Living in Vancouver

You can obviously have fun in this city, but it's not as easy as other cities. There are also almost no public festivals, events, gathering places, etc... for a city this size. I'm also not the only one complaining about it. So, it's actually you who's being an arrogant ass here, which is exactly part of the problem. If it was just me with the problem, then yes you'd have a point. But Vancouver has the nickname "no fun city".

Not only are the people unfriendly, but the whole infrastructure is geared towards Nimbys. Liquor and restaurant licenses are restrictive. You need a licence to have a dance floor. Our new entertainment/casino district was cancelled for....more condos.

We have articles in newspapers about it:

But apparently, there is no problem. Everyone who complains about it is "George Bush" and you're a social dynamo. I have a great social scene. I go out every weekend and was able to meet friends, but largely through school. I meet people downtown, but largely have very superficial meetings. I also get tired of having so few choices. Seriously, a license to have a dance floor? You've got to be kidding me. The simple fact of the matter is that you have to work harder in Vancouver to have a good time. There is an infrastructure set up in total oppossition to it.

I can't seriously believe people in this thread are arguing that the social scene is good here or that it's an easy city to make it economically in. Just google Vancouver "cost of living" or "no fun city", and you'll see what people actually think.

I agree with you on that. Vancouver isn't really a fun city, it is a city where you have to work hard everyday to pay the high taxes and rents. It has a lot of amenities which is its strong suit but it doesn't have a lot of events or festivals where people could gather around and have fun. The other problem might be that it is too multicultural where it seems that the population is fragmented. People of different cultures and customs have different ways of interacting with others and this is probably what has created the reputation of Vancouver being less of a friendly city. I find that travelling to less multicultural cities like Manila where the population is more homogeneous, that the people are more closer and friendlier versus multicultural cities like New York, Toronto or Vancouver.

There are multicultural cities that are friendly, L.A. and Montreal come to mind, Vancouver just has the wrong cultures and subcultures.

Going a bit deeper than the unfriendliness factor though, is that Vancouver has by far the highest percentage of underhanded and creepy people I've seen anywhere, whereever you go you'll always find some toxic losers but they seem to be attracted to and thrive in this environment.

Well being a doctor at least there's hope for being able to buy a place.

What I would say is most important is to figure out where you're working first and then figure out where to live.

Getting a nice place in Burnaby won't be so nice if your commuting to White Rock.

There's nice areas in pretty much every city in the Lower Mainland (even Surrey!) so it's not really going to be hard to find a nice community.

Just make sure you don't have to cross any bridges to get there.
