again this contract will surely not age well. JB made a gamble and must have known about Schmidt, because Schmidt is younger, better offensively and more rounded than Tanev. Before the start of the season I'd have said Schmidt was the better defenceman (but has not played as he has in Washington and Vegas and Tanev has been brilliant). Again, the key here is longevity and common sense tells us that Schmidt will outlast Tanev (although you never know). Chris has looked good but he's one or two injuries away from really starting to slow down, JB is looking long-term here whereas none of the fans can seem to. That's why he's the GM, making the unpopular decisions for the team's future.

Sorry Tanev was Hughes right hand man and would have been worth the tenure, Schmidt is been a tire fire.

Have to defend JB on all fronts here and if he had the off-season again, would do it all again. If anyone objects, tell me what he could have done differently? Yes, it's the GM's job to deal with contracts better and move money out, but how is he supposed to predict a pandemic that drops the cap and makes every team tighter? He did the best job he could have in his position and have full faith in his decisions. The team on paper is brilliant, the on-ice product is a mess right now but I think that's more down to preparation, fatigue, mistakes, coaching and the players, not the GM.

Are you watching this . JB wrecked the chemistry on this team . Hughes is a train wreck , Toffoli if he wasn't playing for the Habs we could have won all those games. LOL

JB is the worst GM at managing a team Drafting yes building a winner no . He had a good start at the end of last year and screwed it up do not signing three players now we are headed for a lottery pick.
